Because she was eccentric with a capital C! Her out-of-touch taste in clothing and recipes made it pretty clear she was a little crackers. But June adored her so the guys put up with Aunt Martha’s nuttiness with good humor.

The most touching thing I remember is Ward meeting Beaver with a change of clothing from the RIDICULOUS getup Aunt Martha bought for poor Beaver. What a great dad.

She had just come back from town buying the suit for Beaver and still had her hat on. She probably started cooking supper, eggplant or some other oddity. I bet they were glad when June came home.

Oh, yes, hoagies! We had a store not far from us (in south Jersey) called J&M Cold Cuts. They had GREAT hoagies!! Even a hamburger on a hard roll was great. Their Italian bread loaves to have with spaghetti were wonderful, too. Really, the rest of the country could take lessons on this stuff.

Yes! Philly and South Jersey had excellent pizza/ cheesesteak / hoagie shops, excellent Italian food in general ! :) And did you know Breyers ice cream was originally a local Philly brand ice cream ? ;)

That may not be unique to Phila. area though. I remember a really good Italian restaurant downtown called Tarello's, which is probably long gone. Baseball games at Connie Mack stadium...

I was a real classy person and followed wrestling. I remember going to that beautiful place, the Philadelphia Arena, for WWWF (yes there were 3 W's at that time, World Wide Wrestling Federation) wrestling. Bruno Sammartino was the champion.

Also there were a lot of department stores back in the day. John Wanamaker, Lit Brothers, Gimbel Brothers, Strawbridge and Clothier. And they were probably all at the new mall (at the time), in South Jersey, Cherry Hill Mall.

In downstate NY, they were called Wedges. We of course knew of the terms "subs", and that there were places where they were called hoagies, but if anybody called them anything other than wedges, it was considered an affectation. A relatively small geographical area where this was so, but it included millions of people.

I like that Maskachusetts. I shop over the border in NH and even there we all wear masks. Very rare to see someone with a naked face.

I get no respect no respect at all. I walked out of the grocery store and took off my mask and somebody yelled ‘put it on!’
