JMO vienna waits 08-17-2002, 09:11 PM fullscreen. it annoys me when they use widescreen for tv shows (like ER and The Real World: The Lost Season) Czas na Zywiec 08-17-2002, 09:19 PM This might sound like a really dumb question, but is widescreen where you have the two black bars? Divisionbabe05 08-17-2002, 09:22 PM Yea, Widescreen is where it has the black bars, like on ER. I love widescreen! It just looks alot better. Did you kno you can buy widescreen tvs now? Mossopp 08-18-2002, 05:11 AM I hate fullscreen. You have no idea how much of the picture you actually missing when you watch a movie in fullscreen. I paid a lot of money on a big widescreen TV and I get really annoyed when TV stations broadcast their movies in fullscreen! I am aware that widescreen TV's haven't really taken off in the States but in the UK it's actually pretty hard to buy a 4:3 (fullscreen) TV nowadays - it's all widescreen. britt britt 08-18-2002, 10:57 AM Originally posted by Divisionbabe05 I love widescreen! AKA 02-19-2003, 04:28 PM I was looking through older posts, and this thread made me sad, so I thought I'd bring it back. How could you prefer watching movies and TV shows that were filmed in widescreen in "full" screen? It just doesn't make any sense. Not only are you going against what the filmmakers intended, but you're also missing half (sometimes even more) of the image. I can never watch a movie in a 1:33 aspect ratio, unless it was filmed and intended to be shown that way. If you would like to take just a few seconds to become educated on the benefits of widescreen, please visit www.widescreen.org. *PinkLady* 02-19-2003, 04:33 PM Originally posted by Mijada I like widescreen better. you see alot more stuff. Thanks to DVDs I can choose. Mossopp 02-19-2003, 05:01 PM How many people, as an average percentage, in the US actually have widescreen TV's? Like I mentioned previously, it's practically impossible to go out and by a full-screen TV in the UK now. All UK TV shows are now being filmed in widescreen because so many people have the TV's to support it. I even have a 28inch widescreen TV in my bedroom! Why widescreen isn't popular in the States I will never know. I could never go back to watching a regular 'square' TV now cos I'm so used to the widescreen. Your natural field of vision is 16:9 ratio so why sit and watch 4:3????? *ShortCake* 02-19-2003, 05:47 PM fullscreen on a regular tv.. and widescreen on a portable dvd player ( which I have) :D Titania 02-19-2003, 05:57 PM it kind of depends.. i like fullscreen because the black bars eventually get on my nerves (dont ask) but widescreen is good for some musicals w/ big production numbers where you miss a whole lot in fullscreen. Warm & Fuzzy 02-19-2003, 06:28 PM I used to like full screen, but now I like wide screen. They're great for panning scenes. Plus, widescreen looks more professional. *MIBabe03* 02-19-2003, 06:33 PM I prefer watching things in fullscreen. Your natural field of vision is 16:9 ratio so why sit and watch 4:3????? Well the reason widescreen TVs aren't really popular in the US right now is because they cost so much. I was in Best Buy over Christmas break and they ran anywhere from 600 to 12,000 dollars. The average American just doesn't have that kind of money to spend on a tv especially if the one they already have is still working. In a few years when the price comes down I will definately get one. They have the clearest picture I have ever seen on a TV. I agree with you that widescreen is better because you see more of the picture. I always watch the widescreen version on my DVDs. TJL 02-19-2003, 08:55 PM Widescreen is the way for me. I watched a "pan and scan" rerun of Star Wars on TV a few weeks ago and it drove me crazy. I think choosing between full or widescreen should be a standard feature on all DVDs. They even tell you that before every fullscreen video. Movies are filmed and/or shown in theatres in a rectangular aspect ratio. Since your TV is square, they have to shrink down the image to make the whole picture fit. An example: Return Of The Jedi "Full" Screen http://www1.tripnet.se/~adler/widescreen/jedip&s.gif Wide Screen http://www1.tripnet.se/~adler/widescreen/jediwide.gif If you have a few moments, please visit these two websites: www.widescreen.org, which will explain the whole thing better than I can and http://www.geocities.com/Hollywood/Hills/6781/, which gives you a few more examples of widescreen vs. "full" screen, by using two well-known Twentieth Century Fox movies. ~LadyJess~ 02-20-2003, 12:43 PM Widescreen doesn't bother me and I can easily get used to it but I prefer fullscreen. DetectiveGriffin 02-20-2003, 01:35 PM I am one of them who prefer full screen as well. I know widescreen is supposed to be better, but basically, if there are a couple of klingons on a smoke break to the side of the screen being cut out so i can watch full screen, i dont care. When widescreen tvs are standard, then it wont bother me so much, Im sure. Janice 02-20-2003, 01:49 PM I hate widescreen even though I know I'm missing some of the action. This may sound like a dumb question, but why can't they figure a way to 'fill out' the entire screen, top and bottom? I have a 53" Sony TV, and with widescreen, it's brutal...about 8 inches off the top and the same on the bottom. AKA 02-20-2003, 01:55 PM Originally posted by Janice This may sound like a dumb question, but why can't they figure a way to 'fill out' the entire screen, top and bottom? Not a dumb question, Janice. They can do it, but it wouldn't look good. Everything would look "squished" - all the actors would look REALLY tall and REALLY skinny. AKA 02-20-2003, 02:33 PM Originally posted by DetectiveGriffin When widescreen tvs are standard, then it wont bother me so much, Im sure. When widescreen TVs are standard, you're going to have to deal with "gray bars" on the sides of the screen when you watch things that were filmed in 4:3, though. Here you can get a widescreen TV for as little as £150 (that's approx. $280). Of course, if you want a decent one it'll cost you more but the cheapest ones start at around the £150 area. ClassicTV4Ever 02-21-2003, 11:03 PM I definitely prefer fullscreen. I'm way behind on my video tech knowledge. Anybody wanna trade Beta tapes? ;) Anamorphic basically means that the picture is widescreen TV ready, meaning that if you watch a certain DVD on a 16x9 TV, it willl be sans "black bars." Mossopp 02-23-2003, 09:12 AM Originally posted by TJL Anamorphic widescreen DVD? What exactly is that? Maybe I know what it is, but I've never heard that term. An anamorphic picture is a 16:9 image which has been 'squeezed' into 4:3. When this is veiwed on a 16:9 (widescreen) TV the picture will be stretched out to it's correct ratio and it will fill the whole screen with no need for black bars at the top and bottom of the picture. Anamorphic DVD's offer a much better picture quality than those presented in the 'letterbox' format. TJL 02-23-2003, 11:08 AM Ah yes, I get it now. I checked my collection, and some of my DVDs are anamorphic widescreen. The only way to fly, in my opinion... ;) Dude111 06-26-2023, 01:32 AM On VHS and DVD which is better Widescreen or Full Screen.I like Widescreen.FULL SCREEN!!! It appears they simply ran the films in without any so-called remastering or restoration. All the original film grain is still there, quite simply, it looks like it probably looked when the episodes first aired. Fleet 06-30-2023, 05:06 PM I like full-screen. Looks so much bigger.
