View Full Version : Does anyone remember the "Very Special" Belvedere?
obiemookie 12-10-2002, 05:48 PM I'm wondering if anyone remembers the "Very Special" Belvedere where Wesley gets touched by a camp counsellor.
Just wondering if anyone remembers this episode.
boechsner 12-10-2002, 10:43 PM Well, sure. The episode is called The Counselor and ended with Christopher Hewitt and Brice Beckham addressing the audience instead of Belvedere writing in his journal. It's really no more special than the AIDS episode, called Wesley's Friend.

The episode aired on May 6, 1988 and I have the original broadcast on tape. You must have missed it.
Mcfly 01-17-2003, 01:24 AM Hey, Boesh, cool to have a fellow Belvey-ite around here.
I also have that as part of my 8-tape Belvey collection.
Yep, the one ep of the whole series run that didn't end with Belvey writing in his journal.
gerrya 02-22-2003, 12:13 AM Guys...for those who don't remember the episode, I have a detailed summary of it on my site here:

A Very Special Mr. Belvedere (http://muesproductions.com/tag/mr-belvedere/)
'80sSitcoms 01-28-2015, 09:21 AM Yeah, I vividly remember seeing it as a kid.
Mace Dolex 01-28-2015, 02:13 PM It's uploaded on Youtube too, I just saw it recently to refresh my memory how it went.
Why exactly do most viewers consider this the "jump the shark (https://web.archive.org/web/20070108221927/http://www.jumptheshark.com/m/mrbelvedere.htm)" moment? It isn't like other '80s sitcoms didn't do "very special episodes" (for better or worse) about child abuse?
'80sSitcoms 01-30-2015, 09:40 AM I don't consider it a JTS episode. Not at all.
catnap1972 02-23-2015, 06:28 PM Was just on AntennaTV.
mets82 02-23-2015, 07:33 PM I never thought Mr. Belvedere did special episodes but I guess I was wrong. Seemed odd to do a special episode considering how the show was up until that point. It really was never heavy handed. I am at the library so I missed the episode. Kind of glad I did though.
BigManMike 02-23-2015, 07:46 PM Oh man I missed it. Got off work late today and had to take a nap. Hopefully I'll catch it when it runs again on a weekend but that won't be until later this spring or possibly even summer.

Yeah I just watched it today! You might be able to catch the ep on the weekend soon. I noticed with Mr. Belvedere they rerun eps that were just shown not too long ago I noticed! ;)

Mr. Belvedere had some other serious episodes besides that one. There were episodes that dealt with issues like one of Wesley's classmates having Aids, Marsha being addicted to uppers and Heather almost getting date raped. Even the episode where Kevin was drinking had a pretty serious tone to it.
Mace Dolex 02-23-2015, 11:55 PM I'm just glad they didn't feel the need for a stunt casting like having Nancy Reagan drop by the Owens' residence.

This is why I think Mr. Belvedere is a great show. It deals with some really deep subjects, but also retains humor and doesn't get too preachy! The Owens family are down to earth, and can very much be related to. They seem real. And how cool to have a wise, English housekeeper! But he is also a friend and part of the family. That is why I loved this show first run and why I love and am enjoying it very much in reruns! :) ;)

I didnt know about those. I stand corrected in saying that the show didnt have any serious undertones.

It really is as relevant today as it was back in the 80's. I can't understand why it disappeared from syndication for so long.
I liked the ep. I was expecting something more along the lines of the Diff'rent Strokes ep, but it was different and very well done. The main thing for me was that they never portrayed Wesley as an oblivious victim -- they kept him in character and had him be very smart about the entire situation. He knew what was up, he didn't freak out, but he still knew it was wrong. In the end, him turning the guy in was less about him and more about protecting a kid who might not be as a smart as he was. Pretty good stuff.
This is the show that made me post here again after 3 years lol
catnap1972 03-10-2015, 05:14 PM Tonight's the episode where Mr. Belvedere takes the Porsche out in the rain to go after Wesley (who snuck out) and wraps the car around a tree, ending up with him in the hospital in a coma.
catnap1972 03-12-2015, 09:57 AM Early next week looks like another 'very special episode" on Antenna TV..."Homecoming" aka "The Jock That Almost Rapes Heather". George *should've* killed the guy but I can understand the reasoning for not going that route...
mets82 03-12-2015, 06:06 PM Hey, if your a father, you do ANYTHING to protect your daughter.
catnap1972 03-16-2015, 05:34 PM Heather (talking to Keith on the porch): "My father has this weird kind of radar"
As George opens the door
If he did (have that kind of radar) Keith would've been kicked in the nuts right then and there.

Didn't Happy Days do an episode almost exactly with Ritchie hospitalized? Although I dont remember what reason for only I remember Fonzie pleading to God to let Ritchie live.
