View Full Version : In 1870 would you rather have lived in Victorian England or the American old west?
Dude111 06-13-2023, 06:27 PM If you were an average working person in the 1870s or 1880s,which do ya think would be a better place to call home?
I would say the American frontier... Back then it was a grand place even more so than now!!

Can you elucidate on what this means to Americans Dude111, before I cast my vote?
JamesG 06-14-2023, 04:28 PM Definitely the Old West as I’d be a regular at the saloons and whorehouses. That actually is pretty much what I do now.
ThisLittlePiggy 06-14-2023, 04:53 PM I'd choose the American Frontier. I'd rather die than be made to wear a corset in Victorian England.
Steve_uk 06-14-2023, 05:01 PM Could we wind the date on a bit..https://youtu.be/U6-2eZwUZKk

Janice Johnson 06-15-2023, 06:59 AM I seem the only one who would prefer to live in Victorian England. Victorian England was CIVILIZED, CHILLED, and RELAXED. The American Old West was barbaric with people regularly doing shootouts in the street!

Just like any black neighborhood in NYC.

Since Dude specified: "if you were an average working person", then you wouldn't be much better off in Victorian England, you would be treated just above slavery, no clean water, limited access to food, etc...
JamesG 06-15-2023, 01:43 PM This thread reminds me of Westworld where they create a Western town w/ humanoids tailored to the guests’ likes and interests.

Six of one and half a dozen of the other I would have thought. https://www.ranker.com/list/hygiene-wild-west/melissa-sartore
Caroline13 06-15-2023, 03:24 PM With all it's faults, one would choose their country of their roots. Nothing to think of here.

Yong Fang 06-23-2023, 08:38 PM Our perception of those times comes from movies we have seen which distorts the time period.
I have read that the West wasn’t so wild in the 1800’s, the towns were fairly orderly and not any more dangerous that communities “back east”. Crime and violent crime did happen but it wasn’t like in the movies with gunfights and showdowns. Actually prostitution did serve somewhat of a purpose since some of these communities just lacked women, it was mostly men working at mining, ranching or other things.
Probably Victorian England was depressing somewhat, especially in the cities. Technology hasn’t caught up with the large numbers of people living in cities like London. But again, our perception of then comes from movies like Oliver Twist and The Elephant Man. Was London and England that dark, depressing, polluted and unforgiving as these productions suggest? I have never been to England (meaning England and not the UK) and the towns to me today seem somewhat depressing, all the houses look alike, lots of conformity.
