View Full Version : What update was a complete shock/surprise?
For me it was Donald Eugene Webb's wife successfully hiding him out until he died, and then burying him in the backyard.
Also, the fact that Patricia Carlton was found alive after 30+ years of being missing seemed like a highly unlikely outcome.
TheCars1986 12-20-2022, 01:44 PM The text update about Stephen Marfeo shooting and killing his ex-girlfriend 9 years after Doreen Marfeo's disappearance was not something I was expecting.
Or So It Seems 12-20-2022, 03:39 PM The Wendy Camp update for me. I think we all suspected the Noe's were involved, but the sheer brutality of killing a mom, teen and a child shocked me.
Fletch 12-21-2022, 03:22 AM Dennis DePue stands out for me, especially when the update originally aired. That was crazy.

Same. Not that they did it -- but that they finally found the bodies and nailed them for it.
I had seen that case so many times in repeats over the years and then I found UM on Pluto and was binging episodes and that one popped up and when the update flashed I about swooned.
That was always a great part about UM - watching the repeats over the years, seeing the same cases over and over and then that little moment at the end when they cut to an Update.
dynoguy88 12-21-2022, 10:33 AM Dennis DePue stands out for me, especially when the update originally aired. That was crazy.
That would be my biggest shock to an update while UM was still on the air. And being a local (Michigan) case for me, I still remember getting ready for school (I was in 4th grade) and dad reading the morning newspaper and him showing me the article about Dennis killing himself after being featured on UM. I would eventually learn that Marilyn Depue grew up in my city and actually went to high school with my uncle.
I agree with being in total shock over Patricia Carlton being found. She disappeared in 1971 and was found alive and healthy in 2005. I don’t remember anything but a text update about this on Lifetime. You would think her being found would have gotten publicity. This is the kind of story you could read about in People Mahazine. I’m assuming the family requested some type of privacy or something.

Yeah, I think we would all still be clamoring for a lengthy update on this one.
For a minute, I was confusing her case with that other lady who was found alive after many decades. She was clearly far from mentally stable. They featured her in the update. She had worked as a cleaning lady (I'm guessing under the table) since disappearing. Lorene Roberts, I believe.

Labonte18 12-21-2022, 06:07 PM Ok.. as usual, you folks will have to help me out on which case this was.. i think there were TWO of them with basically the same outcome..
DNA was recovered from the scene of the crime.. and eventually matched up to a suspect.. and the suspect had been found dead in a swamp/lake/creek/something a few years after the original crime?
I didn't think Dennis Depue was overly shocking.. Maybe the whole part about him living with the woman and he had the show on in the background.. But.. How else did anyone expect that to end? I never particularly saw him being taken alive.
DALLASTEXAN!! 12-22-2022, 06:55 AM It was just mentioned in another thread so it's fresh on my memory now, but the Christophe Day update was definitely the most shocking for me when I was watching the show on Lifetime in 2003.
another update that stands out is the Sammy Wheeler case. that entire segment is crazy with the 3 suspects accusing one another and then it turns out to be a random act of violence. I've just read up more on it and apparently the killer recently got out on parole.
DALLASTEXAN!! 12-22-2022, 06:59 AM Dennis DePue stands out for me, especially when the update originally aired. That was crazy.
absolutely, I think the amount of detail and vivid witness accounts that were given in that update really set it apart. leaves me wishing that all the updates could be that good. the Jim Burnside update was similar for me with the shootout with police and the amount of details that were given. it was also satisfying knowing that he was put away and could not hurt anymore women.
cordwainer1453 12-22-2022, 12:33 PM The Kari Lynn Nixon update where she was murdered the night she disappeared and the woman in South Carolina? was mistaken. Pretty much makes me question any eyewitness from now on...

Ohhhhhh! That’s a good one. I remember the first time I read that text update on Lifetime. I went from shock to immediate anger and wanting to throw my TV remote across the room. But then I got suspicious because I wouldn’t put it past Betty to lie to Bill about Christophe dying. To this day, I’m hesitant to take Betty at her word.

I didn’t realize that she was the only source that has confirmed Christophe died? If that’s the case then I 100% don’t believe he died
Omar the Satanist 12-24-2022, 08:23 AM Cindy Wisemiller.
The woman who stole money from the armored car company she worked for. Her family members seemed honestly puzzled by the whole thing but it turned out they were lying and knew exactly what happened and exactly where she was.
Janel "Jaycee" Miller 12-24-2022, 08:59 AM There are several: Danny Paquette & Morris Davis.
Also, I truly never thought we would find out what happened to Joyce McClain, Michaela Garecht, Bobbie Jo Obelhozer & Annette Schnee & the other long ago cases from UM's early years. But thanks to some determined detectives, forensic science and a little luck, those cases were solved.
Now, if we could just get some final answers and/or justice in the cases of Nyleen Kay Marshall, Michael Rosenblum, Debby, Dottie Caylor and the many others I will undoubtedly think of after hitting send on this message.
MediaHoarder 12-24-2022, 02:17 PM Some of the cases that have been "solved" after so many years I find a bit suspicous. Often there is very little evidence connecting someone to the crime other than some miraculous forensic evidence that apparently did not exist before. This is especially true when the supposed perp is allready dead.

Yeah for sure, that was such a torment to watch the segment and then the update just poured salt in the wounds. we are so used to the update being positive so it definitely floored me when I saw it. interestingly, I think I've only seen that segment that one time on lifetime in 2003.
sharonite 12-27-2022, 12:00 AM I was surprised by the update to the Traci Kenley/Bill Rundle disappearance. I don’t think that anyone could have “backed into a pond and disappeared so completely that it would take two years for their vehicle and remains to be found” on their list of most likely explanations.
It also seems like a cruel way to die.

WishfulDreamer 12-27-2022, 02:11 PM The man who brought joy to children by playing the role of Santa finding out his daughter had been killed in an explosion at 18. Even worse and not mentioned by UM, the explosion was no accident and his daughter was killed by her estranged husband, who also died in the explosion and took an innocent bystander with them.
Like most people, I had always subscribed to the theory that Lauria Bible and Ashley Freeman were abducted, but never expected to learn they had been alive for days afterward. Another very tragic update, especially to learn that they could have been saved had investigators followed the lead of the insurance card found at the scene.
Rick Church hiding out with Tony Alamo, of all people, while on the run.
Tim Molnar being found in a block of ice thousands of miles from his home.
Need a lighthearted one after all the sad ones: Judy and Becky, the childhood friends who were reunited, getting a call from their first boyfriend during their reunion.
Also surprising to me the first time was Loretta Myers being found alive and well after her husband took advantage of her and dragged her all around the country, including that creepy part where the car was hiding in the woods. Was super happy to see her being reunited with her family.

This is still so painful to think about. Can you imagine being the Bibles...knowing that the girls could have been saved if the insurance card was investigated properly. They must be tortured every day wondering about all the what if scenarios.
Hot Jock 12-28-2022, 08:19 PM Rick Church hiding out with Tony Alamo, of all people, while on the run.
This one in particular was such a trip to find out about. When two seemingly unrelated UM cases end up having a tie in, I find that very fascinating.

Here's a thread detailing AMW's update on the case.
Also, if you look up articles about Church, just prior to his capture he was dating a 16-year-old girl who could tell he had a nasty temper. His fellow coworkers all really loved him. It's kind of a wild ride to read about all the things he did on the run.

Another very tragic update, especially to learn that they could have been saved had investigators followed the lead of the insurance card found at the scene.
If they are telling the truth about what they did to those girls, it is horrifying. Not that murder is great, but it would have been better if they just treated them as collateral damage and shot them both and had them burn in the fire rather than kidnap them, torture them and I assume rape them before eventually murdering them.
And yet with all of this, there still is not either of their bodies. They are still on the doenetwork.org as missing, because technically they still are. To be Lauria Bible's parents must be emotionally draining.

We know who it was that took and presumably killed Michaela, but we don't know where she is. These guys are just scum. The dude has been in prison since 1989, he isn't going anywhere. Surely you can recall where you dumped the body of a 9 year old even if it was 30 years ago.
dynoguy88 12-31-2022, 04:34 PM Also, I truly never thought we would find out what happened to Joyce McClain, Michaela Garecht, Bobbie Jo Obelhozer & Annette Schnee & the other long ago cases from UM's early years. But thanks to some determined detectives, forensic science and a little luck, those cases were solved.
Bobbie Oberholtzer & Annette Schnee - While a longshot to be solved, the fact that Bobbie's mitten had blood on it gave me a tiny bit of hope thanks to DNA tests. We knew the blood was from a male and we knew it wasn't Jeff's. My biggest fear was that the blood would finally lead to a suspect but after 40 years, he wouldn't be alive anymore to receive his punishment. So happy to be wrong about that.
Joyce McClain - Again, it was a longshot. But I was able to hold on to the tiniest bit of hope when her remains were dug up after nearly 30 years and new evidence was able to be retrieved because her remains had been preserved.
Michaela Garecht - I agree with this one. There were no circumstances about this case that ever led me to believe it would be solved.
I'd also add Lisa Ziegert to this list. I had my doubts that this would ever be solved. And that broke my heart because the Ziegert family seemed like the nicest people in every interview I saw of them. Imagine my surprise and shock when it was reported her killer had finally been captured. I didn't know that DNA had been gathered from her crime scene, enough to make that computer generated photo which turned out to be shockingly accurate to how Gary Schara looked at the time of the murder. I was so happy that he was captured.

Yeah and I think the Elizabeth Campbell update left out the info of where her purse was found? maybe I'm wrong about that, but it was found far away in west Texas IIRC. I went down a rabbit hole about 6 months ago looking at that.
speaking of heartwarming, one of my favorite shocking updates was Stephan ross who came to America after WWII. He was searching for an American soldier that helped him in Germany. I saw an update recently that he was reunited with the soldier's family. it was surprising to me because I had watched that segment for years with no update and thought that it would never be solved.

DALLASTEXAN!! 03-07-2026, 03:18 AM trying to find a thread that fit this one.
but watching the Kathy Hobbs segment today, I couldn't help but being taken back at an update that I saw today that said "Michael Lockhart has been identified as a suspect in this case, he has since been executed." I was taken back a little because I felt like it was a palate cleanser compared to the "has since been released" updates where people were sentenced to 50 years to life. all that to say I'm not even a pro death penalty person. I'm like 99% against it, but make an exception for people like this.
VHSJunkie 03-07-2026, 03:07 PM The Kari Nixon segment that had the Lifetime rerun blue smokescreen text update at the end. Saying that she was killed the same night she went missing, the girl at the NKOTB concert was not her, and her killer could have a relatively early parole out year. All this was shook after the segment focused so much on her sightings long after she went missing
Anyone have the segment with that Lifetime text update?
Charlie99909 03-08-2026, 10:46 AM Update WHILE the show was airing: Definitely the Stephen Marfeo update. That was bananas.
Update while the show was NOT airing: The capture of the ONS/EAR/Golden State Killer. I DID NOT EVER expect that one to be cracked.
It’s funny you mention EAR/ONS. In the months leading up to the arrest, there was more local media coverage of the case. Mostly news segments like “is he still alive?”. Weeks leading up to the arrest there were a couple billboards that went up with the composite drawings. The vibe was heavy around Sac, they were putting on the pressure until the DNA could come back.
tvscript124 03-09-2026, 01:41 PM Beverly McGowan's case was a surprise. I did not have "Elaine Parent shot herself when police came to arrest her" on my bingo card. Or the fact that she told police she wanted to change her clothes before they drove her to the station….and they said, “yes.” Allowing her to take the coward’s way out. WTF?
Don’t let murderers leave the room, police. Considering where she was going, her outfit didn’t need to be a priority.

That always seemed bizarre to me: it's not like it's a quick trip to the station to be released a few hours later: they knew she was wanted for a brutal murder and was a high flight risk facing a potential life sentence!
I'm no police or justice expert but wouldn't the #1 priority for a murder or similar violent suspect be immediately getting a pair of handcuffs on and searching for weapons before anything else? She would obviously be getting a new set of clothes where she was headed

That wasn't a freak explosion was it? Isn't that the one where her boyfriend/husband blew up the car they were in? Yeah.. That was it.
There were two of these that were.. similar.. I mean, not, but.. There was another man searching for his daughter and I think the outcome was that she died in a traffic accident at age 18 in Alaska.. Don't remember the name of the person or the man searching for her..

It was a murder/suicide by the girl’s boyfriend who lured her to the spot it happened. The explosion also killed a 10 year old girl who was walking down the sidewalk and eating an ice cream cone.

I often give LEO the benefit of the doubt because we don't know what it's like on the ground, but that seems like one of the biggest epic fails in UM history. It allowed Elaine Parent to take her secrets to the grave, and there were a LOT of them.

At times.. And this likely is one of those times..
They were arresting someone who.. Had left a long trail of false names and identities behind her. This could EASILY have been a case of mistaken identity.

To me, at least.. You don't blame the tech. You blame the people who blindly followed the tech.
There's ZERO excuse for what happened in the Angela Lipps case. She's the one that spent 3 months in jail in TN before being extradited to North Dakota based on facial recognition.
She will - and should - get a payday out of it. the sad part is, when the cops screw up like this.. It's us - the taxpayers - that wind up providing that payday.
Technically.. most cities have insurance for this kind of thing, but who pays those premiums? Your tax dollars.

DALLASTEXAN!! 03-22-2026, 10:00 PM I always am let down when I see the update for Paula Pasciak's killer, Jerry Gervasoni. It feels like so much was done to find him, then the guy only serves 9 years in jail and gets released. there's a handful of wtf updates like that one where a guy rapes or murders someone and only serves a small amount of time.
Allierain 03-25-2026, 12:50 PM To this day I still cannot figure out why, but the David O’Neil update scared the heck out of me way back when and it still does. Or maybe it was Robert Stack’s voice wasting no time bluntly explaining what happened. Or maybe it was the very creepy pictures of O’Neil. I dunno. Maybe one of you can watch it and see what I mean. It was left off the Filmrise collection but you can catch it on the Archive. Scroll down to D for David O’Neil.
