View Full Version : "The Garretts" (a look at Robert and Edna)
'80sSitcoms 04-19-2020, 06:26 PM Mrs. Garrett makes several mentions of her ex-husband on DS, though she never refers to him by name.
In episode 1 when Arnold says if his goldfish Abraham looks dead he's really asleep, Mrs. Garrett says "My ex-husband had the same problem."
In episode 3 she jokes that she once tried to poison him! lol
More to come!
Lorimar Television 04-19-2020, 07:01 PM Mrs G poisoning someone???

'80sSitcoms 04-19-2020, 09:04 PM In episode 12, referring to Mr. Drummond's upcoming proposal to a woman, Mrs. Garrett encourages him to grab happiness if he finds it, and then she says "I wish I had done that myself years ago. After my marriage, I kind of turned myself off. Oh, I had some lovely opportunities...lovely...but, I let them pass by. And you can't turn back the clock."
Interesting...

Well she gets Atleast two more and passes them by too. She takes the third though.

Yet do we ever see Robert Garrett after he majorly ticks off Edna in "The Return of Mr. Garrett"? No. It's like he just... vanishes off the face of the earth. Much like Howard, Kelly, Kevin, Molly, Mr. Bradley, Miss Mahoney, Mr. Crocker, Mr. Parker, Boots, and so many others.
And isn't it interesting how all of these people ticked off Mrs. Garrett before they suddenly vanished? Mr. Crocker refused to give Nancy a scholarship. Molly made Mrs. Garrett chase her around the dorm common room. Kelly trashed Edna's store. Kevin sniffed the girls' underwear. Mr. Bradley never listened to Edna. Boots acted like a snob. Miss Mahoney had a ghastly haircut.
And yet, Edna always had plenty of meat in her shop... I'm thinking Natalie was closer to the truth than she knew!
icecream 04-20-2020, 01:08 AM Mrs. Garrett has studied taxidermy carefully and knows how to dispose of the decapitated dead bodies of all her enemies.
RetroGuy2000 04-20-2020, 01:34 AM Mrs. Garrett has studied taxidermy carefully and knows how to dispose of the decapitated dead bodies of all her enemies.
Mrs. Garrett has had so many professions (registered nurse, dietician, maid, peace corps worker, baker, junk shop owner, hostess, caterer, etc.) it would surprise me if she HADN'T taken up taxidermy at some point!
Impressions 04-20-2020, 01:41 AM It would’ve been hilarious if Nick at Nite did a promo parody of this, where Mrs. Garrett killed off these missing characters using clips from The Halloween Show :lol:

Well, I wouldn't say he "majorly ticked her off". She didn't scream or threaten him or tell him to "KISS OFF!" To me she's first aghast, and then very disappointed, and civilly ends any chance of a reconciliation. (then again, I think you were setting up the tone for humor for your theory---so, in that case, sorry!)
Molly made Mrs. Garrett chase her around the dorm common room.
You mean around the dorm! lol...Mols sure made her get some overdue exercise that day!
Mr. Bradley never listened to Edna.
Well, sometimes, like at the end of "Running" and "Molly's Holiday"---but many times, yeah, no.

Kevin was the "Man in the Attic".

Haha thanks for the reminder. Right, wasn’t he the son of the guy Mrs Garrett Was dating?

There kinda was. '80sSitcoms and I remember Nick at Nite doing a sinister Halloween-themed spoof one year where they talked about Mrs. Garrett keeping the Lost Girls locked in the basement (with Sue Ann's sound byte about "having to live the rest of [her] life in the basement"), and ending with a disturbing mention of there being "no Molly Ringwald" in later seasons. They used actual footage of Mrs. Garrett, but changed the music so what she said sounded sinister, and '80s remembers her wiggling her fingers. It was GREAT, and I wish I could find it online somewhere.
('80s may have more/slightly different details).
FOL-FAN-ITA 04-20-2020, 04:26 AM One thing I always found weird is that Mrs. Garrett's family members appeared in just one or two occasions. Her ex husband only one episode, her first son two episodes, her second son one episode, her daughter in law one episode. I can understand Robert, who was refused and didn't want to show up anymore, but her sons? Alex disappeared, Raymond was in two episodes of the same season and he's gone too. He should have appeared after the fire, after all he was the owner of the building.
I found funny that on DS first episode, Mrs. Garrett said to Drummond "I don't do windows and I don't do boys", and after a year we found out she has two sons

You make some great points, ITA! It's really a shame we didn't see Raymond more; as you say, he owned the building. He could have dropped by to make repairs, or just see his mom. But after Season Five, it was like the writers didn't care to give Mrs. G much screen time: she was mainly just floating in and out to dispense advice and quiche.
But imagine what it might have been like to have both her boys at Christmas-time! There's a 1984 interview where Charlotte says she'd like for Mrs. Garrett to even have a third son! Imagine what that would have been like!
I found funny that on DS first episode, Mrs. Garrett said to Drummond "I don't do windows and I don't do boys", and after a year we found out she has two sons
Maybe that's because she had boys!

Mrs. Garrett probably thought dealing with two boys was easier than dealing with 7 girls. That drove her crying into Mr. Bradley's arms and had her thinking about leaving Eastland.
'80sSitcoms 04-20-2020, 02:05 PM Haha thanks for the reminder. Right, wasn’t he the son of the guy Mrs Garrett Was dating?
Yup, he and his dad were the "Two Guys From Appleton" (title of the previous episode).

Yeah, her leaning down while squinting and wiggling her fingers was from "The New Girl Part 1" where Arnold runs out of the Eastland kitchen with the lobster he named Claude that Mrs. Garrett was gonna cook, and when Arnold says he's cute, she says something like, "Cute?! With those beady little eyes and those long wiggly claws??" and she leans over him squinting and "doing the wiggly claws".
Now, the "and no Molly Ringwald", yes, I can still hear him saying that in the voiceover...but, the way I remember it---which may be right or wrong---was that was from a different promo.
If only all these had been preserved so we know! (I have faith someone in the United States has it on VHS).
'80sSitcoms 04-20-2020, 02:09 PM I like Alex and Raymond, they were both good actors.
But imagine what it might have been like to have both her boys at Christmas-time! There's a 1984 interview where Charlotte says she'd like for Mrs. Garrett to even have a third son! Imagine what that would have been like!
Actually she says "children" instead of "another son" (something like, "I'm hoping they give me some more children" or "I'd love to have more children") because I remember thinking, "Oo, there could have maybe been a Garrett daughter, interesting".
Maybe that's because she had boys!
Ha! Good point!
But also, FOL-FAN-ITA, I took that quip to only mean for her work. She'll keep house for adults and girls, but no boys!

My memories have faded so much that I'm not 100% sure anymore, myself. I so wish I had taped it. But we had no idea, then, that YouTube wouldn't have it, or even that a YouTube would someday exist.
If only all these had been preserved so we know! (I have faith someone in the United States has it on VHS).
Someone has it. Even if it's locked in the vaults at Nick at Nite.

I actually think that’s where I subconsciously remember it. I’d love to see it again.

I was rather under the impression that MRS G preferred girls over boys: she seemed to have a great chemistry with them (although she did have a good chemistry with ARNOLD too) and was brilliant at dealing with the adolescent girls lol!:lol::lol:

Did MRS G really cried into MR BRADLEY's arms or is it a joke? (just asking cos she seemed quite confident on dealing with teenage girls):cool::cool:

John Lawlor witnessed Charlotte crying on the set. They sat on bales of hay and talked about it. She wasn't sure she could go on with the show. This according to the Reelz documentary.
'80sSitcoms 04-21-2020, 02:38 PM In episode 28 (season 2, episode 4), "Mrs. Garrett's Romance", Mrs. Garrett tells Leon the human: "I tried marriage once, and it was a disaster. We used to refer to our marriage as 'the Poseidon Adventure'."
Also, in the final scenes, she is wearing the same teal/blue dress she wore a month earlier in FOL's "Rough Housing"!

'80sSitcoms 04-21-2020, 04:23 PM In episode 31 (season 2, episode 7, "The Adoption: Part 1"), we have this exchange:
Mrs. Garrett: "All set gang? Do I look okay for court, Mr. Bishop?"
Drummond attorney Mr. Bishop: "Oh, you look just fine, Mrs. Garrett. My, that's a lovely dress."
Mrs. Garret: "Thank you. I only wear it for this dress for special occasions that represent great joy and happiness."
Eastlake student Kimberly: "When did you wear it last?"
Mrs. Garrett: "When I got divorced. :)"
'80sSitcoms 04-21-2020, 04:47 PM On another DS note that's not Garrett-related, in the Muhammad Ali episode, Arnold for some reason thinks meeting Mr. Ali would be better than having dinner with Big Bird and Miss Piggy. How delusional. He can have him; I'd rather have dinner with the Muppets! ;)
I think there was even a "Sesame Street" reference in that same episode (by name).
And also, in "The Adoption: Part 2", Mr. Drummond says of the con man posing as the boys' long lost cousin, "He's no more your cousin than---Kermit the Frog!"
Then later in the episode when the jig is up, Fake Cousin says "I ain't no more your cousin than---Miss Piggy." And Mr. Drummond says, "I was close."

That's odd: i always pictured CHARLOTTE RAE as a strong and confidante woman who could accomplish anything, and she seemed to have a great chemistry with the 7 girls!confused::confused::confused:
I would have loved to get a part about being a housemother for a bunch of teenage girls myself: it'd be a very exciting experience!:lol::lol:
PS: maybe CHARLOTTE changed her mind when they offered to reduce the cast down to 4 girls instead of 7?:D:D:D

'80sSitcoms 04-22-2020, 05:21 PM In episode 35 (season 2, episode 9) Mr. Drummond is on the phone in his penthouse with Mrs. Garrett back at Eastland, and he says, "Oh we're doing just fine, Mrs. Garrett. You stay at Kimberly's school just as long as they need you."
That "just as long as they need you" turns out to be over 3 years!
In episode 36 (season 2, episode 10) it's another "Hello, Larry" crossover, and Mr. Drummond tells Morgan she can have Mrs. Garrett's room while Mrs. Garrett's "away".
