Can you think of the longest running spin-off? I know The Facts of Life was from 1979-1988 thats like 9 years. Can anyone think of a longer one than that?

"Frasier" looks like it will set the new record in another season or two..

Happu Days was 10 years. That was a spin off of an episode of Love American Style

While that is a popular theory, it's just not true. According to Ron Howard that's not true, LAS did air a skit once that many believed to have been the idea for happy Days but its not really true. Happy Day's IS NOT A SPINOFF.

You're probably right. It's doubtful that Frasier will surpass the Simpsons.

I don't know, NBC seems to love FRASER, so it just may surpass The Simpsons.

I don't know...

Simpsons is an animated series. As long as the writers keep coming up with ideas, and as long as the actors are willing to do the voices, that show could go on forever...
Live actors, on the other hand, grow weary of playing the same characters year after year...

true, but keep in mind that FRASER has a 5-year contract left at NBC. so it very well could surpass the Simpsons.

Well at this piont, the longest-running non-animated spin-off series is The Jeffersons which lasted 11 seasons and made a total of 253 episodes.
I don't consider Happy Days a spin-off but if it was it would probably the longest-running one. Just my thoughts.

Hmmm. Maybe you're right. "Simpsons" has never gotten much respect, I mean, it has never been nominated for an Emmy for outstanding comedy, because they still categorze it as a cartoon. So while it may in fact set the record for longest running spinoff, many will still see it as "just a cartoon." Kelsey Grammer will set the record for most years playing the same TV character, so it is possible the folks at Frasier want to set another record as well...

Personally I think "Simpsons" has gotten pretty stale the past few seasons, but it's FOX's signature show, and they don't want it to end.

Well actually THE SIMPSONS was nominated as Best Comedy Series one time, but it lost so then it went back to the best animated series race, rightfully so as it is a cartoon.

"CatDog" is a cartoon. Do you think "Simpsons" should be in the same category as that show?

Well, YES, Why should an animate series, A CARTOON compete in the same category as shows that feauter REAL ACTORS AND ACTRESSESS? While, i'm admitely not a Simpsons fan, i wouldn't want any animate series to compete against any live action show, it isn't fair, no matter how good the animated show is, it isn't fair, to the animated show or to the live action shows.

Oh please...
"Simpsons" is a Prime Time show. It should be lumped in with the other prime time shows. Despite my beliefe that the Simpsons have slipped the past few years, it is still more entertaining than several live action sitcoms.

Kelsey Grammer has five more years on Frasier? I don't understand, it will have atleast fifteen seasons? I know it is guaranteed an eleventh season, show me proof of five.

"I want it to end!! Its one of those shows that wont go away!!"

Don't say that, some shows I didn't like, I watched again and now they are some of my favorite shows, then it ends the next year, doesn't that suck?

Simpsons is a cartoon, it shouldn't go for an Emmy. That's it, Emmy is for PEOPLE.

Emmys can go to any show no matter what it is. Cartoons can get Emmys, some of them deserve it.

Yeah but for Animated Series, NOT for Comedy Series, that is just unfair to the PEOPLE! But giving an award for Animated Series is fine.

I agree...

Simpsons has proven itself among all of the other prime time series...
It deserves to be nominated with the rest...

The Simpsons is a cartoon. Yes it runs in a primetime spot, yes it makes you laugh. But Emmy are awarded to PEOPLE! lol  The fact that you guys are spending so much time debating this speaks volumes on your priorities. At any rate, my opinion is this: The Simpsons is good enough to win an Emmy for Best Cartoon Series but not good enough to win one for Best Comedy Series. Maybe they could make a new catagory: Best Cartoon in Primetime! :)

If they did that, I predict a FOX show will win the award every year. (lol, aren't I taking a risk?)

:happyface let's see... "Benson" ran from 1979-1986 and it's a spin-off from "Soap". "Empty Nest" ran from 1988-1995 and that's a spin-off from "Golden Girls". "Petticoat Junction" ran from 1963-1970 and that's a spin-off from "The Beverly Hillbillies". "Frasier", well, we know it just started it's tenth season and it's a spin-off from "Cheers"... I don't count "The Simpsons" as a sitcom because it's a cartoon like "The Flintstones" were in the '60s. As far as comedy is concerned, "The Jeffersons" ran for 10 years; 1975-1985, and tied with that is "Frasier", currently in it's 10th season set to end in the spring of 2003. If we were talking about drama, "Knots Landing" is the longest running spin-off lasting 14 years, 1979-1993! The second best is "Trapper John, MD" which ran from 1979-1986. That show is a spin-off from "M*A*S*H" because it dealt with the life of "Trapper" John McIntyre 28 years after the Korean War! They had to age the character and out went Wayne Rogers and in came Pernell Roberts!

Longest Running spin-off that would be KNOTS LANDING, which was a DALLAS spin-off and ran for 14 years, 1979-1993.
