View Full Version : Freddie's funeral music
I don't want to bring anyone down by talking about Freddie's funeral after the excitement of Chicosladyfair interview with Isaac, but i was wondering,Does anyone know any of the songs they played/sang at Freddie's funeral?
Or who sang?
I was listening to one of my favorite tapes this morning and it has the song Peace in the Valley and lately when i hear that song i think about Freddie, hoping that he has finally found peace in the valley.
Anyway,I was just curious.
bella66 07-31-2001, 11:30 PM Don't know, but I do like that song! Especially when Elvis sings it. It would have been a good song for Freddie.
Cheryl Harrell 08-01-2001, 09:44 AM I never heard what was played at his funeral. PEACE IN THE VALLEY by Elvis is a good one. My hubby loves that one cuz he is a big Elvis fan. I think Freddie found Peace In The Valley up in heaven. We miss him even tho we never knew him but I'll see him in heaven one day & thank him for making my 40's a little brighter.

chicosladyfair 08-01-2001, 03:07 PM If I could ever get up enough money at one time I would buy those documents on Freddie that I would like to have. I keep tossing the idea of having them back and forth. Sometimes I would like to have them for the info value...but then other times I feel like they shouldn't be for the public to see. I do know that in these documents are the funeral arrangements. That must mean, guests, music, what flowers from whom, and I imagine what he was wearing. All that stuff is part of the arrangements. Our family has been through enough funerals in the past couple of years to know what all it entails.
Cheryl Harrell 08-01-2001, 06:43 PM I'd love to know all the info. I think it could be shared in a tasteful way...
Pitooey 08-01-2001, 08:54 PM I would want to know myself. Especially what he was wearing. I don't think it's grusome. It's only that I would've liked to have known.
Chicosladyfair,
not that i would really like them or could afford them but where could you get that info?Especially after so many years.
The first time i was able to locate any Freddie memorbilia on ebay i found a copy of Carroll Oconnor's funeral program.
Cheryl Harrell 08-02-2001, 08:15 AM I too would love to know what he was wearing. I read in his mothers book that whent he did the surgery on his head they had to shave his head. How sad that he lsot his beautiful hair. That's probably whay I'm assuming it was a closed casket. Poor baby. I was watching a coupla Della episodes last nite & noticed how thin he was. I bet those pills kept him from eating. he looked like he didn't feel well but was trying so hard not to show it & do a good job. http://www.sitcomsonline.com/ubb/frown.gif It upset me so bad & made me sooo sad that I wound up having to get a coupla hankys...
MariposaLKB 08-02-2001, 08:49 AM Oh I know, Cheryl, I think he looked at his worst in those episodes introducing Della and the first episode of season 3 which preceded them, when Chico gets his own apartment. Oddly enough the episode they chose to run the night after he shot himself and was still clinging to life was the boxer episode, in which he looked so fabulous in those trunks, lean and muscular! I think his mother's book stated that he lost about 40 pounds very quickly near the end of his life due to the pills, going from 204 pounds when the show started down to about 150--at 6 feet two that is scary!
I agree it is so sad that his beautiful hair had to be shaved for surgery which offered no real hope of recovery anyway. And I have always wondered how they dressed him for the funeral. Even in the case of an open casket at one funeral I attended, the deceased had been ill for so long that they dressed him in pajamas and a robe, which was what he wore all the time the last few years of his life. I wonder if they bothered to dress Freddie in a suit?

Cheryl Harrell 08-02-2001, 09:16 AM Wow, I didn't know he had been 204 lbs! Even in the earlier epsiodes he still looked skinny. But later on he looked even skinnier like skin & bones. In those Della episodes he looked so boney. Poor baby. Back then I had no idea, I just assumed he was naturally thin. I'd read that in his moms book about his weight loss. I'm assuming that they buried him in a suit since he dressed like that in real life. But I really have no idea tho. I remember his mom said in her book that he was buried with his Bible. How sweet! Bless his dear heart...
croiter 08-02-2001, 12:07 PM I remember Kathy saying in an interview that Freddie had a pair of beat up old brown shoes that she absolutely hated. Then she added that he was buried in them.
chicosladyfair 08-02-2001, 12:48 PM I wonder if she did that out of sincere love because he liked the shoes or if it was just one last act of defiance?
That seems really odd to me that she would do that.
Luckymama58 08-02-2001, 03:47 PM I agree, chicosladyfair, that is an odd thing to do. Which interview are you refering to, croiter? I didn't know Kathy did any other interviews other than the E! special and I have seen that one so many times I practically have it memorized. Just curious, cause I didn't think she spoke much about Freddie! Thanks! BTW this is an interesting thread!
Cheryl Harrell 08-02-2001, 06:22 PM I'd love to see her interview. It would tell us more. Didn't know that about the shoes. I wonder if maybe she did it to seem like she was a loving wife & kinda cover up the fact they were in divorce proceedings...
chicosladyfair 08-02-2001, 06:59 PM I don't know about y'all but I would have thought twice about the beat up shoes. The only way I would have sent Freddie to the other side with those shoes on would have been if they held some kind of fond, sentimental value for him. If they had just been his kick-around shoes...then I think I would have opted for brand new ones. Maybe the shoes were a source of aggravation between the two of them and she just wanted to have the last word..LOL. Sort of a "since you loved these shoes so much...you can just spend eternity with them!" type thing. Who knows? I would love to read that interview though. I'm guessing it was from a news article and not on film as we would have probably scouted it down by now. http://www.sitcomsonline.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
Chicosladyfair,
I love that last post, that it kind of what it seems to me too.like here then!
But i wonder though if she knew it would be closed casket no one would know(But then why announce it in an interview?)Go Figure.
Maybe it was chosen by Maria on her son's behalf. Take this kind of thing
catcopy18 08-03-2001, 06:48 PM It sounds to me like his mother was more involved than Kathy when Freddie was in the hospital and after he passed away. Why wouldn't she have been the one the choose what he wore anyway? If Kathy and Freddie were legally separated and in the process of divorcing, why would she have ANY say in what he wore? I'm confused!
I buried my dad in a pair of his favorite old comfortable bedroom slippers because no one ever sees what's on the feet anyway.
Karen64 08-04-2001, 10:41 AM We'll probably never know what all he wore to be buried in unless Kathy or his mom give a tell-all interview or have already one that we don't know about. They're probably the only ones that know...(if he did have a closed-casket ceremony)
I agree that his mother seemed more involved and would have been the one to pick what he wore...
hillbilly 08-10-2001, 12:47 PM Jenny I have read in one of my papers of Freddie. That he wore a tux and his old brown shoes. This was in the Midnight Globe."Kathy said he was buried in a beautiful black tuxedo and those beat-up brown shoes."

MariposaLKB 08-10-2001, 02:36 PM Hillbilly, thanx so mucho for sharing that! I was kinda hoping he was buried in his tux, since that was the thing most appropriate to how beautiful he was. With that being the case, I bet that the shoes were not a nasty gesture on Kathy's part, but rather because they were his favorites. So he was buried in the clothes he looked best in and the shoes he loved most--works for me!

Hillbilly,
I'm so glad you found that article. It's good to know. In every picture i've ever seen of himwearing a tux he looked so beautiful.
Pitooey 08-10-2001, 06:17 PM Hillbilly - I'm so glad that they put the tux. on Freddie. I know I would have put that on him too. Thank you for letting us know beacause I'd always wondered what he had on when he was buried. As for the brown shoes.... If those were his absolute favorite than I say okay because they were a part of who he was.
Vicki39 08-11-2001, 10:36 AM Chicosladyfair, what documents are you taking about??? Is this something on ebay. I only get to read this board on the weekends and it sounds like I missed something. You know I felt really funny about reading parts of Freddie's diary that were mentioned in his mother's book. So I understand how you feel, but my curiousty gets the best of me. I guess that is some of the price of being in the public eye..
Vicki39 08-11-2001, 10:47 AM Guys, I have wondered all this stuff for years. There is nothing morbid about it. At least I don't think so....I guess it depends on the amount of damage poor Freddie suffered to his head as to whether it was a closed casket or not. I can't imagine all that beautiful hair gone. And did Freddie love or hate those brown shoes---I'm not getting that part. If he hated them, why did he not just pitch em'?
MariposaLKB 08-11-2001, 12:03 PM I think now that it is entirely possible that the casket would have been open, since he was dressed in his tux. That says to me that whoever made the decision about clothes wanted him to look as good as possible for the people who would see him. And everyone knew that his head was damaged and there was a bandage around it, so I can imagine that as long as his beautiful face was not affected, the shock of seeing him like that would not have been any worse than the fact that he was gone from them, which is bad enough I know. To some people, being able to see the deceased is comforting and his family and friends might have felt that way for the most part. As for the shoes, I think that they were his favorites or yes they would have been long gone. I think the person who decided on them was thinking in terms of the fact that no one else would see them and Freddie would have wanted them.

hillbilly 08-11-2001, 07:49 PM MariposaLKb, In the paper I had,It said Kathy picked out his clothes. And the brown shoes was his favorite.

chicosladyfair 08-12-2001, 10:46 AM I highly doubt that it was an open casket service. If there had been surgery on his head...in addition to the injury and all of his hair being gone I don't think his family would have gone with an open casket. As far as what he was wearing...provided it was closed casket...I'm sure Kathy and his mother would have wanted Freddie looking his best under the circumstances. It is to give them peace of mind knowing that he looked good.

Cheryl Harrell 08-13-2001, 05:35 AM Aww, that is so sad that he was buried in his tux but so sweet too. Bless his heart. I've always heard that they don't usually bury folks with their shoes on so I suspect he was buried with the beat up ones cuz he loved them so much...
