While there's been talk of rebooting the classic sitcom 'Three's Company,' there don't appear to be any concrete plans for a new version of the show.

Three’s Company star Suzanne Somers made no secret of her dreams for a new version of the classic sitcom that made her a TV icon. The actor, who died on Oct. 15 at age 76, had floated an idea for a new show that would incorporate a hologram version of her late co-star John Ritter and also gave the thumbs up to the idea of Jennifer Aniston playing the Chrissy Snow character. But despite the talk, there are no plans (that we know of) to make a Three’s Company reboot a reality.

Three’s Company starred Somers and Joyce DeWitt as a pair of roommates who invite a single man named Jack (Ritter) to move into their apartment. But the pair’s conservative landlords, the Ropers (Norman Fell and Audra Lindley), didn’t approve of unmarried men and women living together. To assuage the couple’s concerns, the threesome decided to pretend that Jack was gay.

Three’s Company aired from 1977 to 1984. (Somers was fired after season 5 following a pay dispute.) The show has lived on in syndication and on streaming. And the idea of rebooting the series has come up several times over the years. In 2016, New Line was in negotiations for the Three’s Company movie rights, according to The Hollywood Reporter. But the film never materialized.

A few years later, Somers casually pitched her own idea for a Three’s Company reboot (https://www.cheatsheet.com/entertainment/suzanne-somers-suggested-threes-company-reboot-using-hologram-john-ritter.html/).

“I had suggested a show where you would imagine that Chrissy Snow and Jack Tripper eventually got married and they had a child,” she said in a 2022 appearance on the Behind the Velvet Rope podcast (via YouTube (https://youtu.be/rmXOxNQrA7c?feature=shared)). Ritter, who died in 2003 (https://www.cheatsheet.com/entertainment/are-any-threes-company-cast-members-still-living.html/), would appear as a hologram, while Ritter’s son Jason Ritter would play Chrissy and Jack’s adult son. But Jason Ritter wasn’t on board with the concept.

“I had suggested this to Jason’s people and that the show would be me and Jason, but that John would appear as a hologram because it’d be like he was back and alive,” she said. “But Jason doesn’t want to do anything reminiscent of what his father did.”

Drew Barrymore suggested a new ‘Three’s Company’ starring her, Jennifer Aniston, and Adam Sandler

More recently, Drew Barrymore jokingly suggested that she, Jennifer Aniston, and Adam Sandler team up for a new version of Three Company. Barrymore envisioned herself playing DeWitt’s Janet Wood character, while Aniston would play Chrissy. Sandler would play Jack.

“That would be fun man,” Sandler said during a 2023 appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show (https://www.cheatsheet.com/entertainment/drew-barrymores-show-reportedly-jeopardy-writers-refuse-return-scab-drama.html/) (via YouTube) where they discussed the idea. “That would be incredible.

While there’s no sign that a Barrymore-Aniston-Sandler Three’s Company will ever actually happen, Somers gave the idea her blessing.

“How flattering to have Jennifer Aniston playing Chrissy Snow,” she told Fox News. “Jen is such an incredible actress; she never misses a moment. I would be honored. And let’s talk beautiful. Wow!”

The idea of a single man and two single women sharing an apartment isn't anything new or shocking in 2023 unless there's something kinky going on with them.

I think it's just a bunch of talk that will go nowhere. I'm curious to see how Kelsey Grammar's reboot goes. I don't want to see anybody else playing Jack other than John Ritter. Same for the co-stars. Same for the chatter about a reboot of 'Wings". Leave Joe and Helen alone!

If they ever did a reboot, I wouldn't want them to have new people playing Jack, Janet, and Chrissy. The originals can't be replaced.

I would prefer three young people playing new characters that move into their old apartment. I loved the Three's Company set.

Maybe even have Larry and Cindy as having married and bought the building and they live downstairs as the landlords.

You can have a sitcom of people living together but it would not be Threes Company. The late 70s had an edge to them with sex TV. The show really pushed the envelope just like All In The Family did. People would assume men and women living together were sleeping together in a 2 bedroom apartment. The landlord was so against it that they had to develop a lie that Jack was gay. It was very cutting edge and different. But the last several seasons even on the show the premise was not working anymore. Jack was still pretending to be gay. The roommates all had good jobs and had no reason to live together. Episodes like Extra Extra still played on the stereotype that the set up was all sexual in nature. It just got really dumb. So I dont think you could do a reboot of this show. It was a moment in history before the conservative 80s came and the AIDS crisis came. It was the disco age of fun. That does not exist today.

It wouldn't be the same. I'm not even sure it would be good.

Not only would a Three's Company remake not work today for the reasons already mentioned, there is something else to consider.

A few weeks back I saw the remake of Magnum PI for the first time. Anyone who is familiar with the original would know what I am talking about. A female Higgins? Not only was this character now a female, but the bigger issue for me was that she was younger. It was the same issue with the remake of Hawaii 5 0. The characters that were older in the original version are now younger. They are all 20 or 30 something.

Would that would mean for a Three's Company remake is that the Ropers or Mr. Furley or whoever the landlord would be, would be in the same age group as the roomates.

I also noticed a mistake in the article by Megan Elliott. She stated that both the Ropers didn't approve of a man living with 2 women. We as fans know, that Mrs. Roper knew Jack wasn't gay.

Would anything "kinky" shock anyone in 2023?

Casting is crucial and you know the way Hollywood is now, they would screw it up.

The casting would be all over the place and the jokes probably wouldn't be as funny.

Regardless on who would be cast it would not work. The reason the formula worked in 1977 was because it had never been done before. All the sexual innuendo and misunderstandings were hilarious and never seen on TV before. It was the talk of the town and I remember being in 4th grade and kids would brag to their friend they were allowed to watch it. The scenes like when Chrissy and Jack are in the kitchen with the puppy and Janet hears them thinking they are having sex. In the episode the rivals Mrs Roper wants to sleep in the kids' apartment because of paint fumes downstairs. Janet and Chrissy have a big fight and Chrissy is sleeping on the couch. Mrs Roper comes up and Chrissy then offers her bed to Mrs Roper. When Mrs Roper opens the door to the bedroom Jack and Janet are on the bed and Jack is trying to cheer Janet up about the fight she had with Chrissy. Janet is telling Jack she cant do it and Jack says I want you to do it. Mrs Roper in a panic leaves the room thinking Jack is trying to get Janet in bed. It leads to even a funnier sequence in the living room with Chrissy. These kinds of segments would not be that funny today. But back then they were so over the top. All In The Family is a good analogy. Archie was racist and the audience would laugh at his racism. It was so cutting edge. Today none of that would be funny.
People need to let the classics be. You cant replicate the magic.

Casting doesn't matter?... You're telling me you weren't excited to see The Honeymooners movie starring Cedric the Entertainer and Mike Epps?

But seriously, I think silly sex jokes could still work today, but race and gay jokes wouldn't work today with younger audiences.

Sex jokes may work but not like they did in 1977. It was never seen before. In its first short season it was already #2 sitcom in the ratings. Today the sex jokes would have to be more graphic and that would not make them funny. One of my favorite episodes is Helen's Rendezvous. Everything thinks Helen is cheating on Stanley with his best friend. It was hysterical. I cant imagine anyone 40 years later could have the same impact with the same script.
Casting anyone old, new, or whatever could not due these scripts the same way. The same thing with I Love Lucy, All In The Family, etc

I agree, of course you can't use the same scripts from before. That's was a moment in time that can't be recaptured.

A reboot would have to be new, but include some of the old characters or actors to get the original fans interested to watch.

Not set in the present day. As it's been pointed out, the idea of ppl living with the opposite sex isn't shocking nor new nowdays.

Much of the comedy came from Jack ALMOST being caught making out with a woman, then having to come up with something that will "keep him seen as gay" by either Roper or Furley.... None of that would be shocking today

One idea is, if you wanted to set it in TODAY'S time, perhaps rework the dynamic like make the landlord be either Janet's or Chrissy's STRICT, conservative father, and Jack has to pretend to be gay so he won't throw him out. That might actually work, and fit the whole mood of the country today in regards to how divided the country is right now between Conservatives and Left Wingers

Exactly right. There were so many hidden jokes on the series that always got laughs over and over. Jack was caught with a girl by the landlord and you know there was going to be a good laugh to see how Jack got out of it. The late 70s had gay life really being exposed and accepted. The series portrayed gay characters in a very stereotypical way. It got huge laughs. That would never be tolerated today. I was in grade school and kids would imitate Mr Roper and make fun of the perceived gay kids. But it got laughs in 1977. Long story short, everything that made Threes Company work and be funny would never work today. It would be a boring skit about 3 roommates and nosey landlord. All the elements that worked where cutting edge in 1977. Free sex pre-AIDS and conservative 1980s. Gay stereotypes getting laughs. And even stereotypes between the sexes. It all was an in your face almost controversial laughs. And it worked brilliantly.

If they ever make a Three's Company reboot, they would have to leave out the gay stuff. You can't get laughs with that with the younger generation.

It should be 3 young people move into the old Three's Company apartment.

Plenty of silly sex jokes, physical humor, and silly misunderstandings.

With the right casting, it could have a chance. Of course it would never be as good as the original. Most reboots never are.
