View Full Version : "Man in the Attic"
cfr1970 03-31-2020, 04:05 PM Ok episode---but no Mrs. G!! Boo! :crybaby:
I think Kevin is alright, but his acting is a little too wooden as well. (Maybe he went to the same acting school as Nick the coke head.)
Going through their dirty laundry was beyond creepy. Tootie was so right to be appalled by that! Lord only knows what he did with their dirty bras and panties before washing them. puke::barf:
And that kitchen is behind the damn stairs so there's absolutely NO way for there to be a window in front of where Tootie was standing when she said he was shaving in front of a window. The STAIRS are over there Tootie!!
Does Kevin just stay up in that attic forever now never to be seen again?! I read here someone saying he only appears in a few episodes...Does he just disappear up there?
And what about that mysterious room the girls busted the wall for in a later episode?! Or was that the attic too??

Kevin mysteriously disappears and the attic isn't mentioned for a while. Eventually, the girls go searching for something (maybe Tootie's roller skates?), and Blair falls through the attic wall, which they make into another room.
They never show Kevin's skeleton in the attic, but I think we all know it's there.

Maybe he was listening to disco on his radio, and it short circuited again and caused the fire that burned down Edna Edibles while the girls were away.

An excellent theory! And would explain, maybe, why no skeleton was ever found...

Yep! The girls returned to a charred radio still blaring Donna Summer next to a heap of ashes....and Blair's half burned cow sweater.

Well, "Nick the coke head" did play a mentally challenged guy in the cafeteria era.
And that kitchen is behind the damn stairs so there's absolutely NO way for there to be a window in front of where Tootie was standing when she said he was shaving in front of a window. The STAIRS are over there Tootie!!

YES! YES!! When we were having our misinformed debate over the architecture of the house, I thought of this but "kept mum" because I KNEW you would find this out in the near future! We've discussed that here before---"what window?? He's looking at the wall by the stairs! "

That was HIM?! Wow, I had no idea...his acting didn't seem as bad in that role, but here he was just terrible.

I'm glad we finally got that whole kitchen layout figured out! And just when we do, Tootie goes and messes it ALL up again! Come to think of it, that kitchen had NO windows at all!

How about Jo sells George her motorcycle when she gets married and he takes Beverly Ann out for a spin....right into a brick wall.
Sorry, but I just can't to that to little Andy and his sad puppy dog eyes...I can't help it. He's a cute little kid. :)

You're right: that episode was BORING!!!!
And i missed MRS G's presence too:( (but please don't cry!)
And yes: KEVIN had no personality at all (even GEORGE is more fun) and was way too weak for JO as a guy boohoo!:p
The funny bit was when TOOTIE came up with the mega 'rule list'!
So let's all push KEVIN to the basement with the rest of the old stuff!:D
Impressions 04-01-2020, 12:16 AM I didn’t like his character. He was just a dumb, desperate, sexist, straight guy who really had no redeeming qualities or reason for being there plot wise. He even said that he could not be friends with a member of the opposite sex without having feelings for them. Seems old school. He shaved out in the open in the kitchen, which was disgusting and then screwed up Blair’s sweater and was touching the girls undergarments like a creep. I was actually rooting for him to get kicked out by the end of the episode because he seemed to be totally unapologetic and very selfish about all he had done. The misunderstanding was awkward between him and Jo and the the fact that another woman (was she his girlfriend?) came into the attic out of nowhere feeding him a block of cheese was just weird. I didn’t like the outcome of the episode and wish he was kicked off.

I get they're characters, but wanting someone to die in a fire because they annoy you is sadistic. I don't like Molly, but I never wish a harmful end to her character. I think her just going away was suitable enough.
I like Man in The Attic. I like Beverly Ann and get her relation to the series in season 8, but I like seeing the main 4 in episodes on their own. They click so well with each other that it's refreshing seeing that brought out.

To be fair, they're only characters. I don't think any of us here would actually wish for real people to die in fires. That would be sadistic. But shows do things like that with their characters all the time and they die worse deaths than fires, so I can't agree that it's sadistic. They're not real people.

We see a glimpse of that in season 6 with Mrs. G gone in some episodes, and it does take on a different dynamic. Like they're all adults now dealing with things on their own. I agree they all click well with each other that they can easily do it...but I just can't help missing Mrs. G being there.

I get it but unfortunately some of us do know someone who has died in a fire and can't even begin to imagine or want to the horrors they go through during it.
You see a lot of it in season 7 too. Beverly Ann's story does fit with the premise of learning The Facts of Life, but I wish they had done a season with just the main 4 only having adventures together. That would have been neat to watch.

Understood. I didn't think of that and i'm sure that's right up there as one of the worst ways to go. I don't even allow candles in my house because of that fear.

Wasn't it that way during the Beverly Ann seasons? That the 4 girls were mainly having their own adventures together and Beverly was just there in the background? For some reason I don't remember her having nearly the same presence as Mrs. G had.
But those seasons are quickly coming up on Antenna so i'll be able to see them soon and find out.

In season 8 she interacts with the girls a lot. They help her bounce back after her divorce. Season 9 she’s in the background as a pointless, useless character that should have been a one season only character IMO.

I should stop ragging on the poor character since it's been a while since i've really watched those episodes so i'm going to try and hold off on the Beverly insults until I watch season 8.
TV Guy 04-01-2020, 11:40 AM I thought season 9 was awful. The writers of the last couple of seasons didn’t get that the whole appeal of the show was the chemistry between the four young women. During that last season, the show had more of a “wheel” format, where many episodes focused on a single character.
Ryan Cassidy/Kevin sucked. He was like a proto-George - they clearly wanted a younger male character on board, but he wasn’t it. The core four were enough to carry the show at this point. They didn’t need all of these ridiculous side characters.

I don't like that either and prefer when all 4 are front and center and involved in the same story. I just hope season 9 isn't as extreme as when Jo dated her teacher where one takes all the focus and the other three girls are relegated to background props. Please say that doesn't happen!

Same here: i can't help missing MRS G, and i still think the 4 of them had a great dynamic under her presence (she didn't need to leave in order for them to be close):heart::heart:

From Tootie's list I think.I remember her saying it, but I forgot what she was referring to. This was when she was giving Kevin the rules for him staying.

Season 8 is extremely funny. The main 4 are still front and center in the episodes. Their friendship really shines that year. In season 9, you hardly see that. It's not cohesive like the previous 7 years. I really do believe you'll enjoy season 8 and be surprise by the amount of hate it gets from people on here. The girls don't act any different like they do in season 9.

It started out great the first few episodes. I like the trip episodes the girls do. Them destroying Richard Moll's beach house was funny. Rumor Has It is the last episode that featured an actual serious issue without a happy ending. After that, it just went downhill to where the girls didn't act like themselves anymore.

Season 9 isn't based on one particular character. Jo's relationship with Rick doesn't even take up the whole season. It only takes up 4 episodes. I think Tootie's story takes up the most episodes in season 9. I don't mind that though because it's about her relationship with Jeff. Season 9 is all over the place instead of centered on the friendship of the main 4 that made the show a hit.

You got me really intrigued now: maybe i should watch the whole season 8? (i vaguely remember watching season 7, 8 and 9 on YouTube a while ago, but only remember flashbacks, and that it was very different from the early seasons).
What i do remember well thought: was MRS G says farewell to her girls and how bittersweet it was.....
Oh, and of course BEVERLY ANN's abrupt arrival!:wave::wave:

Season 8 is just like the earlier seasons IMO. The girls have their strong friendship. They're not selfish or rude like in season 9. Beverly Ann actually relates to the premise of the series in learning the facts of life with her divorce which is weird because usually the newer characters don't have a purpose to the shows theme. It gets a bad rep just because Mrs. Garrett leaves and I think it automatically alters fans reception to the quality they did produce this year. I recommend seeing the episodes on DVD instead of syndication.

Christopher 04-01-2020, 11:58 PM What do you mean by 'syndication'?:confused::confused:
TV channels where they cut a lot of minutes off the episodes for more commercials. Season 8 episodes range about 24 minutes and 48 seconds. When I recorded the show off USA and N@N, the episodes were about 20 minutes. I don't know how long episodes are now in syndication. Things change so much so I'll be surprise if syndication for this show still allows the episodes to be that long. On the DVD releases they're uncut and you see scenes that help the episodes flow better.

Almost 5 MINUTES butchered! That's nearly 20% of each episode snipped off the show!
nvtlover 04-02-2020, 04:37 PM I agree Kevin is creepy and a horrible character. He's like Kelly. I am neutral about George he was not a great actor yet but at least he's a man hanging with them. I like Beverly Ann in Season 8 and like Andy too. However, Season 9 is not that great. Beverly Ann and Andy are useless then. Pippa is annoying. I like the idea the 4 girls should just be on their own for at least a season. Also emphasis their friendship and transition them better into adult life.
TV Guy 04-02-2020, 04:48 PM It seemed so contrived by the end. Why are those four young women living in the back of some store, in the middle of nowhere, with their old housemother’s sister and two random street urchins? It was bizarre. The show would have been fine with just the core four at that point. Relocate them to a NYC apartment (Blair and Jo can start their careers there, Tootie can attend school, and Nat can write), and focus on their adventures as they transition into adulthood.

That was called "Friends" :lol::lol::lol:
But I 100% agree with you that they should've done exactly that. Have them all move to the city. Blair & Jo in one apt and Nat & Tootie in their own apt. That would've been great to see.

The core of 4 alone and without any adult supervision (now that MRS G was gone) would have made a great sitcom, and instead of the 'USELESS' characters that came along (i don't wanna mention any names not to offend anyone) they could have brought back THE LOST GIRLS, and a new FOL would have started as: FRIENDS indeed!!!!:clap::clap:

YES.

That's so easy to figure out.
Blair & Jo get the nice purple apt and Natalie & Tootie get the guy's dumpy apt.
I always wondered why the apts were so different when they were right across the hall from each other. You'd think they would've had the exact same layout from each other.

Especially in a building as tall as that. But I suppose, as I've seen elsewhere, they could have had several styles of apartments, with different price ranges for the "nice" apartments, vs. the "holes" (as Monica once called the guys' apartment, once she had to move in there). Chandler and Joey's windows faced the next building, judging by the "morning is here" singing guy's episode, and they had no nice balcony, unlike the girls.
Yeah, I can't see Blair moving into "the hole", and I bet if she moved anywhere in NYC, it would be a nice place like Monica/Rachel's apartment.

The girl's apt is definitely Blair's style while Jo would definitely love the guy's apt more. But I can't see Blair or Jo separating and rooming with Nat or Tootie, so Blair would win and force Jo to take the purple apt. with her.
And I do the "morning is here" some mornings when I open the curtains and blinds and sing it to my bird when I wake him up. I don't do it loud enough for the neighbors to hear though! I know i'm not the only one who sings it...am I?
