View Full Version : ANOTHER 16MM PRINT OF THE BABYSITTER IS ON EBAY

I tried contacting the seller but my eBay account is acting up. Maybe this print has the original phone numbers.
Frank Gannucci 07-03-2021, 01:06 PM I fixed my eBay issue and emailed the seller. I got this reply
Hi,
I'm sorry but I am unable to run the print.
I collected 35mm films for many many years and along the way I bought
16mm prints as well but never got into running them.
Frank Gannucci 07-08-2021, 10:35 PM He also said that he can’t tell if it’s a syndicated print or not. I wonder if this print has the original number.
Frank Gannucci 07-09-2021, 07:40 PM I WON THE AUCTION. Now, to go about finding if this print has the original number.
cloggedmind 07-09-2021, 10:25 PM That is such a cool thing to have, whether it has the original number or not!
I remember how excited I was to get hold of some old Gilligan episodes on 16mm, one from each season, and how the unique mix of the third season theme, never released on home video, was intact on that show's print (episode titled "Take A Dare").
I love having my old Three Stooges shorts and movies, cartoons and features on good ol' celluloid and, even though I replaced the rollers in my Elmo (no tickling!) 16-cl projector last year, I rarely get to have screenings these days.
Frank Gannucci 07-10-2021, 07:49 AM Now, the only problem is FINDING a company that can dub this to DVD. I know back in 2004, my mother was able to go to Walgreens and dub her canisters of film slides to DVD but considering this is 2021 and this is a film strip, I don’t know,
cloggedmind 07-10-2021, 11:39 PM Vintage cartoon afficionado Tom Stathes who runs/ran a blog called CartoonsOnFilm transferred my New 3 Stooges 16mm film to standard def dvd several years back (2010, probably, was the last time I had any telecine work done for me). I don't remember the cost per foot, but I believe the total was less than 100 clams for, roughly 8 minutes of runtime, and the film was fully cleaned as part of the service prior to being copied. I paid the postage both ways (with insurance, even though USPS insurance is.. iffy!), as well.
The copyright state of the 3 Stooges cartoons was allegedly up in the air, at the time, and the film can has the FBI piracy warning sticker on it, but there was no hassle with the transfer in my case.
Don't know if he still offers telecine transfers but he might be worth looking up?
One to avoid is Greg Hilbrich of 2Reelers.com or whatever iteration he uses, now. I think he stopped offering to do transfers years ago, which is good because he was not on the up-and-up, if you get my drift.
cloggedmind 07-10-2021, 11:39 PM Forum glitch - duplicate post. Cleared.
Frank Gannucci 07-11-2021, 07:35 AM Thank you. Would it be cool if this print has the original phone number?
cloggedmind 07-11-2021, 09:25 AM You betcha! Shame it doesn't have the commercials still in place. My copy of "Unconventional Behavior" from 16mm has the original opening, Buick commercial (Smooth Ride), and Jackie's sponsor wrap-up at the end. Very cool stuff!
Frank Gannucci 08-10-2021, 03:30 PM Well, I tried imemories.com in hoping they could dub it to DVD. Since it’s copyrighted, they can’t do it. Any suggestions?
cloggedmind 08-10-2021, 05:21 PM I can capture the audio from the film, just not the video portion, as I have no telecine equipment. I used my Elmo 16-CL projector (now with brand new rollers from Larry Urbanski!) to capture the original third season theme from Gilligan's Island (not available on any home media version) and lay that over an existing video transfer, which I keep uploading to Youtube and then deleting for some reason.

If the print has the original phone number, I could certainly capture the audio and paste it over an existing video file where appropriate. That kind of editing is simplistic, at best.
If the phone number is the edited version, it wouldn't need to be transferred, anyway, as superior versions already exist on home video.
That's all I could offer.
Frank Gannucci 08-10-2021, 05:41 PM Ok. That sounds good.
Frank Gannucci 08-10-2021, 10:30 PM I would try to upload pics if people want me to. There is also a red tag on the film that is very hard to read and I am afraid to pull on it but it looks like it says “Do not…please…after…”
It doesn’t say Viacom, syndication or any date on it.
Frank Gannucci 08-16-2021, 07:31 PM Well, I sent this tape reel of this to cloggedmind. He posted the video of the 16MM footage on YouTube
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=91i_XUcY62c
If you listen to it, it doesn’t have the original number. When I asked him if the episode aired like that for the first time, he said this:
“ Did the episode air with the revised number? I would say, yes. Further, since the Blu-ray set was created by scanning the original negatives and the overdubs are present there, I would surmise that the phone number was changed before broadcast. Plus, remember how tight CBS (and other television networks') censors were, back in the day. They would never knowingly allow a real number to be broadcast that could cost the network even more than what they were throwing at Gleason”
I will have the footage in my possession. It’s a rare collectible.
cloggedmind 08-16-2021, 09:05 PM Yep. Now, you'll have a reel of film to display and dust, occasionally! Just don't seal it in that ziploc baggie with the green sticker that says, "Copy Righted"! Film has to breathe, y'know?! LOL
stevea 08-16-2021, 09:20 PM The credits look better on that film than they do on the DVD release (which I think MeTV masters from), where they bounce up and down badly. I'm told that because they screw up the frame rate and it really shows on credit rolls.
As for Gilligan, I've never heard that season 3 audio version before. There are definite differences in a few places.
cloggedmind 08-16-2021, 09:40 PM Yes, we have no more film scanner! I wish I had more than a goofy phone to point at the screen, but there's nothing really new, here. Still, neat to see and, though the exposure setting on the phone betrayed it, the episode had a pleasant sepia tone to it.
I can't remember which episode, but on the Honeymooners Bluray, one end credit sequence is completely remade via computer generated graphics. To me, having that ultra-smooth, computer graphic "keyed" version looks more unnatural than the overly processed, de-and-re-interlaced, reverse-field-order stutter of the ME-TV version.
Still, none worse than ME-TV's mangling of Mama's Family credits (to bring in a 3rd show to this thread, LOL!). That kind of judder gives me motion sickness!
Frank Gannucci 08-16-2021, 09:44 PM Let’s be thankful that MeTV is one of the few networks that still show the credits full screen (although if they did, it wouldn’t be that big of a deal for me but it would be better if they didn’t) but that’s another story for another time.
stevea 08-16-2021, 09:56 PM Still, none worse than ME-TV's mangling of Mama's Family credits (to bring in a 3rd show to this thread, LOL!). That kind of judder gives me motion sickness!
I was going to mention Mama, too. I'll keep my TBS recordings of the later seasons, thank you!
We know credit rolls can work in the digital world. I've also seen problems camera pans, too. In the analog world they're not jerky. You never know where the problem is occurring in the digital world. It could be a bandwidth problem with too many local TV sub-channels, or with Comcast. I know it's not my DVD recorder--those TBS Mama's Family recordings from around 2005 or 2006 look just fine.
stevea 08-16-2021, 09:59 PM But, back to the original show, the credit rolls on MeTV showings of The Honeymooners are AWFUL!
(Introducing yet another show) The Starz Encore Black showings of Diff'rent Strokes had the same credit roll issue. They must have noticed and got new masters, because the problem was eventually corrected.
Frank Gannucci 08-18-2021, 07:05 PM Cloggedmind said this about the number.
“For me, this one's case closed. All the facts are in order:
The episode's title was changed from "BEnsonhurst 3-7741" to "The Babysitter" before release, so we know the correction was made before transmission (and, of course, these weren't the "live" shows, so there was plenty of time for changes while they made 2 shows per week on that schedule).
The dubs were done with the original actors' voices (besides Gleason and Meadows), who would, likely, be difficult to rally together long after the production wrapped.
People always swore they heard the original number in tv repeats in the 70's. Well, this film was one of those at one point and, guess what? Still the revised number.
No one has ever produced a copy with "BEnsonhurst 3-7741" spoken in the episode.
And, the surviving negatives used for the remastered, hi-def release contain the altered soundtrack.
Done deal! I's satisfied!”
stevea 08-18-2021, 07:45 PM The Youtube link is a private video. I remember seeing all 39 episodes on those crummy quality 16mm that stations played and beat to death. What was the revised number?
Also what did that kid say that was so LOL? I didn't know Davy Crockett was so fat?
Frank Gannucci 08-18-2021, 08:52 PM It was originally Bensonhurst 3-7741.
Yes, that is what the kid said.
