I think 1990 UM Fan is correct that this is the case you're thinking of. This crime happened not too far from where I'm from and is still remembered. There is a section of highway named after Officer Ganz.

Thankfully, his nephew was not injured (the segment doesn't mention it, but the killer did try to fire at him).
