View Full Version : Line counts
RetroGuy2000 01-04-2021, 10:27 AM Unlike Lisa, who never counted her lines, we know other FOL actors (John, Felice, Pamela) did. This is the thread to post your estimates for line counts, based on the episodes themselves (rather than the scripts, which were a "work in progress"). Please specify which version of the DVD or syndicated episode you are watching, and if/when you noticed cut scenes.
It'd probably be too hard for any one person to compile this type of document, but we could break this work up. Can we start with Season One? I'll update this post as we go.

80s Dude 01-04-2021, 11:25 AM Is there a place to get the transcripts of the actual episodes so we can count them on paper?
'80sSitcoms 01-04-2021, 11:43 AM Is there a place to get the transcripts of the actual episodes so we can count them on paper?
Probably easiest just to watch the episodes and note the lines as they go.
RetroGuy2000 01-04-2021, 12:06 PM Is there a place to get the transcripts of the actual episodes so we can count them on paper?
The Group (http://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/group.php?groupid=1) does have access to a number of S1/S2 scripts, but it's partial, and there are some changes between the script and the final taped productions. If it's helpful, they are available. But because there were alterations, it may just be confusing.
In the past, I just did a tally mark whenever a character spoke.

Boy, if anyone committed themselves to Nancy's lines he'd sure have a lot of free time on his hands. ;)

Thank you!
I thought I'd start with "Running".
80s Dude 01-04-2021, 01:50 PM It's nice to see an episode have an impact on someone in the real world. Especially one in the first season which many people mock.
80s Dude 01-04-2021, 04:09 PM So when counting lines, do we count each sentence?
'80sSitcoms 01-04-2021, 04:20 PM So when counting lines, do we count each sentence?
See, this is where it can get "unofficial". Retro and I say no, not each sentence, but each time a character speaks uninterrupted.
So, for example, in Cindy and Mrs. Garrett's heart-to-heart in Cindy's and Sue Ann's room in "Rough Housing", all of Cindy's sentences at one time wouldn't count as separate lines, but rather as one long "line" until Mrs. Garrett then speaks. Then it's Mrs. Garrett's "line", and when Cindy starts again, it's Cindy's "line".
For example, when Cindy says, "Well, my mom had my dad explain it to me. He told me that sex was like a big garden, and every time you love someone, you put fertilizer on them! But I think the time clock is better" that's three sentences, but it's one "line" because it's one chunk of separate dialogue for Cindy uninterrupted in the script.
It can get more controversial with Nancy's phone calls though. I could see arguments for saying her phone call is "one line", but also they are separate "lines" because she is responding to each of Roger's unheard "lines" from the Bates phone.
RetroGuy2000 01-04-2021, 05:11 PM Yeah, what '80sSitcoms said: a block of text is one line. Until another character speaks, it's all one line.
In the case of Nancy's phone lines, it's a tough call because the lines are separated by pauses.
Lorimar Television 01-04-2021, 10:40 PM Haha this is a cool idea, I’d be curious to see how evenly it’s divided up.
RetroGuy2000 01-05-2021, 01:01 PM Haha this is a cool idea, I’d be curious to see how evenly it’s divided up.
I don't think it will be even at all!
'80sSitcoms 01-05-2021, 01:10 PM I still can't believe Lisa had the gall to actually claim on camera to the world, "There was never any 'counting of the lines' ", and mocking that in a way like it was a rumor of juvenile studio activity the girls had engaged in or something. It's sure easy to say that when you nearly always had more lines than anyone, Lisa. You never had any cause to count your lines.
But still, love ya, mean it. :)

It was like when Lisa said Julie Anne was about the farthest that a girl could be from being a tomboy, yet Julie Anne talked about being a tomboy on her Instagram post in a tribute to the death of her mother and posted a photo of herself in her pre Facts of Life days holding a baseball bat getting ready to hit a baseball.

On a related note, you should've been at this board 20 years ago. There were some real anti-Lisa posts going on during the time where she revealed that infamous behavior about the hot sauce punishment with her kids.

Yeah, the "there wasn't any counting of lines" thing has always bothered me a bit, so I joke about it. It clearly wasn't a problem for her, so she's entitled to share her experience, but I'm so glad we now have other actors' takes on that, from their own mouths.
I can be a huge fan of Lisa, and still kind of poke fun at something she's sort of blind to, even after all these years.

The hot sauce was a weird period for her. I'm glad she gave it up.

Yeah, she can share her own experience, which is very welcome. I don't like the "fact" that it was basically a lie. Sure she didn't count herself, but others did. She she doesn't have a right to say it didn't happen, when it did, unless she truly had no idea, but with 7 girls around you'd think she would have seen or heard something. :lookaroun Heck, even John Lawlor saw it, and he wasn't even a girl! (meaning, as an adult man, he probably wasn't in the girls' dressing rooms that much )
And yeah I'm a big Lisa fan, love her new show, it's just that seeming lie and the hot sauce that really bother me, lol.

Not only did John Lawlor say it happened, Jack Ellinson said it as well, in that book. He said the girls would "pout" if they had no lines that week.
And yeah I'm a big Lisa fan, love her new show, it's just that seeming lie and the hot sauce that really bother me, lol.
There are other things that bother me about Lisa, but I still consider myself a huge fan. I absolutely love that she talks about the show, still, and almost never misses an opportunity for a reunion.

Yet another "tell", Lisa! Maybe she was more like Blair than thought, being self-absorbed in her own world.
There are other things that bother me about Lisa, but I still consider myself a huge fan. I absolutely love that she talks about the show, still, and almost never misses an opportunity for a reunion.
Oh definitely, on all counts. It still bothers me that she refused to do her job as an actress and she was given a free pass because of her religion. But it is very satisfying to know that she regrets that decision, and if she could go back, she would deign to appear in the episode after all.
But yeah, I mean, if Lisa Whelchel showed up at my door while I was in shorts, a T-shirt, and barefoot, I would totally invite her in to get comfy on the couch and jaw about "Facts" for a good while.
80s Dude 01-05-2021, 06:36 PM I think Lisa feels she is a spokeswoman for The Facts of Life franchise. She is very reluctant to criticize anything about the show. Even them weighing the girls every week, she says wasn't doing the job that they hired her for by losing weight.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TC-eGU5jP9Y
On a side note, she said her parents were divorcing during the summer between the 1st and 2nd season. The Molly's Holiday episode must have really hit home for Lisa. Thus why she was wiping away tears after her talk with Molly.
RetroGuy2000 01-05-2021, 06:41 PM Yet another "tell", Lisa! Maybe she was more like Blair than thought, being self-absorbed in her own world.
 Yeah. Of course, she's telling her story, her interpretation of events from 30-40+ years ago, so there's bound to be some inaccuracies and misremembered things.
Oh definitely, on all counts. It still bothers me that she refused to do her job as an actress and she was given a free pass because of her religion.
That I don't mind, so much. It was only a single episode, and the fact is, they all missed episodes for one reason or another.
I definitely prefer what she did to what Kirk Cameron did on the set of Growing Pains, insisting Julie McCullough be fired because she had previously done Playboy.
But it is very satisfying to know that she regrets that decision, and if she could go back, she would deign to appear in the episode after all.
It really could have been a powerful moment, Blair advising Natalie to wait. It definitely was a missed opportunity. But hindsight is 20/20...

Hmm, possibly, although MH was allegedly filmed in December. Who knows if her parents tried hiding any trouble or not, if it was that troublesome by that point.

I do agree that Lisa really has become the unofficial spokesperson for the show: the one they get for nearly every interview, the one who will dress in an Eastland uniform, the one who answers questions, but maybe in a way that promotes a positive point of view in a way that salty Felice, disappointed Geri, or pissed Molly would never consider.
Getting all of their voices, then, is important, because it tells more of the story. For so many years, all we heard were (paraphrased) "there were no problems on the set, it was boring, nothing ever happened." I do love that there wasn't a lot of drama, unlike on neighboring sets, but I do like the details when we do hear of incidents, situations, and decisions that affected the cast.

Great observation! It definitely makes Lisa's performance feel very authentic.

Generally divorces happen slowly. First comes the separation, counseling, and then divorce. Divorces can take a few years to happen. Getting lawyers, legal filings, court scheduling all take time. Lisa was definitely very emotional at the end of that episode.

Nancy McKeon generally doesn't do interviews about the show unless she is with one of the other girls, I mean women. Mindy has her criticisms of the show. Kim generally is positive, though she would have liked to have had more diversity on the show. In Lisa's view, the show is all rainbows of unicorns. While the show was amazing in that it had no child actor problems results from the cast, there was some drama here and there. Some known and some that we may never know. Just last year was the first time we found out about the Charlotte Rae/Jenny O'Hara power struggle early on.
valentina warner 01-05-2021, 07:31 PM Wow! It has been very interesting for me reading tonight's thread on LISA's popularity: 10 or 20 years ago, it was all about JO!!!!!
I also agree, that out of all the FOL girls/women, LISA is the one who most fondly interacts: i honestly believe, that for her it was an important part of her life (which she definitely illustrated during the run of the show) and yes, she is always eager to attend an interview or a reunion lol!
By the way: what was that story on the hot sauce punishment she used on her kids lol? (it sounds kind of sadistic to me!)
RetroGuy2000 01-05-2021, 07:55 PM By the way: what was that story on the hot sauce punishment she used on her kids lol? (it sounds kind of sadistic to me!)
When her kids misbehaved, she made them eat hot sauce. She promoted this theory of discipline in several of her books, but later distanced herself from the Christian hot-saucing movement.
Lorimar Television 01-05-2021, 08:58 PM Julie and Lisa seem to enjoy talking about FOL the most.

'80sSitcoms 01-06-2021, 02:02 PM I think you guys should "call out" what episode you're gonna line-count before you do it. Because for instance, I know Retro has counted "Running" but it's not posted here yet. But I'd hate for someone to spend their time counting an episode when it's already being done by someone else who may post it first, and for that time spent counting ending up being wasted.
'80sSitcoms 01-06-2021, 02:08 PM If no one has started yet, I shall bear the Eastland cross to count the lines for my beloved Cindy Webster's starring vehicle "Rough Housing". :)

But I'd hate for someone to spend their time counting an episode when it's already being done by someone else who may post it first, and for that time spent counting ending up being wasted.
Yes, definitely. Because otherwise, it could result in duplicated work, which would be a shame.
I'll post the results of "Running" soon. Those girls are still on the field.
RetroGuy2000 01-06-2021, 02:11 PM If no one has started yet, I shall bear the Eastland cross to count the lines for my beloved Cindy Webster's starring vehicle "Rough Housing". :)
Thank you, '80s!!!!!

Now that's more like it! That's the "Facts" I know---leaving Nancy way down there, lol (sorry Nance!).
How did you count Nancy's phone call with Roger? Did you do it the one line way, or the separate-lines-alternating-with-unheard-Roger way?

I kept to my rule of "It's all one line until someone else says something, or the scene ends." But I can see where it could be done the other way, too.

I was talking about Facts when I said "one season at a time". Once we have finished the first season line counts, we could continue with the second, the third and so on.

BLAIR has only 7 lines on the Pilot???? That can't be true!
She actually interacts a lot lol!
1. BLAIR ignores MRS G when she wants to shake hands with her.
2. BLAIR mocks SUE ANN about 'true bloods', and NANCY calls her both nasty sisters.
3. BLAIR is rude towards MRS G, when she gets caught smoking.
4. When MRS G tries to snatch BLAIR's cigarette out of her hand she is rude to her again.
5. When the CROCKER talks about his play, BLAIR agrees with him and when he says "Thank you Blair!"The girls repeat the same etc..
6. BLAIR mocks SUE ANN (again) when she wears the donkey mask.
And after all that she ONLY gets 7 lines?

I was surprised she only has 7 lines but it's correct. Blair has only 2 scenes in the episode. In the first scene, when Mrs. Garrett and Kimberly arrive at Eastland (Eastlake), she talks to Sue Ann, Edna and Mr. Crocker. In the second scene, during the play, she talks to Sue Ann. She has no lines in the scene where Edna is offered the job of housemother.

Maybe you're right, but BLAIR surely made an entrance with her behaviour as the naughty/rebellious girl, and the dynamic when she interacts with MRS G is what made the Pilot so entertaining lol! (i surely enjoyed watching it!)

It's Nancy, of course, who shares the opening with Blair...
80s Dude 01-06-2021, 09:38 PM Didn't take me long to do the line count. I went to the Adoption rights blog and copied the script into Exce;, sorted it. and deleted everything bit the capital letter of the characters which indicated the characters lines and not mentions of their names in their scripts. I then did a subtotal of the Capitalized names.

Sue Ann and Blair were going back and forth trying to convince Mrs. Garrett their side of whether to get remarried to Mr. Garrett. A lot of one sentence lines will bump up the line count.

Yup, Sue Ann had more than Blair. You have to remember though there's a scene where 5 of our girls are in the common room discussing Mrs. Garrett's marriage past, and Blair's not there! Blair and Cindy are the two not around for whatever reason. So Sue Ann got several lines there while Blair couldn't say any since she wasn't there, lol.

Haha, yup. I love Cindy in this episode (and every episode!) And there's that beautiful moment of FOL character at the end where Cindy and Molly, my two favorite girls, are civily and respectfully debating whether Mrs. Garrett should take Robert back or not. I love that part! :loveya:

Oh of course I love episodes that are meaty stories for certain girls as well. But since season 1 was so terribly unbalanced, it's such a wonderful feeling seeing these shows where all of the girls are utilized to good effect. :loveya:
I'm surprised you said TLC though, as I see that as another ensemble piece. It feels like the "Coca-Cola Four" get more of the lines. If I think of a Sue Ann episode actually centering on her, I think of "Dieting" or "Dope" or sharing "Running" with Cindy, ones where she's really out front.

It's not unusual for large cast shows to have character unbalances. On Step by Step, a show that was shown that large casts can work, it was the JT, Dana, Cody show. That other kids weren't featured as much, especially the younger ones. On Happy Days, Potsie was eventually Nancied , but they never Chuck Cunninghamed Anson Williams.

The girls have that many more lines than the boys?? Wow! I guess Willis did most of the talking for them--yeah, since he had about 20 more lines than Kimberly.
But Cindy had almost as many lines as the other girls?? Wow...when I watch TSP I always feel that she's so underused and has much less lines than the other FOL girls.
'80sSitcoms 01-07-2021, 04:23 PM I don't see this thread going much past season 1. Because after all, the whole origin of this was Lisa's claim that in that first year with 7 girls, "There was never any 'counting of the lines' or anything." And what's the fun in doing this without the Lost Girls? We know what happens after season 1. The show is much more fairly balanced with 4 girls.
Of course you guys can do all 9 seasons if you want, I just think the fun is mostly for season 1 because of how atrociously unbalanced the scripts were, and to see how unfair they were to some characters.

Yeah, Arnold and Willis have all those lines. The girls have two scenes: the first when they arrive at the penthouse and the second when they return. The boys appear only in this second scene but they didn't say that much. Cindy has less lines than the other girls but she speaks several times.

We could continue, it's funny :lol:. We're discovering new things

We can do it for Gossip in Season 2. They still had 7 girls for that episode. Perhaps Cindy got more lines in that episode than she did in Adoption.

I just want to get through the first season before even discussing other seasons. The idea of doing 200+ episodes is wearying to me. If there are plenty of people, a second season could be doable... but I can't contemplate doing 9 seasons and 3 TV movies right now.
As you say, the scripts for S1 became atrociously uneven; therefore, it might be nice to do a comparison with a more balanced season... down the line. Once S1 is wrapped up. And there's still plenty of S1 work...

Probably just do the post Season 1 episodes the the lost girls were in. Would be interesting to compare Felice's line count post season 1 to her season 1 lines.
FOL-FAN-ITA 01-08-2021, 09:24 AM I suggest, once season 1 is completed and if you guys agree with me, to do all 9 seasons. It would be interesting to see a kind of evolution of the number of lines. We can do one season at a time, without being in a hurry. Let me know what you think

Perhaps, but no. Very close though. As a supporting player in "Gossip" she has 5 lines:
"Hey Tootie, how about coming up to our room tonight?"
"Who would we tell??" (who indeed!)
"You did!"
"Shhh, you guys, Mrs. Garrett!"
"What'd she say?"
She gets way more (relativetly speaking) than that Sue Ann, who only has two:
"You mean Blair was really trying to steal Nancy's guy??"
"Oh, absolutely not."
And this from a former major lead---talk about being Nancied!
'80sSitcoms 01-08-2021, 12:08 PM Even after the Great Purge, the Core Four episodes seemed to focused more on Blair and Jo than Tootie and Natalie.
But that doesn't matter in line counting because they were never Nancied. They couldn't be since there were only 4 girls. All 4 always had plenty of lines.

I knew CINDY and BLAIR would be almost even in the episode 'Rough Housing': both girls spent a long time interacting with MRS G (CINDY had her first heart to heart talk with our 'feisty red haired', while BLAIR gets her real first lecture from her lol!)

I bet Charlotte never did any "counting of the lines"! ;)

'80sSitcoms 01-11-2021, 04:03 AM Hey you guys, this isn't line counts, but I thought it would still be a neat stat for "Facts" geeks like us. 🤓
Here are the number of times Garrett and each of her girls appear in the clip montage of closing credits for the 9 season 1 episodes of 1980:
Mrs. Garrett/Blair: 4
Sue Ann/Cindy/Natalie/Molly: 2
Mr. Bradley/Tootie/Nancy: 1
-
Sue Ann's first one is kind of "half a Sue Ann" as you see only about half of her when Mrs. Garrett comes wogging into the gym in that first clip, but you can tell it's her, so I counted it, especially for Retsy and Lorsie...and now The Count
And if it weren't for those Switched-On Sizzlers™, Nancy would've been "Nancied" right out of the closing credits!

Kind of weird that Tootie got so "Nancied" in the ending credits, considering NBC execs loved her. Still, I guess that's balanced out by her roller skating scene (with Blair and Sue Ann) in the opening.

Well she did get her own solo clip in the closing credits, putting on an act with that "blond" wig (I use quotations because it always looks white to me).
The only other two to get a solo clip are Mr. Bradley returning from the airport in "Molly's Holiday", and Blair modeling her dress on the stairs from...something ("Dieting"?)
And no reaction from you on The Count? I thought surely he'd give you a laugh or at least a chuckle.

RetroGuy2000 01-12-2021, 09:22 AM Here are the line counts for "Dope". After watching it again, I am more convinced than ever that by the taping of this episode, the producers must have already decided "who was to stay and who was to go", with the exception, perhaps, of Sue Ann. Swap out Sue Ann with Jo and you basically have the second season.

Perhaps, but it also seems to be par for the course for many of the episodes for Nat, Mols, Cinds, and Nanc to be consistently lower in lines (certainly relative to the others).
But Margie made it sound like it wasn't the producers who decided who went, it was Margie and Linda: "It wasn't a case of, 'We don't like this girl', it was 'We really like them'."
Maybe they asked for the new women's regime input and the producers took that feedback and then handed out the pink slips?

I don't think Margie and Linda came on until after the filming of the first season wrapped up. They still needed to see what the ratings were like. They still had to see "Little Darlings" to get the idea for the new character.
It sounded like there was some intense debate as to who would stay and go. Lead producer Jerry Mayer said he thought Molly had the most talent of them all. They also thought there was too many blondes (insulting the intelligence of their viewers) so only one blonde would stay.

True, but they could been brought on board at the end of the season or the start of summer. The way she said made it sound like it was the new writing team's decision (which would have included producer Jerry Mayor).
It sounded like there was some intense debate as to who would stay and go. Lead producer Jerry Mayer said he thought Molly had the most talent of them all.
And Eve Brandstein thought the same thing. She really did shine in some great moments, starting with episode 3 "The Return of Mr. Garrett".
They also thought there was too many blondes (insulting the intelligence of their viewers) so only one blonde would stay.
Well, there were a lot of bond girls---to a 4-year-old watching in daily syndication. But I still knew who was who. ;)

That's true. But putting only Tootie, Natalie, Blair, and Sue Ann in the group hug at the end is telling. Remember, Mrs. Garrett, Tootie, Natalie, Nancy, and Mr. Bradley all go downstairs in the final scene. THEN, Mrs. Garrett, Tootie, and Natalie come back up for the hug scene. If anyone could have come upstairs, why just "pick four" and forget everybody else?
But Margie made it sound like it wasn't the producers who decided who went, it was Margie and Linda: "It wasn't a case of, 'We don't like this girl', it was 'We really like them'."
I didn't take the "we" to refer to just Margie and Linda, but to the writers and producers in general. I do agree it's clear Margie and Linda had some hand in it, but they couldn't have overridden the showrunner or Norman Lear. Let's not forget that NBC's Warren Littlefield was very supportive of reducing the cast: Pick four. Forget everybody else."
Maybe they asked for the new women's regime input and the producers took that feedback and then handed out the pink slips?
I do believe that. A producer/producers told Molly she was staying. That did not happen. So there was definitely back and forth.

FOL-FAN-ITA 01-13-2021, 05:44 AM Here's the final count for the 1979-1980 season. I put only the main cast members.
Mrs. Garrett 749 (+73 on DS)
Blair 508 (+7 on DS)
Mr. Bradley 416
Sue Ann 327 (+18 on DS)
Tootie 277 (+32 on DS)
Natalie 173 (+16 on DS)
Molly 169 (+34 ON DS)
Cindy 144 (+15 on DS)
Nancy 132 (+19 on DS)
Miss Mahoney 64
CONSIDERATIONS
I was 100% sure Nancy would have been the girl with less lines. As Retro said before me, it's basically season 2 without Mr. Bradley and with Jo in the place of Sue Ann. Probably Sue Ann was the runner up for the 4th girl position, since she has more lines than her Lost schoolmates and for her last scene in Dope. Molly would probably have been the second choice.
1. If we consider only the 7 girls, on the top of the list out of 13 episodes we have:
Blair for 6 episodes
Sue Ann for 3 episodes
Tootie for 2 episodes
Cindy for 1 episode
Molly for 1 episode
At the bottom of the list, out of 13 episodes we have:
Cindy for 5 episodes
Nancy for 4 episodes
Natalie for 2 episodes
Molly for 2 episodes
Surprisingly, Nancy has less lines overall but less episodes where she's at the bottom of the list than Cindy.
2. If we consider all cast members we have this situation. On the top of the list, out of 13 episodes we have:
Mrs. Garrett for 8 episodes
Blair for 2 episodes
Mr. Bradley for 2 episodes

Her line comes at the 13:00 mark of the show. Her second line is about 40 seconds later.
Then her only other line is near the very end.
Wow. Nancy was totally "Nancied" in "Facts of Love".

Yes, that was great detail for 80s Dude to notice that!
'80sSitcoms 01-13-2021, 04:56 PM Don't worry, I did my count before Retro updated the post
Yay! I thought so lol.
Can I do The New Girl P 1?
It's yours, amico mio! :bighug:
FOL-FAN-ITA 01-13-2021, 04:56 PM Hey Retro, "I just had another one of my brilliant ideas" (read it with Blair's voice). Can we move season 1 lines into a separate topic and we add season 2 episodes here? What do you say?

Perfect! By the way, I can sign the names for your topic. What do you say?

I think since season 1 is already listed here in such exhaustive detail, that rather than do that, just make this thread "Line counts - Season 1" and start a new one for season 2. What do you say, amico mio?

You can "sign the names"? You mean you'd be happy to count names in season 1 too?

Your idea is good . I had thought of a single topic for all 9 seasons, just like you did with the writers list and the "All 8 girls in all 9 seasons"
You can "sign the names"? You mean you'd be happy to count names in season 1 too?
Oh, I'm sorry. I meant sign the names on paper for your topic. I can do TNG 1, since I have to watch it but I can also do season 1

Sure, amico mio! I'll be counting names in "I.Q." and "Emily Dickinson" later.

FOL-FAN-ITA - 3 (+2 DS)
Retro - 3
Lorimar - 1
80s Dude - 1
Poor Lorimar and 80s Dude got Nancied on the number of episodes they received!
:lol::lol::lol::lol:
The three of us ('80sS, you and I) are Blair, Tootie and Natalie (or Sue Ann) of the counting, Lorimar and 80s are going to the basement :lol::lol:

I prefer to keep everything in one thread. Much easier to find (in order to reference) later. There weren't nine threads for the writer database, nor nine threads for the production date guide.

RetroGuy2000 01-13-2021, 05:54 PM Yes, I understood. :)

Oh, okay, I'm sorry.
I just read you put Metal Head in your count of page 1, I didn't think you would have put him there :lol::lol:
