View Full Version : the ones you hate...
InspectorExstead 08-22-2002, 06:50 PM there's been lots of topics about fav. books, but what about the ones you hated reading cuz they were boring or didn't even finish them?
i hated reading...
1984 (well, actually, i never finished it) we had to read it in 8th grade and we had a choice of reading that as a class or different george orwell books. i chose to read different ones but the majority won and we had to read it. it was just sooo boring. and it was like this other boring world. it was really confusing too.
great expectations was also boring. the idea of it was cool, but i don't like dickens.
oliver twist....it was one of the books on the summer reading list so i thought i'd read it. after like 10 pgs. i gave up. i don't like the old writing.
Swimfan85 08-22-2002, 07:00 PM im not a big fan of Shakespeare at all!!!!!! like Julius Ceaser and Macbeth

Montana Ponine 08-22-2002, 07:42 PM The Prince and the Pauper.... UGH.
¤I Love Clay Aiken¤ 08-22-2002, 07:45 PM I never read a book I didnt like, because, frankly, I knew the books we had to read in school sucked, so I didnt read them. I would quickly glance over them the day we had a quiz, needless to say, in which I would fail! lol, although sometimes I pulled of an A or B. Thing is, I TOLD my teachers I didnt read it!!! lol. I did read some of the books, if they looked interesting, but some I would read one page, and couldnt remember any of it! I remember my freshman summer reading was Black Boy- the only book I read (although not all of it..its like well over 400 pages) and that sucked too...IMO.
I dont know if they do this at your schools, but when you become a senior, you read short stories..and theyre actually REALLY good.
DarleneIllyria 08-22-2002, 08:08 PM Over the years, I've read numerous books. Some were awesome books, but some of them sucked. Here's my list of books that I would recommend for people NOT to read.
Scarlett- I love Gone with the Wind, but the sequel just dragged on and on and on. I finally stopped halfway through.
Cyrano De Burgerac- Had to read this for Senior Lit. The notes saved my butt because the book was just written in such a manner that made me think WTF? everytime I read a page.
The Odyssey- Had to read this for Mythology- This wasn't the translated version either, so needless to say everybody had trouble with the book.
MacBeth- Had to read this for Senior Lit too. It was confusing in the book, but the notes made it sound cool. I guess that one is a half and half.
AllIWantIsYourClutch 08-22-2002, 08:24 PM The Giver- awful AWFUL book.
Summer of my German Soldier- AAAAAWWWFUUULL book
We Were the Mulvaneys- Yea I never finshed that. Boring as hell.
Nothing But The Truth- Stupidest book of all time. Wow...the kid hums the National Anthem. Woop dee dooooo.

Very serious. Then to top it all off, we had to write an alternate ending...my gawd our teacher was the stupidest human being on the face of the planet.

i SOOO agree...about the time she was meeting the Queen I was thinking "what the hell????" yeah..the last 5 pages were the only ones worth reading cause of :: sigh :: rhett. Bottom line: Bad book.
A Seperate Peace- a gay guy kills his best friend at boarding school- his best friend symbolizes Jesus. The main character spends a page commenting on another guys butt. Lovely book.....BAD BOOK
Of Mice and Men- well written but I LOVED LENNY and they KILLED LENNY. Bottom line- I hated this book!
Animal Farm- same as above only i loved Boxer the horse and they killed him! Ugh and forget that whole russia symbolism thing. BAD BOOK

Yeah, killing Lenny was a mistake. That dragged it down. But at least Curly's wife died too. That dragged it back up.
dawsongirl 08-23-2002, 12:22 AM Anything that was ever assigned to me...
But these were the worst-
Crime and Punishment (Thank God for Cliff Notes)
Madame Bovary

I remember in High School we had to read a book called The Chocolate War. I didn't care too much for that one. I read like.. one chapter of that book and returned it back to the library. I dont even remember what it was about. :D
Warm & Fuzzy 08-23-2002, 12:33 AM (Sorry, I didn't feel like quoting everyone's post.)
... The Odyssey- Uugh, That was a really confusing book. I didnt like it much either. Too much volcabulary involved, hehee.
... Romeo and Juliet was an okay-book. Some parts were quite boring, I must say. But Shakespear does great work, either way. The idea of the potion was brilliant; but it's a shame they both killed themselves in the end. :(
... Of Mice and Men was a GREAT book! But I have to agree with the George killing Lennie thing. That was w-rong. They should have gotten their ranch. :D
... Has anyone ever read the book, "The Crucible?" Arrgh, I couldnt STAND that book. But I forced myself into reading it 'cause I had nothing better to do, lol. There was recently a play on it in June. My teacher was even considering bringing us to see it too! Thank goodness she didn't! That would have put me to sleep for sure!
... Also, "The Red Pony," "The Cheater," "The Witch of Blackbird Pond" and "The West Wind?" (I think it was called) weren't exactly the best books either, IMO. :talk:
... Oh but "A Raisin In the Sun" was a good one I forgot to mention on the other thread. ;)
JoPol_wannabe 08-23-2002, 12:56 AM Books that I hated to read were
Lord of the files. I mean the kids were all gay and they ended up eatting each other oh ya that's a great story
Animal Farm. A story about aminals wanting to kill the humans and take over the world boring
Book on Mythology (can't remember what it was called but it had the meaning of mythology it described each god and it described there life and it had bits and pieces of different mythology stories). I can't stand reading a book about false gods and I had to for English and we had to memorize it for tests, it was the worst book I've ever read.
Actually all these books I had to read for school I wouldn't read these for fun.

If its the same book you are talking about, that was the textbook for my Mythology class. The teacher ran out of hard back books, so a few ended up with the little paper back one.
Some of the stories in it were cool, but others were boring. I think my favorite one in the book was about the chick that thought she could weave better than the god, and the god turned her into a spider. Actually, that wasn't a long story in the book but just a short little description in the back of the book.

Actually..I dont recall them eating each other. They just killed eachother.
Yeah, it's a pretty desturbing book. The truth hurts. If anyone read the epilouge, William Golding has some pretty interesting things to say.

tormented_soul 08-23-2002, 10:30 AM i'm not in high school anymore, but i have some definite hates.
The Scarlet Letter
Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (BORING!)
Cry, The Beloved Country
For Whom the Bell Tolls
Othello (and i actually enjoy shakespeare)
others, however, i really liked. one of my all time favorites is Lord of the Flies... i know someone here said they hated it, and i don't even understand why. the absolute symbolism in the book itself just carries it along. but anyway.... lol.
