View Full Version : What kind of name is Ian?
Hawkee 06-24-2020, 03:40 AM Since I have been a fan of Disney's Onward I always been curious about the name Ian? I noticed that Ian used to be a popular name for boys and now that Disney released Onward I have a great feeling that Ian will be a popular boy's name. Another thing I noticed is that I have seen Ian pronounced in different ways and I have always pronounced the name Ian like inn but I have seen it pronounced EE-yan or een. Is the name Ian British or short for another boy's name?

RetroGuy2000 06-24-2020, 04:54 AM Ian is Scottish.
Hawkee 06-25-2020, 03:58 AM So Ian is a Scottish name? I'm surprised to know because I have seen Irish men called Ian and it is a hugely popular name in Ireland. I wonder how popular the name Ian has become for baby boys due to the release of Disney's Onward like when Disney released Aladdin the name Jasmine became popular for baby girls. I love looking up meanings of names and read name books a lot

Bonniegirl 06-25-2020, 10:35 PM I like the name Ian ! :) I think Sean is the Irish version of John right ?
Even though Ian a Scottish name, I think English men are named this a lot too. I worked with a guy named Ian who was from England , and Ian Anderson ( Jethro Tull )! And I know some American guys named Ian too !;)
Also works as a last name

It's been a rough few months for me. First, I broke my foot last March then I have developed arthritis in my knee and is very painful I am getting a series of gel shots. I got the first one yesterday and it's feeling a little better today. Then my shoulder started bothering me and I got a cortizone shot for that. Hopefully no surgery is in my future. Because of this Covid thing I haven't seen my husband (who is in assisted living because of Dementia) since March 12. But I get regular updates and he's doing fine and really unaware of the time that has gone by. Because of all of this I haven't been online much because I just didn't feel good. But I'm better today

Sorry to hear that Marlene. I haven’t been on much myself lately either because of what happened to my mom back in May and had to take care of her, but she’s doing much better now though.
When ever I think of the name Ian I always think of two old coworkers, Ian and Bill. Bill was a very sweet older man who seemed to have a hard time with that name. He would always pronounce it as E On

Hawkee 07-15-2020, 04:30 AM I wonder if the name Ian is now on the 2020 list of popular names for baby boys due to the popularity of Disney's Onward? I do believe I have seen the name Ian pronounced as E-on but ever since Onward came out my mother started pronouncing Ian like inn and I told her that the character Ian is not named after a hotel so I pronounced Ian as E-yan and she thought it was so cute

Onward’s box office wasn’t exactly doing great as it got pulled before it had a full run due to COVID. It did get put on Disney+ shortly after and, as most streaming sites do, they haven’t revealed how many have viewed it. Though nothing official is out, I would bet that Hamilton has gotten more viewers.

Also, I looked into it and found that the Social Security Admin. announced that they have suspended the announcement of popular baby names, from birth certificates, “out of respect to those affected by COVID.” The U.S. will not be getting its official list for now.
DadTheKing 07-16-2020, 02:40 PM Hi, Bestie Here is the definition of the name:
Ian or Iain is a name of Scottish Gaelic origin, derived from the Hebrew given name יוֹחָנָן (Yohanan, Yôḥānān) and corresponding to the English name John. The spelling Ian is an Anglicization of the Scottish Gaelic forename Iain. It is a popular name in the English-speaking world and in Scotland, where it originated.
Every Ian I have known have been the strong silent type.
