2026 World Cup Final will be in MetLife Stadium in NJ

This can be the World Cup thread, albeit 6 months early.

Here are the groups. There are still qualifying games left.

Wayne Gretzky isn't The Great One when it comes to pronouncing the names of countries.

This looks like a very winnable group for the USA.

Australia #25
Paraguay #36
Turkey #25/Slovakia #45/Romania #47/Kosovo #80

I said that "The Men's US Soccer Team is probably going to be the first team to go into the World Cup Finals that isn't from Europe or South America"...but they might as well tell me "Face It...The Men's US Soccer Team won't make it into the World Cup Finals...ever"!

But...do you think USA could beat the juggernaut team from Argentina, Brazil, France, Germany, et al?

My only hope for this year's FIFA World Cup is that Brazil (as powerful as they are) doesn't win the final, or even reach the final, like they did during the USA's last hosting of the FIFA World Cup (in 1994).

Aside from the "They just win too much" argument, Brazil's former capital (Rio de Janeiro) held its Olympic opening and closing ceremonies completely outside of the Olympic Stadium. Let some other powerful team win this time, please.

Brazil hasn’t won it since 2002, so it’s not like they’ve been dominating this thing the last couple of decades.

Never in my life have I seen a sporting event get so much hype as World Cup 2026 and what I think they are hoping is that this event will be as hyped as the World Series or the Super Bowl. Because I have seen as many World Cup promotions and sponsors such as Coca-Cola McDonald's Nestle and Frito-Lay promote World Cup 2026 and I can guarantee that the ratings for World Cup 2026 will go sky-high once it's finished

That does not mean Brazil has to win a second (or every) US-hosted FIFA World Cup, or even be the only viable option to win.

It's not completely without commercials. Fox is showing commercials in these three minute hydration breaks. I guess Telemundo isn't showing commercials at all during the breaks.

Brazil , Italy and Germany are the others that always seem to win, right? If it's not USA or Mexico , I hope it at least is somebody new and not a seasoned winner.

I guess my third choice will be Canada , being they are our neighbors to the north. And South Korea, being there is a large Korean population in LA. They are all excited. All the bars in Koreatown are partying.

Thursday. Mexico vs. South Korea. That is going to be interesting, besides lots of Koreans in this city, lots of Mexicans too! I wish I could watch it at a sports bar! :)

Yes on all 3. Since it started in 1930 only 8 countries have won it. While you’re down on Spain, they’ve only won it once. And you don’t have to worry about Italy, they haven’t qualified since 2014.

It would be fun and interesting as a comparison to post the 8 top winning NFL superbowl winners of all time , and compare them in order of wins to the soccer. Also we could do it with the top 8 NBA winners too.

Yes! I personally have nothing against Turkey or Turkiye , but where I live in California there is a very large population of Armenians . I have friends and neighbors who are Armenian . The genocide of the Armenians by the Turks in 1915 , 1916 I think it was ? was horrible . The thing of pride for the Greek people was the winning of Greece's independence in the 1820s to early 1830s from the Ottoman Empire (I can see a footstool joke coming soon...!)

Even I don't know the history as well as I should, but in modern times Cyprus and the western part of what is now known as Turkey had been heavily populated by Greek (Hellenic) people, who were forced out. Anyway, yes the Armenian Genocide is widely considered one of the greatest tragedies of the century.

But they won the most times. I think that's what AMack meant. :)

OMG . I was so happy for an instant. I'm not watching the games today but I knew Germany was playing Paraguay . I just went out to check my mail and my neighbor said what I thought was Paraguay won! His English isn't that good, and what he was really saying was Paraguay has 1, meaning they scored a goal. I checked on my phone 0- 1 Halftime, so that is definitely what he meant . :D

At this point, I don't care if there were a ninth unique FIFA World Cup champion. If you asked me to choose a previous winner to win in 2026 right now, it would be either England or Spain.

Brazil doesn't deserve to win another United-States-hosted FIFA World Cup after Rio de Janeiro put its Olympic opening and closing ceremonies in the wrong stadium a decade ago. Matter of fact, I hope none of the Portuguese-speaking national teams reach the final match.

They've put on a great show so far, Cape Verde almost pulling that upset last night was something. Senegal had a 2-0 lead at the 86 minute mark looking like the upset of the World Cup, Belgium came storming back scoring two goals in three minutes, eventually winning 3-2 Wednesday. The USA is going to have to deal with that Belgium crew on Monday, a team that cam pull off what they did against Senegal is dangerous. I hope USA can get to the next round.

No one ever said it would be easy. Some of those teams could be knocked out. There's less pressure as underdogs.

Argentina needed extra time to beat Cape Verde. How much does Messi have left in the tank? He might get worn out as the tournament continues.

It looks we are now slight favorites over Belgium. Folarin Balogun missing the match is a big loss. I think we win 2-1.

The United States opened as a -120 favorite to advance at BetMGM, with Belgium at -105. On the three-way line, the U.S. is +150, Belgium +170 and a draw has +240 odds.

I was very disappointed in the America's performance in the game against Belgium, I'm still watching the games but I don't have a rooting interest in which team wins.

It's A Small World After All

That title is very apropos when it comes to the World Cup competition. There have been 22 World Cup winners, 2 European nations have won 8, Germany 4, Italy 4, 2 South American nations have won 8, Brazil 5, Argentina 3. Of the remaining 6 winners 4 are European nations, France twice, England and Spain once, the other two cups were won by Uruguay 1930 (the first World Cup) and 1950 (the first World Cup after World War II).

We see similar consistency in teams that have gone to the World Cup final and lost, of the 22 losing teams Brazil and Argentina have lost 5 times, no other South American team is represented. Of the 17 remaining teams that made it to the finals and lost, 8 are from the European countries that are mentioned above. Five additional European countries have made the finals and lost, Czech Republic twice, Hungry twice, the Netherlands three times, Sweden once and Croatia once. Only the Netherlands (1) and Croatia have made the World Cup finals since 1980.

Of the remaining 8 teams left 6 are from Europe and South America is once again represented by Argentina leaving only Morocco as the newbie.

Basically the World Cup is Europe. Brazil and Argentina. I don't have an answer for any of this, but future World Cup competition needs to address this redundancy. The groupings should reflect a need to eliminate European teams by matching them against each other. The final 8 teams should be more reflective of the entire world, no more than three or tops four European teams should ever get this far again.

Belgium has always had the USA's number for some reason. They didn't even start two of their better goal scorers.

Many of Europe's better teams didn't even make the World Cup. Italy (who missed their third consecutive tournament), Denmark, Poland, Hungary, Sweden, Ukraine, and Wales failed to qualify.

I think many countries' top 11 players can compete with any countries' top 11 on any given day. Look at how well the tiny nation of Cape Verde played. The gap is still closing.

Africa has made some great strides in this tournament. 9 out of their 10 teams advanced to the Round of 32.

Morocco - It wouldn't be a huge upset if they beat France the way they have been playing.

Egypt - Advanced to the Round of 16. They had the defending champions Argentina on the ropes.

Senegal - They blew a 2-0 lead against Belgium in the closing minutes. I think they would have been a better matchup for the USA.

Cape Verde - They had draws against Spain and Uruguay. Argentina needed extra time to beat them in the Round of 32.

I thought the groups were pretty fair and balanced. The Round of 32 matchups should be based on the group standings. Putting all of the European teams against each other in the same groups wouldn't really increase the chances of a non-European team winning by very much.

There's an easier way to take out Europe, South America, whoever , then attempting to prearrange groups. When you play them, beat them.

Mexico had England in a home field high altitude stadium Mexico "never" loses at with England down to 10 men. It couldn't have been arranged any better for Mexico. Still couldn't get it done.

I really hope they win. Norway deserves it. And fun, cool fans! I also saw a video of them doing a conga line dance thing. :)

Google Erling Haaland. Check out what happens.

The final four

Tuesday
France- Spain

Wednesday
England- Argentina

The four highest ranked teams in the world. This is like what is often said about the NCAA basketball tournament. The early days are for the Cinderellas and underdogs. The final days are for the top teams.

Well, as feared, no ninth unique FIFA World Cup champion this year after Switzerland's elimination last Saturday (July 11). I hope this sameness regarding FIFA WC champions and finalists is natural and isn't a result of rigging.

It isn't as fun as a team that hasn't went.

I think we may have found out why Senegal lost

Senegal team doctor 'trained as a gynaecologist', federation president says (https://www.reuters.com/sports/soccer/senegal-team-doctor-trained-gynaecologist-federation-president-says-2026-07-14/)

Nothing against him, but maybe not the best skill set for a MENS soccer team.

2 more games:

Saturday 5pm EST, France- England, third place game. Some underdog countries might look at this as a big game, but you know France and England just want to go home at this point.

Sunday, 3 pm EST . The championship. Spain- Argentina

I had Argentina in the final in my Round of 32 bracket. My other semi-final picks (Netherlands, USA and Norway) didn't turn out so well.

They have shown why they are the defending champions. They are never out of a match. Lionel Messi is the 🐐.

Argentina repeats as champions. Argentina 2, Spain 0.

Let me once again end this by being the ugly American….

It’s soccer, not football

It’s overtime, not extra time

It’s the field, not the pitch

It’s nothing, not nil

And more neutrally…

It’s a commercial break, not a hydration break.

Let’s all get together again in 4 years in…deep breath….Morocco, Portugal, Spain, Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay.
