Hospice called me this morning and told me that Dave's oxygen is low and he has a fever. He has been having trouble swallowing and cannot eat except for pureed food. This has been going on for over 2 weeks. But they told me today that he might only have a week to live as his body is starting to shut down. Not unexpected. They are giving him morphine to keep him comfortable. He has not been able to communicate with us so I don't think he even was aware that we were visiting him.
He does not want a funeral. He will be cremated and buried in the Great Lakes Veteran's cemetery about 20 miles from our home. Arrangements have been made . I will keep you posted. As I said it is not unexpected but still very hurtful.

It's a shame. Knowing it's going to happen and having it actually happen are not the same. At lease he will suffer no more.

I visited Dave today. He was more alert than usual and his vitals are all normal. So I don't know what to think. But he still cannot swallow so he is getting no food. They are keeping his mouth moistened. So without food he cannot last long. Also I read that the body forgets to be hungry so he is not suffering from that. How long wil he last? Only God knows for sure.

I'm so sorry. I spent many days in the hospital with my mom when she was in a very comparable condition. Oftentimes she would bite down on the swabs when I moistened her mouth. Continued best wishes.
