View Full Version : It Needs to be on TV Land
Adamantium 11-09-2002, 01:03 AM I remember watching this sitcom when it was on Nick at Nite. I have the 1st two episodes on tape and just watched them the other day. This sitcom is hilarious. Why it's not on TV Land, I don't know. I have tried to find every episode on VHS, but have been unsuccessful. Also, I noticed that Al Lewis was not in the first two episodes, does anyone know when his debut was?
Brian 11-17-2002, 01:30 AM I don't know when Al Lewis's debut was but I know something: I wish TV Land would show Car 54. Everyone says it's a really funny show. If it is very funny (I have never seen it), why did it only last just two seasons? I guess it didn't have an audience.
Adamantium 11-17-2002, 02:50 PM I don't know why it was canceled, but it lasted 60 episodes. A lot of shows back then could only last a couple years and are today classics. Some are:
The Munsters (1964-1966)
The Addams Family (1964-1966)
The Monkees (1966-1968)
The Honeymooners (1 season,1955-1956)
Gilligan's Island (1964-1967)
It's not so much in quantity, but in quality.
Brian 11-18-2002, 09:48 PM The Munsters was cancelled because the producers refused to put the show in color despite a CBS order for them to do so (it was the start of the 1966-67 season; all the shows were in color by then). Gilligan's Island was cancelled to make room for Gunsmoke. I guess the networks back then didn't realize that they were producing and cancelling too soon shows that would later turn out to be classics.
fore284 01-09-2003, 05:05 PM I wish they would put Car 54 on TVLand that would be great.

I'm not certain when Al Lewis made his debut, but before he became "Officer Schnauser", he appeared in episode # 7 ("Paint Job") as a guy working in an auto body shop which was really a front for a stolen car ring. I believe that Billy Sands (who later played "Tinker" in McHale's Navy) was his partner in the body shop. Toody and Muldoon bang up their squad car, and bring it into the body shop for a quick repair and paint job so they won't get in trouble with Captain Block. They end up getting back the wrong car, however.
fore284 03-26-2003, 05:59 PM They should play me all the old shows that orginally were on Nick at Nite when it started.
BundyBoy10 04-24-2003, 10:54 PM Perfect TV LAND Kitschen show. It would be great during that particular timeslot.
fore284 04-25-2003, 09:07 PM I really do wish it was.
BundyBoy10 04-26-2003, 10:14 PM The chances for it returning to NAN or TV Land are slim. Thats what I think...:(
fore284 04-28-2003, 07:30 PM Why do you say that?
goaliemom 06-09-2003, 01:01 AM I really hope they decide to bring this back. At least it would be nice to see once a week, if that is all they can give it. It was funny. Nice to see these characters work together before the Munsters. They really clicked!
bearcat 06-26-2003, 11:27 PM Hello all,
this show will re-run in canada next september at tv land canada,my vcr is ready:)
BrandonS 06-27-2003, 10:40 PM As most of you probably know, the head writer, Nat Hiken, was a comic genius who also did "Sgt. Bilko." I wish it were on some channel or other.
fore284 07-20-2003, 10:34 AM Maybe since there puting it on in canada on tvland in the fall they will put it on in the us soon after that.
jatm27 08-11-2003, 10:46 PM Yes, Nat Hiken was a genius. There is a great book written about his life that came out about 2 years ago. It is well worth picking up.
sam56 02-04-2004, 06:54 PM We all wish that Car 54 came to TVLand but it doesn't look like it will anytime soon.

Al Lewis also appeared in another episode before becoming Officer Schnauser. It was about an older lady that refused to move from her condemned building. I don't remember the name of the episode though.
Fred Gwynne Fan 03-19-2005, 11:27 PM I know I've put in 2 requests at TVLand in the form of posts but
who can tell if anyone even considers what's posted under 'programming
suggestions'. Think I'm preachin' to the choir.

And if you watch these two classics back to back, you'll notice a similarity in style. In the same vein, I noticed that Fred Gwynne played the role of an eating champion in an episode of "Sgt. Bilko." That's probably how he became acquainted with Nat Hiken and landed the co-starring role in "Car 54..."
CoolTubeTv 11-06-2005, 12:08 AM I loved that show and your right it has got to get on Tv land.
