View Full Version : Down With The School System!!
school sux 11-08-2002, 06:54 PM The problem with the school system is simple. The emphasis is placed too much on a letter, rather than actual knowledge! In other words, You get a grade based on how much busy work you do, not how much you know! I had a friend who got straight A's throughout his four years of High School, I recently asked him what he had learned, his reply was "huh? I don't remember". This, my friends, is ridiculous! I, on the other hand, did not partake in any of the busy work and recieved D's and F's throughout my high school career did, in fact, learn a great deal.
The grading system needs a drastic make over. We have too many incompetent people in high end jobs just because they did a whole lot of bullsh*t busy work throughout high school and college. This is also why W is in office! God help this country!
AllIWantIsYourClutch 11-08-2002, 07:09 PM Actually, I see what you mean. Like in my Math and Biology classes...they don't even grade our homework. They just see that we did it. My biology teacher told us today that he doesn't care if we get everything on our homework wrong, he just wants to see that we did it....

Ya last year my spanish teacher didnt check the homework, she just glanced at it to see that we did it and marked in in the gradebook. So i didnt waste my time trying to do it, i just slapped down a buncha gibberish :)

Ya that's what my teachers do.... only I take the time to do it because you never know when they're gonna say "I'm collecting homework!" and sometimes they do do that...
Half the kids fail because they don't do their homework. But when it comes time to take standardized testing like the MCAS (Massachusetts Assesment Comprehensive System), IOWA tests, or so on and so forth, half the kids PASS because they are smart!
Georgia's on my Mind 11-08-2002, 08:42 PM ahh i agree....perfect example: My english teacher said read a book and do a 4 page essay and he would collect it...um 3 weeks ago....he totally forgot and half the people in the class did it and told him!!! and he is like "In my country we don't rape books...." Ok This guy is getting on my nerves he doesnt understand anything!
-*Forever*- 11-08-2002, 08:55 PM We go over it in class and they call on random people... so if you don't have it, they know if you don't... that's why I failed Social Studies [but Mrs. Harrod decided to be nice and take away some of my zeros!! Yay for Mrs. Harrod!!!] My teachers are really nice, most of the time, so I don't mind going to school [ Mona... shushie. :p]
DarleneIllyria 11-08-2002, 08:58 PM Yeah, I agree the school systems are pretty messed up. Everything in my school was pretty screwed up. It seems like they cared more about how we were wearing our clothes instead of trying to teach us something. Then we have the class destractions. I can't tell you how many times the whole class got busy work because of one person shooting off their mouth. It really wasn't fair, but I learned long ago to suck it up and keep quiet about it.
The thing is the grades in my school were pretty heavy. We had the credit system and you had to have a certain amount of credits to graduate. You would think that would be enough, correct? Nope. Had to take this major test my Junior year in order to graduate. I think I can understand why they had the major tests. A person could cheat to get credits. I knew this one guy, and I don't think he knew how to read. I don't know if he was dyslexic (sp?) or what, but he usually copied other peoples work to get a good enough grade. So you see, a person could cheat to get the grades and still get a credit. However, you are all by yourself for those big tests. Everybody has different exams and you have no way of cheating off somebody elses paper.
Rockapella722 11-08-2002, 09:54 PM They should not give 'progress reports' or even grades anymore. I never study for tests, I memorize. I admit, I do it too. The only stuff I know is math and band.... biology and english I memorize for. I can honestly say I know next to nothing on those two subjects. Teachers should grade on effort, questions asked, class conversation participation, and conversations had with the students pertaining to the subjects being learned.

:rotflmao: This reminds me of a story...I shall tell.
So we have to do these Julius Caesar study guides for English and out teacher told us that she just gives us credit for doing them. So Leanne wrote for one of her answers "Yes, Brutus has a pet monkey." and some of Amirrah's answers were "The sheep frolic" "Brutus has a large farm" and "Brutus' camel has a big hump."
¤I Love Clay Aiken¤ 11-09-2002, 12:58 AM Ugh, they probably do all that for statistics on like who does the most homework in the US or whatever. Ya, all the teachers are like that. But then, you have the teachers who WANT you to absorb it, but some get like, obsessive over it. Ugh, I dunno. I did what I needed to get by (which didnt take much effort) and got mostly B's.

lol...on my spanish hw i would just write a buncha random letters and spanish words and if i got too impatient i would just scribble on the answer line. This year we hafta turn it in but she doesnt really check it so i write random spanish words and if im lazy i skip half of it and say i didnt understand it. The guys are just like that, 1ce i saw this guy's hw and he just wrote "el" on a line where u were sposed to write a whole sentence lol. My answer on that question was "si" cuz i just saw that it had question marks, not that i had ne idea what the question was.
Hollow 11-09-2002, 01:08 AM These were answers to social studies hw i turned in last year. I didnt know the answer so i decided to goof off and i still make silly answers like this when i dunno the real answer.

But anyway, I'm not a fond of major tests, especially those you need to take in order to get into the high school, junoir high school, college, etc. of your choice. They're pathetic. I mean, everything is determined by that ONE score; they don't even bother to see report cards or anything, which I think is really unjust. You can be the world's smartest kid, and the worst test-taker.

My biology teacher is like that, too. He just wants to see that we've tried. It never seems to matter whether we put down an answer that is right or wrong. I swear, most of my marks in my bio class is probably graded on my homework being finished and my labs and questions handed in. I try at tests, but even if I study, I just manage to pass. Tests just aren't my strong point.

I got a C- in english my 7th grade yr, a C+ in math, a D in Science, and a C in history... And a 98% in total on the iowa tests... a 99 in english comp and a 98 in math... lol... and i nearly failed those classes.
school sux 11-11-2002, 07:07 PM I actually think having to pass a test to graduate high school is a good thing. That's what we need! Too many people are passing with flying colors because they did four years of homework! WE NEED TO TEACH KIDS! NOT TORTURE THEM WITH HOMEWORK AND BUSY WORK!!!
In 11th grade I had a history teacher who never assigned homework, never gave us busy work, she just taught us what we needed to know. At the end of every week she would give us a test to see what we had learned, this determined who passed and who failed! That's the way every teacher should be! You can do homework till the day you die and never learn a thing!
Jinny Girl 11-11-2002, 07:21 PM last yr i got all Bs because my teachers changed my report card grades because i helped them carry heavy things (they were all old) and because i was nice. I literallty went through the computers to find I was getting all Cs and Ds and then my freport card was all whited out with Bs and As on it. Yes. its true. Teachers really do like suckups. However, even tho i technically got bad grades, I got a 99 (the highest score possible) on 2 of 4 parts on my HS entraqnce exam... and a 96 and a 93 on the other 2.
IownTheDivision69 11-11-2002, 07:23 PM yeah... i didn't read this post... but yeah! SCHOOL SUCKS!!!

In my school, we had tests on a regular basis. We didn't have a test at the end of every week, but I have done my fair share of tests.
I'm not much of a test taker either. I study my butt off to get the info crammed into my head, long enough to take the test. After the test was over, I would forget most of it. However, we had the 9 weeks tests too. It went over everything we had covered during the weeks. At hs they had the semester split into 2. 18 weeks per semester. I would have to cram everything back into my mind. Some things I could still remember.
I'm pretty weird with some tests. During my Senior year, I took this Business Law class. We went through chapters within 3 days. Day 1 to read the chapter. Day 2 and 3 to talk about the chapter and day 4 was test day. The 9 weeks tests were always open book. Even though I studied and I knew some of the answers, I insisted on looking up every answer. It just freaked me out if I thought I knew an answer, but it turned out to be wrong. Basically, I had fast fingers with the end tests.

Omg, I totally agree w/ you. I'm so ****ing sick of school anymore! I can say this b/c none of my teachers or anybody read these message boards. Honestly, I don't think I've learned anything since like junior high, or it's stuff that I already knew. Then, they wonder why the kids around here don't go to college and they end up barefoot & pregnant. I'm like, "****ing teach me something allready!" I hate doing busy work & I don't do homework. Last year, all my algebra teacher talked about was his religion, drugs, and government stuff. It seems to me that teachers just want to teach the students who already know what they're doing, and to me, that totally defeats the purpose of "teaching". I'm not that great at math anyway & I would have liked to have learned something about it! I probably made like a 2 on the math part of the ACT. Gawd, I could ramble on forever about my school, but I'm tired & I forgot the rest of what I was gonna say (lack of education) LOL
Fleet 11-15-2002, 10:00 PM Having been out of school for a little over 20 years, allow me to post a few comments.
In general, here are one pro- and anti-school points.
Anti- I think too much fuss is made over grades. Especially when job-hunting. It's nice a have a "A" or "B" average, but in many jobs it makes little difference. I was a "C" student, but on the several jobs I've had, I performed just as well as "A" and "B" students. Of two or three people applying for a job, some companies will hire the better student, even if the one with the lower GPA may be a better worker. On the other hand, if someone is a superior student and has the means (money) to go to college, by all means do it.
Pro- I would say the two things that I benefited from school would be reading/english and math. Reading ability comes in handy in day-to-day life. Also, while we were doing inventory at work, someone forgot to make deductions on calculations. It was the weight of 30-gallons drums of paint we use- he forgot to dedect the weight of the empty can from the total weight. I think it was 15 pounds. So, we had to subtract 15 from the incorrect total, for instance, 233 minus 15. Well, I was tired of using a calculator all that morning, so I did it with my head. Some people were impressed- they had to use calculators. One person called me a "human computer." So, I did not think so at the time (in school) but those math classes came in handy.
Here's a short list of what I did and did not like about school...
Liked
1. Quite a few days off (2 weeks for Christmas, 1 week for Easter, etc.)
2. Less hours at school than at work. Also, no such thing as "overtime"
3. Phys. Ed. I wish where I work they would give us an hour to go outside and play (and it counts as part of the required full-day)
4. Lunch break
Did not like
1. No pay
2. Homework
3. Some boring classes (especially history)
4. Some of the teachers
5. No car/could not drive to school (I got my driver's license about 40 days after I graduated from high school)
Jersey Girl 11-16-2002, 12:53 AM Most of my teachers are okay when it comes to assigning homework. Most of them look only for right answers, and not for effort... My chem teacher is a little strange though. He has a PhD in chem, so he knows what he's talking about, but it's like he's on a different wavelength than the rest of the school.
I have a major problem with the guidance department at my school. They handle which classes you are put into, and they recently gave us a lecture on how "too many people are in IB classes". It doesn't make much sense becuase they encourage you to take challenging courses. They basically encouraged those struggling to switch down. So then people who are struggling with a class are allowed to switch within a month of the start of school. However, the guidance department completely filled the "advanced" classes (next step down from IB) and so everyone struggling with an IB course is forced to take it for the rest of the year SOLEY because they overbooked classes to begin with.
Another thing that pisses me off with my guidance department... We have non-ranked GPA, which just means that your GPA is an average of your grades, no matter if you're taking IB or remidal courses. We also have class rank, which is like a weighted GPA, becuase the difficulty of the courses you are taking are worked into your rank. The difficulty plays a huge role in the averaging of your rank, and it basically encourages you to move up in a class that you do well in. However, the guidance department is set on changing the system so there is a non-ranked GPA, AND non ranked Class rank. I believe that would encourage students to take easier classes, and therefore get better grades than if they were being challenged...
GRR...anyway, enough ranting for tonite...
