View Full Version : The year you started watching Facts
FOL-FAN-ITA 01-08-2021, 05:55 PM I started watching TFOL about 10 years ago. I don't remember the exact year, 2009 if I'm correct. How did you discover the show? I was watching DS and Mrs. Garrett was my favorite character. Then Adelaide came on the show and I found out Charlotte Rae left for a spin off based on her character.
Lorimar Television 01-08-2021, 05:57 PM The year it came to Nick at Nite so 2000 I believe.

Nick at Night gave the wrong impression of the show. They banned so many episodes and cut out parts of others.

Interesting! 21 years ago
1979, the premier
Wow, you started from the pilot, nice

I agree. I watched some later seasons episodes on Dailymotion and I was surprised, they cut out so many scenes.

You’re right, they only showed HALF of season 1!

At least they showed half season. Here in Italy they always skip season 1 and start with Double Standard

:lol: The problem is: they skip The New Girl too
But here in Italy season 5 is the least popular.
I don't know why they never show season 1.
I don't hate the first year, not a huge fan but I enjoy s1 for what it is and I love several episodes like I.Q., The Return of Mr. Garrett
Torgo 01-08-2021, 08:02 PM I don't know if this is the first time I ever watched the show, but I remember watching the episode The Last Drive In when it originally aired in 1985 (I was 15)

Yeah, I noticed you said DS and not TNG. That is strange.

Probably just to keep things more "uniform" I guess. One less "era" to show, lol.

I thought you were exaggerating, but I went through my FOL tapes and saw I had recorded the missing episodes N@N didn't air from Hallmark. Which brings me to this one important question; when did Hallmark air The Facts of Life? I thought I had already left California when the channel was airing the show. Once I moved to the state I'm currently in, I stopped recording altogether. Hallmark had to have aired this show before 2006 for me to have them. I didn't know N@N didn't air all of season 1. It's been a while since N@N had the show.
I did find something I forgot I had. I used to cut out TV Guide advertisements and paste them on my VHS covers. I did it with Buffy every week a new episode was advertised. I forgot I cut out the close up ad for the reunion movie of the FOL. I have the original broadcast airing recorded. I must have used the tape to record the Christmas episodes the following month since I pasted the TV Guide descriptions on the cover as well. This tape is.... well it's not important how old it is  But back to the point it's cool finding these treasures you forget you have :)
Christopher 01-08-2021, 08:48 PM Our Christopher would enjoy living in Italy!
Not necessarily :p I have no problem with season 1 airing. Just because it's not my cup of tea doesn't mean it shouldn't air.
I have no clue when I started watching FOL. It's possible I started in the late 80's on local channels because I remember watching one of the Eastland Jo episodes with my great grandmother. When USA started airing the show back in the early 90's, that's when I really became the huge fan I am now. It's a fun show that I enjoy and stuck with wherever it aired. Now that I have the series set, I watch whenever I want and whichever episode I'd like to see. It's a lot better now watching the show than back on syndication :)

Oh yeah, Hallmark definitely aired FOL before 2006. I know because I moved very early in 2004, and it was airing on on Hallmark some time before I moved. I remember watching it in my computer room at that old place. It was sometime between 2001 and 2003.

Oh wow, how very cool to find that! :) And neat to see "Christopher handwriting". An authentic touch!
My favorite part is how it says "The Facts of Life" - Comedy - Jo can't go home for Christmas.
'80sSitcoms 01-09-2021, 12:40 AM I started watching as a very small boy in the early 1980s at my "Sue Ann grandparents" (I grew up in the country just like Sue Ann and the Weaver family, and this set of grandparents lived just a mile from us behind the cow pastures and the woods). Being in my critical formative years, Mrs. Grandmother became my 3rd grandmother through the TV and those 8 girls became 8 more older sisters besides the one that was already in my family. They cemented themselves into my cultural DNA in my childhood and are truly a part of me. Hence why I am the super-huge fan I am today and always will be.
Here's a vintage photo of Gran & Pop's den where I spent so many hours in those precious formative years watching television on that big floor console TV while Dad was on the farm and Mom was in her office. This photo looks to be circa 1989/1990-ish. But with all the quaint touches it "looks" much older than that, lol. This is where I became family with Mrs. Garrett and "our girls".

Because season 5 had poor ratings when it originally aired here. That's why they stopped dubbing the show in Italian.

"That's a little better"
RetroGuy2000 01-09-2021, 07:56 AM I probably started watching The Facts of Life in 1979-1980. NOT the episodes that aired against Fantasy Island (because my mom wouldn't have missed that), but any episodes that aired after Diff'rent Strokes.
It wasn't until Summer 1983 that I started watching the show regularly. NBC had begun airing the reruns in the mornings. My sister and I LOVED the show. The characters were funny and the lessons we learned were important. We were so confused, though. My favorite characters appeared only on the morning episodes, not the evening episodes. We did not understand why. We watched those episodes while sitting or laying on the floor of my grandparents' living room, on a TV very similar to the one '80sSitcoms posted a photo of: an old, giant console.
A measure of how big the show was in our lives is that my sister got a little red raincoat to be just like Tootie in "Flash Flood".
We watched the 1983-1988 episodes every week. When Andy joined the show, I was excited. He was only 1-2 years older than me, so he was someone to look up to, lol.
I later became an educator, and I'm sure I was influenced by FOL and other 1980s shows which demonstrated the value of a good education. FOL was definitely an inspiration.
I watched the Nick at Nite evening reruns in the 1990s, and also some of the early morning FOL reruns on USA. I watched the Anniversary interview USA aired in... 1999? Nick at Nite had hilarious advertisements for FOL, including the Blair-Tootie Project, the Yearbook ads, and of course the Molly Ringwald is Lost commercial... Sure wish I had recorded that gem!
I watched the E! True Hollywood Story when it aired (1999?) And taped it on VHS. Getting the explanation of what happened to the Lost Girls in that documentary really helped! I must have worn that tape out.
I caught many other FOL documentaries over the years. Later, YouTube helped fill in the gaps. I didn't see the Reunion when it originally aired.
I visited this site and the forum occasionally, and lurked a bit, but did not register for many years.
Circa 2014, my sister spotted the 1st and 2nd season DVD of FOL in a bargain bin at the video store, and we HAD to get it! Getting the Lost Girls' interviews helped fill in the gaps.
BigManMike 01-09-2021, 12:23 PM I first discovered it and start watching when Nick at Nite started airing it in 2000. I was 9 years old in fourth grade at the time. Hallmark aired it only a short time from July 2002-early November 2002 for those wondering.

Did you make any connecton with Jo at all? I grew up in the country and found it difficult to idenify with Jo.

That sounds so "against character" for you, to find a form dedicated to FOL and not jump right in to question/discuss. Unless, of course, you saw it when it was ruled by The Nancy McKeon Fan Brigade.

Well I just connected with the older girls as "big sisters", since I had one. I really connected with Tootie a LOT because we were both the youngest.
But my first FOL love, Cindy, I connected with immediately because we were both out of step in our genders. She was SO into sports and athletics, and I, a boy, was not. She was ostracized for liking "boy things", and I felt different because I didn't like those "boy things" (and still don't). So that out-of-stepness cemented my connecting with her immediately from that very first episode, where we got to spend time with her and know her. :loveya:

I had a similar experience. I am not a "traditional" man, that's why Cindy is my favorite Lost Girl, she isn't a traditional girl.

You can see what it was like by looking at what this board looked like 20 years ago (those posts still exist). For some reason, the Facts of Life had a big fan base of preteens, tweens, and teens 20 years ago. Some were not even born yet when the show aired it's last episode. Jo and Blair were the most popular, but there was lots of flame wars developed between the Blair and Jo camps.
If any of those people are still active on Sitcomonline.com, they will be in their 30s and 40s now. Hopefully they matured.
You also can see the push back Nancy McKeon got when she didn't do the 2001 reunion.
Impressions 01-10-2021, 11:49 AM I saw the reruns around 2000-2001 on Nick at Nite. I think the first episode I saw was "Flash Flood." Then I joined the boards around the time that it started airing on Hallmark. So I became an avid fan and taped every episode.

valentina warner 01-10-2021, 03:40 PM The first time i watched FOL was by pure coincidence!
The year was 2011, and my dad (who lives in New York) had sent me a copy of 'People Magazine, celebrate the 80s', and while i was flipping it an image caught my eye:
I noticed CHARLOTTE RAE surrounded by 4 girls (the 'Core of 4') and i said to myself "what's the DS housekeeper from the DRUMMONDS doing in another show?"
I actually grew up watching DS and had never heard of FOL, so this was a surprise for me!
Interesting enough, the other person in the picture that caught my eyes was BLAIR WARNER! When i saw this immaculate blond girl smiling as if she was on a Colgate advert, i thought to myself "This girl is probably the snobbish daddy's girl, but there is definitely more to her than meets the eye!"
Feeling intrigued, i decided to buy the 'Combo season 1 & 2' and was delighted to see BLAIR as the main girl, but i was also confused: where was the dark haired girl with the pony tail?
For some reason, i knew instantly that JO would become BLAIR's foil just by looking at the picture from People's magazine: one was the poor girl, and the other one the rich!
As soon as the DVD's arrived and i watched the very first episode 'Rough Housing', i couldn't help feeling some sympathy towards BLAIR (even though she had been mean and catty to CINDY): here she was, getting the lecture of her life by her soon to become her surrogate mother and confidante MRS G, and yet she she seemed so remorseful and ashamed by her behaviour.
I knew then, that BLAIR had a 'heart of gold' deep inside her,and the way our 'feisty red haired' was handling her was powerful and heartbreaking!
I found myself holding my breath the whole time, and i was finally pleased to see both MRS G and BLAIR break the ice on the final scene, when our 'golden haired girl' makes up with CINDY!
I was also very surprised to see CHARLOTTE RAE play such a serious topic: up until then, i had only seeing her on DS where she was rather comical most of the time!
I also got the first DS season 1 at the same time, and when i finally got to the last episode 'The girls school', i was speechless to see BLAIR: what was the snobbish/bad girl from FOL doing there, and why was she so rude to MRS G?
Needless to say, i was immediately captivated by BLAIR's dynamic with our 'feisty red haired' (KIMBERLY's housekeeper then) and i said to myself,
"There we have another episode with those 2 interacting!" (except that on the Pilot, BLAIR was really rebellious and quite disrespectful towards MRS G, unlike on FOL where she was just a tease and a self absorbed/spoiled girl who kept picking on CINDY and gets a stern reprimand from our 'feisty red haired'!)
So you guys see, this is how i discovered what would soon become to me, the favourite sitcom of all time!

Yeah, I was a pre-teen. Like 12 years old. Can't believe it's been almost 19 years on here.

Let's be fair. There's posts like that from season 1 fans now. One of the most recent was "Other than "The Little Chill" (which probably would win in a landslide), what was your favorite episode in the Beverly Ann Sickle era?" That didn't seem to be an issue for you and it's the exact same thing as your example. There's really no difference to how some of the season 1 fans are on here to how the Nancy fans were back then. This board is still just like it was 20 years ago only instead of the Nancy fanatics, it's the season 1 fanatics that have taken over. And as I pointed out earlier in this post, season 1 fans make assumptions for others just like the Nancy fanatics did 20 years ago. Both sides of the fandom act very much alike.
Christopher 01-12-2021, 11:45 AM Nancy's (McKeon) brigade, it must have been terrible
It's no terrible than how some of the season 1 fans are now. Everyone knows I'm not a huge fan of season 1. There was a member here last year doing episode reviews. He ended up enjoying season 1. One of the regular season 1 fans said I'm eating crow since this member liked season 1. Nancy fans back in the day were like that. They didn't like if someone hated Jo just like it bothers some season 1 fans if you don't like that season over the others. I can point out so many similarities between the season 1 fanatics behavior to the Nancy fanatics behavior. I've been here for 20 years so I've seen a lot on this board

I see what you are saying, but there are plenty of Nancy McKeon fans on other forums and on social media. They are quiiiiite welcome here, but until they are here, we should be free to discuss other things. You, too, are welcome to discuss other things, and plenty of people will participate. We can be inclusive, but we can't be inclusive of people who aren't here. I don't know... maybe there are some lurkers. But they have to post so we know they are here, right? JMHO.
80s Dude 01-12-2021, 01:16 PM It's no terrible than how some of the season 1 fans are now.
You don't see the flame wars from the early season fans now like you did between the Blair and Jo fans back then.
80s Dude 01-12-2021, 01:17 PM I just posted something from Nancy M. yesterday. It was a very interesting interview and both She and Mindy had new things to say about the show.

And 20 years ago, that was so heavy. There were other discussions, yes, but they were in the minority. So it's nice to see this charter season and these charter girls get their day in the cyber sun. :)

I'm not saying we should only discuss Nancy McKeon. That was a lot of fan's favorite part of the show back in the day. They're part of the FOL fandom just like any of us with different interests of the show. This show has tons of fans that like different aspects. Some like season 1, some like the early years, some like the friendship of the core 4, some like only the later years, some like Pippa, and etc. When I see members here take shots complaining about the Nancy fanatics and one saying he hopes they're mature, well what's your guy's excuse for how you act like them now about season 1? Some of the Nancy fanatics were nice. Not all of them were bad. They had a specific liking and that is their right just like it's your guy's right to love season 1 and go crazy about here. I think the main difference though is that you guy's are still fans when I doubt most of the Nancy fans from 20 years ago even like FOL today. Nancy is a Molly who disrespected her fanbase from the show that gave them their start. I would be surprise if the Nancy fanatics from 20 years ago are still huge fans of hers.
FOL-FAN-ITA 01-12-2021, 04:35 PM It's true that there are more season 1 fans now than in the past and that many topics are about the Lost Girls. You know I'm not crazy about season 1, I'm not a hater, I just enjoy it the way it is. Without the retooling, we probably wouldn't have had other seasons. Don't get me wrong guys, we can argue the decision was right or wrong, we can't say right or wrong, we can only say it was that decision that kept the show alive for its remaining 8 years, sadly this is showbusiness. It must not have been easy for those poor girls, I feel very bad for them. The season 1 format, with some changes, could have survived but the producers took the other way.
More or less, we enjoy every season.
We can not have the same opinions but we respect and love each other, if you're a Kelly or Pippa or Molly fan. I do see the parallels.
The difference between Nancy M and Molly is that Molly had a bad experience. Sure, she should have let it go decades earlier, but she was so young when it happened.
Nancy distanced herself from FOL for over 30 years: she was there to pick up awards (the TV Land Awards, the Paleyfest honor, etc), but she so rarely granted interviews. I understood this when she was doing The Division and other shows, but she hasn't done significant acting work since 2011. I can see why a lot of her huge fan base evaporated. Many fans definitely felt dissed.
I did love the Zoom call between Nancy and Mindy. She was so respectful of the work they had done together. She strikes me as much more humble than Molly, who wrote the world's most out of touch book since Joan Crawford's book. Many of the reviews from readers are scathing, most being a variation of, "This book is so pretentious. I can't relate to this book. I don't have a chauffeur." Molly is so much better than this, and it feels like such a huge disconnect from her social activism.
'80sSitcoms 01-12-2021, 11:31 PM Could you imagine if all of us have the same opinions on everything? It would be reaaaally boring .
I don't think it'd be boring. Think about it this way: It'd be great to see that everyone loves the same things about the show as you yourself do because then you're all celebrating the things you love and there's no fighting and arguments and no name-calling and no insulting. There's enough of that in the world outside of this forum.
I'm not saying differing opinions aren't good or valid. I'm just speaking from my experience of, for instance, one of my best friends who lives out of state. We have phone calls for hours where we dissect and examine and philosophize and analyze "Mama's Family", "The Carol Burnett Show", "ALF", "The Facts of Life", "Sesame Street", the Muppets, and many things we grew up with. And we have a wonderful friendship chemistry from loving the same things about all of those things and discussing them on a special level because we each know the other "gets" what we're saying or meaning. So we have hours of talking and laughing in wonderful interesting, fun friendship that's very meaty and interesting to us (not like how Blair says when she and her new friends just placidly "sit around agreeing with each other").

I don't talk about the topics season 1 tackled, you know I appreciate the Eastland years in general because each episode has a theme to discuss or a lesson to learn, something the later seasons remove from the show. IMHO, what killed the first season was the bad timeslot and the writing, and we see that in the Line Counts topic. Blair, Tootie and Sue Ann receive most of the attention and the other girls not. I always said that, even in past topics. I enjoy the first season for what it is, or I wouldn't be here, in the Line Counts topic and the discussions about the first year in general :)

We do see Blair, Tootie, an Sue Ann get most of the attention. Why is Blair the Harvest Queen, the one whose mother visits, the one who plagiarizes, the one who is almost date raped, the one who has the judge's number, the one who has Baryshnikov's home number, the one who rides a horse, AND the one who first gets into "The Group"? What kind of 15-year-old girl has this many things going on? Couldn't Nancy at least have had Baryshnikov's number? It wouldn't have changed much for Blair's lines, but it would have been an improvement for for Nancy.

It's not about feeling welcome. It's just respecting other fan's interest of the show. Remember when cfr was nervous about doing the episode reviews for season 1? He said it was because he didn't know if he would be a huge fan of it like the majority are here. That's exactly how it was for fans of FOL back in the Nancy fanatic days. If you shared a different opinion, you were nervous to say so because of backlash. Instead of being nervous, everyone should just respect what we like about the show and be glad this show at least has fans. I'm grateful this show had enough fans to get me a complete DVD release  There's still a couple of shows I would love to see release but sadly don't have the fanbase like this one.

Exactly. Lost girls fans love talking about their favorite season. It's nice the board is still active. We shouldn't be making remarks for what some fans like about the show.
Many fans definitely felt dissed.
I do. I like the Jo years better and Nancy was a great part of the show. Due to how she treated the show and wanted her character killed off for the reunion, it's like a slap in the face for being a fan. FOL and the Tracy Thurman Story are the only two projects of hers I like. The Division was hard to get in to for some reason.
I hope everything ended well, right guys? Are we still forum mates nice to each other?

I'm not trying to create any bad blood with someone. I'm just saying Nancy fanatics had their right to shine back in the day without being bashed just like season 1 fanatics have their right to shine without being bashed. And like Impressions, I was here back in the day for the Nancy fanatics. I remember some were really cool to talk with on other forums. There's a chit chat random board. Some of us used to go on there to talk about whatever. I remember one FOL fan and I took over a role playing game here one time. We made it so dramatic because we were Days of Our Lives fans as well  It was a lot of fun back then. Not all of it was bad and hostile.

I can see why an actor would want to move on from an old role to a new role. But Nancy said something like the only way they would get her into the Reunion movie is in a coffin (https://ew.com/article/2000/10/27/blair-warner/), according to Lisa. They ended up doing the Reunion without her, but tacked on a daughter who was just like her, rather than having the reunion at Jo's funeral.

'80sSitcoms 01-14-2021, 02:10 PM Well it doesn't appear that she ever said she "wanted Jo to d**". Apparently she just said the only way Jo would be there would be "in a coffin"; so not saying she "wants" Jo to d**, but just joking that that would be the only way Jo would attend.

'80sSitcoms 01-14-2021, 02:43 PM Speaking of dead bodies, I just thought of something last night: Since Molly Ringwald officially quit the show after TNGP2, what if they used Molly instead of Cynthia for "Breaking Point"? They wouldn't even have to show Molly, just talk about her and show photos, or maybe have the powers that be show clips if they wanted. What if this script idea came up and the producers said, "Well, Molly's left us, why don't we use her for the girl? The characters knew her, and so did some of the audience."
I'm sure glad they didn't, but just imagine if they'd considered it.

Yes, it was "I apologize for what I said". I think Nancy was a little disrespectful towards her fans. She could have said: "Sorry, I'm not interested". It's justifiable that you're looking for new roles but it was Jo that made you popular.
Anyway, did you see the photo I posted in Line Counts?
FOL-FAN-ITA 01-14-2021, 02:53 PM Speaking of dead bodies, I just thought of something last night: Since Molly Ringwald officially quit the show after TNGP2, what if they used Molly instead of Cynthia for "Breaking Point"? They wouldn't even have to show Molly, just talk about her and show photos, or maybe have the powers that be show clips if they wanted. What if this script idea came up and the producers said, "Well, Molly's left us, why don't we use her for the girl? The characters knew her, and so did some of the audience."
I'm sure glad they didn't, but just imagine if they'd considered it.
It could have been a great idea. A character the audience already knew. And they could have used Miss Mahoney for "Teacher's Pet"

That would be very traumatic for a 12 year old girl, and I imagine Molly's parents could sue for emotional trauma. The actress that played Cynthia was an adult.
I also don't think Charlotte would allow that to happen either. Charlotte was so concerned about Julie Pie getting an eating disorder like Sue Ann that she had a heart to heart talk with Julie Pie about eating disorders just after Mrs. Garrett gave Sue Ann a heart to heat talk about eating disorders.

I think if they just mentioned Molly, and had killed off her character, it would have ticked off Molly more than she already was (and she was ticked off for 30 years). She's accused the producers of kicking her off and bringing in Nancy McKeon; how much worse would it be for her to accuse them of killing off her character and bringing in Nancy McKeon?
It would have been better, IMO, for them to offer Molly a major role in an episode where her character passes on... but even though this could be a touching farewell to the character of Molly, I ultimately don't like the idea. It would have been sad seeing the character in previous episodes, knowing she wouldn't be around much longer. It ultimately would have dampened the whole first season, in retrospect. ("That's the girl that dies later on.")
I do think it would have been cool to have Miss Mahoney take the place of Gail in "Teacher's Pet". Gail was supposed to have been a teacher at Eastland for a while, but we never saw her before and of course never saw her since that episode, which feels a little awkward.
'80sSitcoms 01-14-2021, 04:22 PM Yeah, of course I would be completely against them doing to Molly or any of "our girls", I just said the idea occurred to me what ift hey had.
And I see what Retro means about Miss Mahoney, but ultimately I wouldn't want that. She's fan favorite too (to some around here anyway, lol) so I'd hate for them to do that to her.
valentina warner 01-14-2021, 05:31 PM I'm 100 % with Retroon that one: season 1 will always remain for me the best and magical time and for many reasons!
1. I liked MRS G best when she was the queen of the show: she had such a great chemistry with her 7 girls and she could relate so well to each one of them!
After she lost all that weight, gone was her cozy and bubbly personality, to be replaced by a skinny nutritionist who was much calmer (although still warm and caring towards her now 4 girls).
Also by revamping the show, her lines were tremendously diminished and handed to the new girl: JO!
2. I liked BLAIR more when she was the adventurous and fearless girl who broke all the rules: after the revamp, JO took that away from her and i very much resented the writers for it!
By season 2, BLAIR became the snobbish girl who was obsessed with her looks (she was never like that in season 1 lol!) and she started talking about money and wealth. (Luckily the writers didn't take away her caring and warm nature though).
There would be no more stories about BLAIR sneaking away with boys or smoking pots: gone forever was her adventurous nature!
3. The replacement of MR BRADLEY was a mistake (in my point of view anyway).
He had the greatest dynamic with MRS G and the girls, but most important of all: he made 'Eastland' seem more like a home than a school, and when they introduced us this dryand distant MR PARKER, things would never be the same again...
And finally,
4. By firing 'our lost girls', we lost a sense of a homey and orientated family school, where 7 girls lived like real sisters, with a loving and caring housemother (who served them as confidante as well as a real mother when no nonsense came from their part!)
Also, by firing SUE ANN, NANCY, CINDY and MOLLY, we lost 4 great personalities: we wouldn't see them grow up in front of the cameras, and even their guest appearances wouldn't make up for it!
Thank you for reading me gentlemen: that was my opinion, and don't worry FOL FAN ITA cos we're not falling out! (we just have our different opinions).
To ad another note, i'm so glad i wasn't around 20 years ago when the JO fanatics were around: it would have really irritated me to read them falling all over the moon for her!
Sorry, but i'm with 80s on that one: i was never a huge fan of JO either! (although she doesn't bother me, she just isn't among my favourites that's all)....
PS: there is an important fact i forgot to mention though!
After MRS G left the show, she took with her, the magic and the glue that kept FOL! And although season 8 and 9 remain top favourites among some of us (not me though) it would never again be as enjoyable and meaningful to watch....
The end!

But she was only "skinny" for basically that second season, and then she started getting pudgy again. :) Whenever I watch season 2 I am struck by how "deflated" her face is with the weight loss. It just feels so odd to see, and I'm glad to see her face fills back out some when she gains more weigh again.

Blair was extremely concerned with her looks in season 1. Examples in "Running" and "I.Q." immediately jump to my mind.
And she was also already extremely snobbish in season 1. For one example, she looks down on people who would "sink so low" as to ride a bus.

We did see Molly grow up on camera, but in other universe. Molly had at least one movie in every season from Season 3 and on.

Not only that, but we noticeably saw her grow on FOL. She started out a young girl but grew taller and taller up through "The New Girl Part 2", and she would grow to be the tallest of Garrett's girls at 5 foot 8. She would tower over the likes of Mrs. Garrett, Tootie, Natalie, Cindy, Blair, and Sue Ann. Those helpings of mystery meat may have really spiked her height!
Felice, who was the giraffe of our girls in season 1 at the obviously tallest, would tie with Nancy M. at 5 foot 6.

We saw Molly grow a lot in the first season alone. In later episodes like Running, she is taller than all the girls, except for Felice and Mrs. Garrett after being only a little taller than Tootie at the beginning of Season 1.

You missed the whole point of what Impressions and I were saying earlier. Season 1 fans have proven this show has a fan base that is severely divided. One side can't tolerate another side of fan's for their interest in the show. Is there any other show with a fan base divided like FOL? I'm thinking back to my other favorite shows that are hits. I used to chat a lot about them on IMDb 20 years ago because there was more traffic for discussion there than Sitcoms Online. Charmed was very active and I don't think fans hated the ones who liked Paige over Prue. People would just respond they liked the Prue years better without getting mad. Usually the intolerance is fan groups between different shows. The fights Buffy fans would have with Charmed fans and the hostility between them. I'll never forget those because they would spread from the individual show forums to the main TV discussion forums on IMDb  Those were the days when we had TV shows worth talking about and getting passionate over. But yeah I just can't think of any other show like FOL with fans who can't stand what other fans like about the show.
If it's any consolation Valentina, I'm glad you weren't here 20 years ago either. It sounds like you wouldn't have been nice to others since the majority of fans at the time didn't see the show your way. The Nancy fanatics had every right to discuss their favorite part of the show just like you do with season 1 and your love for Mrs. Garrett and Blair.
Christopher 01-14-2021, 06:50 PM Oh, thank you! So sweet :happyface. My source is IMDB, I must say it, Mr. Parker could suspend me :lol:
I wonder where the person on IMDb got their source from. I don't remember Nancy saying she was joking. She just wanted Jo to be dead and the group reunites for her funeral. I do remember Lisa saying after they finished the reunion movie, she called Nancy and told her it wasn't the same playing Blair without her there.
I would love to see her and Jean Smart's "Style & Substance" from the '90s again. Nancy M. said that was one of her favorite roles!
I have this show downloaded. I found it many years ago on one of my download sites. It's alright. Jean Smart was the show so I'm surprise Nancy said it was a favorite role of hers. I remember Nancy's role being a nag all the time to Jean's character.

But what's worse: getting a beautiful, flashback-filled, heartfelt, fond farewell, or disappearing unnoticed and unmentioned for all eternity? To me, it would be a more dignified way to sunset the character: an ending with meaning... an ending that is beautiful and memorable. And all of the girls, not just Jo, could have shared in this farewell for their beloved teacher.
I don't like the idea of any Eastland teacher dying... but if one of them has to, it should be one who had deep meaning for the girls, not a one-off we'd never seen before, and would never hear about again.
Impressions 01-14-2021, 10:01 PM 2. I liked BLAIR more when she was the adventurous and fearless girl who broke all the rules: after the revamp, JO took that away from her and i very much resented the writers for it!

You'd be sorely wrong though. She was incredibly snobby in season 1 to everyone, especially to Sue Ann. She flaunted her wealth. She had like 10,000 suitcases in Molly's Holliday, which showed she was obsessed with money and wealth and was always catching herself in the mirror and smiling. She was as narcissistic as they came.
She was still adventurous and got into trouble. She was there after all when the girls stole the van and went to that bar.
4. By firing 'our lost girls', we lost a sense of a homey and orientated family school, where 7 girls lived like real sisters, with a loving and caring housemother (who served them as confidante as well as a real mother when no nonsense came from their part!)
The show was homey and family-oriented with just four girls. That was not lost after the Lost Girls departure.

That statement irritated me. Just because someone is a massive fan of a character doesn't mean their opinions aren't valuable, worth reading, or wouldn't demand your respect. If there were a lot of topics about people's love for Mr. Bradley, which you know I'm not very fond of, I definitely wouldn't get irritated, I'd just respect their opinion and move on.

Yes Star Wars fans come to mind. That fandom is infamous for eating each other alive. Shows that lasted many eras probably too like Degrassi.
'80sSitcoms 01-15-2021, 01:52 AM Personally, I joke about The Nancy McKeon Fan Brigade™ because it's amazing it was so heavy at one time and now it's gone. I wasn't expecting all the Nanciness when I came here 20 years ago, and I couldn't believe the amount of Nancy M. fans there were. That's fine for them and I never wished they weren't here. I was just trying to generate some discussion on non-Jo things because to me, Jo/Nancy wasn't "the show". There was so much more to discuss, though including her. It was hard at times to generate some non-Nancy discussions. Some people would chime in though. I seem to remember a lot of it was Nancy M. discussion and not even "Jo" the character. So it felt like a breath of fresh air to come back here years later and see that the brigade was gone and Nancy wasn't the ruling topic anymore. That's why I can joke about it, because it was so Nancy-heavy here and then suddenly all that was gone, and many other discussions could pop up over more overlooked/non-discussed things.
I love that there are Lost Girl fans around here which generates an unbelievable amount of topics, but I'm also happy to discuss the cafeteria years (my favorite overall era), Edna's Edibles, and some of the Over Our Heads time. But yes it is easy to get swept up in the Lost Girls fandom because there are currently others here who loved them as well, some of them growing up with them in their formative years as their first "Facts" viewings, like me, and suddenly there are other people who love them to living on different parts of the globe. It's kind of amazing, because with their limited time on the show, who ever thought you'd "run into" others who loved them just as well?
But I'm glad I was here back all those years ago because S.O. was new and threads were being created around the clock it seemed, with people always posting. The site was "fresh" and "hot" and it was amazing to see so many folks enamored of the same shows I grew up watching. :so
80s Dude 01-15-2021, 09:27 AM We welcome all fans here. What we don't have is quotas to make sure all eras have some representation. Jo has been Nancied through no fault of her own or the fault of anybody. Her fans have moved to Facebook or move on to other things.
Of course it hasn't helped that Nancy M. has pretty much Nanied herself over the last decade or so.
'80sSitcoms 01-15-2021, 10:55 AM I don't understand why she tried on several occasions to distance herself from Facts, the show that launched her career. She did other things but Facts is her best known TV show
Because sometimes when an actor gets so famously connected with their character, they don't like that they're thought of as "only Jo" (in Nancy M's case), and they're afraid of being typecast---that is, only thought of as that one particular character and only ever offered scripts that cast them as that same sort of character. "Oh Nancy, we'd love you for our show! You're so butch, you'd be perfect as our 'tough girl mechanic'!"
Some actors have a very hard time struggling with "breaking away" from their famous character and showing producers/directors/audiences that they're capable of playing more roles than one type that's become so strongly associated with them.

That would have been cool, but a bit hard: HERMAN MUNSTER is from the 60 s, whereas THE ADDAMS FAMILY is from the 90 s lol!

It totally could have happened. They’re both from the ‘60s. Both had sitcoms appear in 1964. The theatrical movies and the revival series (The New Addams Family) came out the in the ‘90s.

Really? I only know the ADDAMS FAMILY movie with Christina Ricci on it, and of course the MUNSTERS! (i remember finding the mother really cool!)

Torgo 01-16-2021, 07:19 PM The Addams Family themselves have been around since 1938, they were single panel cartoons published in the New Yorker by Charles Addams. The first names though did come from the television show.
'80sSitcoms 01-18-2021, 01:56 AM I like keeping The Addams Family and The Munsters separate because of their different comedic styles.
Christopher 01-18-2021, 08:00 AM Yes Star Wars fans come to mind. That fandom is infamous for eating each other alive. Shows that lasted many eras probably too like Degrassi.
I'm not a Star Wars fan. I fell asleep during one of them a long time ago. It's not my cup of tea. Doctor 10 seasons of Doctor Who are about as sci fi I'll get
I guess i have to be careful with what i post here on board: i seem to have upset both (you and Christopher) and i didn't mean to!
Just as i wrote to him, i get carried away when i'm involved in a topic and can become passionate about it, but it certainly wasn't my intention to irritate or upset anyone sorry!
And about BLAIR you are absolutely right when i think about it: she still kept her sense of adventure in the following seasons! (at least the earlier ones)
I don't want you to have to feel like you need to be careful when you post on here. I'm just asking you be respectful of other fans opinions. It's all good

With all the remakes taking place, I'm sure something like this will happen. Remakes of the classics seem to be the hit thing these days.

I remember The New Addams Family. It was one of the original shows when FOX Family Channel first started in 1998. It wasn't that bad. The theatrical movies from the 90's were the best for The Addams Family. Part 2 is still my favorite because of Joan Cusack.

Thank you Christopher! (it's all good with me too!)
On the ADDAMS FAMILY topic: i didn't know JOHN CUSACK was on it? (i only remember CHRISTINA RICCI and the main guy who later died of a heart attack RAUL JULIO, and of course ANJELICA HUSTON)

I enjoy Doctor Who as well (I didn't like the Capaldi years, and can't watch them, but have hopes of eventually trying the Whittaker years). For me, Tennant is the best modern Doctor.

I stopped watching after Tennant left. Doctor 10 was the best IMO. I also thought Donna was the best companion and was so pissed at the ending she got. She should have had her memories back  I tried a few episodes of Matt Smith's Doctor and got bored. Doctor Who is another show I started watching when it came out here in 2005 or 2006 and then stopped watching because it wasn't good anymore. I've been encouraged to watch the Capaldi years, but I'm not a huge science fiction fan. Space ships and aliens are boring to me. David Tennant's years of Doctor Who had a good cast and that's what I kept watching. Oh and Torchwood. That was another good show that was gone too soon. I liked how dark Torchwood was. It reminded me of Buffy.

I, too, enjoyed Torchwood, and you are right: there was a strong feeling of Buffy, there.
David Tennant was just so good. But all of his companions were excellent. Yes, the ending of the Donna storyline was horrific. I have hopes that they will one day fix that. After all, during David Tennant's years, they fixed Sarah Jane Smith's abandonment from the 1970s, so old wounds can be healed. And I would definitely consider that quite a wound: no memories of The Doctor. :(
I started watching Doctor Who in 1985, and got to see the original 1963-1989 run (nearly all episodes available at that time), so I still remember the era of tin foil monsters. The 2005 revival was fantastic. I have a TARDIS mug that the TARDIS dematerializes when coffee is poured into the mug, something I had wanted since I was a kid, back when you could order them on PBS.

The Addams Family TV show in the 60s stared Andy/Mackenzie Aston's father John Aston as Gomez. He and Lisa Loring, who played Wednesday are the only surviving cast members from the 60s TV show. You can see John Asten on the Facts of Life episode where Jo reviews her hidden piano playing skills at the Night Club with Mrs. G.
valentina warner 01-19-2021, 07:05 PM The only science fiction programs i like are the old ones:
STAR TREK from the 1960 s when we had William Shatner on it; LOST IN SPACE is a favourite one of mine (the doc was always my favourite character), THE PLANET OF THE APES etc.... (all from the 1960 s i guess!)
My favourite of all times is THE TWILIGHT ZONE though (although it's more eerie/mysterious to be considered science fiction?)
There is a few more, but my favourite monster movies i enjoyed watching when growing up, were the Japanese ones: they had those dinosaur movies i had never been able to find on the telly again! (i'm not even sure it was ever made into DVDs lol!)

Classic Star Trek is wonderful. I didn't care for Lost in Space. My favorite classic Twilight Zone episode is "Time Enough at Last" (the guy with the glasses).
Another favorite, for sure, was Land of the Lost.

Donna is someone we all can relate to. She wanted her life to mean something and feel like she made a difference. All the things she got to do while with the Doctor showing her importance were wiped away. It still irritates me all these years later because Rose and Martha got their happy endings. Why couldn't Donna with at least knowing how special she really is? Not gonna lie, that's another reason I quit Doctor Who as you can tell  I'm glad David and Catherine are friends in real life. It was so awesome seeing them act together again on her variety skit show.

Ugh, I hate Star Trek  It just seems silly to me a story about a bunch of people on a space ship with their little "phew, phew" guns exploring planets  I'm surprise how famous that show got. Trekies are serious fans too. Worst than FOL IMO. They protest if they don't get their show. I remember when that Scott Bakula Star Trek show ended. They surrounded UPN with their signs saying don't make the same mistake whatever other channel canceled the original Star Trek.

Doctor Who is a show about righting injustice, so I have hope that eventually, Donna will get a happy ending. Maybe we'll wait another decade. But it can still happen.

I love David Tennant, he's very talented. I first saw him on the 4th Harry Potter movie. He's a great actor

Hey UMFan! Glad to know your story, and how you fell in love with The Facts of Life.
Do you still have any of your VHS recordings? Some of those specials should be uploaded to YouTube.
(Also, I lived not far from Waterloo as a kid in the 1980s and 1990s).
