View Full Version : I am permanently boycotting the Emmy Awards from this day forth
Attmay 09-23-2002, 12:18 AM The fact that the worst television program in all of history can get an award for "Outstanding Comedy Series" makes me want to destroy things. If someone out there is looking for a professional Friends hater, I'm yours.
This poorly-written, unfunny, irritating show is worthy of the same award given to "I Love Lucy," "The Dick Van Dyke Show," "All in the Family," "M*A*S*H," "The Mary Tyler Moore Show," "Cheers," "The Cosby Show," and "The Golden Girls?" I'd have given it to My Mother the Car before I gave it to this show. To think of the many true classics that Emmy passed over.
Well, all bets are off on the future of this country's popular culture.
¤I Love Clay Aiken¤ 09-23-2002, 12:32 AM OMG I know!!! Who cares if its their last season!! Im actually looking forward to it! I was also happy the Sopranos didnt make the deadline!! Not that I HATE these shows (although I NEVER watch them) its so sickening how much awards they get!! There are more shows than 6 Feet Under, West Wing and Friends! On a lighter note, my boy Conan did a SUPERB job.:loveya:
DarleneIllyria 09-23-2002, 01:00 AM lol- I'm another 'Friends' hater. My parents love this show. I still can't understand that one.
I was flipping through the channels and saw a commericial for Friends next and last season (hopefully) and I could've cried from joy.
I'm going to say this, but I'm sure I'll have some people disagree with me. Friends is gonna take it to a whole new level for typecasting. None of the actors or actresses did that many memorable movies, did they? People just might forget Adam West and Burt Ward for most typecast actors, because I think some of the "Friends" are going to be typecast beyond belief. jmo

Ick, seriously, lol I SO agree. Last season? Ive been waiting since 1999 for this thing to end lol. Friends haters unite! Muahhaa
Woowoo typecasts lol. And I better not see some reunion special in like 2005. *Yawn* They'll be typecast worse than the Brady's.
Robert Tilton 09-23-2002, 05:01 AM I get by with a little help from my Friends:
Brady Grid:
-------:D-------:D-------:D-------
-------:D-------:D-------:D-------
-------:D-------:D-------:D-------
Righteous Man.
Let's give Jesus a Handclap.
Personally, if I was pulling in 20 million a year on a sitcom, being typecast for the rest of my life wouldn't really bother me that much...
At the risk of the wrath I am about to recieve from the "Friends" haters, I am glad they finally won the "Outstanding Comedy" award.
The show has been one of the funniest and creative shows of the past decade, and has kept NBC at the top of the comedy heap, when many thought the network would slide when "Seinfeld" left the air.
Sure, many will say they got the sentiment vote, becasue this may very well be their last season, but you don't get to be the number one comedy year after year on looks alone, you have to be funny.
Pitooey 09-23-2002, 09:40 AM Ooooooooooo TJL I have to agree with you! I thought the storyline with the Baby was good this year. Anyway..... they've never received an Emmy so it's about time. They do deserve it.
Chocoholic 09-23-2002, 10:56 AM I can't believe that horrible Friends beat out that wonderful Everybody Loves Raymond    Patricia Heaton should have won over Jennifer Aniston too.
I know a lot of people like Friends and I do respect that, but I think it's one of the worst TV shows ever. I have never found it funny or worth my time watching and I think the cast members are bad actors.
jewlmc 09-23-2002, 02:01 PM This show is awesome! I am GLAD it one and let me tell ya..Matt LeBlanc was robbed! Looks like Ramano's whining paid off. :p
I don't get why you guys hate it so much. The show is histerically funny...it tops the ratings....I just don't get the hatred for it...in fact I don't get the hatred for recent sitcoms that exists in this forum in general.
Guys...the old ones were great...but time marches on.
jewlmc 09-23-2002, 02:02 PM That's "I'm glad it WON.." not one....DOY.
Johnny McBeal 09-23-2002, 02:38 PM why does everyone hate Friends so much?
I'm glad it finally won a real Emmy, as opposed to overrated crap like Everybody Loves Raymond winning yet again. Granted, I was pulling for Sex And The City and Sarah Jessica Parker to win, but I can settle for Friends and Jennifer Aniston.
I'm willing to bet in 15 years when Friends goes to Nick At Nite, everyone bashing it is going to change their tune and talk about what a classic the show is and will be making "Phoebe Buffay Rules" screen names and the sort, it's just cool to hate stuff that is currently popular.
Friends is a classic already, and while you guys are bashing it, I think I'll sit back and watch some of my season 1 and 2 DVD's :)
Chocoholic 09-23-2002, 04:56 PM Just because a sitcom is popular and critically-acclaimed doesn't mean everybody has to like it. I have tried watching Friends many times and it just does not appeal to me. It doesn't mean I'm stupid or anything. It just means that I have a different opinion than some people do.
If people like Friends, go ahead and watch it then. I'll be watching Wings, Everybody Loves Raymond, or something else that I enjoy.
I also don't understand why some people feel the need to criticize someone for not liking a TV show. I think Wings is a great TV show. I know some people strongly disagree with me and I'm fine with that. Everyone has different tastes.
Sitcomwriter 09-23-2002, 05:16 PM While I'm glad that Friends finally won I wanted CYE to win of course CYE has quite a few years to go.
GoldenFamilyTies 09-23-2002, 06:13 PM We know you all dislike Friends... we've heard it over, and over, and over, and over... and now you are complaining about them winning two Emmys. I realize everyone has their opinions, but this is really starting to get old.
And boycotting the Emmys because a show YOU don't like won the best comedy award...? There is no logic in that.
Janice 09-23-2002, 06:46 PM Friends is a good show that has paid its dues and was finally rewarded with a long overdue Emmy. Not everyone likes the show, and that's understandable. I don't understand the intense hate this show generates from some people. When's the last time they watched it I wonder? How do they know they hate it if they never watch it? The show has evolved over the years.
From what I read on these boards, it's the Friend's lovers who are criticized by the Friend's haters, not the other way around.
Love it, hate it--whatever. The fact remains this show is a rating's success and has a legion of fans who surely outnumber the show's haters.
The Emmys are all about NBC. They make sure that at least 5 of the NBC nominations win, and they try to go for more while trying their best to make it looks fair. I saw promos for the new Friends season, and I was laughing my behind off! Why, you say? BECAUSE IT WAS SO FRIGGIN STUPID!!!!!! They had their little emotional music playing while the actors are trying to be dramatic! So terrible! People, if I was in charge of the Emmys, I would make it more classic TV-oriented. Look at the Daytime Emmys. They had a whole line of clips of classic Guiding Light. Sure, I'm impressed at the way they had the opening seqeuces to many classic TV series playing on TVs (I was able to spot Bewitched, Mister Ed, Mary Tyler Moore, and I think I saw some of the original Knots Landing opening) in the background, but that isn't enough...

Yeah... two actors that have gotten emmys, two more that have been nominated recently, and a whole cast that has won Best Comedy, and also been ranked #1, and has been in the top 5 for a lot of years... They must be trying really hard, because they have a long list of accomplishments to their names. Laugh all you want, but the fact is, 23 million+ viewers agree that it is a great show. I'd also say that Season 1 and 2 being released on DVD already is a good indication...
Look, it's just my opinion. If you think that just because 23+ million people watch it means that it's good, you should spend more of your time hunting for "Dallas" or "The Beverly Hillbillies." I don't give a dastardly damn how many people watch the show. I ain't watching it, and that's fine with myself.

Agreed. The Brady Bunch never cracked top 10, hell not even top 30, but look at it now! And Id choose Greg and Marcia anyday over Rachel and Ross. Booooooooooooooooring!

I believe The Brady Bunch's best position was #29 one year. And like you, MilKnPepSi, I'd choose Greg and Marcia in a heartbeat over the other two.

I acknowledge that it is your opinion. But when all you that don't like Friends keep knocking it... people are gonna knock back at you. I'm sure if I said I said things like that about Facts Of Life over and over, people would get a LOT more upset. When you say you laughed at a shows promo, and then go on to say the actors are trying, implying that they are not good, the people that like the show ARE gonna respond. And I don't care if you don't give a dastardly damn how many people watch it... you are the one who dissed the show, so I'm gonna give you MY opinion.

I agree with you totally. Friends is not my favorite tv show, but I've always enjoyed it I think there is a rooted hatred against anything current in here (the only times people say a show sucks is when its a show that's current). I bet if there was an internet in the 70's, people posting in here would be rambling on and on about what crap they thought Three's Company and Happy Days. But now, that those shows are long-gone from primetime and nostalgia kicked in, everyone loves those shows. It's even beginning to happen to Seinfeld, people who thought they were "too cool" to watch Seinfeld when it was in first-run are now singing it's praises. Pure hypocrites. At least I can say I enjoyed Friendsbefore the cast were all in their 50's.

Maybe it was the way some of us grew up? What I mean is, I was born in 1984. That isn't too long ago. I grew up watching these old shows. None of the current shows appealed to me.
I'll take Dawson's Creek for an example. They had an episode where Andy Griffith appeared. I decided to watch it and record since Andy was in it. The show just did not appeal to me. I don't exactly know what the writers of DC were implying. Do they want the viewer to find drama in the situations? Joey: Do I love Dawson or do I love Josh? I do watch my entertainment shows like 'Entertainment Tonight' and that plot line was talked about for so long. Are the fans of DC supposed to root for once certain guy every time? Personally, I would've been screaming at the tv for Joey to pick one already.
I don't want to sound like a total current show basher. I followed the Ally McBeal show for quite awhile too. I think I stopped watching between the 4th season. The last episode I really remember was Billy dying. Then we had a bunch of cast changes (Exit Lucy Liu, Gil Bellows, Courtney Thorne Smith, and the cut down of the John Cage part) Then we had new people coming in and I just didn't buy it. Look at this: Let me do a cast list:
Ally McBeal
Calista Flockhart, Gil Bellows, Courtney Thorne Smith, Lucy Liu, Portia De Rossi, Jane Krakowski, Greg Germann, Lisa Nicole Carson, Peter MacNichol were all the main people right?
Keep in mind, I know some of them did make a couple of guest shots after they left.
Gil left. Courtney left, Lucy left, Lisa left, and Peter was half in and half out. That's almost half of the cast. It lost the dignity when the regular cast started to leave and the new people came in. They milked the cow too long. Goodbye. That's all that can be said. If half the cast is leaving, its a damn good time to pull the plug. jmo
I don't know how I got so off topic, so let me drive to the first topic. I grew up with the old shows. I think that's why I favor my old shows. I would take 'All in the Family' any day of the week. I'm willing to bet, I'll still be watching these shows when I get old and gray. Hopefully all my favorites will come out on dvd.
I'll take the old Twilight Zone over any new TZ they do. I was very dissatisfied with the new TZ they showed a few days ago. I'm going to give it another try, because I know that not all shows start off on a steady foot. Just my judging on the first new Twilight Zone, I can tell you that I prefer the original. Rod Serling made the original just come alive.
My theory is that if you were raised on old shows, you'll probably like the old ones better than the new ones. If you were raised on the new shows that came on while you were growing up, then you'll probably like most hit shows. This case is 'Friends'.
WHEW! Over and out. Sorry I droned on for so long.

Hypocrites??!?!?!?!? Excuse you.....but I like "8 Simple Rules" and "Reba" and "Simpsons" and "Malcolm in the Middle" and "Bernie Mac" and "Everybody Loves Raymond" and "My Wife and Kids" and "Life with Bonnie." I hate "The Brady Bunch," a show that was cancelled 28 years ago. I like older shows because of the fact that you don't have to wait a whole week till you see the next episode. Classic TV shows are more lovable too. A lot of current shows use classic TV themes and stars. I recently saw a special in which their was a clip from Seinfeld and the George character had his answering machine message playing "Believe it or not George isn't at home!" to the tune of the "Greatest American Hero" theme song. All I'm saying is that I like classic TV shows because I like them, and I hate "Friends" because I hate it. It's none of your god damn business why I hate it, all you need to know is that I hate it! OK?

Okay, we KNOW that by now... and you don't need to use foul language or anything... this is a civil discussion.
And I liked your post also, Jenny. I understand why some people don't like Friends and other current shows, but I don't understand why some feel the need to remind us over and over in multiple threads.

Right, I got it about hating Friends, I'd say, by oh, the gazillionth time we were told maybe. Enough already. I don't like I Love Lucy, The Facts of Life, and a few other shows, but out of respect for those who love the shows, I don't say awful things about the shows.
If people don't like Friends, that's their right, but I don't understand where this venom comes from. It's only a TV show. It wins a few Emmys, and it sends the rabid haters into a tailspin.
LONG LIVE FRIENDS!!

Many people on the boards may think of me as very opinionated on certain topics and I may throw in an occasional "I'm not fond of such and such show", but I avoid the boards for shows I don't like. I just think its pretty childish to go to the Frasier board and rant and rave about how much I hate the show.
I'm sure several people go to their favorite board (whether it be Sabrina or All in the Family) and run into these "THIS SHOW SUCKS! WHY IS IT SHOWN ANYMORE???!!" kind of threads. It's a waste of time isn't it? Also, it causes a ton of fights and it's just a worthless thread.
I better shut up for this post now. As you seen from my above post, I do have a habit of typing too much.

well, you don't have to be so rude and uncivil to those of us who LIKE Friends, telling us how stupid we are. For instance, I am not a fan of Raymond's, but never am I going to tell his fans that they are idiots with bad taste because they happen to enjoy a tv show that I don't. The way you're acting towards Friends is as if Matthew Perry killed your dog. Show respect to those who like Friends (instead of doing the "just because 23 million people watch it doesn't make it good") and the fans will show respect to your opinions.

I agree with what you said 100%. I think those who like Friends have the right to like what they like without being shot down for it. The difference between people who don't like Friends, and people who don't like shows like Lucy or All In The Family, is that the non-fans of the latter are respectful enough to the FANS of those shows, as opposed to the stuff said about Friends and it's fans in here.
¤I Love Clay Aiken¤ 09-26-2002, 01:43 PM I agree with whats been said about respecting eachothers opinions on shows. I dont like Friends, nor have I ever watched it, but I dont have anything really BAD to say about it. It never offended me, I just prefer to watch Whose Line Is It Anyway? instead. I dont like to insult Friends in a vicious manner (although lol, I got mad when they won the Emmy-but thats because I dont like shows getting all the attention- even if I LOVE the show) because I dont like people insulting my shows meanly either. I try to use the Golden Rule to avoid fights about everyones shows and such. :D

And I'm not mad that Friends won the Emmy for Best Series. I just feel that Everybody Loves Raymond deserved it. I would still feel the same way if one of the other three shows had won. I'm sure if ELR had won instead of Friends, the Friends fans would be the ones saying they are upset.
What is with you people?!?!?!? I never said anything bad about the "friends" fans. I never called the "friends" fans stupid. It's just Johnny McBeal's way of starting a fight I guess, you know, the old "put words in other person's mouth to get them in trouble" gag

What you said about "Friends" fans being picked on by non "Friends" fans is a bunch of baloney! How would you like being pestered day in and day out about why you hate a certain show? How would like the phrase "But it's the number one show!" being thrown everyday? The reason I repeat my pure hatred for "Friends" is because you people pester and ask and annoy anyonje who says they don't like "Friends." Just face it, there are a lot of people out there who dislike "Friends" and they aren't gonna change their opinions just because you are sick of hearing about it! I am 99% sure none of the Friends fans would have made a post in the general sitcoms board about it, and probably not even on the Friends board. They've lost before.

We aren't TRYING to CHANGE your opinion. (You would be too close-minded for that to even be possible anyways...) And you aren't pestered day in and day out about not liking the show. I brought it up because I did not like your remarks at all. I'm sure you would have acted the same way as a lot of people on this thread if I said something just as bad about one of your favorite shows. And yeah, there's a lot of people who hate Friends. Just like theres a lot of people who hate Facts Of Life, and I Love Lucy, and Leave It To Beaver, etc. There are just more Friends haters here than lovers. And that doesn't mean thats how it is everywhere, because I know of 4 immensely popular Friends Message Boards. And "more and more" people aren't showing their hatred for Friends... the same ones keep repeating it over and over. Lastly... we aren't trying to keep you from showing your opinion. We are trying to get you to say them in a more civilized manner. If you can't state your opinion without being offensive or the like, then you shouldn't be saying them at all, period.

The reason I repeat my pure hatred for "Friends" is because you people pester and ask and annoy anyonje who says they don't like "Friends." Just face it, there are a lot of people out there who dislike "Friends" and they aren't gonna change their opinions just because you are sick of hearing about it! You are just mad because more and more people are showing their hatred for "Friends!" You can't stop me from stating my opinion.
if you're really only 12, I am sorry about arguing with you because I figured you were older.
But, because you dislike Friends doesn't mean you should try and tick off every fan of the show because we see something in it you don't. If you're 12, you were only 4 when the show started in 1994. Most of us who like Friends are in our late teens, 20's or 30's, we've been watching the show since the first season. We've all grown up with Joey, Chandler, Ross, Monica, Rachel and Phoebe through the seasons.
I notice you're a fan of soaps, do you like it when people carry on and on about how much they hate soap operas?
Nobody is ever saying you should like Friends, just be a little more respectful to those who do, just like how I respect the opinions of people who watch shows like Raymond even tho I personally am no fan.
Please, tell me exactley how dissing a show is offensive to a person? I mean, if you like the show that's good, but it's my mouth and I'm gonna say that I don't like the show anyway I feel like saying. There's a thing called "not reading the post" that you could all try out. If you get mad at me for saying that, you can simply go to one of the 4 "immensly popular" Friends message boards and read about the good things there. I'm not on this board to be your best friend, sorry to say, but I just don't like "friends." I thought the commercial was plain stupid, and I'm free to think that! This is a thread about the Emmys, and I posted something I noticed during the Emmys. Is it wrong to do that?

Do you know what "or the like" means? OR the like? Or is a word that does not mean and. So that means I was making the point that your comments weren't offensive, but it would be something along those lines. Anyways... if you think I should "not read the post" then it must be bad, huh? Does it really sound like I'm mad at you? No. I have been extremely civil in this post, and I am just trying to get you to realize some things. And BTW, I do go to the 4 popular friends boards, thank you very much. Post away about the Emmys, but try to shy away from telling us you were laughing your ass off during a shows promo...
And about the best friends thing... I know you wouldn't be my best friend, I don't want to be friends with you, and I know not everyone is always friends. How does that have anything to do with being civilized with each other?

Well if you don't want to be my friend, that's fine with me, but FYI, that part wasnt meant for you. But now that I see how you are, I sure don';t want to be your friend either...

And you are even telling me this, why? Oh wait, it was a way to try and make me look bad. Everyone who has read the thread this far can clearly see I was calm and collected the whole time. If you have a problem with the way I acted in this thread, then you are in for a rude awakening in the real world, as I was not being mean at all here.
DarleneIllyria 09-27-2002, 07:36 PM I think we better just drop the subject all together. The more words we say, the faster this topic is going to get closed. Let's try to veer the topic back on track and talk about the Emmys. Who was the best and worst dressed at the Emmy awards? I'm afraid I didn't watch them, so I don't know who wore what. It's not the best question I could think of, but maybe it will stop the bickering.
TVJunkie101 09-27-2002, 07:47 PM Can't we just close the topic altogether? Meaning NO ONE can post anymore, LOL, this is getting so out of control.
