View Full Version : Hair Problem
White_Daisy 02-02-2003, 09:10 PM Okay, I have dinner with my grandma this week. And I need to know how to straighten my hair. I have very curly, very thick hair. How do I straighten it with the freakin' blow dryer and not kill the muscles in my arms? How do I straighten my hair, period?
laceyinthesky 02-02-2003, 09:13 PM Try using a flat iron. They work alot better than trying to straighten your hair with a hair dryer or curling iron.
Hope this helps. :)
Georgia's on my Mind 02-02-2003, 09:14 PM ok...not exactly a solution to your problem, but ever think about a wig?

Is it okay if I wet my hair before using it or will I get electrocuted?
Stupid question, yes, but I'm not taking any chances.
AllIWantIsYourClutch 02-02-2003, 09:19 PM Okay this is where i come in. I have like the thickest hair in the world.
Flat irons dont work on my hair cuz I have a lot of it....
I use Pantene Pro V Keep It Straight gel....you get your hair kinda wet and then put the stuf on and blow dry it with a flat brush...it works for meee.

Hmmm...I have some straight gel that I've never used, I'll try it tonight!
Penny Lane 02-02-2003, 09:22 PM Sorry Hon! I have very straight ,straight hair! You can have mine! I wish I had more body /curl to it! But I understand your problem! Back in the 60's my girlfriends ironed their hair but I don't know how it's done. I never had to straighten my hair! Hope someone can tell you a safe way to do it!

It works best when you're hair is really dry and you've put gel in it and let it dry.
White_Daisy 02-02-2003, 10:02 PM I've come to the conclusion that it cannot be done with only me so I am asking my friend for help tomorrow.
I want it to be straight! I don't want body, I don't want curls, I especially don't want people asking me why I want to straighten me hair, I just want it straight!
 That was the most superficial thing I have ever said. Please forgive me!!
JoJoJoJoJoJoJoJoJo 02-02-2003, 10:04 PM have you ever thought about getting a straitghner put in your hair? go to the place where you get your hair done at and talk to them about, i got one put in, cause i got reall thick wavy hair, and i liked it a lot..

Amen to that.
*ShortCake* 02-02-2003, 11:05 PM LOL WD-- I agree... if one more person tells me that everyone pays thousands to have curls I am going to slap them. Why would someone pay to have frusteration in their lives? GR!!.
¤I Love Clay Aiken¤ 02-02-2003, 11:54 PM Get a flat-iron brush and blow it straight dry. Then use the flat iron. Thats what I read in magazines.. I dont actually do those LOl. My hair is naturally stick straight.

I know what you mean. I have really long and straight hair. I want more body to my hair too. The only way I can add a bit of curl to it is to braid it in a really tight braid when it's wet. I can't do two braids. Well, I could do 2 braids but I always wake up with a bad headache after braiding it in 2 braids. It never fails. When I do it in 2 braids, I try to braid it loosely and I still wake up with a damn headache.

I braided my hair one night to get the soft curls look. Looked more like wet spaghetti. My hair is pretty long- down to my bra- so I cant reach back anymore.. I have to bend down, and I can NEVER reach the underneath layers to curl it. I do one said and just say screw it-- itll be straight in an hour anyways. And it is. I dont have any volume either. I always thought my hair was thick, but my hairdresser finally told me that its not THICK, I just have a lot of it- which is a difference. So instead of my hair being thick, its just a lot of it, but its really fine.

I can't braid my own hair in one braid. I have to get my mom to braid it for me because I can't reach the back of my hair either.
I hate curling my hair with a curling iron. I tried that a few years ago and I swear it just makes my hair have that burnt smell. If I wanted it curly for a special occasion I would tear pieces cloth up and roll my hair in that and it would stay pretty curly for a few hours.
I used to have really thick hair when I was younger. Foolishly, I cut my hair short when I was in 2nd grade and it just isn't as thick as it was before I cut it.
CollegeGirl 02-03-2003, 01:34 AM Layering your hair adds volume, or so I've been told.
I've got really long hair, too. Today, at our first play rehearsal, I was asked to "not cut my hair until the play is over." I've always heard of this happening to actresses, but it's never happened to me before. Now, I'm all wondering what it would be like to cut my hair. Before, I never gave it any thought. Isn't it odd how you don't consider doing something until someone asks you NOT to and suddenly you think, "Hey, there's an idea!"
I used to straighten my hair ALL the time. I've never used an actual iron, but hear it works (just be careful not to destroy your hair in the process). If your hair is anything like mine, as you straighten it, it gets frizzy (not good!). So, you'll want to make sure you add a no-frizz serum to it (best to do this while it's still wet, after you've combed out your hair). I add all my styling products after I comb my hair out, but before it's dry. When you add it before it's dry, it seems to weigh your hair down less (at least with me, it does). And remember to straighten as you dry your hair (I used to use those driers with a brush attached, but I haven't seen any of them in a long time, and assume they don't make them any more). So, use a large brush and straighten as you dry. Remember to also flip your hair over to expose underneath your hair, and straighten from that angle to. Then, take a jumbo curling iron and straighten out remaining waves. There's a wax type product that hairstylists use to keep hair from being fly-away, and you should look into that.
Warm & Fuzzy 02-03-2003, 08:16 AM I heard that flat irons were bad for your hair.
I suggest straigtening gel. ;)

UpstairsSteak 02-03-2003, 12:32 PM Rusk has a product called "Str8" that works pretty well. You definitely will have to use a flat iron after you blow-dry it straight - an ionic dryer and brush help. I've been looking into Japanese straightening/thermal reconditioning which is all the celebrity rage right now. Chemical straightening is kind of risky so if you're thinking about it, get it done at a salon. The results are stunning.
