I remember as a child proper discipline in the home and at school, going to church then Sunday school, mother mainly at home (and part of a two-parent family), respect for teachers and neighbours, playing games after school and climbing trees, not sitting in front of a screen, black and white television until the 1970s unless you went to the pictures (cinema) on Saturday nights, the only occasion when I remember eating junk food, but then people were of normal weight and not obese as more are today (not myself thankfully).

I could go on..

Pez dispensers

Playing outside in the summer until the street light across from the beach came on

Climbing very high in trees in times when parents didn't know exactly where you were

The operator who asked for your number when you made a toll call

Telephone exchanges with names

Learning to drive a stick shift on my uncle's Beetle in hilly La Jolla, Calif.

Being given paregoric for an upset stomach, and putting mercurochrome on an cut finger

My mother setting ground beef out on the counter to thaw

Having a Tastykake butterscotch krimpet for dessert at lunch

Riding bikes to school with no worry of them being stolen

Playing with cap guns

Learning to read, write, and do arithmetic in school--and that's all--in the early years

Penicillin was the cure all at the doctor's office, where an office visit was probably around three dollars

And gas was 29 cents a gallon

At all businesses a person answered the phone, and virtually all businesses were local or at most regional

Tuning to radio station WLS AM 890 in Chicago (receive this station only at night) to hear the best Rock music of 70s.

Playing Dodge Ball in high school.

We played Bombardment with a soccer ball; it hurt way more than the typical kickball from elementary school.

Of course the affordable gas for the autos.

The Fairer elections in our history.

The loss of 5&10's, to so many this was a big loss.

A local burger joint called Sweet 'n Cream and a snow cone stand Ethel's Snow Cones. I would love to taste anything from those two places again! I just need a time machine to the 80's.

Pez dispensers Yes

Playing outside in the summer until the street light across from the beach came on Not quite, but yes

Climbing very high in trees in times when parents didn't know exactly where you were Not climbing trees, but other stuff

The operator who asked for your number when you made a toll call Only collect calls, which almost never did

Telephone exchanges with names Yes

Learning to drive a stick shift on my uncle's Beetle in hilly La Jolla, Calif. Definitely not, I didn't have a car until my mid 20's and my parents never drove

Being given paregoric for an upset stomach, and putting mercurochrome on an cut finger Pepto Bismol and Yes

My mother setting ground beef out on the counter to thaw My mother put meat in tin foil under the faucet to thaw.

Having a Tastykake butterscotch krimpet for dessert at lunch Yankee Doodles or Devil Dogs

Riding bikes to school with no worry of them being stolen Not in NYC

Playing with cap guns Defnitiely

Learning to read, write, and do arithmetic in school--and that's all--in the early years Yes, plus science, and social studies (including history). No drag queens.

Penicillin was the cure all at the doctor's office, where an office visit was probably around three dollars City doctor with lots of medicines. Most tasted bad.

And gas was 29 cents a gallon We didn't have a car, but the lowest I remember was 40 cents.

At all businesses a person answered the phone, and virtually all businesses were local or at most regional NYC had their own chain stores. Very few national. EJ Korvettes, A & S, Macy's (went national) and Gimbels

Bright green hula hoop Yes, but not the color. Also Slinky, Mr Machine, Tinker Toys

Also, even in NYC, everyone on your block knew you.

We had CBS, NBC, ABC, and independents WNEW (sitcom reruns), WOR (the Mets and movies), WPIX (the Yankees and cartoons) and PBS (Channel 13).

Transistor radios

Obviously no one had or heard of a cell phone. You went out after school and didn't come back until dinner time.

After dinner yelling for your mother to throw down money from the window when the ice cream truck came. No one ever thought of taking money when you left the house.

A major memorable in my life, was our town had a theatre and when I first started going I believe I paid 23cents, and often a double feature was played, a comedy feature and they sold 5-cent bags of popcorn. What a big event.

I actually got an operator a few years ago, probably 2018 when I moved into my apartment, I wanted to test my phone, I didn't think I'd get the operator but thought, "What the hell" so I just dialed 0 and she came on, and I ask her to ring my phone

I'm just happy theaters are still around, I go at least once a week, thankfully ours is doing well.

It's so odd to hear 15 and 16 year olds say they have never been to a movie theater and just 10 years ago it was a hotspot on fri and sat night for teens

I remember going to the movies with my family as a child. And then when I was a teen, I'd go with one or two friends. We went a lot. I never go now. I probably last went to a movie theater in 2019.

Going to the movies has always been a big part of my memories. As a kid we went to a lot of drive-in movies. I remember seeing The Manitou, the 1978 Invasion Of The Body Snatchers remake. Also Song Of The South, and my dad and I going to see Used Cars, probably the last drive in movie with a parent I did.
My mom loved scifi, so we saw a lot of scifi at the theater, Star Wars, The Black Hole, Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Star Trek II, Outland, Time Bandits, etc.
My oldest sister took me to see Empire Strikes Back, The Neverending Story, and others.
My other sister loved horror, so I saw a lot of horror films with her and her friends when she was stuck babysitting me.

To this day, going to the movies is still a thing, we don't see all of the mainstream movies that come out, mainly because of ticket costs, unless there's something special we want to see. The wife and I saw the new Evil Dead Rise at the theater during our drive up the Oregon coast. And the wife and I like to go to Cinema 21 on weekends if there's an older movie playing we want to watch- last Friday we saw David Lynch's Blue Velvet, and we've also been able to see Night Of The Hunter, Some Like It Hot, and a few Hitchcock movies, among other classics.
And it's fun seeing movies with my daughter, we try to see any of the new Star Wars films, and any horror films that look good, or if there happens to be a classic playing (we went and saw the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre a few years ago) I love that we have this shared experience and memory.

And tomorrow night (Friday) my wife, daughter, her boyfriend, and I are going to an outdoor showing (at the local park) of The Sandlot.
