View Full Version : Bewitched House Destroyed
tcr1701 06-09-2022, 05:12 PM according to a Youtube account, the Warner Bros Ranch has been torn down to be developed into sound stages - which required the destruction of the Bewitched house (although he misnames it as the Sabrina Teenage Witch house).
It's a long video tour, but in the first couple of minutes the plans are detailed. The Bewitched house can be seen at around 4 minutes.

Dude111 06-09-2022, 07:25 PM Very sad......... Sammy must be sad :(
stevea 06-09-2022, 09:19 PM There are (or were) several Screen Gems houses in that area.
Arfies 06-14-2022, 03:21 PM I knew about the plans to raze the area (Mark Simpson was trying to get a tour there beforehand) but has it actually happened yet?
80sTrivia 06-14-2022, 03:28 PM So very sad. Also leveled was the house from Christmas Vacation, the town and the pool from Gremlins (the pool was also used in Vacation), Danny Glover's home from Lethal Weapon and the house from WandaVision. Also, the fountain and the street scene from the opening of Friends! So many other major film and tv moments just razed to the ground... Mr and Mrs. Kravitz's house was torn down too, of course! :( :( :(

I believe so. The video was not allowed to be uploaded (at the studio's request) until it was too late (for fans) to do anything about it.
I always took a kind of comfort that the Bewitched house facade was still around...but I guess we have the real house it was based on still here (although reversed design).
Willbo 06-17-2022, 04:05 PM This is really sad. So much history gone.
biffbronson 06-18-2022, 03:29 AM Really a shame, you would think moving the facade to another location would've been well worthwhile.
merlinjones 06-18-2022, 05:18 AM A tragedy. That Screen Gems neighborhood still included the Bewitched house, the Blondie/Donna Reed/Dennis the Menace house, the Tony Nelson/Jeannie house, the Partridge Family house and the park seen in all those shows (and Friends). (the Gidget house was already torn down I think).
I have some snaps from the 90s of me peeking into the Stephens front window like Mrs. Kravitz (had a friend who worked on that lot at the time).
Guess it was a miracle it lasted this long...
Dude111 06-19-2022, 03:59 AM Its sad seeing it all go........... But with how crappy things are,its no surprise :(
merlinjones 06-19-2022, 04:47 AM Back in the early 90s when Nick-at-Nite was showing all the classics, and progressive dinner parties were still a fad -- I thought it would be a great promotional event to have a progressive dinner party on the old Screen Gems lot - serving to prize-winning guests in the front yards of the facades.
Start at Samatha and Darrin's for martinis (double) and hors douvres, then to Shirley Partridge's for a salad, then to Tony and Jeannie's for an Arabian feast main course and wind up at Donna Reed's for cake and coffee.
Coffeecup 06-19-2022, 11:41 AM I look at this way. The houses have been used for ? 60+ years and I wondering if new tv shows want new houses to use to film their programs. Many people of the past 60+ years will say, Thats the house they used for Bewitched and that odd why is Fred Jones living there. They may just want fresh looks.

I believe the plan is to build "state of the art" sound-stages. So you will see more CGI neighborhoods and very few actual on location houses. The "real" world is slipping away into computer generated junk.
the truth 06-21-2022, 07:27 PM I didn't realize this was announced some time ago. Here's a link to what it's supposed to look like...

And the November '21 story about what it's going to become....

tcr1701 06-22-2022, 07:12 AM The new design looks like a computer chip when seen from above. That's probably appropriate considering what hollywood has become.

They should just keep the older houses, they look much nicer!!!!!!
tcr1701 07-02-2022, 06:03 PM There is an effort to save the structures.

Save the Warner Bros. Ranch Sets. Beloved structures from TV and movie shows will soon be bulldozed. Redevelopment there is imminent, but the structures could still be preserved and perhaps moved elsewhere.
Here is an email address for you to send your message to: SaveTheRanchLot@outlook.com Address it to Mr. Nagler and Mr. Worthe.
MichaelKeith 02-28-2023, 04:32 PM I just pulled up 411 North Hollywood Way, Burbank, CA in Googlemaps and as of today, 2/28/23, the old backlot with the old houses still stands. My guess is by the end of this year, it will all be gone.
Willbo 03-01-2023, 03:20 PM I am sure they could move the facades or even donate them to museums like the Smithsonian.

Probably means they couldn't be saved.

Dude111 04-22-2023, 05:15 PM Very sad :(
MichaelKeith 04-24-2023, 10:57 AM Yep, really sad. The Bewitched house has been there since 1963 and the house next door to the left (the Hazel/Gidget) house was built back around 1941 and the I Dream of Jeannie/Father Knows Best/Blondie house was also built about 1939.
I just wonder if Liz Montgomery would have felt a twinge of sadness about this (tear down of house) or if she would have just brushed it off without a care?
tcr1701 06-12-2023, 07:29 PM A last look at the house before it's destroyed. Such a shame I still say.

Dude111 06-13-2023, 06:44 PM I hope someone stops them!!!!!!!!
Someone should move in!!!!!!!
cloggedmind 06-13-2023, 10:33 PM 'Twas also Dr. Bellows' house, right? And April The Laundress' from The Monkees.
I thought the whole lot was razed a year ago? One of the walkthrough vloggers said they had to wait to show the footage they recorded until work began. Some kind of non-disclosure/safety/bs thing.
tcr1701 09-25-2023, 12:31 PM The demolition continues - Bewitched house may be gone by now

rusty spike 09-25-2023, 05:06 PM Are they planning to build parking lots where the houses once stood?

tcr1701 09-26-2023, 03:39 PM Are they planning to build parking lots where the houses once stood?
New sound stages are planned. They can just film everything against green screen and add houses and buildings in digitally. Which always looks terrible. Real facade houses/buildings add much better realism to a scene.

The interiors of these houses are basically not habitable. There was a guy on Youtube walking through some of them, actually expecting (or maybe he was good at lying) to see the soundstage layout. The houses are mostly shells with gutted interiors.
Dude111 09-27-2023, 04:09 PM Thats sad...........
tcr1701 10-09-2023, 07:30 AM Everything is getting cleared out. The Bewitched house may already be gone. Some of these structures have the letter K on them as seen here...maybe that means they are Keeping them once disassembled. There was a rumor some buildings would be kept but not confirmed.

Dude111 10-11-2023, 03:42 PM Its sad they arent kept in better shape :(
tcr1701 10-11-2023, 04:48 PM In this recent photo as the lot is cleared you can see how thin the Bewitched House facade was. There's not much depth at all past the front section where the den would have been.

80sTrivia 10-17-2023, 08:17 AM This is devastating to pop culture fanatics such as myself! :( :( :(
MichaelKeith 10-17-2023, 02:36 PM The house is totally gone as of today, as is the old "Hazel/Gidget" house. See this youtube video. Copy and paste it into your browser address bar. Very sad.

Hazel Anyday 10-17-2023, 07:39 PM I feel like blowing taps. That's a crime both those "houses" should have been preserved and kept out. Even for a tourist attraction it would have been good. Maybe if they wanted that land for a parking lot or whatever the fools decide to do with it they still could have moved those house facades somewhere else.
Oh well, just like the people who once were supposed to live there are gone:(, I suppose it's only fair the houses should be gone too. I don't like the idea that a house or car should outlive it's owner. But still I wish they had been preserved.
Hazel Anyday 10-17-2023, 07:45 PM Oh, I can't watch. I just started to watch that video of those icons of houses being torn down. I could only watch the first 30 or 40 seconds I had to turn it off. It was like watching a murder.
MichaelKeith 10-17-2023, 09:04 PM Right, HazelAnyday, it’s very sad. I’m so glad I own both Bewitched and Hazel on DVD so I can watch them anytime. These houses were icons and important characters in each show. I also feel the same about the Jeannie/Father Knows Best house. If you watch closely, you can even see the Hazel and Jeannie houses in some of the original Three Stooges shows, that were also filmed at Columbia Studios.
tcr1701 10-19-2023, 07:24 PM I think it's just terrible. So much history just gone. With the house now gone, Bewitched is finally and completely a past memory. It's a shame too as physical sets and building facades outside add a touch of realism to TV and movies. CGI is just cold and lifeless.
Michael Learned was talking about fans of The Waltons and how passionate they are. But in another twenty years or so no one will even remember the show (due to progress and the passing of years).
Dude111 10-20-2023, 01:43 AM Yes its very sad they dont care more about the past WHICH WAS MUCH BETTER!!
