The Sunshine Home stuff was sort of interesting, because it addressed what middle-aged (or older) "empty-nester" housewives do with their time. It also reinforced that Edith was generous with her time. But while it was fulfilling for her, I think family has to come first.

I have to agree with TVFactFan in that Archie's behavior was realistic not just for his character, but for anyone in his circumstances.

Truth. Also, if Archie had shown just a little interest in Edith working at the Sunshine Home it would have helped their relationship a lot. Instead, all Archie wanted to think about was Archie 99 percent of the time.

There was also the possibility that Edith would cheat with another volunteer or worker at the home, around her age, although it would be out-of-character -- yet Archie is expected to trust her without doubt.

I can understand Edith being tired of being cooped up in the house all the time and needing an outside life. Archie was sexist ~yet he was meant to be that way ~ He wanted an outside life, BUT he wanted Edith's life to revolve only around HIM.

A woman is much more likely to view Archie as sexist than a man would.

Anyway, a single person is free to spend as much time on volunteer work that they want, which is great -- but a married person may not value the partnership much if they let it consume her/his life. Seems like a separation.

Separations & divorces were less common for the generation of Archie/Edith, so pursuing that type of storyline for them would've been unrealistic. But infidelity could be touched on, which is what the writers were exploring.

Gee, I've never seen any Scriptural translation that said:

Thou Shalt Not Commit Adultery- Unless One's Spouse Talks About Old Folks Instead of Oneself!

Archie was FAR from being religious -- he didn't even know how to pronounce the name of his own Rev. Felcher. (lol) Aside from baptizing Joey, he rarely showed inclinations in that regard.

In all honesty, Did archie need to hear every single thing that went on at the sunshine home everyday?
