Do you feel that she never became the star (https://www.quora.com/What-actor-never-fulfilled-their-obvious-early-potential-What-stopped-them-from-achieving-potential-superstardom/answer/Jon-Mixon-1) that early successes portended? She had some leading roles in made for television films (https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1993-02-21-tv-556-story.html), was the voice of Batgirl on Batman: The Animated Series, and aged into becoming a very attractive woman.

But she apparently, had issues with substance abuse (https://www.drugaddictiontreatment.com/addiction-in-the-news/melissa-gilbert-shares-her-story-to-help-other-addicts/), personal relationships (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melissa_Gilbert#Personal_life), and mental illness (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CvXK0tK_Uuc) which plagued her for decades.

Its awfully hard for a child actor to hit the big times later on. Few have managed it.

I think it's very difficult to for child actors to successfully transition into adult roles. Yes, some do, but many do not.
