I had surgery on my chest. I have pectis....something. so my chest goes in instead of out and they had to like take out ribs and twist some around, which is gross. but Its not that bad I just can't run for a long time and do competitive sports. and I've had surgery on my pinky, I broke it pretty bad. and I had a big cast too, it sucked cuz it was over the summer and I couldn't go swimming for two weeks.

I had some surgery a year and a hald ago to repair a broken collarbone. I had some pins and wire in there to hold everything together, which required more surgery to remove them later.

The surgery went well, the recovery was painful.

Thank God for painkillers!

Last year I had jaw surgery. I didn't do anything to my jaw, it was just that it didn't align with my top jaw. I inherited it from my mother who had the same surgery done at the age of 40. If I hadn't had the surgery done, then eventually the bones in my jaw would have worn away. Literally I would have been slack jawed. Truthfully, it wasn't that painful. I think having my wisdom teeth taken out was more painful. The only thing was that I had to eat using a syringe for about 6 weeks and I could only eat foods that were mushed up.

My friend is gonna have to have jaw surgery this year too. I've never had a surgery, but when I was a baby, I drank weed-eater fuel and had to go to the hospital, I'm not sure what they done but I thought that was pretty ironic that I drank that. I think that's the only time I've ever been in the hospital. I had a concusion when I was a baby too, but I dont think it was anything serious. (I know people that may disagree, telling by the way I am now, however.)

I had surgery twice on my eyes when I was a baby to uncross them. I had jaw surgery too, in 1988. I had a protruding jaw, they took a piece of bone out of the bottom on both sides and pushed my jaw back. Thank god for painkillers is right. My jaw was wired from April to June. I was 18 when I had that done.

I sure was scared, but it had to be done and I would be better once all the wires came off and the pain went away.

I'm sorry that your friend needs surgery and I hope it all goes well.

I almost had to have surgery. I broke my ankle in two places sprained it and tore a ligament pretty badly. Thankfully I didnt have to have it though phew. I would have been a nervous wreck. I dont do well with that hospital stuff!

I actually just remembered I had surgery on my pinky finger. I broke it playing basketball with my neighbors and it was broken in such a way that if i didnt have surgery it wouldnt heal right. I was in surgery and they were gonna cut my finger open and put the bone in place, but they first tried to rebreak it and fix it and it actually worked, so they never had to go into the finger and the best part was that i was alrighty knocked out in surgery so yay me i had a nice sleep.

I had open heart surgery when I was 22. I would have had it earlier, but lucky me, I got pregnant. I had a valve repaired, but I'm looking at having another procedure in the future, perhaps not that distantly, not completely sure yet. I had it done at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. They are very knowledgeable, and very talented, but some of them have very poor bedside manners. (like they're good and they know it)

Overall my experience was a very positive one....and like TJL said...thank GOD for painkillers.

They call it open heart surgery because they open your heart....lol

I hope your friend has a positive experience, and makes a quick recovery.

Aw, I'm sorry.

My cousin was born with a hole in her heart and it never bothered and I don't know why doctors never fixed it, they just didn't. Anyways she didn't take any medication for her heart and she had a totally normal and healthy life and her condition never got in the way of anything. But then one day, January 28, 1998, she just collapsed in gym class and couldn't be revived. She was rushed to the hospital and had doctors work on her but she never came back. :( She died when she was 14. *sighs* Its just sad... I dont know. I don't really like to remember it cuz we were real close. :(

In 8th grade, I discovered a lump on my upper back close to my shoulder. I thought it was a tumor and it bothered me for months (both mentally and physically.) In January of 2000 I had surgery to remove the growth. It was nothing but a cyst. I was so freaked out before the surgery because I had never been under the knife. It wasn't so bad after all. They walked me to the operating table, I layed down, they put a mask over my nose and mouth which breathed nitrous oxide, and that is the last thing I remember. When I woke up, the first thing I said was, "Is it over?" I missed almost a week of school.

Old thread but surgeries are a part of many lives.

I had an invasive major hip replacement 11 yrs ago and it left me pretty G.D. damaged, lots of side effects from sawing and cutting out bones and pushing in metal and plastic parts. Many do OK, but many don't. I'm a don't. A walker is a major part of my life, the 4 extra legs to keep me walking and thank god no wheelchair.

I had a blood tumor removed from my chest when I was baby. Then I had a bone spur removed from my leg when I was 14, had to stay in the hospital for 2 days. Had a C-section when I was in my mid 30's. Had a tumor removed from my upper back, same day surgery and had a melanoma skin cancer growth removed from my leg a couple of years ago, it was same day surgery too. Hope I won't have to have any more surgeries.

Oh, I forget to mention I also had knee replacement surgery back in late August 2021.

How was your recovery process? My mom might have to get it done as her arthritis has gotten worse. She knows four people around her age who had it done and they all said the recovery is very grueling. That’s why she’s trying to prolong getting the knee replacement for as long as possible.

Btw, I also had to have my gallbladder removed five years ago.

To be honest, it took quite a while to heal. I couldn’t be too active, which is no surprise, but it irked the hell out of me. I couldn’t even attend family gatherings weeks post to my knee replacement surgery because my knee was killing me. It wasn’t until around my mother’s birthday party that I started to really recover. I mostly used Tylenol and Omega XL after my surgery.

Any time the body is CUT, and the older a person is, the longer and harder the recovery. I posted about my 2 surgeries and I am pretty much handicap from those "elective" surgeries...not a matter and live or death surgeries, elective....

Depending on much cutting is done on the body, many go right into more arthritis.

My knee is messed up from the hip job and would not cut it open for anything...I know
what I'm living with now and don't know what I could end up with, worse???????

If one can spend out of pocket, look at Prolotherapy work.

And it's true we can do so much self healing but MOST Americans run to docs for the
surgeries and drugs.

Just heard this heart wrenching story about a son talking of his mother's back surgeries:

I listen to Dr Darrow every Saturday and some days are full of horrible storiesl.

A man called in about his mother who is 73 and bed ridden, The poor woman has been
thru 6 back surgeries and is worse off than ever, duh...this is normal.

He was calling in for her knees and back and the saga of being told bone on bone...Darrow
says and I hear this all the time, everyone gets this dx, bone on bone, bone on bone, bone on bone, it's a mantra of a ortho surgeon.....blah I say.

You can walk now, even if it's not the greatest, keep walking and keep knives from
our body. j

Keep in mind the medical industry businesses are called Medical Practices, and that is what
they do.

1. Tonsils - child. Don't know how it goes now, but back in the 50s, quite common. You got a sore throat, out they came.

2. Gall bladder - they cut a slit or two in your gut, and suck it out, I guess.

3. Hernia - they make an incision and I guess insert a mesh.

4. Mohs surgery (for skin cancer, particularly for squamous cell carcinoma) -- horrible, IMO. (for the squeamish, don't read on). Heavy local--then they literally slice and rip you open. They then cut out the cancer, temporarily stitch you up, and you wait in the waiting area, bandaged up while they test the edges of the cancer in their on-site lab. If you're lucky, they tell you they got it all. If not, back you go and they go in again. This continues until they inform you they got it all.

My advice? If, after a biopsy, a dermatologist tells you you need this, ask for a cream called Efudex (it has a generic equivalent). It is applied to the affected area twice daily for two weeks (some drs. will say a month, but that's too long). This WORKS!

IMO, drs. want the Mohs to make more money. I've had other suspect spots in the years-ago Mohs area, applied Effudex, and it "lit up," (meaning it "found" a cancer) and the area healed.

Squamous cell is not to be ignored. Unlike less serious skin cancers (basal cell carcinoma, pre-cancerous actinic keratosis), squamous can and does metastasize (possibly spread to internal organs). Again, the cream WORKS, but probably this is considered off-label use.

Obviously I'm not a doctor--I just consider Mohs to be horrible, and EXTREMELY invasive. It never hurts to ask the doctor for this alternative.

My mother also had Mohs, and she cried when she saw the mess her shoulder was in. I don't blame her--it looked awful.

I too had tonsils taken out at 6 yrs old so that was in 1944 or. Then some tissue grew back when I was 21 and had the tissue scraped out, boy that was so painful as I remember. Whether all these tonsil surgeries are necessary, I question today. I had a lot of sore throats growing up and since on grape seed ex in 1995, I have not had a sore
throat is 27 or so yrs.

Hysterectomy in the early 80's and glad I had it, but left with a sciatic nerve damage I've lived with for 40 some yrs...It's lessened in all these years but it's still there.

Then the mess hip replacement in 2010 and knee "clean out" in 2016 which I believe should have never been done as all the good stuff that was in the knee area was cleaned out. And I'm walking but it's a challenge every step I take. With a walker.

A friend went thru a lot of surgery for the squamous cell skin cancer and has lived with 50+ yrs of neuropathy.

My daughter has 2 damaged feet from collapsed tendons from a drug, Cipro the antiobiotic, this class of abx can do a lot of damage...and she sure got it. Fluoroquinolone antibiotics Damage.. Never knew the dangers of Cipro. So many drugs cause damage that people are not aware of.

cpmaz: good that you have no issues with plate and screws, I've heard some horror stories on these in surgeries. I don't know if the surgeon used screws in my hip replacement or cement or both to put the artificial parts in my hip. It's not been a pleasure regardless.

You mention "the rest of me"...I've been studying alternative healing for over 30 yrs and love to try to figure things out for me and for others....Ask if you want and I can try to offer some healing advice.:cool:
