The first line of the first episode begins with Mrs. Garrett saying, "Agh, girl, girls..." Apropos, I think.

I also have vague memories of it, but all of these episodes I caught must have been during nights it didn't air against Fantasy Island. There's no way my mom would have missed "De plane! De plane!"

Back then, they never broadcasted comedies in the 10 PM time slot. It was always hour long shows like dramas, detective/cop shows.

In August 1979, FOL debuted in the 8 PM Friday time slot, against Fantasy Island on ABC and The Incredible Hulk on CBS. Fantasy Island didn't move to the 10 PM Saturday time slot until October. This has been well established in every TV reference work.

I was a huge Incredible Hulk fan, yet something made to switch to the Facts of Life debut. Perhaps the Incredible Hulk was a repeat. I always thought Fantasy Island was on the 10 PM time slot because of it's dark material.

I think it really should have been kept to that later hour. Many episodes were indeed quite dark.

That's funny, I don't remember it being dark at all. But I was so little, I just loved seeing little Tattoo and "De plane! De plane!" lol

After all, it was on an island, and it was called Fantasy Island---so shouldn't it be a light, lovely, inspiring show? (you'd think, lol)

I was so young that, like you, I don't remember much beyond Tattoo and the island owner guy who would grant the wishes.

I remember watching a single episode, as an adult, because I was curious as to what it was about. This woman got her fantasy: to be with the man of her dreams. But it turns out he wanted her to be his sex slave.

So, yeah... Darker than I had thought. I read an episode guide a while back, and while there were some episodes that were family-safe, there were some, like the above, that were quite dark. Cannibals, murders, etc.

Oh man! That would be so cool! And I can hear the theme song already...

There's a place you've got to go
For learning all you want to know
About the Fant'sy Isle
The Fant'sy Isle.

When Tattoo is what you're there about
But Molly's what you care about
The time is right
To go to Fant'sy Isle

When watching never seems
To be living up to your dreams
It's time you started going out
The Island's what it's all about

When you go to that remote estate,
You'll meet the girls, who number eight
The Fant'sy Isle
Where you can spend a while

The Fant'sy Iiiiiisle....
The Fant'sy Iiiiiiiiiiiiisle.....
The Fant'sy Iiiiiiiiiiiiiiisle........

I really wonder what the point of movies like that actually is? Why make a film based on a show where you change everything?

(I feel the same way about the 2003 film Cheaper By the Dozen, which jettisoned everything about the 1950s film and the book. WHY?!)

Well, that's maybe not so bad though. I mean, if she thinks he's really hot and is, like, totally into him.

I read an episode guide a while back, and while there were some episodes that were family-safe, there were some, like the above, that were quite dark. Cannibals, murders, etc.

Oh, yikes! Yeah, now, see, to me, that's dark!

(there are even "cannibals" in a children's Babar book!)

I agree with you: i normally hate remakes too, except for FANTASY ISLAND: the movie was fantastic, and i was fascinated all through it!!!! (it was a mixture of horror, eerie, adventure, drama and love......

Shhh, don't tell the producers "Fant'sy" rhymes with "Nancy", or the island will end up getting, like, four lines per episode, and then will end up being written out, a flower in its island hair.
