Over the weekend, I overheard this TV commercial in the background for some law firm. They were advertising this class-action lawsuit scheme over something they want parents to believe is making their kids autistic.

So they announcer is saying something like "if you have a son or daughter who is autistic, and you believe it's due to (medical malpractice, vaccines, straws or whatever), and they'd tell you to call their toll-free phone number. And they repeated that phone number four times. By the third reading of that number, I was worried that they might do something obnoxious and end the commercial with some freaky visual effects and a sudden echo. Thankfully they didn't.

But can you imagine if the makers of that commercial would've stooped so low as to pull something like that? Imagine this; some mom is in her kitchen with her kids, one or more of them being autistic, and this commercial is playing nearby. She's probably not paying attention to the TV, and the kids are in there, just because it's something they have to put up with watching until something they want to see comes on. All of the sudden this autism lawsuit scam commercial comes on and ends with a massive distorted visual effect and a sharp echo, jolting the autistic kid's senses to the point where he or she feels like their flesh is being kneaded like dough or something. Not as bad as the original trailer for "Westworld," although that would obviously be worse.

Even worse than that, following the freaky special effects, you'd have this subliminal outline of Binky the Clown from the Garfield cartoon enterprise charging towards the screen looking like it's ready to burst out and grab whoever or whatever is outside the screen. Don't ask me how or why I thought of that part, let alone why the makers of some commercial would do anything as idiotic as that. But anyway, the moms would obviously think their kids were hallucinating if that happened, and it would cause more havoc for both the parents and the autistic kids.


God, I hope nothing like that ever happens.

Well, on the YouTube channel that was playing it, somebody posted about their fond memories of the 1972-73 WCBS Channel 2 kids show "The Patchwork Family," and how that song was used during commercial bumpers. A few people also talked about how they had a crush on the hostess, Carol Corbett, even when she was on the show with her own name on WPIX between 1965 and 1968, and used to introduce various cartoons played during the midday hours.

You would think that I, a Native New Yorker who was born after the baby boom, grew up in the tri-state area, and was familiar with the structure of local children's television programming would know who she is as well as the people who posted on that YouTube channel. After all, I'm familiar enough with people like Officer Joe Bolton and Captain Jack McCarthy. But alas, Ms. Corbett and her schtick on these shows have eluded my memories.

So rather than kick myself repeatedly for not knowing who this woman is, I decided to do some research. What I found was that before she was on WPIX, she was the Spring Queen at the 1963 New York International Flower Show. Most articles have said she was 21 at the time, so we can assume she was born in 1942.

Janice(her user name) was one of our moderators for many years. We all liked her so much! I think that that some health problems caused her to leave us. Not sure of the circumstances. Sometime in 1975 when I was home from school, either due to being sick or suspension, or whatever, I was watching a few game shows on TV in the late-morning. At some point, I saw a commercial for something, though I have no idea what product was being sold. But it took place at some picnic, where this family was setting up a blanket for the family on some hillside. The mom was some perky young woman who looked like something from about a decade earlier. I swear this girl had a flip hairdo, a big headband, a dress that looked like a red and white gingham tablecloth, and a demeanor that made some of the starlets of the 1960's seem sullen. And this scene wasn't necessarily supposed to be nostalgic either.

I wish I could find that commercial. Whatever they were trying to sell viewers, she awoke something in me. 1)She triggered some additional criteria about what attracts me to women, and 2)She made me realize that I haven't seen women who looked like her in a long time.

You get bent out of shape when someone makes a joke about (e.g.) grape seed extract, but you're sure it's OK to throw some snark at other posters.

I would think you are a better fit with the seniors group. You probably share similiar interests with them. You can better relate to them. I have noticed you still occasionally get your hands slapped and get pushed back on there.

Living outside of Pgh, we had a great diner not far from my town and what a treat to go there. Growing up in my era, eating out was an Extreme luxury.....extreme.....those post great depression days we were glad to have potatos and pasta at home...

So far I have never had any of these fakes charged to me. I have also been getting a lot of scam emails about my Netflix account being cancelled. I just ignore them.

My mum, I miss her so damn much

I know. It's sad and hard to lose a Mother. Mine passed away 10 years ago and I still miss her ! :(

We gals and our hair do;s and color jobs, working for about 40 yrs my hair and clothes were tip top and I had frosting a LOT of my years, never did the heavy color changes but since retired and my hair is not #1 in my life, I have let it go grey and wear almost a crew cut, it's fine and cute and EASY... my hair cutter comes to me every 2 months or so, goal is SHORT.....
