View Full Version : When The Commercial DVDs Are Good they're very very good, BUT
Hazel Anyday 06-08-2020, 07:53 PM Mondays are My 3 Sons days for me and today I watched from the commercial DVD Season 3.20 "Dream Book". First Bub was in top form in this getting off the best lines against Mike's snide comments against him (Bub). And yes, this was a complete episode as I saw a scene I had not seen before, one showing Chip up in a tree and Rob telling him not to make any comments to make Steve feel old. Hadn't seen that in TV Land versions.
BUT, reason for writing this is at the end of the show Steve is shown playing his clarinet 2 different "songs" but the songs heard in this commercial DVD version are totally non-descript total NON-songs, almost sounds like practicing. Now I knew when I was watching this that I remember Steve actually playing real well known songs when I had seen this show before off of TV Land and Nick At Nite. The commercial DVDs wiped out the real songs Steve played and replaced the 2 songs with total non-descript clarinet tooting. Not music at all. What was funny that in the show the girls Steve is "playing" to are all thrilled with his "moving" music that takes them away to another place. The commercial DVD version took me to another place to, heck.:(
stevea 06-13-2020, 06:21 PM Hmmm. Another problem. I need to check what this sounded like on MeTV.
Hazel Anyday 06-13-2020, 09:44 PM I did watch my TV Land versions after I saw my commercial disc just to check and Steve did play 2 well known songs. Bub has a funny line to Mike after Mike puts down Bub's "hocus pocus dream book he bought from a lerechaun" Bub says "he also has a smart aleck grandson that's gonna get hit in the head with that hocus pocus book". This show was funny and everyone seemed hot, even Bub as everyone's head was shiny with sweat. Must have been hot in the studio that day.
Well, I couldn't remember the name of the first song from the TV Land version but the 2nd song he played was "I'll See You In My Dreams". The babes are enthralled, I wonder what they'd think now if they knew they're now shown on the commercial DVDs as listening to Steve practicing on his sax instead of playing "dreamy" songs.
By the way one of the 2 friends of Mike's is the son of famous band leader Les Brown.

Les Brown Jr. also guest starred on Gilligan's island ! He was one of the "Mosquitos " , the rock band that came to the Island ! ;) My all time favorite GI episode! :)
stevea 06-30-2020, 09:29 AM I just compared the TV Land version that was posted on Facebook to the version on my CBS DVD. They are exactly the same.
HA, didn't you post on some other thread that you ordered the S3 DVDs later than when they were issued? I'm thinking they might have had a music claim and remastered the audio.
Hazel Anyday 06-30-2020, 07:46 PM Stevea, are you telling me on your COMMERCIAL DVD that you heard Steve play real songs:confused:, "I'll See You In My Dreams" and that other real song, which I can't remember it's name.
I have no idea what Facebook has but there are real songs heard on my own TV Land version, of course, but on the commercial DVD that I have both songs are nothing but saxophone noises, not real music. Could there be 2 different versions of Season 3 that were commercially released?
stevea 06-30-2020, 08:45 PM I'm the first to admit I'm not real familiar with these songs. But I recently watched the version on Facebook which I think has a TV Land logo. The songs are definitely identifiable as "real" songs. Then I listened to the CBS (commercial) DVD version. It sounded exactly the same, same melodies. It definitely did not sound like non-songs, "noodling", or practicing.
CBS could have been forced to re-do the individual DVD due to a copyright claim, that's the only explanation I can think of.
stevea 06-30-2020, 08:57 PM If you scroll to the bottom of the linked article, under Music, the composition "I'll See You In My Dreams" loses copyright on 1/1/20 and goes public domain. BUT audio recordings of the song are copyrighted until 2025!
Egad I HATE this stuff. Who in their right mind would allow the retention of rights to a song for a century?

Hazel Anyday 06-30-2020, 09:00 PM So that you know, here's how "I'll See You In My Dreams" sounds as sung by dream girl Doris Day:

Is this one of the songs Steve plays on his sax in the COMMERCIAL DVD?
Hazel Anyday 06-30-2020, 09:01 PM Your last message came thru same time I posted, so I deleted my post and reposted it with the link included.

I think so, but with her vocal, it's hard for me to tell.
In both versions there appears to be a recording playing along with his sax, and they sound identical.
I was checking because I've made edits to S3 to add in the songs, and I thought I'd have to do it again.
By the way HA (off topic) this site claims to have all 156 episodes of Bachelor Father:
https://www.rewatchclassictv.com/collections/tv-series/products/bachelor-father-john-forsythe-sitcom-1957-1961
I know someone who placed and received an order on this site.
Hazel Anyday 06-30-2020, 09:38 PM Thanks for the tip, the guy seems to charge reasonable prices too. But I think the catch is there are 157 episodes of Bach. Father and he says he as "all" 156. My guess is he's missing the one episode I'm also missing:
ep. 5-10 28/Nov/61 Star Light, Star Not So Bright. Seems no one has this episode. Though I did just send the guy there a message asking if he has this particular episode. If he answers I'll let you know.
Earlier today, I listened to both versions playing simultaneously and separately, over and over again. I did detect a "slight" difference. However, they were both equally "dreary" and not "dreamy" in any sense of the word.
Now, IMHO the best "dreamy" sax solo ever would have to be in "Careless Whisper."
P.S. Hazel Anyday, the TV Land version of this episode out there on the internet is most likely a copy of yours :)
stevea 06-30-2020, 10:29 PM Wham! I agree on Careless Whisper.
Thanks for the analysis on Dream Book.
Also HA I didn't check the episode count on BF. You're probably right, he doesn't have that.
stevea 06-30-2020, 10:48 PM HA I finally have Star Light. Would you have anything to trade for it? It's a pretty valuable item. If I recall correctly all your M3S S12 is from Odyssey, or edited later Nick at Nite?
Hazel Anyday 06-30-2020, 11:04 PM How come you guys all know "Careless Whisper" which I've never heard of but you don't know I'll See You In My Dreams, which I thought was famous.
What? Stevea, you have Bach. Father ep. 5-10 "Star Light, Star Not So Bright" 28/Nov/61?? You're the first I've heard has it. I've heard from people who thought they had it but turned out they were mistaken.
As for My 3 Sons s.12, I haven't made an official check but I do know for sure that I have Nick At Nite's Fergus Saga (as they called it) episodes and I also have the final S.12 episode from Nick. Most, I know come from Odyssey (that I got from a trade, by the way).
If you really have that Bach. Father episode I'd definitely like to trade. The only other series I'd love to get at this point is Love That Bob.
Hazel Anyday 06-30-2020, 11:15 PM OK, I just checked out Careless Whisper on Utube and now I see what's happening. I think I'm too old to have heard this. A generation thing, I guess, as this song seems to be a George Michael song probably from the '80's and I lost all interest in pop music starting in the '80s. I know popular music from the '30's thru the '70's after that I only know country music from the '80's to the '90's. So chalk this up to old geezer disease.
How come you guys all know "Careless Whisper" which I've never heard of but you don't know I'll See You In My Dreams, which I thought was famous.
CJ, you're most likely right. I used to do a lot of trading and my My 3 Sons was something I had that most others didn't, so I used to trade that a lot. Then all those people had it and used it to trade for other shows. So those original recordings of mine sure got around.
Unfortunately, that is how the trade hobby goes and you can't control it.
Oh, and if you like "good sax" just google "Careless Whisper" by Wham!
I promise you won't be sorry.
stevea 06-30-2020, 11:18 PM Careless Whisper is a song by Wham! from back in the 80s or 90s. I had a long haunting sax opening.
If you pull up the Love the Bob site on here there is some guy offering it for trade. His user ID is upperco and he does some interesting reviews of Danny Thomas show, Dobie Gillis, etc.
Star Light is about Bentley and astrology, if I recall correctly.
Yes virtually all copies of the last half of 11 and all of 12 are from Odyssey. Do you have any last half of 11 from N@N?
I'd probably want a few more episodes than a 1 for 1 trade for this episode. It seems to be pretty rare.
Come on, Hazel Anyday. I am sure I am older than you. I kinda skipped from the 60's to the 80's and can't decide which decade of the two that I like better. I grew up in the 60's and my kids in the 80's. Sorta lean towards the 80's. There are some decent 70's songs, though, and even a few good disco ones. Country is too "twangy" for me, especially current country. I do like some older country ballads, though.
Hazel Anyday 06-30-2020, 11:32 PM I grew up in the '60's too was a teenager in the '70's so I'm very familiar with music from those era's from my own personal experience, I loved listening to the radio. Learned about music from the '30 thru '50's by getting interested in that in the late '70s, esp. big band and Bing Crosby. But the '80's is where you lost me, that's when I switched to country music, loved Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings, Ed Bruce, Barbara Mandrell, Emmylou Harris, well, I could go on. It was later in the late '90's when Pop music took over country and I once again abandoned what was my favorite genre. Still love my '80's country though. I love the twang, the twangier the better, when pop took over country the twang went away and so did I.
Stevea, I told you what I know for sure I have of S.12, now you ask about S.11, I'd have to look into my original tape records to answer that for you. I can't remember everything off the top of me head.
1960'sTVfan 07-01-2020, 10:43 AM On the subject of saxophone solos, check out this awesome one from the song "Madison Avenue" by BTO. A sax solo ends the song, it starts at the 4:50 mark and continues to the end of the song. The entire song is great, listen to all of it. :)

Hazel Anyday 07-01-2020, 07:10 PM Hello Stevea, I sent you an email about a possible trade. Hopefully you got it.

Robert 13 09-15-2020, 04:56 PM Does anyone know how complete the episodes are on the Columbia House vhs set?
I know they are not complete seasons but just wondering if any of the episodes are unedited on the vhs set that were ultimately released edited or with music replacement on dvd.
stevea 09-20-2020, 03:02 PM Most if not all episodes on CH are complete. Some include sponsor bumpers and CBS's color intro. A couple I remember with bumpers are "Robbie Loves Katie" and "Who is Sylvia?"
