Too bad. Seems these classic TV channels only know how to put on shows that have been everywhere and seen everywhere already. It would have been a real time to celebrate if FETV were to add Bob Cummings Love That Bob show or Farmer's Daughter or December Bride.

Next they'll be announcing another never seen & rare show will be added like say, I Love Lucy. Whoopie.

The 11 Am time slot is a big improvement from what METV has been offering. At least I'll be awake by 11...lol!

Best TV Ever Channel on Amazon Prime Video has a lot of 50s-60s shows for 99¢ a month.
LITB is on the free Roku Channel.

Best place to watch is by popping in a DVD. Amazing what's edited out on regular TV showings. Not sure about streaming.

DVDs- most everything available in complete series a plus. Have to keep your fingers crossed player doesn't crash. Worry that you'll be squeezed out with advances in technology. Can't take with you easily

Over the air tv, or cable- won't watch butchered, too many commercial filled shows. I record Jeopardy, judge shows on the cable app and ff commercials. Good for live sports. Absolute pits to watch Nick, metv, antennatv live how they destroy classic tv.

Buy to own streaming- worked out well for me. Have to watch for near giveaway sales only way I'll buy. Never had a show pulled yet. Uncut, no commercials.

Pay streaming service- very nice. Amazon offers many other benefits.

Ad based streaming- get peacock free thru cable. Limited commercials. Decent shows. Easy to use. Roku is a little skakey. Heavier on commercials. IMDb tv has a big library. Some ad based streaming interfaces are messes, or overload commercials. Tubi or Pluto has Becker. Depends on who has what.

I guess that is a product of how well you like the series?

Through the 80s and 90s I accumulated a massive VHS library, all of them which I had watched a half dozen times at the most before they were "ho-humm"ed to obscurity.

Started to do the same thing with DVDs, until I realized I had been down that path once before.

I like LITB better than much of the garbage they put on for us to watch, but the truth is that I probably watch it more often as a cable broadcast, than I would if I had the dvd collection. YMMV

I agree, at 8 am it's much easier to just turn on the TV.

Surprising how many posters watch the heavy commercials, cut versions on over the air, or cable. Do you dvr it , and ff the commercials?

I use the ad time to do other stuff. MeTV's middle break is about 4 minute long.

I record Jeopardy and ff the commercials. I timed how long it was to watch an episode. Think it was 19 minutes. 11 minutes of commercials.

I know this is weird, but if I immerse myself in "binge watching" via DVD, I start to feel isolated after a couple hours or so...as If I have been exiled.
I hate commercials, but strangely I hate not having them more? Something about the live connection.

Plus, just as an example, but I have the complete X files series on DVD. But if I was thinking about finding something to watch, I'd likely skip over the X-files collection because "I've seen all those".

But, when channel flipping, if I tune into Comet-TV and they are showing an episode I remember liking, I might stay tuned, just to savor the parts I remember enjoying.

I'm sure there are tv execs who are smarter than me, who already have figured this out. It's their bread and butter....it's how they know they can get away with that atrocious commercial load.

GentlemanJim
08-19-2021, 05:38 PM
(sarcasm) Plus, as much as I enjoy the show, June Cleaver never engages me directly. That cool guy on the "Flex Seal" commercial, OTOH, is talking directly to me. (/sarcasm)

Some on this board might notice I'm also a fan of Father Knows Best, which is on Antenna TV. I have read somewhere when Sony put that series on U-matic videotape (as they did many syndicated series in the 90s) they matched the old film syndication edits, since so many stations were airing it (my theory is, if that wasn't done the stations would have to retime all their ad breaks). Anyway, those edits are SO bad, what I do is watch the DVD episode, most of time at the same time as the Antenna TV episode. SO much better!

I tried the same thing on Dennis the Menace, and found the audio so bad on some of the DVDs, I gave up on it. On Father Knows Best, other than season 1 which Shout bungled, they must have accessed many of the original 35mm films from the Robert Young estate, and many of those episodes are in pristine condition.

Beaver is on so early in the morning, I'm just too lazy to fool around with DVDs at that hour! Lazy retiree!!

Are those Shout boxed sets the official boxed set of the series? When I was buying tv DVDs I saw a lot of knock offs trying to pass off inferior discs. I always in the back of my mind had doubts about Shout sets.

I may be spoiled from years of watching my favorite shows on DVD but I don't see how anyone can stand the forever lasting commercials that are on shows nowadays. 11 minutes for a 1/2 hour show would be torture to me. (Though I do like that really hard smiling huckster hocking his row boat split in 2 glue. He's so artificially happy I find him funny.)

Most everything I watch is on DVD or recorded by me and then I fast forward thru the endless commercials. Amazing how much time I save by zipping thru those awful commercials (those tortured dogs and split lipped and gimpy children ones are the absolute worst). Though sometimes I'll watch an HGTV or Travel channel ghost show, when those commercials start up I switch channels (also amazing how all channels seem to take the exact same time to throw on commercials). Then if no luck that way I'll go over to the over the airwaves TV channels and watch some crap there for 2 minutes and then switch back to my cable HGTV or Travel channel show. It's a pain, but I can't record everything just to watch once.

I have been recording Judge Judy for years and years now and watch it later that night but those are all recorded on temporary DVD discs those old Panasonic DVD RAM discs, then after I watch Judy (while zapping thru her endless commercials too, 19 min. for a Judy show with commercials zapped) I then erase every Judy show I see.

I never binge watch any show, esp. when on DVD. I'd get so sick of any of even my most favorite shows if I watched episode after episode all at once. I watch one episode a week of many different TV classics, 3 different series a day for a week, then the next episode of those 3 different daily shows the next week. So basically I watch one episode a week of all the different shows.

I could go on but I think I've already put most here to sleep. Nighty night.

I confess I used to be hooked on Another World for years, and I remember zipping thru commercials on it. I taped over them until the tape seemed too old. Never had one of those tapes break.

A couple of months ago I found an episode on a Beta tape. It was some kind of bust at a cabin. I recognized the characters but not the situation--after all, this was way back in 1984.

Those old hags are in Russia and those are the ones begging for a penny. We're supposed to believe that from 1945 till now not one of them ever married, had children, ever earned a dime and have been lying in the gutter since WWII was over. If this was 1946 I could believe their plight, but come on 90 years later and they are still acting like the war just ended.

Like Stevea I used to record on tapes (beta then VHS) the Price Is Right everyday all thru the '80's and '90's but I just recorded over every one right after I watched it at night. Now I wish I had kept those tapes instead of recording over them. I do have one beta tape though of Price Is Right when Bob Barker still had his brown hair dye job and Johnny Olson was there seemingly in competition with who can dye their hair the darkest.

Interesting how the classic tv channels target older viewers with their obnoxious ads. Besides the abused puppies and hags living in poverty. Brain pills, health insurance from companies nobodys ever heard of, pain relief pills with the mustachioed bald guy.

I first tried Hulu on demand when it first came out and its ads were horrendous every 5 minutes. But now with a deluge of ad based services the aggressiveness has really eased up. LITB on Peacock is about 3-4 minutes of humorous or peacock ads. Mostly the State Farm which are actually funny. Then I started watching Cash Cab (UK) on Tubi and that's about 3 minutes of ads. And the shows are catalogued well automatically shifting to the next one. Plus the ability to stop, restart later where I left off is great.

I also recorded and copied over the 3 am GSN broadcast of the old What's My Line? I have many of them but I wish I'd kept them all. They are on Youtube though, and it's interesting to see all the mystery guest stars who are all dead by now.

Those 150 year old actresses begging for money are the worst. Next in line are those animal cruelty hustlers. And last but not least we have Marlo Thomas. For some reason I can tolerate the Shriners Hospital.

They all buy so many ads you wonder how any money is left for the supposed good purpose.

Probably the same is true for the rest of these so-called charities, including St. Jude, Shriners, and all those animal cruelty ads. The interesting thing about St. Jude is the ads say they do not charge the parents. So they will ask TV viewers for $19 a month but ask nothing of the patient's parents?

The sad thing is they are not interested in a smaller donation--they want your credit card so they can nail you monthly.

Not only do the ads cost big $$, but I'm sure the telemarketers that collect the money charge a lot, too.

They do harass you once you give, and won't quit. But many charities do good work despite their shady begging methods.

Shriners- 81

Community Chest 97 (June's charity)

Those percentages are pretty good.

I wonder if charities that don't run those schlock ads, like cancer and heart, do better.

Is that for one specific location? Due to the varied nature of "communities" across America, it seems as though compiling reliable data for a composite figure would present formidable challenges.

Here locally, we have several organizations that could qualify as "community chest" based upon their mission statements. And frequently even they are at odds among themselves over turf, responsibility, and community impact.

It was a specific one. My thoughts too that it would be a hard one to compile as a whole. Put it on there because of the tie-in to LITB

If you have Comcast you should get the Peacock limited ad-based version streaming app for free. It's a terrific streaming service. I'm trying to get through the sappy "Field of Dreams" (not many commercials) my sister insists I watch to chat about.
