When I say this, I mean that he was one of the major keys to the success of the show, making it the special show that it was (in addition to Sherwood Schwartz). He was a trained Shakespearean actor. Acting Shakespeare was what he would have rather been doing, while he was making the show.
But his conscientiousness as an actor. His constant criticism of the scripts. These things really put a challenge to the production of the show. He brought a realism that would not have been there otherwise. He had an influence as well on the other actors of the show.
He was the key ingredient to what the show became.
