View Full Version : Favorite Character? Stormtracker TF 11-29-2002, 10:11 PM Who is it? And why? Arfies 11-29-2002, 11:27 PM Oh, gosh- pretty much everybody!! So I'll name why: Samantha: Not at all the stereotypical dumb blonde (Yay! Finally! A blonde TV role model for me who's actually SMART!!:D ). Has a great sense of humor; is a wonderful wife, mom, and friend to those she knows; a fantastic problem-solver so it's win-win for everybody; yet, she's imperfect, making her seem more "human." Darrin: (Dick York's portrayal- more three-dimensional than Dick Sargent's. But Sargent did the best he could in some tough shoes to fill.:) ) He could get as hilariously angry at being turned into who-knows-what, but always stayed with Sam because he really did love her. When Sam was crying after he gave her a watch inscribed with "I Love You Every Second" on it, he gets choked up himself as he tries to wipe away Sam's tears. Whenever he blew up at Sam, he always came back apologizing sincerely. As the Bewitched Critic put it, "Dick York is always at his best when he's apologizing, calling himself every numb nut name in the book and feeling so bad for being such a jerk -- who couldn't forgive him?" Endora: Sure, she always tried to break up the Stephens' marriage, but only because she really just wanted (what she thought was) the best for her daughter. Still, whenever Darrin was being a jerk, she was never afraid to tell him just that. More to come..... buddy love 11-30-2002, 12:48 AM This show is full of great characters--played by first class actors. Dick York's performance of Darrin Stephens is one of the best male television performances of the '60's. He and Samantha had passion and a sincerity which many television couples never had. When Dick Sargent took over the love story angle really went by the way side--though he had a way with a one-liner. Who couldn't love Elizabeth Montgomery? She was beautiful, sly, sexy, and smart. Agnes Moorehead as Endora is the mediums ultimate interfering mother in law. Moorehead brought a lot of class to the part. David White was the ultimate sly fox conniving business man as Larry Tate. Alice Pearce as Gladys was hilarious. Marion Lorne as Aunt Clara was both endearing and funny. Paul Lynde, George Tobias, Sandra Gould...wonderful. LucyFan 11-30-2002, 04:52 AM I don't have a favorite character at this point. I haven't been watching the show regulary. I don't like to watch how Hallmark air their shows. It so degrading and annoying. When it comes to TV Land, I will definitely be watching the show and it will feel good to re-live some of those episodes which Nick at Nite aired awhile ago. Arfies 11-30-2002, 01:57 PM I hope that TV Land will do a better editing of the episodes than Hallmark did. That way I might be able to watch without as often saying, "Hey! Something's missing!) Stormtracker TF 12-02-2002, 11:41 PM Originally posted by LucyFan I don't have a favorite character at this point. I haven't been watching the show regulary. I only ever watched it once on N@N... *ShortCake* 12-03-2002, 03:09 PM My favorite will always be Sam. I LOVE HER!! I just always thought she was funny, very down to earth ( LOL).. and she put darrin in place when he needed to be. My second favorite was Endora. I just loved her sneakyness!! I guess it reminded me in a sense of Lucy Ricardo only with magic :D. DocL 12-03-2002, 06:57 PM Uncle Arthur! Why? Paul Lynde! Fonzie87 12-03-2002, 07:23 PM Originally posted by Arfies I hope that TV Land will do a better editing of the episodes than Hallmark did. Either her, or her cat! Arfies 12-03-2002, 08:06 PM No, I don't get Deja View. :( Speaking of Sam's cat- I thought she only had the cat for something like 2 episodes before Endora adopted it and named it Ophelia.... Fern 12-04-2002, 10:00 AM I loved Aunt Clara, she was so different from the rest of Sam's family. (for one thing, she really liked Darrin and for another, she always meant well). shocolah 12-14-2002, 03:34 AM Samantha, without a doubt! I love her facial expressions and it's great when she uses her witchcraft, especially wheter Darrin likes it or not. "Oh My Stars!" is my favorite thing she says. And somehow she always seems to be the one to figure out how to get out of a terrible mess usually created by her mother, or she'll come up with a brilliant solution to save one of Darrin's advertising accounts. Novarro 01-21-2003, 01:14 AM Almost all th echaracters were brilliant. Elizabeth Montgomery...wonderful as Samantha, a perfect piece of casting Dick York...hilarious as Darren, just wish he could have finished the series Marion Lorne..... delightful and lovable as Aunt Clara, she was irreplaceable David White.... really superb as Larry , you always knew there was extra dimension to Larry than just being money hungry. David White was a wonderful actor who handled a difficult role and made you like Larry. The Kravitzes...all of them totally brilliant And someone who gets very little attention ..Nancy Kovack who played the bitchy Sheila in not enough episodes. I always feel she almost stole the pilot episode with her goings on at the dinner party. A wonderful actress underused in the run of the series. Simon Novarro 01-21-2003, 01:17 AM Can anyone tell me WHY we are getting Happy Days pics and entries in the Bewitched room? Arfies 01-21-2003, 09:19 PM Simple- a Happy Days fan can also like Bewitched. And avatars and pictures show it. TVgen62 01-22-2003, 03:41 AM Originally posted by Novarro And someone who gets very little attention ..Nancy Kovack who played the bitchy Sheila in not enough episodes. Simon I remember seeing Nancy Kovack a few more times in 60's television, including: Bewitched - She returned, this time, as an eccentric Italian client of McMann and Tate. (She was a blond in this episode.) Serena turned her into a monkey when she flirted with Darrin. Batman: As a blond, she appears in an episode with The Joker. What was her true hair color? Only her hairdresser knows for sure. (Raise your hand if you remember that commercial slogan. No, it's not one of Darrin's!) pandora_spocks 01-22-2003, 04:22 PM My favorite character is Samantha. She is so smart and strong, and she practically would've given up everything for Darrin. This shows you how much she truly loved him. And as for Elizabeth playing Samantha I couldn't imagine anyone else with this role (not even today ;)) because Elizabeth put so much of herself into the role. That's who made Samantha so charming and bewitching. Novarro 01-22-2003, 05:35 PM Its nice if you like both series as I do too but please keep the entries here to those that deal with Bewitched. Happy days has a great section in sitcoms on line which you can also enter with material. Thanks Classic FOL Fanatic 01-22-2003, 10:17 PM I like Samantha. She's just an amazing character: caring, nice, smart. She never gives up for what she believes in. She's great! :) 60sSitcomFan 01-23-2003, 09:08 PM Samantha, hands down. CollegeGirl 01-23-2003, 09:42 PM Originally posted by Novarro Its nice if you like both series as I do too but please keep the entries here to those that deal with Bewitched. Happy days has a great section in sitcoms on line which you can also enter with material. Thanks No one posted Happy Days pictures on this board. The pictures that you are seeing are the ones in people's avatar's and signatures. These are set in the user cp. They are images that stay with people's names permanently (until changed). Most people have them. They are what make the people unique-- their place to display their favorite pictures. Believe me, lots of fans of other sitcoms have their signatures on the Happy Days board even though they are not Happy Days pictures. The same is true of just about every other sitcom. My faves are Samantha, Tabitha, Aunt Clara, Serena, Endora trekkie 04-08-2003, 09:01 PM The first Darren; Larry Tate coming a close second behind. To me, Darren is just so great at facial expressions and comedy in general. Samantha is wonderful, though. I know that it's the 21st century, but Samantha is soooo darn attractive :) dramastudent 06-19-2003, 12:21 AM There was no bad casting on that show - everyone was good So I am choosing my favorite character based on who I would like to be..... Endora 1. good wardrobe 2. used her powers 3. could go to Paris for lunch Raven-Symone 06-19-2003, 12:49 AM I like Samantha/Serena and Darrin, Tabitha I don't know why I like them just that I do. Chad22 06-19-2003, 07:57 PM My Favorite Character Is Aunt Clara. I Always like the episodes shes in. Novarro 06-19-2003, 11:01 PM Also another wonderful character/performer on "Bewitched", was the supremely talented Mabel Albertson who played Phyllis Stephens, Darrin's mother. She was wonderful in the role and her mortal version of Endora was always a laugh a minute. In particular I always love all her confrontation scenes with Endora, two strong women going at it with each other. Their scenes together are some of the very best on "Bewitched". Like all the other superb talents on this wonderful series Mabel Albertson is greatly missed, RIP Martina 06-28-2003, 01:51 AM 1. Endora --she's hilarious 2. Gladys Kravitz---ditto 3. Aunt Clara----double ditto TVgen62 07-01-2003, 12:07 AM Originally posted by pandora_spocks My favorite character is Samantha. I never knew Liz was binary! Janice 07-01-2003, 01:43 AM Originally posted by Novarro Also another wonderful character/performer on "Bewitched", was the supremely talented Mabel Albertson who played Phyllis Stephens, Darrin's mother. I enjoyed Mabel Albertson as well. I just recently learned that she was Jack Albertson's sister. My favorite on Bewitched is Samantha. I enjoyed her presence the most. Crimson and Clover 07-01-2003, 02:09 AM Samantha Kristina 07-01-2003, 10:11 AM Samantha is my favorite! I like the first Darrin too, but the second one is just annoying. Lizzie McGuire 07-04-2003, 01:55 PM I like Samantha and Darrin Brian 07-05-2003, 12:49 AM I can't choose just one but I say Aunt Clara, Gladys Kravitz, and Abner Kravitz are my favorites. Aunt Clara always had a way of goofing things up. I can't wait until I see the episode "The Short Happy Circuit of Aunt Clara" in which she accidentally turns off all the lights on the entire Eastern Seaboard. Gladys and Abner are the best tv couple in my opinion. I love it when Gladys sees something unusual, screams "Abner, Abner!" and runs away. George Tobias was funny too. He would always come up with something funny to say to Gladys. The third season is coming up and with it a new actress for Gladys. I wonder if I'll like the new Gladys. rml83 07-05-2003, 11:31 AM I don't think there's a single character on the entire show that I DIDN'T like and while I love Samantha as much as the next person, Dick York's Darrin was always my favorite. Then when Sargent took over, I still liked Darrin all right but I think Endora and Samantha became my favorite characters then. *Liz Bewitched Me* 07-05-2003, 07:04 PM Samantha and Darrin (Dick York) Are my favorites. Impressions 07-11-2003, 11:08 AM I think these four characters got the most of laughs, they were all like second bananas to Samantha and Darrin: 1. Abner Kravitz and Gladys Kravitz 2. Endora 3. Aunt Clara 4. Uncle Arthur Goodnight Gracie 08-13-2003, 01:29 AM Sam, Just because. LucyFan 08-23-2003, 02:19 AM These are my favorites: 1) Samantha because she was smart and always came up with a plan to solve her problems whenever they came up. 2) This is probably my very favorite: Aunt Clara. She was the sweetest witch of them all. 3) Gladys Kravitz (#1) . . . I love her facial expressions when she saw the magic and then went screaming to Abner. lol, she was like the 2nd funniest. 4) Tabitha . . . just because she was sweet, innocent, and cute! Novarro 08-24-2003, 06:59 PM Yes I like all the characters mentioned but another fav of mine, and she is only a very occasional guest star I know, is Nancy Kovack. A wonderful element in the series as a rival to Samantha and a very fine actress indeed. Her scenes with Samantha are wonderfully bitchy. ajberryjr 09-06-2006, 04:41 PM Here's an interesting take I found on what a Sam vs. Sheila Part III might have looked like! Funny stuff, except for Sheila! http://www.geocities.com/st_pierre_2000/sam_vs_sheila.html And someone who gets very little attention ..Nancy Kovack who played the bitchy Sheila in not enough episodes. I always feel she almost stole the pilot episode with her goings on at the dinner party. A wonderful actress underused in the run of the series. Simon comedyfreak 09-07-2006, 08:20 AM That was good, thanks for the laugh. ajberryjr 09-07-2006, 05:39 PM Yes, very well done and I think the original images look like they were manipulated from the Harpie's Bewitched site. I personally always thought Sheila would either end up in a pool or with a face full of cream pie. Any other thoughts? That was good, thanks for the laugh. comedyfreak 09-11-2006, 05:28 AM I personally always thought Sheila would either end up in a pool or with a face full of cream pie. Any other thoughts? Me too...I would have liked to see an episode where Sheila learns that being a snob is not all it's cracked up to be, Sam would be a good teacher. Then at the end there is a truce between the two of them. catlover79 01-10-2007, 08:38 PM Samantha and Darrin (DY). Who wouldn't want to have a love like theirs? From everything I've read DY was so much in love with his real life wife (they were married for over 40 years until he passed on) that he was able to bring that to the role. It seems as if he brought a lot of himself into Darrin. According to the book Bewitched Forever, even HE thought Darrin was too harsh on Samantha about witchcraft. He also made it clear that Darrin didn't want Sam to use her powers for fear that others would find out and take her away from him. This comes out beautifully in the 4th season episode "I Confess". Endora reminds me so much of my grandmother (my father's mother, in this case) with her sly, sarcastic sense of humor and deep voice. Plus no one could laugh like Agnes Moorehead! Aunt Clara of course was a sweetie and the Kravitzes (with Alice Pearce as Gladys) were a riot. Abner had some of the best one liners in sitcom history, IMHO. AB 01-10-2007, 09:19 PM Sam and Serena- Sam was a sweetheart and Serena was the swinger. Tap Dancer 04-25-2007, 07:41 AM Samantha! She's the perfect wife, mother, and friend. Who wouldn't love her? :) Yooch 04-25-2007, 11:43 PM Samantha. mrs.gingerhinkley 04-26-2007, 05:05 PM Gladys Kravitz!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! "ABNER!"  :D she was hysterical luved Endora to! such the mother-in-law!!!! ;) Chachi'88 02-20-2010, 04:42 AM 1 Dairrin, I enjoy too much the situation in which there is (married to a witch, forced to endure the troubles of all the relatives of the bride) 2 Samantha is beautiful, sexy and cute 3 Uncle Arthur, I think is the best of the relatives of Samantha MickeyMac 02-20-2010, 03:09 PM Anybody want to take a guess as to who my favorite character is :D :happyface catlover79 02-20-2010, 05:30 PM Anybody want to take a guess as to who my favorite character is :D :happyface Gee, is she blond with a name beginning with "S"? ;) MickeyMac 02-20-2010, 06:03 PM Gee, is she blond with a name beginning with "S"? ;) You're on the right track :) ;) OH Nuts! 02-20-2010, 11:22 PM All the Bewitched characters were great but MY ALL TIME FAV is Aunt Clara! I just loved that sweet old witch and the way she always messed things up. And oy - that doorknob collection. LOL nobody had to guess what to get the old gal for her birthday. Next to Aunt Clara I like Endora bec. she is so glamourous & is such a bon vivant. Then Darrin's father (played by a Mr. Simon - there were two) BUT...the rest of the cast was fun too. Just...if you have to pick one or two I do have clear favs. catlover79 02-21-2010, 02:18 AM Who doesn't love Aunt Clara? According to everything I've read, Marion Lorne was every bit as nice and sweet as her alter ego - and collected doorknobs herself!! In fact, I believe the doorknobs in Aunt Clara's collection you saw onscreen were from Marion's own collection. :D |
