MISST3 12-04-2016, 06:56 PM Post a trivia fact about anything! TJ 09-02-2024, 12:45 PM Part 1 - https://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/showthread.php?t=355263 I always thought Hawaii grew the most pineapples, but that's not the case. They really only grow enough for the tourists. The top pineapple producing countries are Indonesia, Philippines, and Costa Rica. opus 09-02-2024, 12:58 PM THANKS MA for starting this thread ... https://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/showpost.php?p=6311404&postcount=1000 Did you know... it wasn't MA who started the original thread? Dude111 09-03-2024, 12:24 AM Please continue in Part 2.I love ya so much Todd!! "Did you know" guys how much I love Todd?? He's one of my best friends ;) Foggy 09-08-2024, 12:01 PM Can you imagine a bird no larger than your thumb? Needless to say, this teeny chap is the smallest bird in the world. He is the bee hummingbird, and he weighs less than a U.S. penny. Flapping its wings 80 times a second—almost 5,000 beats per minute—it darts from bush to vine, feasting on flowers and insects to fuel its hyperactivity. In fact, the hungry little fella eats half of its body weight in food every day and is able to visit 1,500 flowers a day to quench its thirst. Sugar-rich flower water gives vital energy, and insects provide protein. Capable of flying for up to 20 hours without a break, they certainly need the calories. During a courtship sortie, their wing beats increase up to 200 times per second, the same as the ruby-throated hummingbird; that’s faster than all other birds on the planet. Often mistaken for large bumblebees, they weigh less than 0.07 ounces. Penny Lane 09-10-2024, 11:09 AM Did you know- that bobcats are often confused for large tabbies!? (It's true. Please don't make this mistake.) Bobcats are one of the most widely spread and adaptive hunters in North America. They prowl forests, deserts, swamplands, and suburban backyards at twilight in search of food, which is basically any small mammal or bird. If you spot one, the iconic bobbed tail should tip you off that this is no domestic cat. icecream 09-21-2024, 03:38 AM Weird Al Yankovic turned down a 5 million dollar beer endorsement deal. Foggy 10-13-2024, 09:38 PM Ice pops were invented by an 11-year-old by accident: In 1905, an 11-year-old boy named Frank Epperson left soda powder and water outside overnight with its wooden stirrer still in the cup. The mixture had frozen in the chilly nighttime weather, and so the Epsicle was born Dude111 10-14-2024, 12:35 PM Wow thats cool!! Foggy 10-14-2024, 05:46 PM Supermarket apples can be a year old These weird facts might have you changing the way you eat. Those fresh apples aren’t all that fresh, per say. They’re usually picked between August and November, covered in wax, hot-air dried, and sent into cold storage. After six to twelve months, they finally land on your grocery store shelves. Dude111 10-15-2024, 01:32 AM I hope that doesnt happen very often!! D-Dey 11-11-2024, 12:13 PM Did you know that as much as some might like to take pride in this, the first on-screen interracial kiss was not between William Shatner and Nichelle Nichols in the "Star Trek" episode "Plato's Stepchildren." It was between Rita Tushingham and Paul Danquah in the 1961 British Kitchen Sink Drama "A Taste of Honey." https://www.art.com/products/p16258237360-sa-i6976443/a-taste-of-honey-paul-danquah-rita-tushingham-1961.htm JamesG 11-14-2024, 02:26 AM The MTA uses vintage 1930s R1-9 train cars every holiday season between Thanksgiving and New Years. They usually run along the F Line in Manhattan and on the A,C,D Lines departing from 125th St. on the weekends. These cars were discontinued from regular service around 1977. Did you know that the color scheme on the New York Mets' uniforms was supposed to combine the Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Giants? Did you know that Robert Moses offered to build a new stadium for the Brooklyn Dodgers in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park? That flies in the face of the prevailing myth that Moses pushed the Dodgers out of NYC. But in 1980 he was an unknown actor who auditioned for Ordinary People and lost out to Timothy Hutton, future star of Leverage. Director Robert Redford did not like Michael's audition and flossed his teeth during it. Timothy won a best supporting actor Oscar for Ordinary People playing the son of Mary Tyler Moore and Donald Sutherland. A unique feature they have are the ceiling fans. I did not know that. I rarely take the subway now, but I remember riding in those old cars occasionally in my childhood. At any given time, the subways had different train models in the system at the same time, so you never knew which type of train that you would get. Also, because the subways originally started out as three different private subways systems not run by the city, not all train models can run on every line. The old trains with the ceiling fans were referred to by everyone as 'cattle cars', and even though they had no air conditioning, they were much cooler in the summer than the cars that replaced them, which had horrible air conditioning. Those ceiling fans were quite effective. Nothing could save you on the underground platforms though, as the 7th Avenue Times Square station would easily surpass 100 degrees in the summer. A discontinued subway car I remember from when I was younger are the Redbirds. These were officially discontinued around 2003 and the cars were then scattered underwater around the Atlantic Ocean to create artificial reefs. Some other cars were sent to be displayed at museums. The MTA tokens were also officially discontinued around this time. I remember using them a handful of times when I took the bus to high school when my student-issued MetroCard wasn't available. The tokens were accepted on the busses a little bit longer than the subways. I believe they were $1.75 when they were discontinued. I'm sure you know, but the MTA wants to phase out the MetroCard for the OMNY system. I'm seeing more subway stations installing the OMNY machines, though they are not activated yet. I believe only the IRT used those red trains. When I took the subway regularly, I used the IND. I probably used tokens more times in my life than Metrocards, although it might be close. I remember when I was very young, buses took coins for fares and the bus driver even made change for you. That was stopped when bus drivers began being robbed. I've seen the OMNY turnstiles but don't know how they work, nor do I have any interest in 'signing up'. I think congestion pricing is a disgrace. NYC now loses between $500 million and $1 billion a year by allowing people to sneak onto the trains and buses without paying, yet drivers in the outer boroughs - who don't use the subways - will have to pay to drive into Manhattan to keep the subways running. What makes you think people in the outer boroughs don't take the subways? The 7 train and J and Z trains have been stuffed more times than I can remember. I also think the transition from MetroCards to OMNY is causing a lot of the increase in skipping fares. OMNY tries to rely on cell phone transactions, and if you can't rely on your phone, you can't pay. And yes, I do know that there are OMNY cards. BTW, I've actually collected old subway tokens. Dude111 11-22-2024, 11:05 AM Did you know 1+1 does not equal 3?? JamesG 11-23-2024, 04:25 AM I also think the transition from MetroCards to OMNY is causing a lot of the increase in skipping fares. OMNY tries to rely on cell phone transactions, and if you can't rely on your phone, you can't pay. And yes, I do know that there are OMNY cards. I remember from when I was younger that the only thing separating the driver from the riders was a metal pole. Now they are closed off and the drivers rarely seem to leave the wheel. The exception is when they have to help a wheelchair user strap themselves in. I remember a few times that the driver pulled over and stopped the bus until the few passengers who boarded through the back either exited or paid the fare. Now they do not want the confrontations and just rather allow people on. The Express Bus doesn't have any barriers between the driver and riders. Now they do not want the confrontations and just rather allow people on. I've been in that situation. I didn't have my MetroCard and I found out I was a dollar short paying for the bus fare, and the driver just let me stay. I offered to break up a $5 bill with some of the other riders and pay the rest of the fare, but nobody bothered. Getting it back to the point with general knowledge trivia... Identical twin sisters Brittany and Briana, 38, married identical twin brothers Josh and Jeremy in 2017 after meeting at the Twins Day Festival. After their "quaternary marriage," a term used to describe identical twins marrying identical twins, both couples gave birth to children at the same time in 2021 who are considered quaternary multiples, meaning they are full genetic siblings from identical twin parents. Although technically cousins, the boys are genetically brothers. Both families live together in the same house in Virginia. JamesG 07-27-2025, 12:01 AM Disney's The Haunted Mansion was originally conceived as a walkthrough attraction where a tour guide, butler, takes guests through the decrepit house. The original idea also tied in with the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction. The story was that a retired sea captain, who was secretly a former pirate, built a luxurious mansion for his much younger wife and filled it with many treasures; the loot from his pirate activities. Word began to spread around the town of the sea captain's true identity and his wife confronted him about it. He strangled her in a fit of rage and eventually hung himself in the house from guilt. The house then fell into disrepair in the decades after as nobody wanted anything to do with it. Guests would encounter the ghost of the wife, in her bridal gown, who would warn them about her husband's evil presence in the house. The attraction was retooled as this idea was considered "too dark" and they decided to make it a dark ride with spooky elements and not downright frightening. Walt Disney also did not want a house that looked abandoned in the park. There are some concepts from the original idea that made it to the current attraction: - the ghost host is shown to have hung himself at the beginning of the ride - a portrait of a ghost ship can be seen in the art gallery - there is a ghost bride, but the story is different JamesG 07-29-2025, 03:03 AM Disney's Animal Kingdom was originally going to have a section called "Beastly Kingdom" which was to be devoted to mythological animals such as dragons and unicorns. It was never completed due to budget constraints and the spot where it was supposed to be is now where Pandora: The World of Avatar is. It felt like 100 degrees in Paris and my friend went to a restaurant thinking it would be cooler inside, but no. - Acetaminophen (Tylenol) is only sold in pharmacies. While a prescription is not required, it is up to the pharmacists' discretion to sell it. biffbronson 08-01-2025, 05:12 AM That's pretty surprising about Tylenol in France; in the U.S. even "extra strength" is an over-the-counter product. Security footage showed the big cat prying open freezers, sampling every flavor — vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, even mint chip — before curling up on the floor and falling asleep, whiskers dusted with frosting. When officers arrived, they found him peacefully napping. “He looked like he had a sugar hangover,” one rescuer joked. Experts later explained that big cats can detect fatty lipids like humans sense sugar — to them, dairy is irresistible. The shop owner just laughed: “As long as someone’s paying for him, I hope he comes back. The process begins by reprogramming fat cells into stem cells. These cells are then used to 3D-print a heart containing chambers, blood vessels, and cardiac muscle — all biologically matched to the patient. Unlike previous lab-grown tissues, this heart contracts in a coordinated way. Because it’s made entirely from the patient’s own cells, the risk of immune rejection is dramatically reduced — potentially eliminating the need for lifelong immunosuppressive drugs. The heart is currently small and not yet transplant-ready. But experts view it as proof of concept — a critical step toward solving global organ shortages and personalizing transplant medicine.
