I disagree with "The Ropers" being #49. Of the two episodes I've seen, they're quite good. "The Flying Nun" and "Hogan's Heroes" are both GREAT shows IMO. You can see an article on this at http://tv.yahoo.com/news/va/20020712/102653539800.html

I can't believe that! Those people at TV Guide are MORONS!
I mean really, Tom Green is better than HH? You're in the Picture?? It lasted ONE episode! UGH...... @$#%$
dawsongirl 07-12-2002, 10:52 PM I think I'll cancel my TV Guide subscription.
ZeldaGilroy 07-12-2002, 11:00 PM What do they know???? I loved Still The Beaver and The Flying Nun! And where do they come off picking on a little kid's show like Barney and Friends. Preschoolers learn everything from colors and shapes to good manners by watching that show. They should just keep their opinions on such matters to themselves!

Brian 07-12-2002, 11:29 PM I'm not surprised that Jerry Springer made it to #1 but why on Earth would they put Manimal and The Flying Nun on that list?

Sean Snow 07-12-2002, 11:50 PM Ugh I was watching CNN Headline News and they were talking about this and they had one of the people from TV Guide on there. The woman asked her why so many well rated shows are near the top. THe woman says because we're couch potatos......
*SLAPS WOMAN FROM TV GUIDE*
sorry I just had to do that to avenge Hogan, Nun, and Ropers.
Will and Grace Fanatic 07-13-2002, 01:33 AM I've never heard of most of those shows on the list. But I disagree with the Tom Green show being one of the worst. That show cracked me up everytime.
FactsofLifeRulz 07-13-2002, 02:11 AM Tom Green is one of my favorite shows of all time!! (FOL=#1)
Ugh that list sux.
James 07-13-2002, 02:45 AM The only ones with which I disagree are #4 "The Brady Bunch Hour" and #39 "Still The Beaver" (any relation to "The New Leave It To Beaver"? I thought "Still The Beaver" was the movie that led to the NLITB series, like "The Brady Girls Get Married" led to "The Brady Brides" back in 1981.).
I'm surprised "WWE (formerly WWF) Smackdown!" (UPN, 1999-present), "The Family Guy" (Fox, 1999-2002), "Beverly Hills, 90210" (Fox, 1990-2000), and "Married ... with Children" (Fox, 1987-1997) did not make the list, along with some other MTV shows.
APPLEI 07-13-2002, 02:49 AM I HAVE A FEW DISAGREMENTS WITH THAT LIST, MAYBE THREE DISAGREMENTS WITH THAT LIST!
1)HELLO LARRY DOES'NT DESERVE TOO BE ON THAT LIST!
THE SCRIPTS WERE AVERAGE RUN OF THE MILL BUT THE CAST WAS VERY GOOD! I WOULD SAY ABOVE AVERAGE ESPECIALLY RIM RICHARDS AND JOANNA GLEESON!
I HAVE 26 EPISODES ON VIDEOTAPE
I THINK "9 TO 5" THE TV SERIES SHOULD BE IN ITS PLACE WITH IT'S MANY CAST AND FORMATS CHANGES INCLUDING SWITCHING FROM FILM TO VIDEO TAPE!
A TV SERIES THAT DESERVES TO BE ON THAT LIST
VERY UNENTERTAINING SHOULD'NT HAVE BEEN MADE INTO A TV SERIES
2)HOWARD STERN(NO.29 ON THAT LIST) IS THE GREATEST SATIRIST OF THIS GENERATION!
BUT,I THINK "USA TODAY THE TV SERIES" SHOULD BE IN ITS PLACE.IT WAS LIKE SESAME STREET FOR ADULTS,SO CONDENSCENDING! AND NOT VERY INFORMING OR ENTERTAINING EVEN THOUGH IT TRIED TO BE.
MY THIRD DISAGREMENT IS "THE FLYING NUN"
YES ITS FARFETCHED BUT USUALLY ENTERTAINING
I THINK "PRIVATE BENJAMIN" ANOTHER GREAT ARGUMENT
FOR A MOTION PICTURE NOT BECOMING A TV SERIES ! SHOULD BE IN ITS PLACE.
AS FAR THE ROPERS ARE CONCERNED THAT SHOW WAS OK,BUT IT WAS LIKE FRED AND ETHEL MERTZ SPINING OFF FROM THE "I LOVE LUCY SHOW" TO FORM THEIR OWN SITCOM,IT WOULD'NT HAVE WORKED.
IN ITS PLACE I WOULD PUT "SAVED BY THE BELL,THE COLLEGE YEARS" YES, IT SHOULD BE ON ANY WORST 50 TV SHOWS OF ALLTIME LIST!
THATS MY OPINION
WHATS YOURS

Manimal?
Are you feeling okay?
mamamiasweetpeaches 07-13-2002, 09:36 AM I scrolled the list to make sure She's The Sherriff was on there...and it was!!!! That is the worst show I've ever seen!!!!
mamamiasweetpeaches 07-13-2002, 09:39 AM If Jerry Springer is on there, than the Richard Bey show should be on there too!!!!!!

Right on!
Hogan's Heroes doesn't deserve to be on this list, considering they left of quite a few clunkers from FOX's early years...
Anyone remember "Women In Prison?"
Yeesh....
Attmay 07-13-2002, 10:29 AM Not much of a list, but then TV Guide is not much of a magazine, considering they put Friends on their top 50 list over some shows that are actually good. Friends belongs at the very top of any credible list of bad TV shows.
And it's one thing not to like a certain show, but criticizing those who do crosses the line.
joan davis fan 07-13-2002, 11:19 AM The PTL Club with Jim & Tammy Faye Bakker is on this list? To me thats a bit unfair. True what Bakker did was wrong ( though I thought his time in jail was a bit much consider I have heard about drunk drivers who were less sentenced) and Tammy Faye can be hard to take at times but to put any religious how on a list of bad television shows, to me it just doesnt seem right. After all people do worship God in their own way.
At my house I can pick up a low powered religious station and they have a program where the host often goes around jumping ( enough to shake the at times out of focus camera , well actually it must be a camcorder ) and speaking in tounges. True the quality is not the greatest and I myself dont understand the practice of speaking in tounges but still I wouldnt put that on a list of "bad shows".
Carmen_Epstein 07-13-2002, 12:15 PM I think they should have left it up to us, the TV viewers.
ClassicComedyFan2 07-13-2002, 12:50 PM 2. My Mother The Car (NBC, 1965-66) - Come on. This was really funny with a good concept and good cast.
4. The Brady Bunch Hour (ABC, 1977) - This one was funny and good variety hour, IMO.
5. Hogan's Heroes (CBS, 1965-71) - WHAT? This show is hilarious!
7. AfterMASH (CBS, 1983-84) - An underrated spinoff.
10. Hee Haw Honeys (syndicated, 1978-79) - Hee-Haw was hilarious and I bet this was too.
12. Hello Larry (NBC, 1979-80) - Never seen it, but transcripts I read indicate humor. DS crossovers also seem funny.
13. Twenty-One (NBC, 1956-58) - A good gameshow, judging from the 2001 remake.
14. Baby Bob (CBS, 2002-present) - This show was funny too.
26. Life with Lucy (ABC, 1986) - Lucy is always funny. Not as funny as any of her previous shows, but still amusing, nonetheless. (Only seen 1 ep, however)
39. Still the Beaver (Disney Channel, 1985-86) - And then TBS 86-90, but a great spinoff of a great show.
42. The Flying Nun (ABC, 1967-70) - I like this show alot too! Surprised to see it here.
46. Me and the Chimp (CBS, 1972) - Actually sounds like a very funny concept.
49. The Ropers (ABC, 1979-80) - They were funny on TC, I bet they were here too.
50. Barney & Friends (PBS, 1992-present) - Works for the audience it is targeting.
I guess I'll have to make my own list of bad TV shows...:)
*Melissa* 07-13-2002, 01:45 PM Hogan's Heroes?!!! Especially that high up on the list? You've got to be kidding me!!!

I disagree the reason that Friends is on the list of best shows is because it has been a top rated show since it's debut, it's been in the top 10 its whole run. It's not the number 1 show because it a bad show.
That list stinks. Just like all of TVGuide's lists.
"Hogan's Heroes" rox! I watch ti sometimes on my independant station (more lately because the new Beat the Geeks host is dumb). "The Flying Nun" is one of the most funniest, most creative sitcoms ever in the world. "The Ropers" is a hilarious show, even tho I only seen two episodes. I'm gonna quickly support my Nun tho! (searches for Nun logo)
I think they are just picking on shows that had bizarre plots. I mean...they think "You're in the Picture" is better than Hogan's Heroes?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!??!!?!?!?!?!?!?!??!!?
Let me give you a touch of what "You're in the Picture" was:
From what Ive read, what the game was, was you had to stick your head through oneof those cut out things and you had to guess who your head was on. When the second episode was supposed to air, the host of the show (Jackie Gleason) actually apoligized to the audience for how lame the show was.
Hogna's Heroes on the other hand lasted for a sucessful 6 seasons.
IheartMoonlighting 07-13-2002, 05:25 PM You guys, it's all about selling more issues of TvGuide. Why else do you think they put shows on that people actual loved. Out of 50 odd some years of progamming, i'm sure they could come up with a better worst tv shows ever list. but they didn't because if they only put shows on there that people hate, they wouldn't sell any issues.

That's a good idea.
I am shocked that classic shows like Hogan's Heros is on the list. But I Baby Bob should be on the list. But if you put that on the list you should the Look Who's Talking clone show with Julia Duffy (I fogot the name) on the list.
Brian 07-13-2002, 09:33 PM How was Life with Lucy bad? I've never seen it.

That show was called "Baby Talk" and from what I have read and heard, that was very bad. I've never seen it though and I hope it doesn't come on TV if everybody hates it.

The jokes were lame, it seemed like everyone was yelling, and the things Lucy was doing should not ever have been done by a 70-something year old woman. They were trying to make her 30 again.
I'm surprised TV Guide didnt have Alan Thicke's attempt to beat Johnny Carson "Thicke of the Night" listed. That show was so bad it was one of the few shows to receive a "zero" rating in some major markets ( Philadelphia and Baltimore are two I remember ).
Even Thicke himself has said he fainted when he saw their first show.
Also surprised that Pat Sajak, Magic Johnson ( The Magic Hour )
and Morton Downey Jr, their talk shows didnt make it either.
Though I myself enjoy watching it I do have to admit this is the first list of "bad tv shows" that I have seen over the years that failed to mention Mama's Family. For some reason many times that show ends up on the "worst" list.
Mama would've been proud of TV Guide !!
DandR 07-14-2002, 04:22 AM How come Teletubbies didn't make their list? Barney is sappy, but watchable.
mamamiasweetpeaches 07-14-2002, 08:34 AM I want to agree with that last post. Maybe Barney is sweet but at least he has some "Nutritional value"...he teaches manners, life lessons, how to get along in harmony...While the Teletubbies are just incoherent eye-candy.
ChickenLegz 07-14-2002, 10:37 AM The Brady Bunch should have been on that list somewhere .

I do not understand how you can list a show like Hogan's Heroes
(a show that's run for 6 years) In the 50 worst tv shows of all time. It 's one of the,if not best sitcom on TV. The fact that it ran
for so many years ought to tell you something. The fact TV Guide had so many covers and stories on the cast, makes no sense as to why it made the list. Whats wrong with you guys!

I disagree with you a 100 percent. Friends is probably won of the better shows ever. Theres so much worse crap than friends. The actors are great, the writing is funny & the plots are funny. Its going to be a classic sitcom on Nick at nite in 15 years from now and you know it. Its been the top rated shows in very season. More people watch it then alot of shows like "Brady Bunch". I would've said Brady Bunch,King of the Hill & Gillians Island was on the list.
"Hogan's Heroes" at #5? That's a load of garbage!!!
I read the Yahoo article about TV Guide's choices and it mentioned that the show is considered politically incorrect with the way it depicts the Germans and Nazis during WWII---and yet that's what makes it so funny!! Can't you see the point, people? I feel so bad for Dawsongirl. You can let the TV Guide people know how you feel by going to their website and click on "Contact Us" and give them a solid piece of your mind. Tell them Cpl. Klink sent you!
Tracy 07-23-2002, 01:59 PM Who is the heck wrote the 50 worst show list that TV Guide had? Hogan's Hero had no business on the list. I am glad that I have a bad tv web site geocities.com/badtelevision that has truly bad shows on it.
Brian Damage 07-23-2002, 02:58 PM How can you have Baywatch and not Baywatch Nights on the same list??? I mean David Hasselhoff moonlighting as a private eye?
Impressions 07-23-2002, 07:49 PM I just going ignore the list, What list? I didn't see a list!Lol, Really that list is just for publicty. It dosen't make any sense to me, I didn't see why they put that list in the first place they're just trying to make us mad.
Why does the list not include Joanie Loves Chachi, Charles in Charge, Fish, Flo, The Tortellis, and Benson?

Life With Lucy wasn't all that bad. It had its moments but every sitcom does. I find this show to be kind of heartwarming because all of the characters seemed so close to each other (even Lucy and Curtis) and they were concerned for one another.
And it was nice to see Lucille Ball playing a grandmother because almost all grandmothers are really sweet and full of love. The first episode of the series was really good! You should see it!
:)

Why in the world would those shows be on the list? Hogans' Heroes is one of the best shows ever! And, the brady Bunch isn't a bad show, either. It's kind of funny how TV Guide thinks that the shows that they think are the worst are the shows most people like.
Brian Damage 07-24-2002, 06:24 PM I don't think just one person chose the worst 50 of all time. I think they took a poll and the shows that recieved the most votes were listed.
As far as The Brady Bunch Hour being chosen, keep in mind it's not the sitcom they chose, it was their variety show that was. On that show, they didn't even use the real Jan Brady.
TheLurkerKing 07-26-2002, 04:40 PM Even, if I agree that all those shows listed are the 50 worst shows of all time, and I don't, I think "TV Guide" has forgotten something. Some of the best episodes of all time come from the worst shows. For example . . .
39. "Still the Beaver" The episode where they threw away something important in the recycling bin, so they had to go out to the recycling center to retrieve it. So, there they were, running all around the recycling center, and because it was Halloween, they were all running around the recycling center in their Halloween costumes. Too, too funny.
5. "Hogan's Heroes" The episode w/ Hans Conreid as the Italian army officer, who they were trying to bribe to come to the side of the Allies by feeding him pizza. Of course, no one in the camp had a recipe for pizza, so they had to radio London for the recipe. And all the misunderstandings that ensued. Another too, too funny episode.
2. "My Mother, the Car" The episode where My Mother, the Car has to meet Sonny Tufts at the Sonny Tufts film festival at the drive-in no matter what happened. One of the funniest episodes I have ever seen on television.
Here are the other programs that I enjoyed, in the order which they were listed by "TV Guide."
42. "The Flying Nun"
34. "Alexander the Great," where else could you see Captain Kirk (William Shatner) and Batman (Adam West) on the same show.
30. "Unhappily Ever After" Actually, I liked this one much better then "Married . . . with Children."
And 12. "Hello, Larry."
Enjoy!
17Mar59 07-26-2002, 10:05 PM I totally agree with everyone who says that this list is totally
moronic.
I notice that outside of Baywatch there weren't too many dramas
on the list and certainly no if any Soaps,so wonder if there was
a prejudice against certain shows simply because they were sitcoms.
Cheersaddict123 07-26-2002, 11:05 PM [QUOTE]I don't think just one person chose the worst 50 of all time. I think they took a poll and the shows that recieved the most votes were listed.
It's really hard to believe that people voted for "Hogan's heroes" as one of the worst shwos ever. But really they should ask tv critics and television experts on their opinions. "3's a crowd" should be on there. I never really thought that show was funny.
Married.... with children has to be on there, too many sex cracks to last me a lifetime.
Jerry springer... well deep down. Didnt we all know.

They did it using critics..at lesat that's how they usually do it. There are a lot of terrible dramas and soap operas that I feel should've been head of some of the sitcoms. I feel TV Guide should do an online poll for the worst shows of all time. It would make it a lot more like people's views. I doubt the public would rank Hogan's Heroes so high.
JMFabiano524 08-11-2002, 08:20 AM Based on the Top 50s that have come from TVG, I wouldn't lend much credence to their opinion. I've read their so-called "best ever" lists, and all it is are some token nods to classic shows while kissing the butts of whatever's popular/"cool" now. Now I really don't watch much "current" TV, so I don't know what's actually good. But I do know that the newer shows aren't Top 10 or even Top 5 Great.
And for the record, here are shows I would have added. I will go one further, however, and include revivals of older shows and shows when they "jumped the shark." For example, where was....
- The Brothers Grunt (Still my pick for the worst animated series ever)
- The Bradys (And TVG says Still the Beaver was too depressing for them, yet
omits a DRAMA about the Brady Bunch?!!?)
- Card Sharks 2001
- Match Game '98
- Extreme Gong (and you thought the original Gong Show was tasteless. Plus I
don't think Chuck Barris ever went out of his way to insult the viewers who
didn't like his show)
- DJ Games
- Happy Days: The Ted McGinley Era
- Laverne...Where's Shirley?
- Sesame Street (1999 and up)
- Scooby-Doo: The Shaggy, Scooby, and Scrappy Era
- Are You Being Served Again (aka Grace and Favour. Basically an AYBS?
reunion series...without the department store, with a stupid countryside
hotel setting, and no strong Mr. Lucas-like foil to Mrs. Slocombe)
- Family Matters (mostly when the stories got all far fetched with the Urkel
alter egos. It wasn't great before, but at this point it wasn't even worthy
of being a guilty pleasure)
- Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman (Yeah, turn Supes into a
stupid soap opera done by people who seemed to have never read the comics in
their lives and only wanted to create new drama hunks/babes for people who
like that sort of thing to fawn over. And where were the super villains?!!?
There's a reason why the 1966 Batman, as corny as it was, was light years
better)

Those were a giant pile of crap.
Sitcomwriter 08-14-2002, 10:19 AM I agree with MOST of them (Tom Green,Manimal, etc.) but some are surprises ("Homeboys in Outer Space"? Am I the only one who liked that show?)
Fleet 09-07-2002, 10:51 PM I am surprised (and pleased) that TV Guide did not include "Gilligan's Island" in their 50 worst shows list. Maybe critics are finally realizing that GI was better than they gave it credit for. At least they had the common sense not to put that in their list. In place of "The Ropers," I would substitute "Soap"... dumb show!
