I never really noticed the door there, but I'll look for it when I watch the BB .;)

Could be a linen closet? Or the door to the attic?

I've never noticed a door there either.

One scene I remember involving the attic entrance is the one where the boys and girls kept pranking each other (before finally going on to Alice), and no shot of the door leading to the attic stairs shows it being near the main stairway.

I am curious now because even though I dont remember seeing a door at the top of the stairs I would not dispute it because the house does change with doors here and there. The center bathroom door comes and goes. The parent's bedroom glass sliding doors are shown in one episode and then disappear. It makes for good fun to notice and point out these little quirks.
Barry Williams has a theory why so many changes happened in the house over the years. During the off season the set was used by other shows where the set was dismantled in part. When the Bradys would return the set was never put back together the same way again. The brick BBQ grill changes locations often too and sometimes disappears. Barry and Chris love to talk about the tree in the back yard. In season 1 it was in the same place. The tree would move to a different spot, disappear and reappear again in a different spot.

This is it! I know I've always pushed that the house HAD to have a guest room, Aunt Jenny had to sleep someplace, and I'm not thinking she was CRAMMED into the girls' room into a SINGLE-sized bed, and the grandparents had to sleep some place when Marsha impromptu invited them over. So I'm wondering if that door could have been a small guest bedroom.... It's not the linen closet, because that is further back, nor is it the attic door because it, too, is further down the hall

It appears the door opens to the INSIDE, so likely it's a ROOM of some sort and not a closet, as closet doors usually open to the outside

Thanks for posting. Now its our job to look at every episode to see if it comes and goes or was mostly there for episodes. Or when did it appear?

Perhaps its another door to the attic because logically around that corner would be the attic door to the left. It also could be another linen closet that we never saw before.
Although all of this is a bit crazy because its not a real house and a stage. Its almost like the discussion is there a room under the stairs.

My theory is that door and light switch was put there to make the second floor look authentic. We know that is just a staircase on a stage with nothing at the top. The bedrooms were actually outside the front door. Having a door and lights witch does make it look like a real staircase and a real house.

Linen closet.

TheLittleFaerie

Linen closet.

The reason I decided against that was, their linen closet was shown and it's further down the hall, PLUS this door seems to open to the INSIDE, indicating it's more than likely a room of some sort, not a closet, as closets usually open to the outside

Storage closet?
Perhaps the width of the parents bathroom on the other side. Adjacent to the parents wardrobe closet.
That's where they kept their Christmas decorations.

The door at the top of the stairs was never not there. Same for the door in the Jack and Jill bathroom.

The patio door in the parents bedroom is suggested and only ever seen in one close up. The only other time we see the fourth wall with the window is in Going, Going Steady.

Amending my previous post, I agree--that opening was always there--I just never knew there was a door. It stands to reason the landing has to lead somewhere--I never thought about it, but it makes sense it's to the hall.

There is a TV Sets book, an old paperback with drawings. It has plans drawn by some guy with time on his hands, and he shows an opening to the hall. He has drawings of many sitcoms houses.

One episode where it's probably got a pretty good view is the one where Peter's thrown ball from upstairs breaks Carol's vase.

That is not true about the bathroom. Its discussed by Barry and Chris on the Real Brady Bros podcast. That center bathroom door comes and goes. Watch and you will see.
Same with the tree in the backyard. Its there the first season, then moves, disappears and reappears again. The BBQ grill also disappears in episodes and reappears in other episodes.

They are wrong. They often get things wrong. I get things wrong. But not on this. The door is always there. Give me an episode and the time on the dvd to look? There might be times it looks like it is not there, but that is because of the framing of the shot. Give me an episode title and time where we see the full rear wall of the bathroom where we see the cupboards to the left and the bath to the right but no door in the middle and I'll eat my bellbottomed trousers. :D

You've never picked up that the landing at the top of the stairs leads to the hall?? That table at the top right of the stairs is always nicely matched up with the upstairs hallway scenes as they move the table and picture frame to that part of the set.

Watch Clubhouse Is Not A Home at 9m30s, Confessions at 2m and Room At The Top at 18m35s for the best examples. Times from the USA dvds.

I guess I never noticed that there was a door at that opening leading to the hall. It appears to be closed in the picture above.

It's obvious to me that it goes to the hall. I don't get the discussion about it leading to the attic or other spaces.

Well since we don't know for sure......

I've thinking for a while about writing a self-insert, fan-fic of the Brady Bunch where I put MYSELF in as a character.... I used to want to be adopted by the Bradys when I was a kid, so maybe in my story that "mystery door" will be MY little room :)

I think I would put my character in a hypothetical season 6, as an eccentric cousin who is chronic daydreamer with self esteem issues, always overlooked by my TRUE family, who can also be a spitfire at times

Since my character, as in real life, will be a little "disconnected" and loopy at times, I can already imagine a scenario where I get up, not looking at where I'm going and take a plunge down the stairs LOL

That would be interesting. There is already at least one fan fic in that section where there are scripts at least thru season 7.

This will become my new obsession and focus in life :)
Maybe it sticks out more when its open and that brings it to our attention that there was a door there. For example, when Alice opens the door and picks up the towel in The Great Earing Caper.
On another note. The explanation of how Bobby changes beds was revealed on a recent episode of the Brady Bros. In the episode where Bobby falls from the tree, he is laying in Greg's bed. Then when Greg moved to the attic, Peter took Greg's side of the room. But in the episode where Peter and Bobby are fighting, Peter is back on Bobby's side.
Barry revealed that the change was all for the camera. They needed to film from a certain angle.
I think we have discussed this before but the girl's desk on a few episodes is on the other side of the bathroom door in a few episodes. But now I need to find a shot from the bathroom with no center door.
Its funny because of all the scenes where they are banging on their bedroom sliding bathroom door, how come none of the kids went to the hall

It was probably filmed next door but the Brady Bunch had left the air by then. The Brady kids talk about going next door at Paramount and watch Sid and Marty Kroft film H.R. Puff N Stuff all the time. This connection brought them together again for the Variety Hour Show. So in some weird way, it was not too far off ;)

Hmmm, there is a small door at the top of the stairs leading who knows where as we never see it open during the original run of the show. On the right of the landing is an opening that takes you down the hall to the left. The door is just there to suggest rooms really I think. It is odd that it was never used.

Same for the opening behind the back of the stairs which I think we see characters use about 2-3 times only. Normally sets have lots of doors so that people can exit scenes quickly etc. Shows generally don't give too much though to how they would look on floor plans. Just look at the The Golden Girls floor plans; the corridor leads to at least 3 bedrooms: one on the left which would be where the garden is and one on the right which would be meshing with the kitchen and visible from the kitchen window.

This was down to a lazy director. Or perhaps they couldn't find the fourth wall. In fact, in this episode, it suited them more to have Bobby in the bed near the bathroom so they could do the bathroom/toilet gag. They never do a shot from the corner bed looking over to the bathroom and bed.

I think the Doctor episode from season one gives us an angle taken from Peter's POV as he sits in bed and we can see the bathroom and fourth wall in the background.

I think an issue with people not seeing the door is that the wall is painted blue. The door frame is painted blue. And the back of the door is also blue. It's like they didn't want to draw attention to it. STrange IMO.

And, from episode 19, aka Top Secret, we get a shower nozzle and a shower curtain in the bathroom with only a few episodes to go. I wonder if another show used the bathroom set and added that and they never took it off. Or they wrote a scene requiring a shower nozzle to be used but they never filmed or aired it.

Someone made a floorplan of the Golden Girls' home and it was CRAZY!!!!! Rose's room was HUGE and it was to the left, it would totally occupy the ENTIRE lanai porch area. and there's no way Blanche's room could work being at the end of the hall.

In this floorplan of Famous TV Homes, they MADE it work, but there could be NO usable window in the living room nor the kitchen. In this floorplan, the extended Rose's room further back and made the lanai be a "boxed in" area with Rose's room sealing it in. They made Blanche's room work by it having a little walk way that would extend past Rose's room. Sophia's room would run about 4 feet along the kitchen window, and that 4 feet was a walk way into the back door, from the garage which would be on the OPPOSITE side of the house.

Totally messed up way to build a house!

Also there may be a connection from the hallway to the "backporch" area that leads into the kitchen, sometimes from the living room you can see the kitchen area from the hall, I dunno if that was just a set malfunction or there was supposed to be a connection.... I do remember a couple of occasions when 2 or more of the girls would exit the set, they would walk into the hallway and turn RIGHT, so in that case it makes sense there'd be a connection to the kitchen, or else they would all being going into Sophia's room lol BUT if there was a connection, you'd think the girls would use it more often when they get up at night to get a snack instead of walking all the way around through the living room

When I was little I was always an observant kid, and would always notice the flaws lol Like on Sanford and Son, sometimes Lamont's room is "the first door on the right" and other times the bathroom is, then once the bathroom was "to the left" lol I asked my mom why the rooms always changed, and she was like, "Oh hun, you're not supposed to notice that! lol

I think you're talking about the "mystery door" behind the staircase. No one really knows, I think once or twice we see a character exit from that area. I know folks have speculated there is a bathroom or a 'powder room' back there, and there is most certainly a connection to the laundry room, as once tiger ran toward the kitchen area and a few seconds later emerged from that door
