As I look over these boards, I notice a lot of people here who are going to doctors and psychiatrists and counsellors, or who have gone to one. Anyone interested in talking about it?

Okay. I've just opened up a whole can of worms....

I've gone to a couple over the years.:(

physchiatrist (sp) ya I went to one but I don't anymore, it was only so I got medicine when I had OCD and they told me how to help cure it. OCD is Obsessive Compulsive Disorder...

Yeah I've been to one. I have for almost a year now because I'm afraid of people and depressed. Its not helping or anything. So er yeah

yeah, I've been to therapy for severe depression and anxiety, it helped a lot, I shudder to think what would have happened if I hadn't accepted the fact that I needed help. I don't go anymore, and I'm doing ok, but I kind of miss it, it was a good release for me. I'll probably go back soon, just as a precautionary measure.

my mom is forcing me to go to see a physcharist because I worry to much and am depressed...this should be fun

No, but I really need to. A few months ago, I told my mom that I needed help. She said that I had to stop feeling so down. I never really thought about suicide or anything. I've had members of my family do that, and it really tears up the whole family. It's like the person never existed or something. That kind of makes me sick in a way. The person is worth remembering, even if the person committed suicide.

Just my 2 cents.

I'm autistic and have ADHD so I have had my fair share of counseling...but things are a lot better now.

Oh yes. Big can of worms.

And no, I don't wanna share my visits with them (shrinks) but I'll just say that I've see oh... *thinks* about 5 or 6 different ones over the course of the past 2 1/2 years.

Councelors? Ah geez, I prolly saw my guidance councelor almost everyoner day throught middle school.

I've seen way too many people who can "help" me. *sighs*

I've gone to counseling off and on. I went in 6th grade, 7th and 8th grade. Then when I got out of high school, I've also done group counseling. I went to a pyschiatrists for a few evaluations and never had to go back. I used to get picked on a lot by the kids in school because of the way I looked. So, I went to the counselor to talk about it. That helped me until we moved to a better neighborhood and things got better. My parents thought it would be a good idea for me to go back into after I graduated because I had no desire to work and I was depressed. So I went, got better and haven't been back since.

I once went to a phsychologist when I was in 6th or 7th grade. I have always been a very quiet kid in school, not exactly shy, but just more quiet than other kids. Well, because everyone else in my class were sort of loud mouths that made me stick out and the teachers told my parents to take me to a counsellor. Every counsellor I saw which may have been I think 2 or 3 all said I was just a normal kid. What the worst thing about it was that I felt forced to go to a counsellor, and I think it should just be upto the person who is going to a counsellor to decide whether they want to go to one or not. I could see having to go to a counsellor for personal issues in life such as feelings of suicide or something like that, but I was always a happy kid and have never been depressed to the point of wanting to end my life. Anyway, since I always felt forced to go to phsycologists, I grew up hating them, so I've never willingly seeked help (not that I need any) from phsycologists since. And, anyway, unless a person is going through something in their life that is very tragic, like a death of a very close person in their life, I don't think they need counselling.

My dad made us do a "family counceling" secession after my mom killed herself, I think he lasted a week before he called the councelor a "damn money stealing crock." I havent' been back since.. i've been told I need to, but I have no immediate plans... cost too much money to "talk" to those people.

I normally don't like talking about it, but since I see all of these people who feel alright about it, I guess I can too. Back in highschool, I think 11th Grade was when I started seeing a counselor. My first one did nothing, and I switched. My second one was wonderful - I was diagnosed with clinical depression for two years, and had to see a third counselor during my freshman year of college, but by then I was pretty much over it. I'm a big believer in counseling, I know it helped me.

I've been going to psychiatrists for over half of my life. When I was 11 I was diagnosed as having chronic depression and OCD. I've had to be on medicine ever since.

My 8th grade teacher thought I needed to see one because she thought I was a disruptive, unruly child. She was just an old stupid hag. My Physchiatrist just said I had a personal conflict with the teacher & that was causing my bad behavior. After 8th grade I went on to high school & was fine. Never seeing the physchiatrist again all is well. I hate my 8th grade teacher.
Luckly I never see her anymore. Except if I run into her.

I went to one when I was about 10 to 12. I think my mother just thought I had this goofy imagination and didn't fit in with other kids, too hyper or something. I then did it again when I was about 13 for a while, nothing helped--I basically think it was because my mother didn't accept me for being a goofy kid...Like who isn't at that age... I went back in 1997 when people at my church were concerned that I had personal issues that seemed a little more than this one weekly 12-step group could help me with...so for a couple of years I went to one and talked about my social isolation and feeling a little far behind most people in their position in life. The doctor said pretty much all I had to do was do SOMETHING, ANYTHING to get out of my doldrums...(but never really offering advice on how to do it... ) It was basically more pep talk and all, but I think the cause of a lot of my problems stemmed from my mother's constant robbing me of my self-confidence and making me feel like
my desire to become a successful writer, artist, musician, etc., was not practical and all that, so I felt crippled and frustrated. So
what later happened was that I didn't go back after being so far behind in paying for my sessions that I had my wages garnished for a while......Quite an irony, I get my wages garnished for not being able to pay for my sessions. And why was I going to a psychiatrist in the first place? The fact that I had a hard time finding a more decent job and being more productive in my life....
I was being punished for trying to find a solution to my low-wage predicament... Among other things...

.....And, they are pretty scary. Especially when you go to one for the first time. After about the third visit or so, it's not that bad cause you get to know them.

But I can see where you are getting at...I don't exactly appreciate spilling my guts out to someone...

I probably should go'n see a psychiatrist or something. I've been needing to talk to someone like that ever since I was about 14. Truth be told, I'm kinda scared to go. I could just see 'em with a big red pen, writing CRAZY on my file, locking me up and throwing away the key.
I'm not insane but I know I'm not really all that well adjusted either - I don't need to pay some quack 50 quid an hour to tell me what I already know.
I have difficulty opening up to people. I don't think I could tell someone loads of personal stuff about me while they're sitting right there in front of me. That's why I keep so much stuff to myself - I couldn't bear the looks on people's faces when I basically admit to them that I'm messed up.
That's why I've never actually told any of my friends or family members that I'm gay. I couldn't bear to see the look of disappointment on their faces.

I'm shutting up now, before I really depress myself and everyone else reading this.........

it would suck for me if i were gay. seriously. my parents are so homophobic. Im also not allowed to date black people because inter racial relationships are "disgusting". my mom says that anyway. my dad at least understands me. he never says that stuff. well, no more than normal rich white people... but at least hes accepting to everyone. i like him better sometimes.. it kinda bugs me because my fathers hispanic and my mother once told me she prayed everyday that I'd be white. i mean she has nothing against me being friends with someone black... but god forbd i date them. and she says gay people are "sick and disturbed"... I personally like hanging out with gay people better. they are nicer, least around here. my parents are also hypocritical and dumb. I mean they expect me to do GREAT academically... and my dads a dropout and my mom didn't get her hs diploma until 6 yrs after she finished the 12th grade because she refused summer school. i mean wanting better 4 ur kids is one thing, but they expect too much. they also openly admit they think im a freak and everything i do is wrong.

sometimes... i cant stand her.

its mostly my mom. but i rarely see my dad (works 18 hours a day, goes to work before i wake up, gets home bout an hour before i sleep) so my mian influence is my mom, and her influence sucks. my life is so WEIRD. my parents love me alot and give me everything i want but in return i have to like... be perfect, straight, and white. She yelled at me for wearign black baggy pants because they were "nigg'er" pants. my dad just laffed and said they were ok. but agreed black guys wore em. but eh didnt like. yell.

I have seen a counselor and Psychiastrist but in my opinion they cant help you.....

They dont know whats really going on in your life........

Years ago I saw this 1 that took me out to eat... We talked about everything.. He was more than a friend than anything.

Sasly it seemed in 2020 he didnt wanna see me anymore....... (I hadnt seen him really too much for years before then)

He tried to tell me he wasnt in my state anymore which I thought was a lie........

Ah well....... I dont want to talk to anyone...... No one can help me and they just try to force thier "normalcy" on me which I dont like.... I am my own person!!

I go when I can. I see this post was made in 2002, close to when I started going back in 2001, the man was in his 50s then, and I just started going back to the same one, he's like 80s now
