View Full Version : Producer explains in summer of 1981 why a new roommate was needed for season 6
TVFactFan 03-15-2025, 11:25 PM I dont recall hearing the reason for adding a new roommate for season 6 on THS and stumbled across this article. He said a new face brings in new storylines for a new season and that's why a new roommate was added to the show. For years I always wondered why another roommate was needed if Cindy had been there so long. lol
BestTVever 03-16-2025, 01:07 PM That is the P.R. story. Harrison and the other cast stated the producers were concerned about the decline in ratings and wanted to sex up the show more and thought Harrison was too young for those scripts. They brought in an older woman and the ratings went up with a return to more sexualized scripts.
I thought Harrison did a great job considering the huge shoes she was trying to fill. The clumsy roommate would have worn thin though after season 5 or 6.
I think this article was trying to blunt the confusion of why Threes Company was getting yet another blonde roommate.

It was just something they didnt mention on THS since the main reason for it was the suzanne somers contract dispute. So I never knew the reasoning behind adding Priscilla Barnes to the show.
The ‘bringing in an older person for more sex stories’ anecdote is also told by Jenilee Harrison in Chris Mann’s book.

Do you know what page it mentions why cindy was never mentioned again after the wig Out episode:lol::lol::lol:
It does mention in that article they going to send her off to college but her last screen appearance was so odd

I see mentions of no more Cindy on pages 209 and 226. I don’t see anything about real life why she left. Maybe it’s in there somewhere, but I don’t see it.

BestTVever 03-17-2025, 08:23 AM Its interesting to read what Joyce thought about the "Janet Wigs Out" script. It was ridiculous for a character to change so much in a show. Even worse was Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow.
The wheels were coming off but as long as ratings were good no one cared (except the actors).
Janet and Teri were very grounded characters. To turn them into superficial, sex crazed women for one show was beyond stupid.

In regards to Wig Out, Cindy was too goofy to realize that Janet was on a date and was going to actually sit with them:lol:

That was the least of it. The way Janet was acting because she wore a blonde wig was insane. But it was out done but Terri's trance over Jack because of a plastic mustache. Jack tries to be mean and abusive towards her at the Beagle to get her to fall out of love with him and its still was not working.

I can kind of see why Janet was acting that way. Before she wore the blonde wig she wasnt getting the attention she wanted from men and when she did everything changed. Like in my case, if I start wearing a beard and notice women falling all over me Im going to stick to what's working:lol::lol::lol::lol:
DEH55 03-22-2025, 12:24 PM i was never a fan of the Cindy character but i always thought it was too bad that Cindy just vanishes and is never mentioned again after she walks out of the Beagle. but the producers of the show never cared about things like that. another problem was that Harrison was just not that good a actress. you could see that from watching the show.
DEH55 03-22-2025, 12:26 PM I always thought it was a bit insulting to her to still have her in the opening credits but now she was in the background with Larry and Furley while Jack is upfront with Janet and now Terri. she was old news and not as important anymore. lol
DEH55 03-22-2025, 12:28 PM and i always thought it looked weird that Jack , Larry and the girls were even hanging out with their old Landlord Mr.Furley at the zoo etc. their group of friends were lacking. Mr.Furley was probably one of the most pathetic characters on a tv show. He had no real friends, he dressed really badly, had a bad toupee, no luck with women, he was wimpy, and on top of it he was a homophobe.
Dude111 03-22-2025, 01:18 PM That show was the BEST in the 70s :)

Yes that was evident in most of the eps
The "Come and Knock on My Door" book seems like a good read.
it kinda works that Cindy would be offended by Janet's behavior that she possibly wouldn't come around again, but I'd liker to think Janet would have apologized to her after. Unlike the Lana situation- she's never seen again after throwing a drink in jack's face, calling him a beast and telling him to stay away from her. The way it was portrayed, Jack would have left that alone and not contacted Lana.

It was nothing for Janet to apologize for since it was clear she was on a date. Cindy didnt have any social skills and it was confirmed when was going to actually sit with them. Thats like me as a guy and I see one of my guy friends at a sports bar with girl. Now I will speak but I am not going to join them that would be odd. And since Cindy was in college at UCLA why she still bringing her a$$ to the apt? I would have thought she would have met some friends on campus:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:
BuffaloBill 04-11-2025, 02:39 AM My only thought about Cindy coming often by the apartment is her line in Baby Makes Four, were she tells Jack and Janet they are the best friends anyone can have. Which leads into the last ever call in and appearance for Chrissy.
BestTVever 04-11-2025, 06:43 AM I liked Cindy but I found her appearances annoying in season 6 because you can clearly see the producers felt bad for her for cutting her out and were throwing her a few bones to still appear on the show. She comes in makes and egg in the kitchen and then goes back to college. We get a few jokes and she's gone. She invites the kids to her aunt's farm and disappears and sleeps in the house. She makes a kite in the living room that Jack destroys and never seen again in the episode. The only episode in season 6 where she had a credible role was when they hired her for a maid. Jack was the focus of that script though. Lastly she introduces Janet and her new wig and then tells her she has a nice wist watch and leaves for good.
Sort of reminds me of the kid that was brought in on Family Ties. He would say a few cute lines at the beginning of the show, walk out of the room and we don't see him again till the end. Its all fluff. And I find it annoying
Dianne3 04-11-2025, 03:39 PM I always thought thought that the reason Cindy was kept around was insurance in case the viewers didn't take to Terri.
I saw Jennilee Harrison on an episode on the Love Boat and I considered her to be hot, which on TC I never saw Cindy as hot.
I think this Love Boat episode was on at the same time as season 6 of TC. Her scenes were with Partick Duffy, who we know was a very big name at that time.
With Cindy it did make sense why she would be living with Jack & Janet. With Terri, it didn't since obviously as a nurse, Terri could afford her own place.

She was a LA Rams cheerleader so she definitely was hot. I think they toned down her hotness and tried to make her an all American girl on TC.

Yes that was a pointless a$$ appearance. She is cooking and then she leaves in 2 mins
