View Full Version : Themed-Restaurants where the Staff Berate the Customers
JamesG 09-20-2022, 12:59 PM I love places like this - there's a spot in the U.K. called Karen's Diner where the staff berate, curse at, and are intentionally rude to the customers. The staff throw the menus on the floor and sometimes have the guests clean up their own tables when finished
In the States, there's a franchise called Dick's Last Resort. I went to one in Boston and loved it.

GentlemanJim 09-20-2022, 01:36 PM Gee, what's the probability that such unruly staff spit on the food before serving it? no thanks!
Caroline13 09-20-2022, 01:39 PM Of course, just what the world needs, more POOR/RUDE behavior!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
With the spit they could flick some ashes in the food too...
JamesG 09-20-2022, 01:43 PM It’s a gimmick for people who can handle that kind of atmosphere. It’s unlikely that they would intentionally do bad things to the food.
stevea 09-20-2022, 02:01 PM I've heard of this someplace. I think it's a great gimmick--guy asks what flavors do you have? Can't you read? It's right there on the menu. Etc.

Yes, love it!
Of course, the pansies who can’t handle it don’t have to go.

Ohm you know what they say about an actor once they get "in character"
I truly believe you (as well as most people) would be shocked at the things restaurant employees feel entitled to get away with.
Putting that reality in any environment where abusiveness is cultivated, seems pretty risky.
Think "mines bigger" type rivalry among co workers .....eeek!
Conan did a bit at a hot dog stand in Chicago where they abuse the customers
CONAN highlight: Jack McBrayer & Triumph the Insult Comic Dog pay a visit to Chicago's infamously hostile hot dog stand.

Babalu 09-20-2022, 05:29 PM Nothing special here in NYC.
I tend to stay away from such places.

I too will take a pass.
JamesG 12-11-2022, 01:01 PM I'm excited - Karen's Diner is coming to NYC!

Dude111 12-13-2022, 09:33 AM We went to this restaurant in florida that called everyone "Ma Lord" and it drove me insane!!
It was some kind of dinner where you watched horses while you ate......
EDIT:
Now they have a website (They didnt when we went in the 90s)
www.medievaltimes.com/orlando
rusty spike 12-13-2022, 01:07 PM I guess it has a certain appeal...not for me.
On any given day in my neck of the woods
-You can repeat yourself 3 times when ordering because the food worker doesn't listen
-Receive the wrong order, even if it's a simple #1 off the menu with no substitutions
-Be told to park because your simple order is taking too long to process
-No napkins, or even a straw for a soft drink
Yong Fang 12-14-2022, 06:54 AM No thanks. Why do I want to go to a restaurant and have someone be rude to me even if it is an act? How do I know its an act? What if the waiter goes too far? I have been insulted all my life, I dont like it. Who does? Life is insulting and degrading enough and there are places where we can get more of this? People deserve respect and friendliness until they show they are undeserving of it. Are workers so dying for employment that they will stoop to insulting strangers? I guess it isnt any worse than young women at Hooters wearing tight shorts and low cut shirts selling chicken wings to louts. Hooters (and Twin Peaks and whoever else like this) are disgusting and degrading towards women.
Restaurants now are obnoxious enough. Especially corporate chain restaurants selling the same thing in the same boxy brown buildings all across America turning the landscape into a bland sameness. Where it is more and more difficult for independent, local resturants to stay in business. Maybe struggling restaurant owners are thinking "Maybe we should start an insult restaurant. Maybe we should hire girls and have them where bikinis and high heels." I mean, is this the stupidity we are falling into as a culture? America and society are getting more and more stupid and arrogantly stupid every single day.
I dont know, it is to the point where it is much nicer to just stay home and cook for yourself and your family and friends. Support good local restaurants ran by good people. "Yelp" (despite their stupid name) is a great resource for this. What I want in a restaurant is a quiet place (no music), obviously good food, a waiter who gives me the menu and leaves until I want them, Wifi, and good beer on draft. Also, if any waiter wears a mask, Im gone.
GentlemanJim 12-14-2022, 09:59 AM It might be fun if each table had a "report" button that would summons a supervisor who would then come out and berate the ill behaved employee in front of everyone.
I imagine that way the customer might leave feeling uniquely "empowered". https://i.imgur.com/TWlyUAM.gif
Little_stinker 12-14-2022, 01:07 PM Ed Debevic's in Chicago has that kind of reputation.
Dude111 12-15-2022, 01:53 AM It might be fun if each table had a "report" button that would summons a supervisor who would then come out and berate the ill behaved employee in front of everyone.Yes lets do it Jimmy!!
GentlemanJim 12-16-2022, 02:35 AM Yes lets do it Jimmy!!
I've got an idea for the restaurant name. Let's call it KARENS. Get it? No apostrophe, so its plural, not possessive.
We'll name the place after our clientele. :p
Yong Fang 12-16-2022, 09:21 AM I HATE the term "Karen".
I looked on Google and in the United States there are about 1.1 million people with that name. I think even before this nonsense, the nameis declining in popularity but still.
How would you like it if this was YOUR NAME? Hey, look at YOUR NAME. He/She is such a YOUR NAME. Think about it. Every person (I take it all women) who unfortunately have this name is now tarred with it being a term for a b.tch.
"Karen" is awful, but it isnt as awful as "Tweet". Nothing is.

.
Oh, you mean like Dick? :D Or Larry (something that doesn't work as advertised) Or "John"? ;) or Tom :( or "Butch" https://i.imgur.com/I5fxh0v.gif
People who look for reasons to be "offended" are seldom disappointed, in my estimation, need to grow a set. That really is the purpose behind my suggestion that such a restaurant as proposed in this thread might install a "report" button so all the whiners can envision themselves as "useful"
My first wife was named Karen, and as it turned out in that one instance, proved to be prophetic...I realize that is only anecdotal, but it's all I got. (perhaps she was a prototype?)
GentlemanJim 12-16-2022, 01:10 PM LOL, do an image search for Karen's Kitchen....and you'll see we won't be the first. But by omitting the apostrophe, perhaps we can distinguish ourselves? :happyface
GentlemanJim 12-16-2022, 02:34 PM "Jack" seems to be a name that has particularly been exploited for no good.

Yeah , poor Dick ! That nickname for Richard sure got a bad wrap ! :D I don't think there are any men younger than 85 called Dick anymore ! But one of the coolest guys alive who just turned 96 or 97 ? I believe ? Dick Van Dyke ! :)
I know John ( can mean a bathroom or a prostitutes customer) But what is a Tom or a Larry ?

That looks like fun !:D But IDK ? I'm kinda sensitive , not sure if I could handle it ! I'd have to have a few drinks before I go there !:crazy:
GentlemanJim 12-16-2022, 06:17 PM But what is a Tom or a Larry ?
Tom can be a peeping tom, or an insufficiently polarized black male.
A "Larry" is something built up to be bigger than it really is. Such as those miracle products advertized on TV to solve your problems, and once you buy one you discover the claims were mostly hype.
So, when you have been the victim of a con, a "Larry" is what you got stuck with
"Alien Tape" comes to mind
And then there is Jack.....:D
Yong Fang 12-17-2022, 03:35 AM The term does not "offend" me, I just find it asinine to say and wish people would quit saying it. There are people in the World with that name. It's not your name, so what do you care?
There is already plenty of words to call an offensive woman. B.tch is a favorite of mine. C.unt. c.untbag (my personal term), witch, wench, whatever. Quit using someone's name.
GentlemanJim 12-17-2022, 12:40 PM The term does not "offend" me, I just find it asinine to say and wish people would quit saying it.
Well, if the restaurant WANTS to attract a clientele that seeks to be insulted, what better way to reach their target?
JamesG 08-21-2023, 09:47 PM I was taking with my folks the other night about the old night/comedy clubs in Brooklyn that closed decades ago.
There was one club that was intentionally rude to guests. My dad loved it, mom wasn’t thrilled to go there.
- Food was served in dog bowls
- Tuna cans were used as ashtrays
- They had a fan under the entrance that would blow air under ladies’ dresses
- They had recording devices in the bathroom where the comics would listen in to get material for roasting the guests

"Karen" is awful.I totally agree with you on this. My mother is named Karen, it never should have become a derogatory term.
TheLittleFaerie 08-22-2023, 04:43 AM If I went I would enjoy dishing it back to them

You were offended when you wrote that. It's in the tone of your post.
Back on topic, I think these types of establishments are a bad idea, because this type of humor tends to normalize or downplay this behavior in real life, even if it's in the spirit of fun and satire.
Dude111 08-22-2023, 07:13 PM I've got an idea for the restaurant name. Let's call it KARENS. Get it? No apostrophe, so its plural, not possessive. It would be funny if alot of ppl named Karen worked there :)
biffbronson 08-24-2023, 10:43 AM We've been trying to figure out if GentlemanJim has passed away. Really sad, the longer he's absent the more likely. :(
