View Full Version : Is Melanie Moretti a “slut”?
So Wawwie around here thinks Melanie is a slut while a) I don’t and b) I never liked the double standard that men who have lots are sex are looked upon favorably while women who have lots of sex are called negative names.
So, starting my current Hot In Cleveland rewatch, I’ll track Melanie’s activities and see where we end up. So let’s begin and plow ahead (so to speak):
In the pilot she goes on her first date in 25 years while going though a divorce, but it doesn’t seem like anything happens with the guy.

If I'm remembering correctly, I'm certain that in the pilot, Melanie did have sex with the guy she only knew for a few hours on his boat. In later episodes, she also sexes it up with some stranger in an elevator. Pretty gross in my opinion.
opus, you might wanna take off your Valerie goggles. It's "Melanie" that engaged in trampy behavior.

No, I watched the pilot yesterday. Melanie heads off on the date, but we stay behind with Joy and Victoria as they find out the guy is married. They then go interrupt the two of them on his boat. Nothing after that in the dialog indicates anything happened yet. (Would it have? Maybe, maybe not. We can't assume).
The elevator episode is way down the road. Patience. We'll get there.
By the way, where can I pick up a pair of those Valerie goggles? They sound awesome.
Moving on to today...
Season 1, Episode 2-Who's Your Mama?
To help Elka, Melanie double dates with an 85 year old. Definitely nothing happens.

I thought for sure that in the morning, Melanie gets into bed with Victoria and Joy where she recounts her date and the sex. Vic and Joy call her a tramp or something and I remember Melanie saying "I know, right..." That much I do remember. I also remember she was in her pajamas at the time. I'm just not sure if she was talking about the guy with the boat.

I never did watch much of this show, but I did see the pilot episode when it first aired and I clearly remember the following dialogue...
Joy: You are such a little slut!
Melanie: I know, right?!
It was the first time that I had ever heard that peculiar expression and I thought maybe that it was going to be her catchphrase. I even commented about it on here at the time.

The timeline in the pilot is the plane to Paris emergency lands in Cleveland, they meet the guys, a scene where they're still staying in a hotel, then they acquire the house which includes Elka, and Melanie heads off to the date. I watched after midnight so I could have dozed off for a second and missed something, but I don't think so (I admit I don't have Hot In Cleveland as well memorized as I do One Day At A Time)
And don't forget, Michael Lembeck directed the pilot

Without the "right", 'I know" was Monica Gellars catchphrase

Big difference. "I know" makes sense. "I know, right" doesn't.
I do remember that she was smiling when she said it.
And in the just first two eps, Elka calls them prostitutes and whores a few times. Certainly a series not for the kids.

Yep, that's what I remember from the pilot episode, too.

I think you did miss something when you dozed off because I'm 99% sure that Melanie got her freak on with the boat guy in the pilot episode. And that's the whole reason that Joy called her "a little slut"!

Okay, I rewatched the hotel scene in the link above wide awake and I’m willing to switch from “definitely did not” to “may or may not have “. Melanie comes in wearing the same shirt the guy had had been wearing (Did she put it on after sex? Did they just buy her an identical shirt?) and says he was showing her the town and complimenting her. I still think it could be taken either way though. But I say Joys line was tongue in cheek and not meant to be taken seriously.
All this occurs before the date on a boat scene.
If they did do it immediately it was because Melanie was still down and insecure after seeing her ex with someone young enough to be their daughter.

Season 1, Episode 3 : Birthdates
The first of the group blind dates episodes. Melanie looked like the dead wife of her guy, which makes her uncomfortable. Eventually the guy says he would like to make love to his wife (i.e Melanie) one more time, which makes her finally send him away.

That was a pretty good episode
Continuing to track any of Melanie's sexual escapades...
Season 1 Episode 4- The Sex That Got Away
At an event at the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame, Melanie meets her female singing idol, who through a series of misunderstandings thinks Melanie is a lesbian. The idol eventually makes a move, but Melanie isn’t interested in that.

Maybe there's some episodes on youtube.
Okay, after the weekend off, let's get back to seeing if there's any activity in Melanie's sex life....
Season 1, Episode 5- Good Neighbors
After feeling she got off on the wrong foot with a neighbor, Melanie ends up in his house. They talk and Melanie feels his balls (his baseball collection! Get your mind out of the gutter!). The guy then says he wants her and takes off his robe. Melanie leaves. (The guy is played by Newman from Seinfeld)
Season 1 Episode 6- Meet The Parents
Nothing in that area for Melanie today. But her still married mother does jump into bed with Victoria's father.

Wayne Knight was good in the show. I think in later episodes he becomes lovers with Joy? I vaguely recall them doing surveillance together. I'm not entirely sure of the details.

I don't remember that episode at all.
Last night I decided to watch the pilot again. It does seem to be implied that Melanie slept with the married boat guy.

I didn't recognize Melanie's mother, but Victoria's father was Barney Miller.

It's from the youtube video that you posted in this thread. I'll check youtube later to see if they have any other videos.
Season 1 Episode 7- It's Not That Complicated
After running into her ex husband at their daughter's play, Melanie ends up kissing him. Elka calls her slutty. She considers an attempt at reconciliation, but he shows his true colors again and she tells him off. At the end, Melanie meets a cop named Pete (who will be sticking around for a little while)
Season 1, Episode 8- The Play's The Thing
Melanie's officially dating Pete (her first boyfriend since she was a teenager). They're definitely doing it.
Season 1 Episode 9- Good Luck Faking The Goiter
No mention of Pete today. Melanie’s son visits. We hear again that she had married young.
Season 1 Episode 10- Tornado
Season finale. Despite only knowing him a few weeks, during the fear of a tornado Melanie yells out I love you to Pete, but isn’t sure he heard it.
Cliffhanger- Pete arrests Elka!

If you watched it when it originally aired it was over 10 years ago. Time flies.
Season 2 Episode 1- Free Elka
Season Premiere. Melanie is mad at Pete because he keeps arresting her friends. But at the end they each tell the other they love them.
Wawwie 01-12-2021, 03:56 PM If you watched it when it originally aired it was over 10 years ago. Time flies.
Yeah, I haven't seen the show in ten years except for two or three episodes recently on Gettv recently and the pilot a few days ago that you posted in this thread. I forget... was Hot In Cleveland a TVLand show? TVLand had two other shows that I really liked. I loved Happily Divorced with Fran Drescher and The Exes with Kristin Johnston. Too bad those shows didn't last. One TVLand show that I hate is Younger. IMO, that show is complete trash.

The pilot episodes of The Exes and a show called Retired At 35 are part of the extras on the Hot In Cleveland box set. I have watched neither of them.

Did you ever see Happily Divorced? I give that show an A+. I really miss it!

The only other TV Land show I watched was Kirstie, which only lasted one season and starred Kirstie Alley, Rhea Pearlman, and Michael Richards. Kirstie’s character crossed over to Hot In Cleveland. In fact, she’s in that Melanie and a guy in the elevator episode (season 5).

I forgot about "Kirstie." I watched that one, too, but I don't remember too much about it so for me, it was rather forgettable. IMO, their best series was Happily Divorced. I loved, loved, loved that show! I was so sad that it only lasted two seasons. Tischina Arnold was in it. She played "Judy" Fran's best friend.

Yeah, Kirstie wasn't that memorable.
Season 2 Episode 2- Bad Bromance
Lots of Melanie drama today. Melanie meets Pete's mother, who turns out to be played by Bonnie Franklin! Pete's mother hates Melanie! Meanwhile, Joy and Elka confirm Melanie DID sleep with the guy (Hank) in the pilot episode, who turns out to be Pete's brother! When Pete finds out he breaks up with her.
Season 2 Episode 3-Hot For The Lawyer
On a dateless cold spell, the three women are attracted to Elka's lawyer and decide to compete for him. At the end they start to realize he's nothing but looks. Victoria mentions Melanie's one night stand in the pilot.
Season 2 Episode 4- Sisterhood of the Traveling Spanx
Melanie meets a doctor at Stormy's
Season 2 Episode 5- I Love Lucci: Part One
Everyone’s in LA for Victoria’s All My Children appearance. Melanie is selling her old house but ends up ruining the relationship of the couple buying it instead.
Season 2 Episode 6- I Love Lucci: Part Two
The couple make up and the house sale goes through. Also, Melanie accompanies Elka as Elka attempts to meet Robert Redford.
Season 2 Episode 7- Dog Tricks, Sex Flicks & Joy's Fix
Victoria thinks making a sex tape with a woman will help her career and tries to recruit Melanie. Melanie declines.
Season 2 Episode 8- LeBron is Le Gone
Melanie has a date with a coach from the Cleveland Cavaliers. It doesn’t work out because he’s too obsessed with LeBron James leaving.
Wawwie 01-22-2021, 04:02 PM opus, are you watching the series on DVD? Your posts are making me want to watch the show again. Do you know if it's still airing on GETtv?

Yeah, I watch it from the box set. I think GetTV finally stopped showing it. But you should watch. And so should a few other people. You guys could track Joy, Victoria, and Elka. I’m just doing Melanie (so to speak :) )
By the way, did you notice up above in previous posts there were two episodes where they confirm Melanie DID sleep with the guy in the first episode.

Yes, I noticed. It was just implied in the pilot. Now we have confirmation!
Wawwie 01-23-2021, 06:36 AM Yeah, I watch it from the box set.
Where did you get the box set? I thought you could only get it season by season.

The complete series box set is pretty easy to find (at least on line. In stores might be harder).
Well, let’s see if Melanie is up to any sexual shenanigans this week...
Season 2 Episode 9- Elka’s Snowbird
Unfortunately, not today. Melanie and Joy just volunteer at the senior center.
Season 2 Episode 10- Law and Elka
Melanie just attends Elka's trial (Lawyer from below is back, but now his face is messed up from playing softball)
Season 2 Episode 3-Hot For The Lawyer
On a dateless cold spell, the three women are attracted to Elka's lawyer and decide to compete for him. At the end they start to realize he's nothing but looks.
Season 2 Episode 11- Where's Elka?
Searching for an on the lam Elka, the women find her in Amish country. Melanie ends up with a beard.

Wawwie 01-27-2021, 03:12 PM opus, reading your posts in this thread is really making me want to watch the show so I checked Walmart and I see that they sell the complete series for 42 dollars and change. That's a reasonable price, I think. So when I get paid again on Feb. 5th, I am going to order the series, then it should probably take a week to get here, so I'm thinking by mid February, I will have the series. We can then discuss at length! :)
Wawwie 01-27-2021, 03:16 PM Season 2 Episode 11- Where's Elka?

I remember in that episode, a bearded guy tells the girls that the beards repel women because it's a sign that they are married. Melanie responds with "it's working.":lol::lol: Victoria also talks to the Amish women about her mascara called 1000 lashes. The Amish chicks say something like "that's what we'd get for wearing make-up.":lol::lol:
I remember some stuff.

Since I just saw it a few hours ago I can say it's Joy that has the 'it's working" line.
Did you ever watch Cheers? Norm (George Wendt) is in this one as a Norm-like Amish guy.

I was telling you about how I found the complete series at Walmart for 42 bucks and change. Well, I found a better site for discount dvds where the complete series is only 36 dollars. I will order from that one on pay day. They also offer two day free delivery which is very good.

That's a good price. That's what it's selling for on Amazon right now ($36). Amazon may not always be cheapest but they're usually a good place to get an idea of what something is selling for.
Season 2 Episode 12- How I Met My Mother
No storyline for Melanie in this one. The son Joy gave up for adoption shows up and Victoria's prison pen pal shows up. Melanie is just there for that stuff.
Season 2 Episode 13- Unseparated At Birthdates
The second group blind date episode. Melanie’s guy looks like Jesus, which freaks her out.
Season 2 Episode 14- Battle Of The Bands
The women enter a battle of the bands contest at the restaurant. Melanie has a line that those cute Van Halen boys were hot for teacher but they hated Sammy Hagar. Which leads me to...
Some truth in that joke, things didn’t end particularly well, but
Sammy Hagar rekindled friendship with Eddie Van Halen before his death
https://www.nme.com/en_asia/news/music/sammy-hagar-rekindled-friendship-with-eddie-van-halen-before-his-death-2777445
Season 2 Episode 15- Love Thy Neighbor
Turns out Rick (see season 1 episode 5 summary) is fantastic at love making and gives orgasmic backrubs. Joy ends up sleeping with him but he's still more interested in Melanie and tries to get her. He doesn't.
Season 2 Episode 16- Dancing Queens
The women go to a gay bar looking for guys to be their new GBFF(gay best friend forever), like they had in LA. Nobody gets one.
Season 2 Episode 17- The Emmy Show
Melanie and Joy end up in a "The Bachelor"-like plan of a 10 yr. old kid who left a blind item on the "I Spied You Cleveland" website to hook his Dad up with a woman.
Season 2 Episode 18- Arch Enemies
Dead wife guy is back (see Season 1 Episode 3 summary) and Melanie agrees to a date because he imports Italian shoes. But turns out he has a creepy foot fetish, which drives her away again.
Season 2 Episode 19- Too Hot For TV
A bloopers, outtakes, behind the scenes episode.
Season 2 Episode 20- Indecent Proposals
In a Sex And The City parody, Melanie tries to have sex with no strings attached, but talks about it at dinner so much the guy leaves.
At the end it can be implied she hooked up with a fireman.
Season 2 Episode 21- Bridezelka
Everyone's planning Elka's wedding.
We hear Melanie lost her virginity to one of the ministers songs from back in his singing days.
Season 2 Episode 22-Elka's Wedding
Season Finale. A The Hangover parody. The events leading to Elka's wedding. Melanie, high on dog medication, makes out with a frat boy for three hours, and wins a wet T-shirt contest drenched in holy water.
Season 3 Episode 1- Elka’s Choice
Season premiere. No real storyline for Melanie in this one. She does say we’ve all done crazy things for great sex.
Season 3 Episode 2- Beards
Everyone's invited on gay cruise because Victoria is now a famous gay celebrity (don't ask). Melanie runs into her sister, who she wasn't that close with, and who she didn't know was gay. The sister of course assumes Melanie is also gay, and Melanie is afraid to tell her the truth. So Elka pretends to be Melanie's girlfriend. The sisters girlfriend eventually hits on Melanie. Meanwhile, everyone is lusting over the captain guy, who makes out with Joy and Victoria, but rejects Melanie. After our four are outed as being not gay, Melanie makes another move on the captain, who seems to accept this time.
Season 3 Episode 3- Funeral Crashers
The dry cleaner has mistakenly sent Melanie's "magic" dress to a woman who just died. Everyone goes to the funeral (at the woman's house) to get the dress and find the woman wearing it in the coffin. Melanie wants to swap outfits with the dead woman.
Not one of my favorites.
Christopher 02-17-2021, 08:28 AM I never liked the double standard that men who have lots are sex are looked upon favorably while women who have lots of sex are called negative names.
I don't like this double standard either. If it weren't for the men who play around so easily, women wouldn't be able to have that label. It's a two way street. I don't think Melanie is a slut. She has an active sex life and there's nothing wrong with that nor is it anyone's business to judge if this was a real life person. Sex isn't even a big deal. We've had a lot of decades where the meaning of sex has very little value in today's times. It's just a part of life.

Agree. And not even that active so far. I'd say at most with four guys in the first two seasons and early into the third. And one guy was a steady boyfriend.
Season 3 Episode 4- Happy Fat
Nothing in that area today. The women give an L.A. makeover to some of the neighborhood wives.
Season 3 Episode 5- How Did You Guys Meet, Anyway?
Flashback to how the three women met. It was on the roof of a hotel in L.A. Melanie was there spying on her boyfriend who she thought was cheating on her. (He was.)
(This boyfriend thing may contradict what we previously know about when she had gotten married, but I'm not going to backtrack and try to figure out the timeline)
Season 3 Episode 6- One Thing Or A Mother
Melanie is dating Andy and tonight’s their 12th date, so she decides tonight’s the night. After they do it, he wanders the house pantsless in a red T shirt, making everyone think he looks like Winnie The Pooh and giving everyone the giggles. He keeps doing more Winnie-like things. Eventually he finds out he’s being laughed at and breaks up with Melanie.
Season 3 Episode 7- Two Girls and a Rhino
Melanie starts dating a state senator. But turns out the guy is into sending dic pics, so she dumps him.
Wawwie 02-22-2021, 08:15 PM These episodes sound fun, don't remember all of them, tried to get the complete series from Walmart about a week ago, but they are still sold out. :(

Looks like the price is creeping up. The box set at Amazon is currently $42 and at Walmart.com it said $62 . It used to be mid thirties.
Oh, and Melanie’s storyline in today’s was inspired by Anthony Weiner. Remember him? She even says she got “weinered” :)
Season 3 Episode 8- God and Football
Melanie's in the Cleveland Browns locker room for a column and ends up dating the kicker. But he's really dumb, and when he gets injured and quits football the fame googles wear off and and she breaks up with him.
Season 3 Episode 9- Love Is Blind
Melanie's son is the surprise fiancée of Victoria's daughter and the moms are worried. But at the end the kids break up.
Season 3 Episode 10- Life With Lucci
Susan Lucci moves in, and tries to help everyone in her own way. For Melanie, it’s that Melanie is trying to get to bathing suit weight for a Bermuda trip, so Lucci gives her a tapeworm.
Season 3 Episode 11- I’m With The Band
At a recording session, Melanie makes out with who she thinks is David Gates from the band Bread. But turns out he’s a different David Gates, this one the president of the minivan association.
Bonus- Melanie wears a Van Halen shirt

It's Valentine's Day and everyone considers lost loves. Joy starts thinking about the guy who had left her at the altar years ago. But he's there with his pregnant wife and young sons. However, Melanie meets another guy there and they end up making out. At the end of the episode we see a photo of the guy who had abandoned Joy at the altar, and it's the same guy Melanie is making out with!

Continuing on....
Season 3 Episode 13- Tangled Web
Everyone goes to a lake house after a poisonous spider gets loose at the regular house (spider comes along though). Melanie has slept with her new guy, but when he shows up at the lake house she finds out he's Joy's former fiancé. To spare Joy Melanie has the religious guy who comes to the door pretend to be her new boyfriend instead (but he's ends up being obsessed with Victoria). At the end they realize altar leaving guy is somewhat pathetic, and Melanie ends it with him and Joy finally finds closure.
Extra fun - Melanie uses the words "slutty" and "sluttier"
Season 3 Episode 14- Rubber Ball
The woman want to join a country club, and attend a party at it (at $5000 a ticket) in hopes of finding sponsorship. Not much of a Melanie storyline to speak of in this one.
Season 3 Episode 15- Hot And Heavy
At a community center, Melanie wanders into a Sexaholics Anonymous meeting, where of course it's assumed she's a sexaholic. She meets a guy there, but he eventually reveals he's not one, he was just an undercover reporter there for a job and she reveals she's not one either (Melanie says: "I like sex, but I'm not addicted to it"). They head off on a date.
Inside joke moment--- When he thinks she's a sexaholic he tells her to take recovery 'one day at a time', and she gives him a quizzical look.
Season 3 Episode 16- Everything Goes Better With Vampires
Melanie’s dating a professor, but his smart pretentiousness annoys her. (Still together at the end of the ep though.)
Season 3 Episode 17- Claus, Tails & High-Pitched Males: Birthdates 3
Another group blind date episode. Melanie's date is the lead in a production of Jersey Boys. But he talks in real life with a high pitched voice, making him sound like Mickey Mouse. Alas, this causes the date to not go well.
Season 3 Episode 18 - Cruel Shoes
Victoria’s attempting to show off her new shoe line at a fashion show, and Melanie’s one of the models.
Season 3 Episode 19- Bye George, I Think He's Got It!
Melanie (and Victoria) attempt to give Artie a makeover
Season 3 Episode 20- The Gateway Friend
I'll just lazily cut and paste the synopsis for this one from Wikipedia....
The women have to get their L.A. friend, Courtney (Kristin Chenoweth) back together with her Beverly Hills dermatologist boyfriend, Dr. Minton (Jonathan Silverman) or face the prospect of never getting an appointment with him again.
Season 3 Episode 21- Some Like It Hot
Another behind the scenes/bloopers/clips episode
Season 3 Episode 22- Storage Wars
Melanie and Victoria find an old letter in a painting bought at a storage auction, written and sent by Abraham Lincoln, detailing an affair he was having. They debate whether to release it publicly.
Season 3 Episode 23- What's Behind the Door
Melanie is a writer on the Edge Of Tomorrow reboot, being done as an app
Season 3 Episode 24- Blow Outs
Season Finale. Melanie getting secret blow outs (hair styling) leads to a fight among the women and thoughts of moving out. After everyone makes up....
Cliffhanger- The door bell rings and there's a baby on the front porch!
To Be Continued...
Season 4 Episode 1- That Changes Everything
Season Premiere
(just to wrap up the cliffhanger, the baby is Joy's grandson, who she didn't know about and in fact her son just learned about, and the son had put him on the porch, rang the doorbell, and then went back to the car to get some stuff)
Anyways, off to Melanie's story. She gets a new job promoting Cleveland and is attracted to her boss, Alec, but her other boss, Chloe, is Alec's ex wife who threatens her to stay away from him.
Season 4 Episode 2- A Midwinter Night's Sex Comedy
Melanie’s still flirting with Alec, while Chloe makes her spy on Alec to find out about the “slut” he’s interested in. During a business date with Melanie, Alec’s date shows up. Prior to that though, due to various circumstances, Melanie ends up in a bed with Chloe.

Season 4 Episode 3- Method Man
As Alec is planning a trip with his girlfriend, Melanie lies to him that Victoria's new costar is her boyfriend. At the end Alec overhears the truth of how Melanie really feels.
Christopher 03-23-2021, 04:42 PM I'm rewatching Hot in Cleveland as well. I'm not as far ahead like you are. I'm still in season 3. I'm surprise people think Melanie is a slut. Joy has had the most men so far. The previous one I watched was where she lied to a 22 year old blind man to get in his pants. Now in the Lucci episode she's banging the prostitute Susan set her up with. Only she didn't know the man was a prostitute. Melanie hasn't been with as many men as Joy so far.

The whole thing really started with one poster here who kept saying it (mostly due to her activities in the pilot and a season 5 episode), so when I decided to track Melanie's life in my latest rewatch I hooked in that. My basic plan is to disprove the idea.
I thought a bit about eventually changing the thread title to something more generic, but I think as is it's attention getting and decent clickbait, so it'll stay.
(Agree with you about Joy in the early seasons)

This is my first rewatch since the series ended. Current TV sucks so I'm going back to the classics. From what they've shown so far, Victoria is obsessed with her career. She never cares if she has a man or not. Melanie is focused on finding herself again after her divorce. There's been many episodes where she is doing something from her book or taking care of things from her personal life. Joy is like the Blanche from Golden Girls. She is so man hungry every episode. I don't think the episode where she lies to a blind man to get in his pants would air in today's times. It's very wrong but at the time this episode aired, it was funny because Joy is the desperate one in the group. I remember things change for Joy in the later seasons. She becomes focused on her career as a private investigator. I had forgotten how trashy they make Joy in these early seasons. I'm all for a healthy sex life, but lying to someone who is handicap because you want to get in their pants is messed up. I'm glad they eventually turn Joy around onto other things.

As with many long running series (ok, maybe not Seinfeld :) ), characters often change, grow, and develop as it goes along.
Forging ahead....
Season 4 Episode 4- GILFS
A sitcom staple for Melanie in this one. Alec is on vacation with his girlfriend and Melanie is sending him more and more outlandish texts, and not receiving replies. When she finds out the reason is because he left his phone at home, they break into his apartment to delete the messages before he can read them.
Plot twist- Alec didn’t travel with his girlfriend, he went alone so he could “think”
Bonus— A “Schneider” sighting
262572
Season 4 Episode 5- A Box Full of Puppies
No new Melanie /Alec developments. Everyone is at the vets office because the dog swallowed keys. We hear that Melanie used to complain about her boring life and loveless marriage.
Schmo 03-25-2021, 01:43 PM Their message board seems to attract people who like or dislike characters a little too much. Remember that we’re talking about characters and not real people.

Schmo 03-25-2021, 06:45 PM I don’t like it when people can’t tell the difference between reality and fantasy.
Season 4 Episode 6- Cleveland Fantasy Con
So, after a few events occur, involving costumes, cats, ledges, and a My Little Pony loving fireman, Melanie and Alec finally have their first kiss.
Season 4 Episode 7- Magic Diet Candy
Built around the events of Wilbur’s christening (Joy’s grandson). Annoyed by Victoria’s non stop talking about her new boyfriend Sir Emmet Lawson, Melanie keeps giving her what she says is magic diet candy, but is actually regular candy, to keep her quiet. Victoria gains 5 pounds.
No mention of Alec.
Season 4 Episode 8- Extras
Melanie starts sleeping with Alec. But she panics and "fake porns" him. She then goes the other way and tries to be too calm. Eventually, thanks to some toe fungus, they find a place of normal real.
Season 4 Episode 9- The Conversation
No storyline to speak of for Melanie in this one.
Season 4 Episode 10- The Anger Games
Joy dates Alec’s competitive friend, leading to secrets being revealed, leading to Melanie and Alec’s first fight. But all ends happily.
Season 4 Episode 11- Fast and Furious
We’re all at a spa retreat. For Melanie, this leads to starvation and delusional fantasies as she decides to risk eventually being hurt by Alec (due to previous bad choices in men, see example below) or just move on and play the field. Alec wins.
Info- We learn Melanie’s ex had hit on both Victoria and Joy when they were still married (they had never told her)
Season 4 Episode 12- What Now, My Love?
After having sex with him on the golf course, Melanie finds that Alec is returning the toothbrush she left at his place. So as a test she re-leaves it along with a lipstick. He returns this too and buys her a toiletries bag for her car. More upset now that Alec doesn’t want her at his place she suggests a pause in the relationship. He then buys a bunch of “ladies stuff” for his bathroom, gives her a key, and asks her to move in. She accepts.
(Also, Victoria is going to Morocco for three months with Emmit, and Joy, who’s now a private detective, discovers what Elka has been up to this season. This is a mid season finale).
Season 4 Episode 12- What Now, My Love?
and Joy, who’s now a private detective, discovers what Elka has been up to this season. This is a mid season finale).
Season 4 Episode 13- It's Alive
Originally broadcast live. Solely deals with the fallout from the discovery that Elka had been importing drugs from Canada to sell cheaply to senior citizens
Season 4 Episode 14- Canoga Falls
Once again, not much of a Melanie storyline. We're all visiting Victoria's family.

Two and half more seasons and we’ll be able to make a definitive conclusion. Exciting, isn’t it?

Season 4 Episode 15- The Proposal
Everyone tries to help Emmit propose to Victoria. (For our purposes in here, Melanie and Alec now have an apartment and in a minor subplot she tries to raise his male ego)
Christopher 04-09-2021, 06:58 AM Opus, do you think this show would have lasted 6 seasons if Betty White wasn't a regular cast member? I'm noticing in my rewatch how Betty's character gets a lot of gimmicks. This latest episode I watched had Joan Rivers as her twin sister. Before that, she always has these shocking one liners about sex or booze. She was also a runway model for her outfits she wears every episode. I wonder how the show would have been if it was just Melanie, Joy, and Victoria. Sometimes I wish it was just them instead of having a running gag for what wild idea can they have Elka go through. I'm getting burned out on Elka's character because it's too goofy to take at times.

Full disclosure, I've always sucked at the "What if?' game (like you guys have done over at Facts of Life. What if those four first season girls had stayed? What if Jo had never been introduced?) Everyone can hypothesize, but there is no right or wrong answer. Hot may have been just as successful, it may have faded away in a season or two. There's really no way to know.
The story of Elka, as you might know, is that Betty was first intended only to be in the pilot, and then disappear. But ended up being a regular. And yes, she started out as a somewhat normal "sassy old woman", but got more and more outlandish, from being involved with the mob, to dealing prescription drugs, to (spoiler alert, in case you don't know, don't read.....) becoming mayor of Cleveland.
While the themes and emotions of Hot In Cleveland were always grounded in reality, on the surface it was always a bit cartoonish (heck, one episode is an actual cartoon) and larger than life. But I don't mean that as an insult.
Season 4 Episode 16- Pony Up
Melanie gets Victoria a position as a spokeswoman for kidney donations, leading to Victoria's donating a kidney to save a little girls life.
(The show sends Alec "out of town" a lot, allowing Melanie to conveniently spend lots of time at the main house)

I don't participate in those on the FOL board. I'm like the majority of the FOL fanbase that loves the show the way it was. The changes between season 1 and 2 made it better.

I wish it would have stayed like this. I would have preferred Betty a guest star on an occasional episode or two instead of making her a gag character to get people to watch. This is my first rewatch since the series ended and I'm really liking Melanie's stories. My favorite Melanie moment so far is the Hot & Heavy episode. I love how she uses Snow White as her sex addict story and says, "I think they were miners" but the group thought she meant "minors" I think Melanie got the short end from having more scenes like that because their focus was keeping Elka the outrageous one. With Victoria's schemes, it makes sense because she's a has been star trying to make it big again. With Elka, it's sad because she's an old lady that's being used to get laughs in.
While the themes and emotions of Hot In Cleveland were always grounded in reality, on the surface it was always a bit cartoonish (heck, one episode is an actual cartoon) and larger than life. But I don't mean that as an insult.
I've only seen the cartoon episode once so I can't wait for this to get in my rewatch. I don't remember how they became cartoon characters. I remember The Nanny's cartoon episode because it was their Christmas episode.
Elka is my favorite character !:) Oh besides Melanie of course!! :D
Victoria has always been my favorite. Melanie has become my second favorite during this rewatch. Elka has become my least favorite. I don't care for all those gimmicks to keep her entertaining. You can tell the writer's primary focus every episode was what can they have Elka do next to keep people watching for Betty White. I think the other girls were in Betty's shadow on this show.

So you’re back somewhere around mid season 3? It would have been cool if our rewatches were more synced up, but alas, life isn’t perfect like that.
Well, in here I’m only spoiling Melanie storylines (unless of course another of the 3 main characters is heavily involved), so let’s see what Ms. Moretti is up to this week
Season 4- Episode 17- No Glove, No Love
Alec brings up the subject of having kids, which leads to his and Melanie’s visions of what that would be like. Needless to say, they’re polar opposites. He really wants them, she doesn’t, leading to her breaking up with him for his own happiness.
Although they agree that’s awkward since they live and work together.
Sad face emoji :(
Season 4 Episode 18- The Fixer
Okay, let's see...
Melanie, still upset about the break up with Alec, gets drunk at a bar, passes out, and ends in bed with a guy, but he says nothing happened. The guy turns out to be a "fixer" who is going to help Victoria with Emmet's arrest.
Meanwhile, Melanie goes to see her new gynecologist, who turns out to be this guy
Season 2 Episode 4- Sisterhood of the Traveling Spanx
Melanie meets a doctor at Stormy's
and they set up a date.
But the fixer insists the only way he'll help is if Victoria gets Melanie to go out with him. Melanie agrees to do it the night before her doctor date, but the doctor shows up to return something. Finding out what's going on, he leaves.
But she makes another appointment to see him and they make up.
Phew......
Season 4 Episode 19- Look Who's Hot Now
Yet another clip show/blooper episode. This one doubles as a promotion for Kirstie Alley's then upcoming TV Land sitcom Kirstie
Bonniegirl 04-14-2021, 02:00 PM Why yes ! As a matter of fact she is! A big slut, a huge tramp, a Jezebel, a harlot ! In biblical times they would have thrown stones at her!!!:lol::D:wave:
Why yes ! As a matter of fact she is! A big slut, a huge tramp, a Jezebel, a harlot ! In biblical times they would have thrown stones at her!!!:lol::D:wave:
Too early for final judgement. About 50 more episodes of hijinks to go before I offer my final ruling.
But if someone doesn't know what my final decision will be they don't know me very well
And where's Wawwie? Wawwie inspired this thread, and it's title, and who I consider co-owner and is entitled to half the profits we make in here.
Which so far is $0, but hey, you never know.
Season 4 Episode 20- Cleveland Indians
Another with no Melanie storyline.
Season 4 Episode 21- Corpse Bride
Melanie goes to break up with Harry (who we’ve never seen or heard about before) and finds him dead. They find an engagement ring he had bought and she has it on when some of his family comes over and they think the two of them were engaged. This leads to Melanie hosting his wake and having to do a “grieving fiancé eulogy”. She doesn’t know how, but we then learn Joy was hiding the fact the father that had abandoned Joy’s family and she had barely known had recently died and she had written some things to try and get through her feelings. Melanie appropriates the speech for Harry’s eulogy.
Season 4 Episode 22- All My Exes
Visiting Victoria in the hospital, Melanie and Joy “compete” over a guy in a coma.
(I remember Friends doing a similar story)
Season 4 Episode 23- Love Is All Around
Another kind of/sort of group blind date episode (except Victoria's, who since she's in love and engaged, is of the business variety). Melanie's date is with a plastic surgeon, but things go awry when she asks what he might do to improve her, and he offers too many suggestions.
But the main thrust of the episode is the reunion of Elka's old bowling team, which is a reunion of the female actors from The Mary Tyler Moore Show.

Season 4 Episode 24- The Man That Got Away
Season finale. Most of the major events involve Victoria and Joy. For our purposes, Melanie finds out from a doctor a mole is non-cancerous and becomes a "life is beautiful" person. At the very end of the episode a different doctor calls and tells her she's pregnant.
To Be Continued.....
Trivia- Melanie says her middle name is Hope
Season 5 Episode 1- Stayin' Alive
Season premiere. Originally broadcast live.
All cliffhangers from the previous episode put on hold till next week. This is an ep about being everyone held hostage in a cabin.
Season 5 Episode 2- Surprise!
Melanie goes to tell Alec she’s pregnant and finds him living with his new girlfriend.
Jumping to the end:
Good news— Melanie’s not pregnant. It was a false positive.
Bad news- The false positive was caused by a brain tumor. Oh no :(
Season 5 Episode 3- Dr. Who?
Melanie searches for a doctor to treat the brain tumor
Season 5 Episode 4 - The Undead
Melanie's sleeping with Mike but they have a difference of opinion on how to spoon.
Season 5 Episode 5- Elka Takes A Lover
Due to a mix up, Melanie ends up on a date with her dentist.
Season 5 Episode 6- Rusty Banks Rides Again
Melanie meets up with the actor she had a crush on in high school, but he thinks she's crazy and files a restraining order. Eventually she ends up with acne and a back brace like she had in high school. They finally bond over the fact they were both awkward in high school and he agrees to go to her high school reunion with her.
Season 5 Episode 7- The One with George Clooney
The women want to adopt the “cutest” dog but a shelter volunteer takes advantage of the situation and separately seduces and sleeps with Melanie, Victoria, and Joy and scams money from them.
In the end they have him arrested and get the dog
263647
Season 5 Episode 8- Brokeback Elka
After being talked into using her brain tumor for perks, Melanie’s doctor says her CAT scan shows that after the radiation treatments she’s tumor-free.
But the singer she got free concert tickets from arrives, and his sincerity doesn’t allow the good news to be revealed. But (as usually happens in these cases), she’s eventually outed on a shock jock’s morning radio show.
Season 5 Episode 9- Bad George Clooney
New job. Melanie gets a talk radio show giving out advice.
In later episodes, she also sexes it up with some stranger in an elevator. Pretty gross in my opinion.
The elevator episode is way down the road. Patience. We'll get there.
And we are here...
Season 5 Episode 10- Bucket: We're Going to New York
Crossover with Kirstie Alley's character from her TV Land sitcom Kirstie. On a visit to see Victoria's old friend Madison Banks, Melanie, now with a clean bill of health, adopts the persona of Scarlett Deneuve and decides to stop doing the good in life and indulge in the bad, which among other things involves having sex with a stranger in an elevator (who, of course, turns out to be Maddie's ex boyfriend).

Season 5 Episode 23- Don Elka

Season 5 Episode 24- The Bachelors

Gets a To Be Continued for Joy's storyline
Final season! Does Melanie get a happily ever after? Let's find out.
Season 6 Episode 1- Comfort and Joy
Season premiere. Melanie goes to tell Bob that Joy has chosen not to marry him and ends up sleeping with him. They then proceed to squabble over who had pity sex with who.
Bob then goes back to pursuing Joy.
TVLegend 05-26-2021, 09:58 PM Melanie’s not exactly a slut, let’s just say she’s not afraid to flaunt her body. Joy’s the real slut. The number of men she’s gotten in her bed is unbelievable. Younger men, older men, short men, tall men, skinny men, fat men, total strangers.

I don't think Melanie flaunts her body in any way, she's just a regular woman with a regular interest in sex. But if anyone rewatches the series (or watches for the first time), yes, of the four, the word would most apply to Joy.
Continuing forward...
Season 6 Episode 2-Fear and Loathing in Los Angeles
We're all in LA (for Victoria's job). At the hottest restaurant in LA, a young guy flirts with Melanie and tries to get a kiss and a selfie. Turns out he's on a scavenger hunt from a bachelor party and needs a kiss from a HOG (Hot Older Girl). He doesn't get it (from Melanie. He gets it from Joy :))
TVLegend 05-27-2021, 08:30 PM He doesn't get it (from Melanie. He gets it from Joy :))
No surprise.
But seriously, this episode sounds pretty good.

TVL, have you seen this entire series? If so, I know you’re a Golden Girls expert, so would you agree
Melanie = Rose (the sweetest of the group)
Elka= Sophia (the older wisecracker)
Joy= Blanche (the slutty reputation)
And well, that leaves Victoria and Dorothy. I don’t really see a similarity there, but maybe you can point one out to me?
Wawwie 05-27-2021, 09:56 PM Melanie = Rose (the sweetest of the group)
Melanie is nowhere near as dumb as Rose.

No, I’ve seen the first three seasons in it’s entirety and a bit of season four. I might’ve seen a few episodes from Seasons 5 and 6, but that’s it. I agree with Melanie, Elka, and Joy. They do resemble Rose, Sophia, and Blanche. Melanie is more open minded about sex though and isn’t nearly as dumb as Rose and while Joy has a slutty reputation, she definitely has a Dorothy attitude. Victoria and Dorothy aren’t really all that alike, but I can describe Victoria as having a Blanche attitude, being selfish, vain, self centered, over the top, everything being about her but she is more driven by her career than she is sex.

I’m the other way. Yes, I’ve seen every GG episode, but it’s been quite a while.

Believe me, you’re not missing much. The last three seasons only get exposure.

Good point on Blanche being a Joy/Victoria combo. No of course the HIC 4 aren’t total GG clones, like for example Elka, unlike Sophia, never became a mother and had kids. But overall I see HIC as a spiritual successor to the Golden Girls.

Yeah, you can tell the show was inspired by The Golden Girls but it has it’s own style to it. I always wondered if Valerie would be able to pull off a sarcastic, snarky, domineering, laid back character like Dorothy.

I don’t think anyone could top Bea Arthur in that category :)

True, but I would’ve loved to see Valerie play a Dorothy like character.
Season 5 Episode 20- The Italian Job
Melanie's assigned a new co-host for her radio show, Frankie, a sexist but loveable type. After she messes up his relationship with his girlfriend on-air, he comes to stay at the house.

Inspired by a saying on a coffee cup, Melanie decides to install shelves in her closet on her own. Frankie comes over to make fun of it, and they end up locked in the closet. They begin to think they may have feelings for each other.

‘Night Sins’ might be closest? She’s a tough take charge cop in that one. I think that’s the nearest we get. (If you never heard of Night Sins, no worries)

Ironically, no. But of course, you’d be the expert on those kind of things.

I like how the show is very consistent and brings back people who appeared in the previous season or so.

To be fair, many long running shows do this.
Moving on to today's ep...
Season 6 Episode 4- Naked and Afraid
Melanie is afraid the new neighbor Jack, who she thinks is cute, saw her through the window naked and dancing coming out of the shower (ABBA's Dancing Queen was on and you must always dance to Dancing Queen :)). What he actually saw through the window was Joy having sex with his contractor, which grossed him out. This leads to some Three's Company-like misunderstanding conversations.
Eventually everything is cleared up and they have a coffee date and he gives her a kiss on the cheek.

Season 6 Episode 6- Out Of Our Minds

Season 6 Episode 8- The Young And The Restless

Season 6 Episode 9- Bad Boys
After six weeks of dating, Melanie breaks up with Jack for being too smothering and clingy. Frankie advises both of them, but then announces he’s leaving Cleveland to take a show in Dallas.

But.... at the end, a cameo by Mackenzie Phillips as the bully who intimidated Melanie back in high school

Season 6 Episode 11- About A Joy

Season 6 Episode 12- One Wedding and One Funeral
Pretty much the same as above.
Lots of important developments though. Bob and Joy profess their love for one another, and the mayor dies in Elka's bed, leading to her becoming mayor.
Ends with Melanie and Elka secretly bringing the mayors body to his place so he can be found dead there, and them hiding in the closet when a jealous girlfriend comes in and shoots him.
Gets a TO BE CONTINUED

Season 6 Episode 14- Family Affairs
From a DNA test, Melanie learns she has a cousin in Cleveland. He turns out to be a psychiatrist she gets a crush on. (Skipping over the "wacky" stuff in the middle of the ep), at the end of it further testing shows they share only one ancestor in the 17th century and are only very distant relatives. He asks her out.

Series Finale. Two connected episodes ran back to back on the same night.
On a plane to Paris, where everyone’s heading, Melanie arrives early and starts telling the guy in the seat next to her, Tom, about the events that just occurred in Vegas.
Ends with a 5 year flash forward (set to Queen’s ‘You’re My Best Friend’) where Melanie is still with Tom, although I can’t tell if marriage is involved.
Bit I like—— Joy’s fiancée Bob accidentally gets a Melanie tattoo.

Oh. After carefully considering the evidence, ruling is NOT a slut.

Wow, what a shocker
Wow, what a shocker
It was the most controversial decision since the OJ verdict
But for real, if the character happened to be a slut I’d proudly say she played it really well. But if you watch the whole series, the character is not one.
Bump.
My Melanie episode by episode guide if you want to follow along on Catchy Comedy.
