I say it's "not a surprise" because Samantha has been absent since the third-to-last episode of the first season. However, I've never seen it stated officially that she left the show, so I asked David Anthony Higgins (Jerry) on Twitter and he responded that she was sadly not returning for the new season. So, it's been confirmed. At first, I was bummed because I really liked her character, but seeing the direction the show is going in, I think there are enough changes that her absence won't be quite as glaring for me anymore.
