Dee had a prettier face in her one shot as Gidget in the '59 movie than Field honestly did in the series.

Well, to each his/her own, I suppose. I never saw any of the movies, to tell you the truth, so I am a little biased. But I think Sally Field as Gidget definitely had her own charm :-)

Well that's your opinion but, they both are cute. Sandra Dee had Blond hair, Sally was a brunette. I liked both actresses.

Sandra Dee is better looking than Sally Field. Dee's a blonde doll bombshell. And she isn't Jewish either. I think Field is a hebrew.

Wow, I had no idea that looks depended on what religion you were. You really do learn something new every day on the internet, don't you?

Well you see unless one converts to Judaism usually to be Jewish means to actuially be of ancient Middle Eastern blood. Ms. Field's ancestors lived in Israel 2,000 years ago and those Semitic types are not known generally for their good looks. Ms. Dee being more nordic in background is almost naturally a more attractive woman.

Sandra Dee is, IMO, prettier than is Sally Field.

However, having said that, Sally Field as Gidget was great! !!! She was spunky and cute.

I dunno... it's been a long time since I've seen Sandra Dee in the role, so I don't know if the following is acurate, but:

Sally Field to portrayed Gidget as a typical teenager, with the gawkiness of a teen girl. Sandra Dee (as much as I can remember) was perhaps a little too sophisticated, perhaps because of her looks.

I find Sally Field's portrayal to be more true to the character.

:)

Let me refresh your memory. The film Gidget was supposed to be about teenagers and remember it was made a long time, the 1950's. A girl who is sophisticated in many ways (in America anyway) is often alienated from other teenagers her own age. So beautiful Sandra Dee's Gidget very understandably has problems with being so sophisticated in someways. As far as not understanding sex much which is one of Gidget's problems, well in the 50's sex was so downplayed to the point where it was hard for many young girls at the time to understand it period (no pun intended). This is a problem that no longer exists for nearly all American girs over 10 years old.

Ah, that is true. Though I'm not quite sure how this became a discussion on sexual awareness, I will address that.

Let me refresh your memory. The television Gidget was set in the 1960s, 1965-66 to be exact. Though it is true that attitudes toward sex were changing and relaxing, the mid-60s were a very frightening experience for young girls Gidget's age (15-1/2). Rules of behavior were changing. Actions and ideas that were once taboo, only a few very short years earlier, became more and more prevalent. And remember, the TV Gidget had lost her mother. If I recall correctly, this was not true of the movie Gidget.

Sadly, your statement about girls over 10 in today's society may be true.

But we are talking about a TV show that is almost 40 years old. I was 10 in 1965, when this show began. I can assure you that I did not consider anything I encountered in life, let alone on TV, with the slightest thought of sexual under- or over-tones. The television show, even to me today at age 47, still does not bring to mind anything "sexual." I see a teen girl learning about life and relationships. Yes, sometimes with *gasp* boys. But more often I see relationships with her friends (male and female), her sister and brother-in-law, and most prominently, her father.

I see a gawky teen girl who is evolving into a strong young woman, with the support of her family and friends. And she's having fun along the way.

I feel the mid-60's was a more sexual time than anytime in the 50's. I saw the tv show Gidget quite a few times, most recently when it was just on tv land. I needed no refreshng on it. But you said you didn't remember the film that well.

My All time favorite Gidget movie is the one with Sandra Dee....

Gidget goes to Rome....... I love that movie... :D

I think Cindy Carroll played Gidget in Gidget goes to Rome. Sure wasn't beautiful Sandra Dee in that film.

Never mind James Darren. This thread is about how much prettier Sandra Dee certainly is than Sally Field and why.

James Darren was part of the Gidget phenomena so I spoke my feelings on it... You already said you liked Sandra Dee.......

A posting about James Darren all by himself here is a mistake. He should only be at most be referred to in passing about starring opposite Sandra Dee. This is an attempt to spread the gospel truth that Sandra Dee is prettier than Sally Field.

Lee, let me explain a little furtther. I am not a cruel man. Even though you opened up with the words "Oh by the way" and made it somewhat appropriate to discuss having seen Mr. Darren on the streets of New York it would have been even better if you had either :a)Started your own posting about having seen him or:b) Mentioned first how great Sandra Dee looked and acted playing opposite him in Gidget. The b suggstion would have explained to those who did not know who Mr. Darren is and his relation to Sandra Dee. Also, suggestion b would have made an even better(temporary!!!!) transition in subject matter from beautiful Ms. Dee to plain Mr. Darren. And then I would have thanked you for your story and got back to Sandra Dee's really pretty face again. Again, you made the temporary transition somewhat appropriate but not entirely and it was still somewhat wrong of you the way you did it. No hard feelings? Now if everyone's ok on this let's (PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!) get back to Sandra Dee vs. (and Dee-gospelly-conquering) Sally Field in looks. You know in the mid 1960's every young teenage girl looked pretty. It was the hairdos. Even Larue (Lynette Winter) looked good in those hairdos. Sandra Dee was a true doll in any hairdo. Sally Field was really slightly less good looking in 70's hairdos. Thus, the cuteness Field had as Gidget was partially the cute hair style that complemented any girl who had it and made her look cuter than she sometmes actually was (as definitely was in Field's case).

...what is the point in raising the point of which actress is "prettier?" Gidget was a good series of movies and a nice TV show. Gidget isn't about a contest of looks, but it seems here it has become one. And I really don't get the whole nationality angle, but I like Sally, and I like Sandra as well- it IS possible to like two different people based on their own merits. But if the whole "who's prettier" thing is what this has boiled down to, well, that's pretty sad...

Nedrta

Well Shindigger, it looks funny that they replaced Sandra Dee with a (at least somewhat) inferior looking actress to play Gidget on tv. Looks matter a lot in the entertaiment world. As for the nationality angle I'll explain that further. Around the years 2000 to 1500 BC a Syrian tribe began worshipping one God. This Syrian tribe was soon known as Hebrews (or Jewish people). They became quite different than the other Syrian tribes who went on worshipping many gods. The Hebrews homeland became known as both Israel and Judah. Around 70 AD the Romans attacked the area of Israel/Judah which the Romans themselves called Judea. The Jewish people left Judea and headed off into Europe and North Africa. Once in Europe they remained almost always apart from the pagan and later Christian Europeans. In North Africa from the pagan and then Muslim peoples they lived among. Today the Jewish people (proven by genetics) are very usually at least 80% descended from the ancient Syrian tribes and 20% (or less) descended from the Europeans whom they lived among for most of the last 2000 years. If the Jewish people live (or at least have roots) in North Africa they tend to have less than 10% North African genes. Sally Field I have heard is Europeanly Jewish. This almost definitely means she is 80% or more of Syrian background and many of these Syrian girls are not very known for their good looks.

PS Field is at least half-Jewish by her mother therefore is probably at least 40% Syrian. I am not sure if Field's folks were actually married.

Neither! I prefer the very lovely & multi-talentedd Deborah Gibson.

Debbie Gibson was (and still is) more hotter than Sally Field & Sandy Duncan...whatever her name was.

First Debbie Gibson would throw a autographed surfboard on you. (Hopefully her 1986 guitar too),. The 1980s girl next door qwould have LOVED BOTH Gidgets.

YOU my frined and I DO use the term "Friend" loosely have NO business in a PRO-Gidget forum.:D)

(Then again Sally Field if not Sandra Dee didn't care for either NUN or GIDGET so she might have well LEFT it to Debbie Gibson..if she plays it (hopefully if she DOES at 33 play GODGET if she gravitates from Broadway to TV) and plays it cute) youldcha accept it?

Oh sorry. you hate ANYTHING Gidget.

Absolutely, Sandra Dee was a much prettier Gidget than Sally Field...

Field was very, very cute, and very pretty as well at that time, but Sandra Dee had the face of a world class model...or even (dare I say) a supermodel...Dee had a classically beautiful face...

I'll say this...both Sandra and Sally would have been much sought-after if they went to MY high school...

In terms of actually playing the part, I think Sally is every bit as good, if not better, than Sandra...I admit it's been a while since I've seen S Dee in a Gidget movie, while I've recently seen the Gidget reruns which TV Land runs on the weekends... I thought Sally Field did a fantastic job in that show...

Guess I luv 'em both!!

Well, if you're going to judge beauty on the basis of whether or not someone is of Jewish heritage, I suggest you take a look at this Jew right here:

To some "Sally hating Punk":

Debbie Gibson bites!!! And looks like Peg Bundy, not in a good way.

Sorry "Married...with Children" fans. Katie Segal looks OK. I was talking about her character.

What you you feel like if I went to a Debbie Gibson board and bashed her!?!
Though there is enough Debbie Gibson bashing on the "I Love The '80'" board. If you're interested.

BTW, I think Sally was ripped off from "I Love The '80's" & "I Love The '80's Strikes Back".
I know she did some movies and said the "You Like Me" speech at the 1985 Oscars. But I didn't post any comments since Michael Ian Black, "'80's Basher"...what I refer to him as...would bad mouth Sally like some moron who wrote bad things....

sandra dee was much better looking. imo she had a prettier face and developed quite a curvy body as well. how old was each during their gidget run? i recall dee was very young at that time. i never understood the popularity of sally field myself. to me she was just a plain slice of bread. nothing really set her apart in looks or talent. talk about bad acting, remember sally in those bandit movies?

I get so sick and tired of people who always have to boil stuff down to "so-and-so is a better-looking person than so-and-so" I like Sally and Sandra for different reasons and I think they both did a great job with the character.
If it wasn't for Sally, I know a great many guys, myself included who would have written the Gidget franchise off as something only a certain segment of the population could related to. Sally was the girl next door for a lot of us guys- fun, cute, smart. She got a lot of us into that whole surf and sun scene, and in turn we discovered that there was a whole different run of Gidget movies with Sandra.

I don't know how long this debate has been going on, but even one reply was one reply too many. I recall someone here going on in all sorts of directions about Aryan origins and so on and how Sally represented something not Aryan at all! Why in h*ll I even responded I don't know.
So, I'm outta here. Everyone can have their opinions but this thread is just ridiculous.
