Twain was a huge cigar/pipe smoker and they even named a cigar brand after him. He said it (tobacco) was a very important part of his creative process.

He hosted a lot of dinner parties for his friends, who all smoked, and he was known to not like those who insisted on smoking only the most expensive brands. He would offer his guests cigars, but he would put the brand name of a cheaper one on an expensive one.

His guests would often refuse them as they thought that they were a cheaper brand and most likely brought their own. Meanwhile, Twain would smoke his "cheap cigar" with them and his friends would scoff asking how could he smoke that stuff.
