View Full Version : How bad was the Brady Bunch Variety Hour? TVFactFan 09-18-2002, 06:34 PM I don't know if have the right title for theshow that was shown in 1977 i think-the variety show-why was this show on the list of the 50 worst TV shows. TJL 09-18-2002, 08:07 PM It was a horrible attempt to bring the Brady Bunch characters into the variety show format. There were singing Bradys, Bradys in Sketches, Bradys dancing in lavish production numbers... It was a painful, horrifying display, and if there is a God in heaven, he will never allow this to happen again... Seriously, it really blew... ;) TVFactFan 09-18-2002, 09:16 PM Originally posted by TJL It was a horrible attempt to bring the Brady Bunch characters into the variety show format. TJL 09-18-2002, 09:24 PM Originally posted by SOLOMON So how many months was the show on the air? The show aired periodically January-May 1977. It was supposed to air on a rotating basis with other programming on Sunday nights, but it was all over the schedule, and all over after only a handful of episodes... boechsner 09-19-2002, 01:43 AM It was complete and utter trash. It was an insane attempt for a return to primetime and I can't believe they managed to get the guest stars they did. Eve Plumb was indeed smart to stay away from this fecal material. James 09-19-2002, 02:40 AM Originally posted by TJL It was a horrible attempt to bring the Brady Bunch characters into the variety show format. There were singing Bradys, Bradys in Sketches, Bradys dancing in lavish production numbers... I have not yet seen this show, but I am interested in seeing a few episodes to experience it for myself. I don't understand, however, why the Bradys singing, in Sketches, and dancing would be so bad. (I mean, to me it sounds more interesting than any of the prime-time shows out there today. Then again I think the Brady actors and actresses are among the greatest ever, and The Brady Bunch cannot be duplicated, except in reunions with the original cast, of course!) The Bradys did sing on the original show, and I thought they were TERRIFIC!!! boechsner 09-19-2002, 03:38 AM Please don't misunderstand me, I love The Brady Bunch. It's just the variety format for The Brady Bunch Variety Hour was wrong for the Brady family. Even The Brady Brides and The Bradys was better than The Brady Bunch Variety Hour. baronzzz 09-19-2002, 12:36 PM It was very stiff and stilted. Also, It made Robert Reed look silly. He played it like "What are we doing , duh?" and Florence would go "Now, Mike..." And at the original time it was on, there were dozens of variety shows that were actually fairly good (Donny and Marie, Tony Orlando, Sonny and Cher). The Brady kids really are not very good singers or dancers compared to some of the stars that had their own variety show. At that time also, the Bradys werent classic or camp yet so it was like "what in the world do they think they're doing??" Now their variey show is kind of good for camp value. I saw an epsiode about a year or 2 ago (I think on TVLand) By the way I am a Brady fan, though it doesnt really sound like it from this post! TJL 09-19-2002, 04:48 PM Poor Robert Reed. The E True Hollywood Story on the Bunch mentioned that Reed practiced the dance numbers for hours because he had no rhythm whatsoever, and he still looked lost. TVFactFan 09-19-2002, 05:37 PM Originally posted by baronzzz It was very stiff and stilted. I thoughtTV LAND only showed sitcoms baronzzz 09-19-2002, 05:44 PM I think it might have been GoodLife or one of the other ones now that I think about it. My friend tapes me stuff on her different channels and I am not sure exactly which one that was on. boechsner 09-20-2002, 12:47 PM Originally posted by SOLOMON Wh did TV LAND Show a variety show? I thoughtTV LAND only showed sitcoms Indeed, currently TV Land airs non-sitcoms: The Love Boat Charlie's Angels Batman The Waltons S.W.A.T Gunsmoke When TV Land began in 1996, they had a whole variety of shows (sitcoms, westerns, dramas, variety shows) including: The Sonny & Cher Show The Ed Sullivan Show The Flip Wilson Show Hill Street Blues St. Elsewhere Mannix The A-Team The White Shadow However, over the years, TV Land has began to focus more and more on sitcoms. Zebra 3 09-20-2002, 01:23 PM I remember seeing a few episodes of their variety show. They were simply out of their element. The only thing that makes sense for is that this type of show was a proven 'winning formula' and they figured that this would work with some popular actors that can't really sing or dance. Impressions 09-20-2002, 04:45 PM I thought it was a poor move and a sad attempt to recreate the Brady family, I've seen two episodes they weren't that bad but I wouldn't think the show could pull all the way, through prime-time. Well that was a good decision by TV LAND to stop showing variety shows-I don't think i would been able to handle that richheart 09-25-2002, 11:29 AM It just wasn't the Brady Bunch. The heart of the show, Sherwood Schwartz, had no part in this. It's kind of interesting to watch though - one time. Totally embarrassing. Barry "music man" Williams probably loved it though. Having read Growing Up Brady I don't believe Barry did--he thought the disco outfits were ridiculous. On the other hand Robert Reed loved it! Moonlight Lady 09-26-2002, 12:58 PM Yes, I remember the Brady Variety Hour. It was bad, I only saw a few episodes. I can remember an occasional Brady falling into a pool. Oh and they had their own dancers...and Rip Taylor, Who is annoying just by himself, he was supposed to be interested in Alice or something. TJL 09-26-2002, 04:22 PM Originally posted by Lil Kelso and Rip Taylor, Who is annoying just by himself, he was supposed to be interested in Alice or something. You know you're in trouble when Rip Taylor is one of the highlights of the show... ;) blackbiped 09-28-2002, 12:15 PM Wasn't it produced by Sid and Marty Kroft, the guys who did H.R. Pufnstuf, Sigmund and the Sea Monsters, etc.? Which contributed to the cheesy look of the show. And instead of dancers the show featured girls swimming around making smiley-faces into an underwater camera while the Bradys line-danced with each other and sang awful songs. Of course during the "funkier" numbers Alice would provide much hilarity by "boogie-ing down" with the kids. One of the best things about this show is that it was the inspiration for a dead-on spoof by the Simpsons many years later. Moonlight Lady 09-30-2002, 10:09 AM Originally posted by TJL You know you're in trouble when Rip Taylor is one of the highlights of the show... ;) You're not kidding, That's when you pull the plug. ;) callmetootie 09-30-2002, 04:25 PM BB Variety Hour was just OK. It was too silly and goofy I think, but had a very elaborate and colorful set. astro_smurf 10-31-2002, 09:43 PM I thought that the Brady Bunch Variety Hour was a very good show. I have only seen two episodes, the two that TV Land showed about four years ago. I would love to get the other six episodes on tape. I have seen the one with Tony Randall and the one with Vincent Price. My favorite one is the one with Vincent Price. Crystal:wave: harper 05-23-2003, 10:11 AM No attach on his manhood but he had no skill to dance. He did the show because he loved florence and the kids. But rip taylor was obnoxious. The whole concept of a architect all of a sudden becoming a performer overnite because his kids wanted their own show,I mean the whole concept was screwy.only the donny and marie show was as dismal as BB.I guess it was campy and fun to be dorky and wear clothes that clowns would wear.it wasn't on long thank God! |
