Temperatures Drop but TV Land's Mercury Rises As Network Records Most-Watched Month Ever Sanford and Son, MacGyver Score Double-Digit Gains for Classic TV Network
New York, NY, Jan. 28, 2003 – Winter’s deep freeze can’t stop classic TV from sizzling as TV Land recorded its highest audience levels ever among total viewers and in its target Adults 25-54 demo on a total day basis in January. Fueled by the launch of Sanford and Son, the addition of MacGyver and the continued strength of the network’s schedule of classic TV programming, the network finished the month with a +33% ratings increase in its target Adults 25-54 audience and a +34% gain among total viewers in total day over January 2002.
‘TV Land is off to a roaring start for 2003,’ said Larry W. Jones, Executive Vice President and General Manager, TV Land and Nick at Nite. ‘Our viewers continue to tune into our already stellar classic TV line-up, and with new programming like MacGyver and Sanford and Son, they know they are guaranteed the best of everything television.’
For January 2003, according to Nielsen Media Research (12/30/02-1/26/03), TV Land was up +33% in rating and +40% in delivery in total day, averaging a 0.4/321,000 among Adults 25-54. The network also drew 569,000 persons 2+ in total day, representing a +34% increase over last year. In prime time, TV Land averaged a 0.5/470,000 Adults 25-54, a +25% increase in delivery over last year; and 936,000 viewers among persons 2+, representing a +13% gain over last year.
Highlights of TV Land’s January performance include:
- Sanford and Son (Mon-Sun, 9 p.m. ET/PT) posted a 0.6/503,000 in the Adults 25-54 demo, a +50% ratings increase and up +51% in delivery over last year. Among persons 2+, the network averaged 1 million viewers, +22% more than last year.
- TV’s clever daredevil MacGyver (Sun-Thu, 12 a.m.) continues to draw viewers, posting a 0.4/386,000, which is up +33% in ratings and +90% in delivery among Adults 25-54. MacGyver averaged 535,000 persons 2+, a rise of +68% over last year in total viewers.
- The network’s New Year's Eve (12/31/02) marathon, ‘Last Episodes,’ featuring the series finales of The Mary Tyler Moore Show, The Andy Griffith Show and The Brady Bunch, drew +45% more viewers (548,000 p2+) than New Year’s Eve last year. The marathon posted a .35/316,000 in the demo, a +35% increase versus last year.
- TV Land’s New Year's Day marathon, ‘First Things First’ (1/1/03), featuring the series premieres of I Love Lucy, Three's Company and Gunsmoke, drew +49% more viewers than New Year’s Day last year, averaging 667,000 persons 2+. Among Adults 25-54, TV Land posted a .45/409,000, a +61% increase from last year.
