View Full Version : Was Florida too old for James?
GoldenTV 01-25-2021, 10:47 PM I know James and Florida had good chemistry together on Good Times, but sometimes notion doesn't escape me that James might have been too young to be married to Ester.
I mean even if we look at both of them physically, they seem like odd couple. James having an excellent physic (no big belly :D) and being good looking, he probably could have his pick of any women he wanted to marry. Florida is not a bad looking women, but she doesn't match up with James in term of look or body.
Ester was 19 years older than James, and it does show. Given the cast members of GoodTimes, Carl (from 4th season) might have better match for Florida as a husband. And Willona a better match for James as a wife.

This is a very common theme with respect to Lear and his casting of African American actors and actresses. Sherman Hemsley was 36 and Isabel Sanford was 57 when The Jeffersons started. Redd Foxx was only 51 when Sanford and Son started (Fred Sanford was 65), Grady (Whitman Mayo) was about 42 when the show started. Jimmy Walker was only a few months shy of his 27th birthday when Good Times started, John Amos is less than 8 years older than Walker.

Wow! Isabel Sanford was a good looking 57, she looked a lot younger than that ! She and Sherman looked around the same age ! ;)
TVLegend 01-26-2021, 06:10 PM You could easily see that Florida looked at least ten years older than James in some scenes.

That’s because
George acted a lot older than he really was in real
They most likely put some makeup on Sherman Hemsley and made his hair gray
Isabel Sanford didn’t look too bad for 57

I thought he was 55 when I discovered the jeffersons as a 14 year old:lol:
TVFactFan 01-26-2021, 09:27 PM Yes she made a better match with Henry Evans

Henry Evans from Maude or James’s father Henry Evans?

Grandfather
BTW: I always fantasized about george jefferson meeting florida:lol:

The only thing I could picture Florida saying to George is
“If you don’t stop talkin like that I’m gonna warm your butt up”
What about James and Weezy Jefferson? I could picture them kissing.
Janice Johnson 01-27-2021, 04:36 AM The REALLY weird thing is, James is OLDER than Florida by like four years....

And even weirder is that on 'Maude' her husband DID have grey hair but somehow he seemed to have swum laps in a Fountain of Youth between Tuckahoe and Chicago (in addition to having his name changed).

They made him look older on maude since he was Florida's husband and for some reason on GT they made him look younger

Well all I know is that Wilona sure didn’t look Florida’s age in the last two seasons.

Florida's girlfriend should have been wanda and her husband should have been carl or henry:lol:

You mean you didn’t like Wilona? I mean sure, she looked pretty younger than Florida but she was enjoyable at times. Wanda looked a little too old to be Florida’s girlfriend. Florida looked late forties and Wanda looked mid-to-late sixties. Now Carl and Florida or Henry and Florida looked the same age but if her husband wasn’t James it would take away from the show’s whole first three seasons.

Ja'net DuBois (Willona) has some interesting history in this space. When she passed away it was reported she was 74 but public records indicate she was 87. There was a thread on this last year.

I don’t believe it. You mean to tell me Wilona from seasons 5 and 6 was in her forties? Ain’t no way.

wanda and florida looked like they was more the same age. Willona looked too young

I know it's hard to believe. Check out the thread from last February (I think it is from 2/20/20). TMC provides a link to the document (her D.O.B is 8/5/32).
TheLittleFaerie 06-04-2021, 06:46 AM If they love each other, why should it matter? There were 20 years between my aunt and uncle

Florida was good looking but the idea of James being head over hills in love with Florida and attracted to her body to that extent was kinda unconvincing

The Guy who played his father was a better match for her
DEH55 06-06-2021, 02:10 PM John Amos looked older than he was because he was losing his hair. I never bought that James would find Florida hotstuff but they still made a good couple.

please stop, I’m about to wet my pants from so much laughter

The man who played henry looked more believable as her husband
TVLegend 06-06-2021, 06:00 PM The man who played henry looked more believable as her husband
I can picture it all right now
James, in a raspy, chain smoking voice:
Florida, baby, I’m home
Sorry, that’s just comical
Janice Johnson 06-08-2021, 01:18 AM The man who played henry looked more believable as her husband
I also think that, especially since the man who played Henry was only about 2 years older than Esther. :)
I always assumed that John Amos was like the case with Sherman Hemsley on The Jeffersons, was supposed to be playing a man who was much older than his actual age at the time. It kind of reminds me of the film Boyz 'N the 'Hood, where Lawrence Fishburne was reasonably able to get away with playing Cuba Gooding Jr.'s father even though in reality, they aren't that far apart in age (as was the case with John and Jimmie Walker). It's just that Amos and Fishburne were able to project an air of maturity in their roles.
