U.S. opens play (Group D) June 12 against Paraguay. Australia also in the group. 4th team still to be decided.
2026 World Cup Final will be in MetLife Stadium in NJ
This can be the World Cup thread, albeit 6 months early.
Here are the groups. There are still qualifying games left.

Wayne Gretzky isn't The Great One when it comes to pronouncing the names of countries.
This looks like a very winnable group for the USA.
Australia #25
Paraguay #36
Turkey #25/Slovakia #45/Romania #47/Kosovo #80
MrCleveland 04-30-2026, 12:11 PM I said that "The Men's US Soccer Team is probably going to be the first team to go into the World Cup Finals that isn't from Europe or South America"...but they might as well tell me "Face It...The Men's US Soccer Team won't make it into the World Cup Finals...ever"!
But...do you think USA could beat the juggernaut team from Argentina, Brazil, France, Germany, et al?
James28 04-30-2026, 03:46 PM My only hope for this year's FIFA World Cup is that Brazil (as powerful as they are) doesn't win the final, or even reach the final, like they did during the USA's last hosting of the FIFA World Cup (in 1994).
There's already an established World Cup thread. Shouldn't this just go in there?

Why you hating on Brazil?
James28 05-01-2026, 07:46 PM Why you hating on Brazil?
Aside from the "They just win too much" argument, Brazil's former capital (Rio de Janeiro) held its Olympic opening and closing ceremonies completely outside of the Olympic Stadium. Let some other powerful team win this time, please.

Brazil hasn’t won it since 2002, so it’s not like they’ve been dominating this thing the last couple of decades.
Unforgettable goals by the U.S. at the World Cup.
Both of them.

And we’re underway. Mexico shuts out South Africa 2-0.
Dude111 06-11-2026, 08:33 PM Ooooh Roy Keane looks as miserable as sin but he has controlled himself this far.
I LOVE Ian wrights shirt!
Its gonna be good Opus!!
Hawkee 06-12-2026, 03:41 AM Never in my life have I seen a sporting event get so much hype as World Cup 2026 and what I think they are hoping is that this event will be as hyped as the World Series or the Super Bowl. Because I have seen as many World Cup promotions and sponsors such as Coca-Cola McDonald's Nestle and Frito-Lay promote World Cup 2026 and I can guarantee that the ratings for World Cup 2026 will go sky-high once it's finished
Dude111 06-12-2026, 09:30 AM Ya that would be good if it did!
The players are certainly good enough!!
James28 06-12-2026, 10:26 AM Brazil hasn’t won it since 2002, so it’s not like they’ve been dominating this thing the last couple of decades.
That does not mean Brazil has to win a second (or every) US-hosted FIFA World Cup, or even be the only viable option to win.

Because the World Cup is every 4 years featuring 48 teams from around the world. That's why it gets so much hype.

Ironically soccer is the one sport with no commercials during the game.

It's not completely without commercials. Fox is showing commercials in these three minute hydration breaks. I guess Telemundo isn't showing commercials at all during the breaks.

Yeah, those are pretty weeny (excuse the language). But they’re staying the whole tournament no matter what the weather.
U.S. beats Paraguay 4-1.

Dude111 06-14-2026, 05:06 PM Lets go Mexico!!
Dude111 06-15-2026, 12:43 AM I watched the game the other night. USA VS Paraguay. USA won 4 to 1. Gotta say...USA makes it look easy!!
I am rooting for USA . Second choice Mexico !:)
Third choice Uruguay. They have the longest World Cup championship drought.
Oh, and turning soccer from 2 halfs into 4 quarters is officially lame.
Dude111 06-15-2026, 03:11 AM I love ya Opus :)
Bonniegirl 06-15-2026, 04:10 AM Third choice Uruguay. They have the longest World Cup championship drought.
Hoping it's not Argentina or Spain. They win too much ! :p
Spain dominates #64 ranked Cape Verde but only gets a 0-0 tie (in Cape Verde’s first ever World Cup game).
Major party in Cape Verde tonight.
Bonniegirl 06-15-2026, 02:42 PM Brazil , Italy and Germany are the others that always seem to win, right? If it's not USA or Mexico , I hope it at least is somebody new and not a seasoned winner.
I guess my third choice will be Canada , being they are our neighbors to the north. And South Korea, being there is a large Korean population in LA. They are all excited. All the bars in Koreatown are partying.
Thursday. Mexico vs. South Korea. That is going to be interesting, besides lots of Koreans in this city, lots of Mexicans too! I wish I could watch it at a sports bar! :)

Yes on all 3. Since it started in 1930 only 8 countries have won it. While you’re down on Spain, they’ve only won it once. And you don’t have to worry about Italy, they haven’t qualified since 2014.

Dude111 06-15-2026, 11:45 PM They are really doing good this time!!
Who are you rooting for Opus?
Hat trick for 38 year old (39 next week) Messi.
Also ties for most goals in World Cup history (16)
Bonniegirl 06-17-2026, 12:28 AM So Brazil is like the New England Patriots of the World cup?
It would be fun and interesting as a comparison to post the 8 top winning NFL superbowl winners of all time , and compare them in order of wins to the soccer. Also we could do it with the top 8 NBA winners too.
Sounds like an interesting project you might enjoy doing Opus.

I’ll do the NFL. All the teams with at least 3 Super Bowl wins. Of course the Super Bowl is once a year while the World Cup is only once every four years.

Bonniegirl 06-17-2026, 02:31 AM So, Brazil - Steelers
Germany- Patriots (UGG) !
Argentina - 49ers
Dude111 06-17-2026, 04:04 AM Who is everyone routing 4?
So, Brazil - Steelers
Germany- Patriots (UGG) !
Argentina - 49ers
I didn’t do the NBA but I think you know it’s the Celtics leading with 18, the Lakers right behind with 17, and then the third leading franchise on the list way down with 7.
A valiant effort by DR Congo to draw with mighty Portugal. These are some #1 vs. #16 seed matchups.
Bonniegirl 06-17-2026, 04:24 PM Today Panama, Panama uh uh uh , PANAMA is playing !:D:cool:
I'll root for them in Eddie Van Halen's honor !:)
Dude111 06-17-2026, 08:05 PM Thank you Bonnie :)

Uh , Mexico isn't playing today. They play South Korea tomorrow. Panama is playing right now vs.Ghana.
You do know there are like 48 teams playing right ? All different match ups over the next several weeks .
Thank you Bonnie :)
I think Opus is rooting for Mexico....
The U.S. first. But if not I’d kinda like to see Narnia take the whole thing.

Van Halen made the World Cup via Coca Cola, but it’s a cover of Jump, not Panama.

One flub by the Korean goalie and Mexico wins.
USA vs Australia in about 15 minutes. The Aussies are a step up in opponent as opposed to Paraguay.

Darn this match being on at 12! It's not Miller time yet, I'm still on Folgers time! LOL. I like the later games when I can drink beer. Yesterday I had fun watching Canada & Qater ( gently weeping) and Mexico/ Korea .
Bonniegirl 06-19-2026, 11:25 PM USA USA USA !!! :):)
Poor Haiti ! I was rooting for them! Even though I knew those big bullies , Brazil who win too much would beat them !:(
And Team Moracco has some good looking guys ! :) So when in doubt what team to root for, I'm gonna go with the team with the hottest men ! so that was a good win !

Paraguay’s win over Turkey (or Turkiye as they now want to be known) means the U.S. has now already won their group.
So when in doubt what team to root for, I'm gonna go with the team with the hottest men !
Another thing we have in common.
Bonniegirl 06-22-2026, 01:33 PM Another thing we have in common.

I was praying Cabo Verde would beat Uruguay yesterday, but at least they tied. :)
Hoping Austria can beat Argentina right now!

Bonniegirl 06-22-2026, 06:23 PM It is pouring in Philly. I guess that is why this Halftime is so darn long!
biffbronson 06-22-2026, 06:29 PM You're probably getting rain from that same persistent system that rained hard last night, where I live. Last week I drove through some of the biggest puddles I've ever had to, at least now I know ones like that likely won't cause my car to stall...
Oh Messi Smessi!! He's the Soccer Tom Brady ! :(
If he was neater and kept things more tidy would you like him better?

Perhaps!!! :lol::D
Bonniegirl 06-23-2026, 12:28 AM Messi kind of looks like/ reminds me of a young Ed O' Neill , when he played Al Bundy.
The next four days are the end of group play where 2 games are always played at the same time.
Bonniegirl 06-25-2026, 12:42 AM The next four days are the end of group play where 2 games are always played at the same time.
Yes! I know. I watched the less popular Morrocco vs. Haiti over Brazil ( AKA the Bullies) vs. Scotland . :p
And Canada lost. But Hubby says that they still aren't completly out yet though. So that's good!
Poor Haiti :( but Morroco is the team I saw the good looking men on ! :D
Bonniegirl 06-25-2026, 12:53 AM GO USA or GO MEXICO or GO CANADA !! North America let's represent!! :)
Oh and yes of course GO NARNIA !!!
So it’s US versus Bosnia & Herzegovina in their first knockout game (tomorrow’s US game vs Turkey has no impact for either team with Turkey already eliminated and the US already through)
GO USA or GO MEXICO or GO CANADA !! North America let's represent!! :)
Oh and yes of course GO NARNIA !!!
If Narnia wins it all people would write chronicles about them.

I cant believe its almost over Opus!!
Except for the fact that there's over 3 weeks left to go.
Tonight the one game the U.S. can lose without consequence. The coach has made 9 changes to the starting lineup.

Good thing Turkey is Turkiye now! USA might have really been distracted with all the gobbling going on !!!
Bonniegirl 06-26-2026, 12:08 AM OH NO !!! :(

Win, lose, or tie they were playing Bosnia and Herzegovina Wednesday in Santa Clara no matter what.
Bonniegirl 06-26-2026, 04:44 AM Win, lose, or tie they were playing Bosnia and Herzegovina Wednesday in Santa Clara no matter what.
What is this Bosnia & Herzegovina BS? Is it like Laverne & Shirley? Sonny & Cher ? Pick one damn name for your country !
But than IDK ? It could end up like when Lucy and Ethel bought that dress shop and thought to combine the names Ethellu's or Lucyeth's .
biffbronson 06-26-2026, 05:30 AM Ugh, for we people of Greek descent, Turkey is the absolute last country we'd want to see win anything. Very long history of conflict and ethnic cleansing, especially since 1974 involving Cyprus.
In fact we Greeks in the U.S. don't acknowledge the names Turkey or Turkiye, we always refer to that place as "Asia Minor."

Yes! I personally have nothing against Turkey or Turkiye , but where I live in California there is a very large population of Armenians . I have friends and neighbors who are Armenian . The genocide of the Armenians by the Turks in 1915 , 1916 I think it was ? was horrible . As I really don't know too many Turks and know alot of Armenians who are really good people , well yeah I know what you are saying!
biffbronson 06-26-2026, 06:09 AM The thing of pride for the Greek people was the winning of Greece's independence in the 1820s to early 1830s from the Ottoman Empire (I can see a footstool joke coming soon...!)
Even I don't know the history as well as I should, but in modern times Cyprus and the western part of what is now known as Turkey had been heavily populated by Greek (Hellenic) people, who were forced out. Anyway, yes the Armenian Genocide is widely considered one of the greatest tragedies of the century.

Definitely! I don't want it to be Brazil, Germany or Argentina.

OMG . I was so happy for an instant. I'm not watching the games today but I knew Germany was playing Paraguay . I just went out to check my mail and my neighbor said what I thought was Paraguay won! His English isn't that good, and what he was really saying was Paraguay has 1, meaning they scored a goal. I checked on my phone 0- 1 Halftime, so that is definitely what he meant . :D

If the U.S. beats Belgium (and they’ll be underdogs) and if all the other favorites win, to win the Cup the U.S. will then have to beat Spain, France, and Argentina in that order.

Bonniegirl 07-03-2026, 09:27 PM SH*T ! Sorry Cape Verde ! :(
And should I even bother to watch Colombia & Ghana? Of course Colombia will win! God forbid if a South American or European country doesn't win World cup! It seems to be an unwritten law! :(
At least Colombia isn't as obnoxious as the Argentine team!
Bonniegirl 07-04-2026, 05:10 AM Well I guess I am a psychic cause I predicted Colombia would win.
James28 07-04-2026, 08:46 AM Exactly, we should get a different team win the World Cup this year other than Brazil
At this point, I don't care if there were a ninth unique FIFA World Cup champion. If you asked me to choose a previous winner to win in 2026 right now, it would be either England or Spain.
Brazil doesn't deserve to win another United-States-hosted FIFA World Cup after Rio de Janeiro put its Olympic opening and closing ceremonies in the wrong stadium a decade ago. Matter of fact, I hope none of the Portuguese-speaking national teams reach the final match.
Duster76 07-04-2026, 11:16 AM They've put on a great show so far, Cape Verde almost pulling that upset last night was something. Senegal had a 2-0 lead at the 86 minute mark looking like the upset of the World Cup, Belgium came storming back scoring two goals in three minutes, eventually winning 3-2 Wednesday. The USA is going to have to deal with that Belgium crew on Monday, a team that cam pull off what they did against Senegal is dangerous. I hope USA can get to the next round.

No Balogun a potential huge loss.

No one ever said it would be easy. Some of those teams could be knocked out. There's less pressure as underdogs.
Argentina needed extra time to beat Cape Verde. How much does Messi have left in the tank? He might get worn out as the tournament continues.
It looks we are now slight favorites over Belgium. Folarin Balogun missing the match is a big loss. I think we win 2-1.
The United States opened as a -120 favorite to advance at BetMGM, with Belgium at -105. On the three-way line, the U.S. is +150, Belgium +170 and a draw has +240 odds.

Dude111 07-05-2026, 03:28 PM It is so charming and adorable to see the world have a good time at the World Cup games in the US. It is beyond wonderful especially for our 250th birthday.

The United States is no more "a country" than the the UK is.
Brits would you call the UK "a country"?
I know -- we are almost as guilty of calling the US America but its really just a nickname, sort of like the UK is Britain.
Thanks for the vent. Please help spread the word.
And try not to trounce us too badly when we meet on the playing field. :D

Ok, obviously the usual person behind the keyboard we know as Dude111 didn’t write this.
So Balogun back helps. Him being gone was one of the reasons I favored Belgium over America. The other is I got Belgium mixed up with Portugal.
Yeah, I’m that stupid.

Reading some soccer boards, the U.S. went from being beloved because of the Balogun red card (“it was totally undeserved”) back to being hated (“overturning it was totally corrupt”)
James28 07-06-2026, 09:36 PM Now ALL Lusophone (Portuguese-speaking) national teams are out of this World Cup. It is Spain who's advancing to the quarterfinals.

No! England beat my Mexico ! And No, to Belguim! And Argentina! :(
I want Norway, or anyone else besides Argentina, England or Belguim. It would be nice to see Morraco win. A North African team, something different from South America and Europe who always win.
So basically I want Norway or Moracco .
Down to 8. The quarterfinals:
Morocco vs France
Norway vs England
Spain vs Belgium

England hasn’t won it since Beatlemania of 1966. Seems like someone you’d support. Plus England winning it all would make Mexico look better, in the sense that no one was beating England.

Have you seen the videos of the Norwegian fans doing their rowing thing?
Duster76 07-08-2026, 02:20 PM I was very disappointed in the America's performance in the game against Belgium, I'm still watching the games but I don't have a rooting interest in which team wins.
It's A Small World After All
That title is very apropos when it comes to the World Cup competition. There have been 22 World Cup winners, 2 European nations have won 8, Germany 4, Italy 4, 2 South American nations have won 8, Brazil 5, Argentina 3. Of the remaining 6 winners 4 are European nations, France twice, England and Spain once, the other two cups were won by Uruguay 1930 (the first World Cup) and 1950 (the first World Cup after World War II).
We see similar consistency in teams that have gone to the World Cup final and lost, of the 22 losing teams Brazil and Argentina have lost 5 times, no other South American team is represented. Of the 17 remaining teams that made it to the finals and lost, 8 are from the European countries that are mentioned above. Five additional European countries have made the finals and lost, Czech Republic twice, Hungry twice, the Netherlands three times, Sweden once and Croatia once. Only the Netherlands (1) and Croatia have made the World Cup finals since 1980.
Of the remaining 8 teams left 6 are from Europe and South America is once again represented by Argentina leaving only Morocco as the newbie.
Basically the World Cup is Europe. Brazil and Argentina. I don't have an answer for any of this, but future World Cup competition needs to address this redundancy. The groupings should reflect a need to eliminate European teams by matching them against each other. The final 8 teams should be more reflective of the entire world, no more than three or tops four European teams should ever get this far again.
Bonniegirl 07-08-2026, 03:45 PM Duster 76- I agree. I think something is amiss. I can not believe it's a coincidence that it always seems to be the same few countries winning every time.
Bonniegirl 07-08-2026, 03:50 PM Have you seen the videos of the Norwegian fans doing their rowing thing?
Yes. It is so cool. And BBG ( Big blonde guy) was beating that big drum after they had won!
I really hope they win. Norway deserves it. And fun, cool fans! I also saw a video of them doing a conga line dance thing. :)
Belgium has always had the USA's number for some reason. They didn't even start two of their better goal scorers.
Many of Europe's better teams didn't even make the World Cup. Italy (who missed their third consecutive tournament), Denmark, Poland, Hungary, Sweden, Ukraine, and Wales failed to qualify.
I think many countries' top 11 players can compete with any countries' top 11 on any given day. Look at how well the tiny nation of Cape Verde played. The gap is still closing.
Africa has made some great strides in this tournament. 9 out of their 10 teams advanced to the Round of 32.
Morocco - It wouldn't be a huge upset if they beat France the way they have been playing.
Egypt - Advanced to the Round of 16. They had the defending champions Argentina on the ropes.
Senegal - They blew a 2-0 lead against Belgium in the closing minutes. I think they would have been a better matchup for the USA.
Cape Verde - They had draws against Spain and Uruguay. Argentina needed extra time to beat them in the Round of 32.
I thought the groups were pretty fair and balanced. The Round of 32 matchups should be based on the group standings. Putting all of the European teams against each other in the same groups wouldn't really increase the chances of a non-European team winning by very much.
Dude111 07-08-2026, 04:20 PM Ya think Belgium is doing better buddy??

There's an easier way to take out Europe, South America, whoever , then attempting to prearrange groups. When you play them, beat them.
Mexico had England in a home field high altitude stadium Mexico "never" loses at with England down to 10 men. It couldn't have been arranged any better for Mexico. Still couldn't get it done.

Well, as feared, no ninth unique FIFA World Cup champion this year after Switzerland's elimination last Saturday (July 11). I hope this sameness regarding FIFA WC champions and finalists is natural and isn't a result of rigging.

Okay, who's just about ready to give up and not bother watching the final two matches at all?
Well, yeah, now that TJ ruined it and gave away the score of the finals!

Yeah. The" honeymoon " is kind of over for me! :(

I’m right in the middle of the hype this weekend. If it were being played in SoFI you’d be feeling it more.

This is a competition, it’s not only an exhibition. Please wager.

Yeah true. Hope everything is OK with the smoke from the fires in Canada! Prayers it goes well.

Yeah, our time would be better wasted finding obscure 70s and 80s B-movies to watch on Tubi instead.
Well, that was an interesting game that vaguely resembled soccer. I wonder what they call that?
Bonniegirl 07-19-2026, 06:44 PM Good outcome! Anyone but Argentina! Way to go Spain! I'm so glad!:):)
Well, that’s that.
Let me once again end this by being the ugly American….
It’s soccer, not football
It’s overtime, not extra time
It’s the field, not the pitch
It’s nothing, not nil
And more neutrally…
It’s a commercial break, not a hydration break.
Let’s all get together again in 4 years in…deep breath….Morocco, Portugal, Spain, Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay.
