View Full Version : MP3 sharing software....
Bootsy Whoosh 01-12-2003, 12:34 AM Does anyone have any they recommend? I have heard bad things about KaZaa and BearShare, so I want to stay away from those. I used to have audiogalaxy and I didn't like it very much. I went to Download.com to search, but I don't recognize the names of anything there. Does anyone have one they like? I'm only interested in MP3s, so I don't care whether it supports other types of file sharing or not....
Thanks.
Brian 01-12-2003, 12:37 AM Kazaa, at least to me, is arguably the best in downloading MP3s.
Mr. Stefani 01-12-2003, 12:38 AM I use Kazaa Lite..It doesn't have that spyware crap like the normal one and doesnt have popup adds either. You can d/l it here (http://doa2.host.sk/)
Truth 01-12-2003, 01:33 AM Bootsy, yea stay away from Kazaa, Kazaa is full of viruses and spyware and even includes software that uses your computer power and hard drive space for the makers of Kazaa's Company, I recommend Winmx, no spyware, no ads,
Truth 01-12-2003, 01:34 AM Also stay away from Imesh, When you install that, It installs at least 10 other spyware programs....

Use winmx. That's what I use. I agree about Kazaa. I used to have that, but it slooowed my computer down, so I got rid of it. Winmx is way better. It's free too! http://www.winmx.com

Yeah, thats why i use kazaa lite..WinMX doesn't work for me. The downloads take forever.
Czas na Zywiec 01-12-2003, 01:55 AM I've been using KaZaA for about a year now, and it's great. I'm not that paranoid, so I don't really care about all that spyware crap. Plus, out of all the downloading programs, I find KaZaA to be the best in selection. They always have what I want, unlike the Napster I used 2 years ago. Now on that, I never found a damn thing. But I guess whatever works best for you.

Did you start using Napster after the Filters were put in?

I stopped using it in the begining of 2000, but it was still really bad way before that.
fr00ti 01-12-2003, 02:07 AM KaZaA is the best out there.
Beruche 01-12-2003, 02:11 AM Kazaa lite is good.
Bootsy Whoosh 01-12-2003, 02:40 AM Thanks for the advise everyone, keep it coming! ;)
I'm definitely going to stay away from KaZaa now. I knew it had alot of viruses and spy ware and things, but that crap about them using my hard drive space, PC power and bandwidth is bull. People should read the article AAOT posted about it and take the author's advice: dump KaZaA and send the company packing.
Oh, and personally, this isn't a matter of being "too paranoid" in my eyes....this is a matter of knowing and protecting my rights to my property.

Well said! To some the issue of spyware can be considered paranoid, afraid of being watched, Its more then that though,
I have a firewall so I could use kazaa or other spyware programs and still block the reports it sends out about me, Yet I still stay away from the spyware, I wouldn't trust a company that is going to download things onto my computer(Ads in most spyware companies) when they have already snuck their software onto my system, If they honestly said up front, "we are going to watch what you do" I wouldn't mind, But to do it without telling you, its like someone stickin a camera in ur house without you knowing... The good news is, some anti virus companies are starting to also detect spyware, Flashtrack, a type of spyware that comes with IMesh Is labeled a Trojan by Mcafee Anti Virus....
Georgia's on my Mind 01-12-2003, 02:58 AM i like kazaa and winmx, um with the spywear they can view everything on the comp or just there program?
Bootsy Whoosh 01-12-2003, 03:01 AM There also software out there that is made specifically to detect spyware. It's called Ad Aware and it's free. Those interested can read more about it and download it here: http://www.lavasoft.de/index.html
To me the issue of spyware and such has nothing to do with people spying on me. It's not like I'm scared someone's going to find out I spend my Internet time at sitcomsonline or Yahoo fantasy football or whatever....the problem is that those kinds of programs take up space on your computer and slow it down. The effect could be quite significant, especially on older machines.
If Kazaa or the other spyware companies want to buy me a new computer every few years or so after it gets all mucked up from their software, then great. But in the meantime, last I checked it was my computer that I bought with my money, and I'd like to keep it that way.

They watch what u do on the web and what you type in forms, Id hate to think if they watch what you type when you type in things like credit card numbers when ordering stuff,

Many different types of spyware watch what you type in forms, many times they will claim they won't record things like credit card info, but you never know, These companies will do anything to get there software/spyware onto your system,
IF you take a trip to Kazaa's Site, and click on privacy policy, They tell you that there software does not include spyware, (HA! That's a lie)
And under the list of programs that comes with Kazaa. Kazaa says on all of them that they can be easily removed......
Hmm lets say we want to completely remove the spyware programs that comes with Kazaa....
(And this is just my guess)
We would have to uninstall Kazaa, remove the spyware programs from the control panel, Uncheck the spyware programs in the startup box if its set to run at startup, Download ad-aware, download Refupdate(A program that updates Ad-aware), Run Refupdate to update Ad-aware, Do a full scan with Ad-aware, post the log file on the Ad-aware support forum to make sure its safe to go ahead and delete all it finds, and then delete all of it,
That'd take probably at least an hour (Counting the time ud have to wait for a reply from ad-aware peeps at the forum,) Plus Kazaa comes with the spyware "New.Net" A type of spyware that if removed can sometimes mess up your internet connection and leave you without being able to connect, So to remove that "New.net" ud have to download a special file that you run if your internet connection does end up being messed up to fix it....
And Kazaa's website says this stuff can be easily removed,
The Point of this longgggggggggggggggggg post, is that they will lie, and lets hope these companies aren't lying about the whole it won't record sensitive information thing in forms.... Be careful everyone! The internet is a crazy world...

wow thats insane. I d/l that ad software link you posted and deleted all those, that gator thing was on my comp...Oh well That's a start...better than nothing
Truth 01-12-2003, 11:13 AM Since you quoted my post before I edited it, Lemma explain what I edited, I edited it the original post by taking out gator and saying spyware companies in general instead as far as form watching since now im not 100% sure Gator watchs the forms, I thought it was Gator that records forms and made the statement that it doesn't record things like credit card info but now i dunno, It may just track website viewing, ugh its 7am and I haven't got to sleep, I probbaly will go to sleep in a few after i read up on gator a little more
Truth 01-12-2003, 11:21 AM before Im off to bed heres what Download.com Says about Imesh...
"This download includes additional applications that are bundled within the software's installer file, some of which may be provided by parties other than the developer of this download. These applications may deliver advertisements, collect information, overlay content or graphics on the Web site you are viewing, or modify your system settings. As with all downloads, CNET recommends that you pay close attention to the options presented to you during the installation process. Known third-party applications bundled with this download include GAIN, Cydoor, Hotbar, eZula TopText, New.Net, CommonName, SideStep, NetPal, FavoriteMan, VX2, FlashTrack, and BonziBuddy. To use iMesh, you must also install these bundled applications"
GAIN is Gator by the way, So when you install imesh it also installs lets see, 12 other spyware programs, Id hate to think how much computer memory that takes up there... Heck It includes Flash Track Which is in Mcafee's Listings of Known viruses... Why download.com even has Imesh on there is beyond me... Here is the link to mcafees site about FlashTrack, I believe its the correct Link.. http://vil.mcafee.com/dispVirus.asp?virus_k=99206&

Krisalicious 01-12-2003, 01:05 PM I love KaZaA Lite. It's like....the same thing as KaZaA but with no spyware or anything like that.
Kay Scarpetta 01-12-2003, 01:22 PM I might try KaZaA Lite. Justin's convinced me..... but hey, if I uninstall KaZaA, won't all my MP3's be deleted? Or do I just move them to another folder?

Well, before I had KaZaA Lite I had KaZaA. Then I heard all that bad stuff about it and I deleted KaZaA after having it for only two days lol. But before I deleted KaZaA I made a copy of My Shared Folder and I moved it all to KaZaA Lite.
