He talked about this incident on Late Night with David Letterman a few months after it happened.

I'm going with he thought it was fake. Someone threw it on stage. He thought it was a rubber toy bat. Apparently bats taste like chicken.

Ozzy also talks about the accident that killed guitarist Randy Rhoads.
