And ironically, for just Seasons 1 (https://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/32461/newhart-the-complete-first-season/) and 2 (http://carstairsconsiders.blogspot.com/2014/03/tv-on-dvd-review-newhart-season-2.html), which if I have my facts straight, are generally regarded (reddit.com/r/television/comments/165krp3/do_most_characters_ever_evolve/) by viewers (https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/YMMV/Newhart) as the weakest seasons (i.e. the "Kirk seasons (https://www.reddit.com/r/sitcoms/comments/193rhub/newhart_early_cast_differences/)").

This is sad that the show and Bob himself never won a single award. He maybe gone, but he'll always be remembered. The show itself was overshadowed by Cheers.

I think that's partly the fault of the show - Stephanie and Michael were a watered-down copy of Sam and Diane.
I think it didn't get nominations after the first couple years because Newhart didn't want to go along with the steady creep of soap opera into sitcoms. Even slap-sticky Night Court managed to inject maudlin subplots into many episodes, but Newhart didn't go along with that.

Seasons 1 and 2 were solid seasons. They had good writing and fun stories, and less stupid stuff from the later seasons. (While I'm pointing this out as a compliment for the early seasons, I still think the stupid stuff from later years was mostly funny but in a different way.)
Kirk was a consistently well-written and funny character IMO.
