View Full Version : The Girl's School
cfr1970 04-02-2020, 05:31 PM I just finished watching it and really liked it!! The beginning of Mrs. G with the girls! I never saw this one before but the ending?? Was there more? She didn't accept the job when it was finished!:confused:
Blair SMOKING??!! And in those short shorts!! OMG she was closer to JO than Blair?! I actually liked that hard edge about her. It's a shame they chiseled it down later on.
Tootie was freaking ADORABLE!! She was so young and cute here!
I can see I am NOT going to like Molly. She talks so damn fast and just keeps going. It seemed the other girls were a little annoyed with her too.
I liked Nancy and Sue Ann.
Hated Mr. Crocker and glad they dropped him for Mr. Bradley for the series.
Glad I finally saw this and it was worth the 5 bucks for the DS dvd. I can see why it's valentina's favorite. :)
Lorimar Television 04-02-2020, 05:37 PM Sue Ann is quite different in the series going from airhead to smart, Kansas living, southern values girl and Molly's fast talking is quickly dropped, except for her main plot episode strangely
'80sSitcoms 04-02-2020, 05:39 PM I just finished watching it and really liked it!!
Yay!
The beginning of Mrs. G with the girls!
Yup!
I never saw this one before but the ending?? Was there more? She didn't accept the job when it was finished!:confused:
Because she was still on DS until near the end of 1979! Funny, huh?
Blair SMOKING??!! And in those short shorts!! OMG she was closer to JO than Blair?!
Lol, yup, and strumming a guitar too, no less!
I actually liked that hard edge about her. It's a shame they chiseled it down later on.
Some fans are REALLY on board with that. I love the Blair that she became in the classic cafeteria years. But yes, this Blair is definitely enjoyable too!
Tootie was freaking ADORABLE!! She was so young and cute here!
Yup! lol
I can see I am NOT going to like Molly. She talks so damn fast and just keeps going.
Aww, that's too bad. But ya never know, you may change your mind! lol That was a part of her character to talk in run-ons, BUT, they only have her do that in a few episodes. But Mrs. Garrett's reaction to her was so good.
It seemed the other girls were a little annoyed with her too.
What?? I never got that!
I liked Nancy and Sue Ann.
Yup, very likable here. But don't get too attached to Airhead Sue Ann, because that's the last you'll see of her! (as an airhead, I mean, lol)
But what did you think of Jennifer and Laura??
Glad I finally saw this and it was worth the 5 bucks for the DS dvd. I can see why it's valentina's favorite. :)
And hey, now you've got a whole season more of vintage Mrs. Garrett! :woohoo:
'80sSitcoms 04-02-2020, 05:41 PM Sue Ann is quite different in the series going from airhead to smart, Kansas living, southern values girl and Molly's fast talking is quickly dropped, except for her main plot episode strangely
Dang it Lorsie, I wanted to be the first response!
haha :p
And I think they have Molly fast-talk at least one other time. I seem to remember there were 3 distinctive times. But that's why I didn't like the Reelz documentary calling her the fast-talking one, because her activism/feminism was featured much more than her fast-talking.
cfr1970 04-02-2020, 05:46 PM Who the hell are Jennifer and Laura?! The Lost LOST girls?!
I don't think I can put up with the whole season of DS. Gary Coleman just grates on my nerves. I'd have to FF to all the Mrs. G scenes just to get through it!
I didn't find Sue Ann much of an airhead. She just seemed bubbly to me. I liked her just the way she was. Nancy though so far is my favorite, but I have to see the whole season 1 to do that Lost Girl poll.
'80sSitcoms 04-02-2020, 05:48 PM Hated Mr. Crocker and glad they dropped him for Mr. Bradley for the series.
You "hate" Mr. Crocker??
Okay, see, I get that he's awful for Mrs. Garrett and the girls. We don't want them to have to deal with him. But he's funny as a deranged headmaster!
This pic is from what I think is his most hilarious moment in the episode, when he VERY over-the-top-ily (lol) coaches a distraught, distracted Nancy on what he wants from her acting, as if she's in any sort of position to concentrate on all of this specific direction:
"Concentrate on passionate youthful recklessness, followed by stubborn defiance, then top it off with a little bit of seething dismaaaaaaayyyy!"

Mr. Crocker was just too intense for my taste. I could see Mrs. Garrett couldn't stand him either and if Mrs. G doesn't like someone, then I don't either!:lol:
I just thought of something about Blair smoking. How funny would it have been if Mrs. G had shockingly asked Blair:
Mrs. Garrett: "Where did you get cigarette's?!"
Blair: "I got cigarettes!"
'80sSitcoms 04-02-2020, 06:33 PM Who the hell are Jennifer and Laura?! The Lost LOST girls?!
Yes! Jennifer was the only other girl with lines (think of the staircase scene---the only one there ever where girls are talking while sitting on the stairs!).
And Laura was the tomboy who had the frog Leon. She maybe had one line??
I don't think I can put up with the whole season of DS. Gary Coleman just grates on my nerves. I'd have to FF to all the Mrs. G scenes just to get through it!
Well, at least do that---and Mrs. Garrett gets an episode all to herself too! :)
I didn't find Sue Ann much of an airhead. She just seemed bubbly to me. I liked her just the way she was.
But pricked most of her fingers, and she didn't even know she was insulted!
Nancy though so far is my favorite, but I have to see the whole season 1 to do that Lost Girl poll.
Yep, wait 'til you do all of season 1 with an open mind and we'll look to see what your vote will be!
Now you can go and read the 9 pages of the "Girls' School" discussion!

Blair SMOKING??!! And in those short shorts!! OMG she was closer to JO than Blair?! I actually liked that hard edge about her. It's a shame they chiseled it down later on.
Yeah, Blair in those Daisy Dukes was the last remnant of the rebellious Texas girl that Blair started out as. But after this episode, we never see her in Daisy Dukes, smoking, and strumming a guitar. She had become the rich, sophisticated Manhattanite we've all come to know and love.
Tootie was freaking ADORABLE!! She was so young and cute here!
YES! She's one of the reasons I adore this earliest episode.
I can see I am NOT going to like Molly. She talks so damn fast and just keeps going. It seemed the other girls were a little annoyed with her too.

Yeah, there's no way Mr. Crocker could have continued in the headmaster role. He was cray-cray. Can you imagine HIM in every episode? By the end of the season, Mrs. Garrett would have been taken away in a straightjacket!
RetroGuy2000 04-02-2020, 06:41 PM Mr. Crocker was just too intense for my taste. I could see Mrs. Garrett couldn't stand him either and if Mrs. G doesn't like someone, then I don't either!:lol:

Jennifer and Laura were the "lost-est" of the Lost Girls: they never even made it past the pilot, and were "replaced" by Mindy Cohn as the wisecracking Natalie Green, and Julie Anne Haddock as tomboy Cindy Webster. Their roles weren't very memorable, and you really only notice them on repeat viewings. Jennifer has no personality and Laura's only attribute was "has a frog named Leon".

When Mrs. Garrett ended her long spiel with "and a frog named Leon!" and it leaped into her lap I died! The timing and the visual was just perfect!
Yeah, those 2 girls seemed like dead wood. In fact, they were "adequate" lol. (I think 80'sSitcoms will get that one quickly!) I wondered where Natalie was and I also knew there was another blond girl that seemed to be missing...that was Cindy. So I didn't see all the Lost Girls in this one.
cfr1970 04-02-2020, 06:52 PM Where's valentina?! Isn't this her favorite episode?! I finally see it after she built it all up for me and nothing! :(

Indeed. After this episode was taped, the producers and Charlotte went to Westlake to see how real girls' schools operate, doing some research. They met Mindy, who was a student there, and Charlotte said "we've got to have this girl on the show!" And so they did.
Julie Anne had auditioned for the pilot, but didn't get added at that point. During the summer hiatus, they brought her back in and decided they wanted her. The minute they signed her, she started work that very day, so she must have been the last girl added.

FINALLY!!!
Well, i'm very glad we agree on that one: BLAIR was definitely the best as the
'hard edge smoker' and obviously the rebellious of the whole lot!
I still think it's a shame they changed her image later on (although i was happy to see her acting reckless and rebellious in season 1). In my opinion she should have interacted more with MRS G as the 'spoiled rude one' being told of by the 'authoritative feisty red haired' hee hee! (that would have made a great episode for a two part lol!):p
NANCY was my next favourite of the girls on the pilot: she was caring and enthusiastic, and it's really a shame they dropped her act on FOL, having her hanging around a phone waiting for an 'invisible' boyfriend, instead of the talented actress she already was for the play 'The midsummer night'!:)
I found MOLLY quite funny and pleasant in the pilot episode (especially when she asked MRS G for a candy ha ha ha!) and i can see why they decided to have her on FOL (for at least the first season).
SUE ANN was hilarious and just as funny and bubbly as she is on FOL! (except maybe a little clumsy).
Little TOOTIE was just adorable and such a kid!:D
KIMBERLY's lines when she introduces BLAIR to MRS G are unforgettable: "Oh yes, i almost forgot, that's BLAIR!"
And BLAIR reaction even better: she totally ignores MRS G, and just because she's a housekeeper ! (What a little devil she was ha ha!)
MRS G herself was fantastic of course: her facial expression, and the way she glares at BLAIR disapprovingly when she catches her smoking is a classic wow! "If you keep smoking like that your obituary is gonna nail you!"
Oh, i almost forgot 'THE CROCK': i quite liked his character as the eccentric and nervous headmaster, but if MRS G approve of him, then there is nothing we can do! (the feisty red haired lady rules the world!)
on another note cfr1970: if you liked the episode 'The girls school', i wrote a story on the Fanfiction DS siteif you're interested and wanna read it? (i'v posted two chapters already);)

I think this is your favorite episode right? You have such love for this episode and I see why. It's a great introduction to everyone. Too bad Natalie wasn't yet "discovered" by Charlotte Rae yet.
Is the fanfiction about the girls school pilot or season 1 in general? I should watch season 1 first to get to know all the characters to make the fan fiction make sense to me.
I can see why they chiseled things down to 4 girls for season 2---there's just SO many girls in Girls School, it's hard to keep track of them!! Only Leon the frog stands out!
Am I the only one who didn't care for Mr. Crocker? I saw you guys mentioning him and was always thinking "Who the hell is that guy?! I never saw him on FOL." Now I finally know who he is!!
cfr1970 04-02-2020, 07:41 PM Yep!

I like that story about Charlotte picking out Natalie. As lousy as her acting was in the beginning, it's still a nice story how she was just plucked from that school to be a part of the show. And I admit, she did get much better starting from season 6.
80s Dude 04-02-2020, 08:10 PM Neither Jennifer or Laura (the actresses names were the same as their characters) didn't have much of an acting career before or after "The Girls School".

Natalie seemed Mindy's authentic self the first few seasons and I like that.

You're absolutely right cfr1970! 'The girls school' is my favourite episode of all time: you get to see the 'roots' and how everything started!
It's the 'beginning of the beginning', and it's also the first time i got to see the BLAIR character that fascinated me so much, and she became an instant hit to my eyes! Actually, that was also the reason that got me so intrigued about FOL (except for the later seasons as you know) which is why i love season 1 so much.:talk:
So when season 2 came along i was very much looking forwards to more of BLAIR's rebellious way, but to my biggest disappointment JO took over, and don't get me wrong: i still love the story lines between season 2 and 7, but gone was the ORIGINAL BLAIR character, as the 'smoker and rebellious' girl that i had grown so fond of....
I know they changed the writers and revamped the whole thing, but still!:(
As for my story in the 'Fanfiction site on DS': it reflects all the characters from DS and FOL season 1 you're right (so obviously JO is not on it) so maybe you should watch FOL 1 complete before reading it, but not necessarily. After all, i wrote my own 'version' of the girls school episode;););)

I still think Julie Ann auditioned for the Sue Ann role since she auditioned for a country bumpkin role. Since Julie Ann was a tomboy, Cindy made perfect sense for her.
Julie Ann just made this post two weeks ago on her Instagram page. Sounds like she still is not a girly girl and is going without makeup. https://www.instagram.com/p/B9zt7nZpHXY/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link

There was no real rebel in Season 1. Jo took that role in Season 2. And the guitar went from Blair to Molly, which made sense since Molly came from a musical family.

I have to get all these Lost Girls straight in my head first or the fan fiction will only confuse me more. So far I know who Molly and Nancy are but the others are iffy probably because they both have that same golden blond hair and blend together in my head.
Blair is also blond, but she's more of a dirty blond which sets her apart from the 2 "goldilocks: lol. And watching Blair today in Girl's School was shocking because it looked like she was the original bad girl of the show. If they kept her that way, they never would've needed Jo.
They could've maybe kept Nancy with Blair, Tootie & Natalie instead. And had Blair & Nancy be the friends who fought like she and Jo did.

It's definitely possible that Julie Anne auditioned for the role that eventually became Sue Ann; it's even possible that the name Sue Ann was invented afterwards, so maybe that's why Julie Anne just called it "the role of a country bumpkin".
Julie Ann just made this post two weeks ago on her Instagram page. Sounds like she still is not a girly girl and is going without makeup. https://www.instagram.com/p/B9zt7nZpHXY/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link
Good for Julie Anne! Too many women measure their worth by their looks, and if we had more Julie Annes in this world, we'd have far fewer women going to the extremes of getting fake boobs, fillers, and plastic surgery. I applaud her.
RetroGuy2000 04-02-2020, 09:24 PM Neither Jennifer or Laura (the actresses names were the same as their characters) didn't have much of an acting career before or after "The Girls School".
Jennifer had no acting career either before or after her DS episode. Laura became a production assistant, something Felice did, in later years, as well.

BLAIR was definitely the 'bad' girl on the pilot, and you can till see a bit of her rebellious character on season 1: she's the naughty girl who runs away with the boys, she is even mean to sweet CINDY on the first episode, and she goes against the rules!;););)
And yes, i guess JO wouldn't have been needed had they kept BLAIR that way, but to be honest it wouldn't have mattered to me, because the 'cross over' between DS and FOL already had all the ingredients they needed for a girls school as i mentioned before: a 'bad' girl and a 'no nonsense' housemother to keep things right!:cool::cool:
I love your idea of NANCY as foil for BLAIR too: it would have made a great story for a cat fight between the two teenagers over a boy named ROGER!!!!:argue::argue::argue:
valentina warner 04-02-2020, 09:38 PM There was no real rebel in Season 1. Jo took that role in Season 2. And the guitar went from Blair to Molly, which made sense since Molly came from a musical family.
Are we watching the same program? Of course BLAIR was the 'rebellious bad girl': on the pilot episode she gets caught smoking, is downright rude to MRS G and on season 1 she escapes with the boys and breaks all the rules! (if that's not real rebel then i don't know):confused::confused:

Here's the way to tell Sue Ann and Cindy apart:
Sung to the tune of "The Patty Duke Show Theme":
Meet Cindy, who's trained in every sport,
And rarely wears those shorty shorts
But Sue Ann's only running now
Because she's jealous, Blair says "Ow!"
What a crazy pair!
But they're roommates,
Nearly identical roommates all the way.
One pair of matching students,
Different as night and day.
Where Cindy adores a rugby match,
And wearing clothes that don't quite match,
Our Sue Ann loves her Daisy Dukes,
She binges food and then she pukes!
What a wild duet!
Still, they're roommates,
Nearly identical roommates, and you'll find,
They walk alike, they talk alike,
Abruptly leave the show alike!*
You can lose your mind,
When roommates are two of a kiiiiiiiiind!
*I stole this line from Roseanne's Patty Duke parody, because it's perfect

Nancy O. and Blair did sort have a cat fight (Nancy O. dumped ice down Blair's blouse) over Roger after Roger canceled his date with Nancy O. to sneak off with Blair to go see Baryshnikov in Gossip.
Lorimar Television 04-02-2020, 10:17 PM Here's the way to tell Sue Ann and Cindy apart:
Sung to the tune of "The Patty Duke Show Theme":
Meet Cindy, who's trained in every sport,
And rarely wears those shorty shorts
But Sue Ann's only running now
Because she's jealous, Blair says "Ow!"
What a crazy pair!
But they're roommates,
Nearly identical roommates all the way.
One pair of matching students,
Different as night and day.
Where Cindy adores a rugby match,
And wearing clothes that don't quite match,
Our Sue Ann loves her Daisy Dukes,
She binges food and then she pukes!
What a wild duet!
Still, they're roommates,
Nearly identical roommates, and you'll find,
They walk alike, they talk alike,
Abruptly leave the show alike!*
You can lose your mind,
When roommates are two of a kiiiiiiiiind!

Did you write that yourself? It's pretty damn good! So it was a popular observation that those two looked so much alike they could be twins. I wonder if that's a reason they were cut? It's hard for me to tell them apart, but maybe after repeat viewings of season 1 they'll separate in my mind with their own identities.
'80sSitcoms 04-02-2020, 11:10 PM I still think Julie Ann auditioned for the Sue Ann role since she auditioned for a country bumpkin role.
I disagree. The part of Sue Ann in TGS was not a "country bumpkin". She was extremely naive and bubbly; she wouldn't become country (minus "bumpkin") until the new series. Julie Anne said they did not write the country bumpkin character. And that's the only reason she wasn't in TGS.
It's definitely possible that Julie Anne auditioned for the role that eventually became Sue Ann; it's even possible that the name Sue Ann was invented afterwards, so maybe that's why Julie Anne just called it "the role of a country bumpkin".
Unless we're presented with "F.A.C.T."s proving otherwise, I'm going with what Julie Anne says for the reasons I mentioned above.
'80sSitcoms 04-02-2020, 11:13 PM So it was a popular observation that those two looked so much alike they could be twins. I wonder if that's a reason they were cut? We don't think it was "popular", but a podcast had the same problem. Personally I don't see why anyone can't not tell them apart. Cindy has braids. She is the only one with braids. She's the tomboy. Sue Ann is the "loose-haired" conservative mid-western farm girl. You'll see when you get to know them next time you go to season 1.
RetroGuy2000 04-03-2020, 12:19 AM Did you write that yourself? It's pretty damn good! So it was a popular observation that those two looked so much alike they could be twins. Yes, I wrote that little ditty ('80s Sitcoms and I both write a lot of FOL-inspired poetry, as you'll learn if you hang around here long enough to see Christmas-time here on Sitcoms Online, with its cups of warm mulled cider, eggnog, holiday cheer, and of course our FOL Christmas carols).
It wasn't that they actually look alike. I wrote that for Facts of Facts Podcast, who said they couldn't tell the difference between Cindy and Sue Ann. Yes, both girls are blonde and played by teenage actresses named Julie, but the characters are quite unique. Cindy's a jock; Sue Ann's a conservative girl from the Midwest. Partway through the first season, they become roommates and best friends, but they are "different as night and day".
And just like Roseanne's Becky Conner #1 (Lecy Goranson) and Becky Conner #2 (Sarah Chalke), the Julies do not really look alike, walk alike, or talk alike, although they did "abruptly leave the show alike".
RetroGuy2000 04-03-2020, 12:23 AM I disagree. The part of Sue Ann in TGS was not a "country bumpkin". She said they "went in a different direction", which doesn't sound like they didn't write the character, but that they chose a different actress (a different direction, casting-wise).

Hmm, okay, well if that's the direct quote, than I'll accept the possibility. I just demand F.A.C.T. in these things.

Wasn't it you who pointed out that Sue Ann seems to share a room with Blair in "Dieting" (1-07)? She sleeps in a room with the door on the right and windows at the back, which is emphatically not the room Cindy sleeps in, which has the door on the left. By the episode "Running" (1-11), Cindy and Sue Ann are sharing a room.
And of course they share a room in Season Two.
That's what I mean by "Partway through the first season, they become roommates and best friends"

Absolutely.
Back when The E! True Hollywood Story: FOL Girls first aired, I managed to record it, on the days when we still used VHS tapes. This was the first time we got a video explanation for what happened to the Lost Girls, albeit a partial one. I watched that episode so many times I'm sure I wore out the tape! I kind of feel the same way, now: so much new info at once!
'80sSitcoms 04-03-2020, 01:37 AM Wasn't it you who pointed out that Sue Ann seems to share a room with Blair in "Dieting" (1-07)?
ME?!?
(I know, I know, I can hear you: "Yes, you!")

Yeah but that room mock-up was used for most girls' rooms scenes, though notably there are windows at the LEFT as well in a couple of episodes. It's always been strange how the girls' rooms have always been mercurial and never fully nailed down! (except for Cindy's)
And are you forgetting that YOU are the one who's kept pointing out around here that Cindy and Sue Ann are roommates in RH??? I mean, it's never stated, but you take it to heart based on the visuals in the room. So it's a definite possibility. I on the other hand staunchly said NO, Sue Ann was NOT paired with Cindy, because I firmly believed it was Cindy's room and Cindy's alone---until YOU pointed out those "Sue Ann touches" (which could be) in Cindy's room, and then I accepted that as a possibility! lol
After all, they are sharing a room in "Running", and Sue Ann barges in on Blair's territory.
That's what I mean by "Partway through the first season, they become roommates and best friends"
^---This statement is not vintage Retro.
And while I do find it odd and jarring when Molly says, "You guys have been best friends ALL YEAR" while we were not consistently shown that, I do personally believe they were new besties in RH with the whole support/Iloveyou/hug scene in Act I. :loveya:

It just seemed to me that the straw hat didn't match Cindy's personality at all, and seemed to be representative of Sue Ann.

Yes, Sue Ann's strong support of Cindy in Rough Housing, (as well as the beginning of Running), in addition to Cindy's "I love you!" makes me feel as if there were signs of strong friendship all year. But I wish that had been used more throughout Season One, as you say. They could have, for example, put Cindy and Sue Ann at the same table in the Tiny Cafeteria in dieting: a small, subtle touch. But instead, Molly has to hog the table with the cinnamon buns!
And of course, by Seasons Two and Three, they're not only sharing a room, they're dining together, going to the same dances together, attending the same classes together, and (in a later season) attending the same reunion together. They even seem to both boycott Sue Ann's graduation ceremony together.
'80sSitcoms 04-03-2020, 02:16 AM You mean I actually convinced you about something?

I know you and I are both very passionate and very opinionated about things so close to us, but yes, you have convinced me of a few things over the years! lol...after all, Mrs. Garrett would want us to have an open mind in discussions. :)
It just seemed to me that the straw hat didn't match Cindy's personality at all, and seemed to be representative of Sue Ann.

Yes...I remember last time I said Molly's comment jars me, you disagreed. But we agree on the issue at heart: that if only they had consistently been shown as best friends "all year long", that would have been so nice!
And I thought about the Tiny Cafeteria thing earlier too! (Wait, they're besties, so why aren't they at the same table??) And really, as Sue Ann's best friend, it would have been nice to hear from Cindy supporting Sue Ann that she thinks Sue Ann's fine just the way she is, she's great! (but Sue Ann would think Cindy is coming from a tomboy perspective, and doesn't have the feminine sophistication that her frienemy Blair does)
They even seem to both boycott Sue Ann's graduation ceremony together.

Just a few more touches would have been nice. We see it in Running and Rough Housing, but Dieting, as you say, would have been a nice time to insert something... and maybe Dope.
And I thought about the Tiny Cafeteria thing earlier too! (Wait, they're besties, so why aren't they at the same table??)
Yeah, that would have been really nice in Dieting.

I could definitely see that. Why weren't you writing for the show in 1979, again?
FOL-FAN-ITA 04-03-2020, 02:32 PM Guys, we always talk about Jennifer, Laura and Mr. Crocker but none remebers Mr. Robinson, the faculty member appeared at the end of the episode. True, he was the influencer unknowingly manipulated by the girls!
Great, now I'll have to go add him to the "Guys in their lives" thread! (I did think of him, I just didn't think he merited inclusion because I hadn't stopped to fully think about him---so I'm afriad I "Nancied" him!)

Impressions 04-16-2020, 02:14 AM This in no way was a Nancy-centric episode. The A plot was all Mrs. G and the B plots were about the play and Nancy’s inability to afford school. There was quite a bit of focus on Nancy but she shared a lot of scenes with the other girls. Also, didn’t it seem a little convenient that Nancy was given the scholarship because she just happened to no longer afford school there? Nancy confessed she wasn’t an A student (well, implied) and I don’t recall ever hearing ANY criteria as to how they would evaluate how the scholarship would be obtained/won. Mr. Robinson just gave it to Nancy and I don’t even think he knew who she was!
I enjoyed this episode but I could already see problems. We first see the girls and it looks like they’re all training for the 1980 Olympics! Did this school not have a gym? Also, why were they rehearsing for the play in the common area? Once again, did the school not have a gym?! This is a pricy private school, you would THINK we would see a gym or auditorium. That house was HUGE. So it wasn’t realistic in that sense but probably because of budget, they had to limit to a few rooms.
There was a lot of girls talking over each other and they kind of got on my nerves. Especially Molly with her run-on sentences and stories that go absolutely nowhere. I did like seeing this side of Blair though and yes, Tootie was adorable. Some of the other girls were just meh (the no namers). Nancy was good in this, she had sympathetic qualities.
Mrs. Garrett walks in the door and now they ALL want her to sew their costumes? Really? Are they all THAT spoiled? And then Mrs. G. does them without batting an eye like she’s some kind of slave? That wasn’t believable!
It was an interesting episode but it seems like they were really shoving in so much that at one point I forgot this was Diff’rent Strokes. It wasn’t until Gary Coleman walked in with that horse head, that I remembered this was the parent show
The fact that they offer her a job without an interview was also weird. It was like she was auditioning to be the housemother and she didn’t even know she was. Then we find out that she won’t take the job? Um, wasn’t that the whole point of the episode to get her to setup to take over the role for the proposed spin-off? I’ll have to watch some more season 2 of DS, because I don’t remember her departure on that show and how it was explained and/or handled (or if it was).
Lorimar Television 04-16-2020, 02:18 AM Agreed. IQ and even Gossip were more Nancy centric
RetroGuy2000 04-16-2020, 02:40 AM I enjoyed this episode but I could already see problems. We first see the girls and it looks like they’re all training for the 1980 Olympics! We don't see a gym until partway through Season One, in "Running". We don't see an auditorium until, I think, Season Three's "Green-Eyed Monster". NBC was too cheap to really even do much remodeling on the main set, barely transforming it from the frat house on "Co-Ed Fever" to the dorm on FOL (they could have at least changed out the wallpaper), so I can't imagine they were going to spend a dime on additional sets.
Cleverly, they reused sets, and the same set that is the gym is also reused as a classroom AND as Mr. Bradley's office.
Speaking of reusing sets, the same Eastland classroom in "Front Page" is later reused as a Langley College classroom, in "EGOC".
There was a lot of girls talking over each other and they kind of got on my nerves. Especially Molly with her run-on sentences and stories that go absolutely nowhere. That's quite an interesting point of view and it's a shame i don't have the DS season 2 (i only got the first one that i got together with the FOL season 1 & 2 combo set) cos i would definitely love to find out, how MRS G decided to leave the DRUMMONDS in order to take the job as a housemother at 'Eastland'.:confused::confused:
'THE GIRLS SCHOOL' is my favourite episode on FOL (i know it's DS but to me it's really a FOL episode) and the first moment i watched the interaction between 'rebellious, naughty' BLAIR and MRS G i was fascinated and she became my favourite character! (in fact, to me BLAIR was the focus and not NANCY):happyface:happyface:happyface

I just watched “The Rivals,” Edna’s last episode and they didn’t even explain that she was leaving this episode. Wtf?
Did Mrs. Garrett explain at all in DS that she was leaving to go to Eastland?

I dont think they do, just that they're hiring a new housekeeper with Mrs. G having a new job

I have the first 2 DS seasons on DVD (so I have the entire Edna Garrett Collection™), and no, there is no definitive farewell or closure on DS. After she's gone, there is an episode where Mr. Drummond answers the phone and says something to the effect of "With our housekeeper Mrs. Garrett gone, things have gone kind of crazy around here"---not that quote, but something like that.

Neat! I think I'm going to do that as well. It'll feel like 1.5 additional FOL seasons, what with Mrs. Garrett and occasional visits from "the girls". Two if I spread the episodes out right!

I highly recommend it! Not only do you get lots of Mrs. Garrett around, you get TWO episodes focused on her, a pre-FOL mention or two of her sister Beverly Ann (!!), plus there's the nostalgia factor of just having watched the show when we were kids. :)
Oh, and a guest appearance by Ellen Travolta, "the lesser Travolta", lol, so that's kinda neat.
AND you'll get to hear the inconsistencies of Kimberly's school and her "living quarters"!

Well...

In some episodes Kimberly is clearly living at there at home in the penthouse. Yet in other episodes, she's "clearly" away, living at her school! It's odd that it just changes. And IIRC, it's not a natural progression of "she's at home" for a while and then "living at school" for a while---I think it goes back and forth!

That's a possibility, but I still got the feeling it wasn't "settled on". Next time I watch DS I'll pay attention to see if you can tell stories her location is referenced in are taking place on school days or on weekends.
Eventually she ended up at a public school, though it was never explained why.
Yeah, that is odd...

It seems like Nancy in the pilot became Sue Ann in the series. Helps with homework, nice to everyone, sticks it to Blair, etc.
RetroGuy2000 04-17-2020, 03:35 PM Was Nancy O. ever mentioned as the scholarship student in the Facts of Life? That status seemed to have shifted to Sue Ann in the first season.
Yes, it's in the scene where Nancy is weeping on the bed. She says her father lost his job and her parents won't be able to continue sending her to school. That's when Mrs. Garrett floats the possibility of a scholarship.

No, he asked specifically on the FOL series. ;) :)

Not on the actual FOL show itself, no; only in the DS backdoor pilot.
IF you go with the theory that Blair and Jo were held back a year, and Nancy and Sue Ann graduated on time at the end of season 3, then Nancy would have really lucked out since the scholarships were not being honored/afforded anymore at the beginning of season 4 (phew!).
But like I said, IF you go with that theory.
This show has so many theories!!
valentina warner 04-17-2020, 06:42 PM Now i really wanna get the DS season 2 if there is going to be lots of MRS G on it!(i only got DS season 1 with the last episode pilot 'The girl's school').
Are these the seasons where the 'Core of 4' make a guest appearance, and where MRS G is having her 'lover boy' LEON?
I really need to get to the bottoms of things, cos i cannot believe there was no mention ever on why MRS G left the DRUMMONDS in order to take the job at 'Eastland'????
PS: if this was a today's show things like that would have never been left out....
I still think some of the FOL and DS writers were careless and forgetful!!!

No, the core four never appears on DS; Jo never appears on there. But Blair, Natalie, Molly, Cindy, and Tootie do! :)

No, Molly, Cindy, Natalie, and Tootie appear during the timeline of near the end of Eastland's spring semester, so Mrs. Garrett has been at Eastland for a while by that point.
And I'm sorry, I spoke wrongly about Blair---she appears in season 3 of DS. But it's only for about 2 minutes or less in an opening scene.

No, I don’t recall Mrs. Garrett ever interacting with Tootie, Blair, Nancy, Natalie or Cindy when they appeared on DS other than “The Girl’s School.” I just rewatched these episodes on Hulu.
80s Dude 04-18-2020, 09:21 AM Mrs. Garrett was gone from the Drummond household when the Eastland Girls visit. When the first season girls visited, the Drummonds had no housekeeper at that time. The writers still weren't sure if they needed space to allow Mrs. Garrett return. Mrs. Garrett would not return to a Different Strokes episode until several years later for Mr. Drummond's wedding.
80s Dude 04-18-2020, 10:19 AM Some of us have speculated that Charlotte and the writers/producers have thought Dana could have been a bad influence around the other girls and thus kept her off the set of the FOL. Charlotte said in an interview that Dana was flighty and Kim said in her book that Dana was unprofessional and out of it at times.
I came across this photo from one of the posters who has this photo in his avatar (which is of him). It was said that Dana liked older men. I found this photo to be deeply disturbing and creepy. Dana was 14 or 15 at this time and this guy was a teacher.

FOL-FAN-ITA 04-19-2020, 04:42 AM Hi guys! Sorry for my long absence but this is a bad period..anyway..
Mrs. Garrett had a very small role on DS during the second season. She was on only 8 episodes for the first half of it. Unlike season 1, where she is a great part of every episode, in the second season she has few jokes and is on screen 30 seconds each episode, except Mrs. Garrett's Romance. Her last episode is "The Rivals", Dicember 1979. After that episode, Charlotte Rae was dismissed and moved on FOL full time. In some episodes, her absence was explained. In the Thanksgiving crossover episode with Hello, Larry, Mr. Drummond said that Mrs. Garrett is helping out at Kimberly's school. On Feudin and Fussin' and Hot Watch, Kimberly said that Mrs Garrett is away. On Father and Son Day, Mr. Drummond is talking on the phone with Mrs. Garrett and said something like "You can stay at Kimberly's school all the time you need". Her last mention in the season is in Hot Watch but Charlotte's name was on the opening credits until The Election, the episode where Adelaide became the new housekeeper. In this episode, Mr. Drummond said that the last housekeeper just left. We have to assume that Mrs. Garrett decided off screen to accept the job at Eastland.
About the episodes with the girls:
-in s2 (Slumber Party) we have Molly, Cindy, Natalie and Tootie
-in s3 (The Bank Job 1 and 2) we have Tootie. Also in season 3 (The Older Man) we have Blair and Natalie
-in s4 (First Day Blues and The Team) we have Tootie
-in s6 (The Wedding 2) we have Mrs. Garrett for a little scene with Pearl, the third maid.
In these episodes the girls never talked about Mrs. Garrett and Charlotte Rae never appeared (I wonder why). In Slumber Party we have a little reference to Overachieving (if I remember correctly, both episodes aired the same day)

Exactly, a pet is a member of the family. Her name was Crystal (her eyes looked like crystal). She was a Siberian Husky. She died for a tumor, in one month it attacked her brain and chest. Her medical checks were always good, she was in good health until her final day, when we found out about her conditions. The doctor told us that every pet, but dogs and cats in particular, suffers in silence. They hide their bad conditions because they don't want to bring pain to their owners. I really admire their sensitivity and unconditional love for people.

The name Crystal is so nice, and Huskies are such beautiful dogs. It's so sad that she had a tumor, but of course since her check-ups were good, you couldn't have known.
At least you know you gave Crystal a wonderful life, and you'll always have those happy memories of her. Hang in there during this terrible time! :(:(:(:( 🐺
